Is it at all possible that you are trying to create dormies at the same time the game is generating professors?

It's the batman box in the Misc. -> Misc. category. Place somewhere on the lot, have the afflicted Sim click on the box and choose "Fix... Tans and Burns".

You could make your own using Deleted 2 I suppose.

To run the game in windowed mode:

Right-click on the shortcut to the game and select "Properties". Add "-w" without the quotes to the end of the Target line so that it reads "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 FreeTime\TSBin\Sims2EP7.exe" -w, or wherever your game folder is located. Make sure there is a space between the "...exe" and the -w.

In FT children change into athletic wear when they do Tai Chi and use the punching bag career reward. There are probably other times as well but those are the only two occasions when I've noticed it happening.

TwoJeff's Ghost Hack gives you the option of having individual ghosts scare only Knowledge Sims or no one at all.

You don't have to delete the directory, just drag it to your desktop and the game will generate a new one. If the problem goes away you can start moving things back and you should be able to isolate the rogue file if your issue returns.

I've had ghosts wake up sleeping toddlers by playing the xylophone or if they're awake, they'll get a thought bubble of the ghost who passes by but I've never seen a toddler scared by a ghost before.

Yes, the Charlatan appearing is normal. The game will create NPCs as they are needed but if it matters to you what they look like, you can spawn them yourself ahead of time with the NPC gun. The templates only affect newly created neighborhoods so if you swap out an empty template with a clean one, your already existing neighborhoods will not change.

My fortune Sims often roll the want to quit their jobs after they fulfill the want to sell a great novel or sell a masterpiece. I've seen the "Stay Home From Work" want a couple of times with my Knowledge Sims if they lose a skill point or something equally traumatizing. I'm sure the wants come up at other times as well but those are the times that I can remember seeing them.

Attraction markers are what makes Sims fart hearts towards each other. They can be passed along just like gossip and possibly become corrupted.

You could try running the game with the testing cheats enabled and see if an error pops up. Then you could reset or delete any offending objects that may be preventing it from loading.

The Lot Sync Timer keeps the time early enough that the paperboy/girl is not generated before you have a chance to create one yourself. This is the first NPC I usually create in a new neighborhood because I often start thinking about other things and forget to set the clock back. The options for skintone, age, and gender are on the Townie & NPC Maker itself - perhaps this post may help answer some of your questions.

ETA: Sara's post deals specifically with spawning a Grand Vampyre but the steps are basically the same for creating all NPCs. I don't think it's mentioned in that post but if you spawn a Sim you do not want, DO NOT SELECT KILL. This creates an unlinked, crap character file that does nothing but take up space. Instead, exit the lot without saving and re-enter to try again.
