With locking doors, you obviously only lock the bedrooms. This still presents the player with the difficulty of losing ACR functionality. You could make a common room for that as well, but now we're really not talking about apartments anymore.

Use "Myne" Doors. Get lesswhiny. Problem solved.

the Myne doors prevent the skillinator from seeing the skilling objects, I presume?

I don't use the skillinator. I know, I'm behind the times, but it doesn't bother me. As for only using the doors on the bedrooms....nah. I used them on the front door to the whole "apartment". You're right though, dizzy, it could cause problems with the ACR if a harem room isn't included or if the door isn't unlocked. I wasn't playing with ACR the last time I had a building going.

I run dorms the same way....itty bitty 1x2 rooms for the dormies so that I can have plenty to amuse me with a couple public baths, but large suites for my playables. My new dorm I've just set up has a huge harem suite on the first floor, since I figure the kids of my current going-at-it-like-bunnies couple will need to do the same. Plus I'm using that required degree hack so I actually, like, use Uni.

Is there any particular reason that the APO doesn't have the option to block elders specifically? Adults will block elders as well, but I was kind of surprised that elders are grouped in w/ adults.

Mostly because at the time APO was made, we only had 16 bits available, so we ran out when we got to elders, and so they got lumped together as they're normally considered legally indistinguishable.

does that indicate it's changed?
