Just as Whore clothes were disqualified in the last contest if they were labeled as such, shouldn't ugly furniture be disqualified if it was made that way on purpose to fit a bizarre theme? I think the clown chairs and anything made as a joke shouldn't qualify, nor should anything copied from a TV show, movie, or non-Sims game. After all, it's even more horrible if it's supposed to be useful in the average sim house!

I've been playing around with the setLotLightingFile cheat (thanks, Kochanski!!) and have discovered a few things. I hate like hell that my houses in the neighborhood all are sunny in front, but when you go to the lot the front of the house is always in shade. Ten lines of change in the Lights.txt file (swapping around minus signs various ways on "light sun" and "light sky") fixed it just fine. Now I can have light coming from any direction I chose, at least when I'm on the lot. Shadows and amount of light coming in windows is correct. So now I have four custom lighting files. I'd like that too. What exactly did you change, and is it a file you can upload and share? Please?

I have two computers with Sims 2 installed; one has all the expansions up to Pets, and the other doesn't have Pets or Nightlife. I got the texture error on the lesser computer. (I also noticed that the car usage package allows driving, car woohoo, etc., but not selling cars on those huge circular displays that came with OFB.) I'll be trying out Numenor's fix.

Did you make this a default skin using the tool in one of the earlier versions of SimPE? I know they discontinued that tool because it had issues. Defaults made the long and tedious way shouldn't be a problem, although I suppose any file can become corrupted.

TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Poll: How do you feel about accidental deaths in the Sims 2?

I recently had a pregnant sim die from 3-bolt syndrome; I think the only previous time I had an accidental death was shortly after I got the base game, years ago. I was playing in a hand-off style, watching to see how well they would handle their own needs (answer: not very well). I watched her relax on the bed next to her sleeping husband, pillow fight with him, pick a book to read at the kitchen table while he ate, and attempt to get into the bathroom to clean the tub while he used the toilet (only to be kicked out by BUY over and over again), all while her hunger bar got further and further into the red. Finally she keeled over dead right in front of the refrigerator. I had the husband plead with the Reaper and she survived, but I seriously considered leaving her dead. Stupid sim.

I get that in my community lots sometimes if I have a bar on the lot. If I build the lot from scratch or tweak a Maxis community lot and save it to the bin, it will often come with a bartender even though it has never been played before. Just leave the lot and load it again from the neighborhood, and the NPC should be gone. You'll have to do that anyhow if you want to sell the bar, unless you use moveObjects on -- the bar is "in use" if a bartender is present.

Who cares if someone else is doing it? Who cares if twenty people are doing it? It isn't copying someone else's custom work, or even using the same source for photoskinning -- it's just extracting Maxis-made stuff and handing them out. What kind of freak gets hurt feelings over that? Gah. I'm feeling cranky, I'd better go play something more violent than Sims for a while... but still, what is UP with people in this community?

In real life, the shelters "put down" the less-wanted pets. I've visited my local pound several times (looking for a lost cat, who did eventually return home) and the vast majority of the animals available were under 4 months old. The only older animals were lost pets with collars but no tags waiting out their 3-day reprieve in case their owners came looking for them... all other older animals get killed upon arrival.

I'm pretty sure Dorms do not count as public. I recently played a sim that I bought a double bed in the dorm and he woohoo'd a couple of times, but no one reacted as if it were public. And no public woohoo memory.
That doesn't mean anything. Woohoo in beds and hot tubs is never public, even if it's on the front lawn of a family restaurant on a community lot.

Before MTS2 and TSR stopped their rating systems, I used to give a full 5 stars to anything that gained a place in one of my houses or on one of my sims, just so long as I liked it as-is. Downloads I used for texture ripping I would give 4 or 4.5 stars, provided I got some lasting value from it, and I gave the same ratings to things that looked okay but didn't work out after all. Crappy stuff got crappy ratings, of course. It seemed fair to me. I don't go to the Exchange except to read the occasional Legacy story, so I don't know about their system at all. (I wouldn't know about "benes" unless I'd read the threads here making fun of them. Part of the ratings system, I assume?)

It's really weird to see such extreme protectiveness of sim-pets here. Yesterday I was going through archives on the TSR forums for a guide to pet jobs I saw there months ago and came across a thread bitching about how pets can't be eaten by the cowplant or killed in fires. Definitely a "where am I?" kind of moment.

I don't allow customers to use a bathroom unless I'm charging them by the hour. In a retail business, I want them to pay and then get out of my store so someone else with money will come in. On my cheapest business lots, I don't even have any facilities for my business owners -- they can run the business until their plumbobs are yellow, and then it's time to close shop and head for home. Bathrooms and break rooms are for successful business owners only.

Did your sim-surgery family meet any townies or other non-playable sims? That could also corrupt the neighborhood. Further, there are apparently weird issues with making sims and deleting them. From what I've heard, each created sim gets a unique ID number which holds their aspiration and wants, among other things. If you delete them (as opposed to killing them and leaving gravestones behind), the ID number can get used again for other sims, which isn't normally supposed to happen. If that occurs, you might wind up with toddlers in your game with wants like "buy a bar" and adult lifetime aspirations -- something that happened in one of my games before I learned that the cowplant is the best way to get rid of unwanted sims.
