Title: Donwload not included, so not for Pudding Factory: New Hair CC by Peggy
Post by: GeorgiaPeanuts on 2009 June 25, 18:08:15
Hmm well it is peggysims who I hate for charging for things that are not legally supposed to be charged for, but she made a new hair that replaces the woman's mohawk.

Hm, if it could be used without replacing the mohawk (which I like), then I might try it out.

Well I could say its a step forward but not so much when it replaces a existing hair.

I downloaded it.  I'll report back in a minute or two.

EDIT: First EA patch wants to download!
" Complete list of changes:
Addresses some issues with Speed 2 and 3 moving too slowly. Some machines will have better results when using Speed 2 and 3 now.
Fix to story progression on/off selection toggle.
Fix for a possible crash with audio code.
Fix for babysitter routing off lots with babies.
Addresses some issues with Vsync and refresh rate problems.
Addresses some issues with DVD authentication errors and drive compatibility on startup.
This update deals with some issues on Mac systems that can crash the game while connecting to AFP servers.
Fix for a freeze that can occur when Sims attempt to clean out bad food from the fridge."

EDIT2: All the color sliders work, but the thumbnail isn't updated.

Are the crashes happening just when the hair is being used, or simply when the package is installed?

I taken a test run with that Peggy Hair and it seems to work as acceptable as the game hairs.

i downloaded it a few hours ago as per the instructions and it was crashing my game to desktop at random intervals and in buy mode. removed it and the crashing has stopped entirely. makes me sad, cuz i really loved it..it was perfect for my selfsim! :(

Well that explains why it crashed to desktop when I entered Build Mode when I had it installed.

Works just fine for me, no crashing in Build or Buy mode yet.  And it's prettier than I expected. I hadn't actually planned to keep this hair on her, but now I just might.

Edit:  I should have known.  After using it for hours, I suddenly crashed, and I've never had an in-game crash before.  I'm trying again to rule it out as a fluke, because I really do like the way the hair looks on this Sim.

That would be my primary complaint, as well.

Do the colour wheel options work with it?

Yup, they work perfectly.  I'm scared of it if it will crash my game, though.

Anyone who charges for sims content needs to have their legs broken.  I swear you don't have this kind of trouble with TES games.

Nice hairstyle pitty it doesn't work properly yet.

Just to confirm, this appears to be repeatedly crashing my game.  After crashing, I tried removing the mod and deleting caches, but it continued to crash on loading.  I could only get the game to load by adding the mod back in.  I changed the hair back to an EA mesh and removed the mod, so hopefully that's the end of that.

This crashes my game to desktop as well.  I found my common thread was I went to map view and zoomed waaaay out, then as I was zooming back in on my female sim I CTD.  I did this repeatedly to see and it did this every time.  I removed it and no longer crash.

Might have something to do with how it is loaded from a distance?

It was nice looking hair.  I prefer not to override things...can not wait until we can get CC again like in Sims 2.

Ugh...  I think Peggy deserves a big pat on the back for bringing out the first CC hair.  But, personally, I think it's an awful hair.  We got so used to the huge EA foreheads on the TS2 women that I think, maybe, Peggy couldn't find proper perspective to make a new hair without inserting another big TS2-style forehead.  Totally misproportioned.

I have verified that the tool she used to edit the mesh prohibits commercial use or redistribution restrictions, by license.

It was made using the vertex format used for clothes (as MilkShape in it's current version does not support the extra color channel data used in hair and faces). I do not know if that is related to the crashes reported, though.

But kudos to her for giving us our first hair mesh :)

That might be down to my suckitude at making Sims... Even with Maxis hair she has a highish forehead.  The Peggy hair does seem to accentuate it though.

That's more of a fivehead or a sixhead... good lord.. (edited for Roflganger. No, the forehead isn't big because of your simming skills. When I clicked on the image on Peggy's own site the poor sim looked like she had some sort of congenital birth defect  Your forehead simply looks bigger because you didn't put on enough trashy makeup on the face to draw attention away from the forehead.)

I wasn't expecting much when I heard Peggy made it. I only downloaded her stuff so I could make my townies look like hookers if I wanted to.  I could see myself using the Peggy hair for some townies I don't intend to play. Sometimes if I run into townies with identical hairdos, I will change the hair of one. If I don't really care about them - they get a haircut that I'd never actually use on a playable, but isn't over the top fugly.

My question though - as bad as it is, it's much better than the bicycle helmet Is it possible to use the mesh but make it overwrite something that I would never inflict on any sim under any circumstances?   No sim deserves the helmet.

I like the hair, but then again I live in Texas, the big hair capital of the Western World.  I will never, ever use the women's mohawk so I am not particularly bothered that it replaces it.

However, if it causes crashes and/or must be purchased, screw that!

(Paysites must die, yada yada).

There's not much to do wrong - you stick the mod in the folder and load the game.  It is very definitely borked.

I'm not sure whether or not it's Peggy's fault (since the game seems prone to crashes anyway), but the answer so far seems to be overwhelmingly yes, it will crash your game.

I read over at GOS that Aikea Guinea actually tried this out before Peggy and was successful, but chose not to release the hair because like this one, it replaced an EAxis hairstyle. I'm wondering if she (he?) had the same crashing problems. If she didn't, it's possible Peggy just messed something up.

Okay, so I don't get this. I took a look at her package file. It has like 8 files in it...Why? It's a mesh, so shouldn't it only be one file?
Mehhh, I don't like how she put it together  :-\

The final verdict is that it's a TEST file.

Quote
We have tried to make this set of female hair. Now we provide it with you for downloading and testing. Because of the test-period, some players can use it normally in Sims3, but some players will meet some problems when playing it in Sims3. We hope that every player can help to test the hair and find out the reason of the problems. Then we can resolve the problems together. We will try our best to make everyone enjoy the game.

This is the link address of the hair.

  [Emphasis supplied]

In other words, she's looking for beta testers.  Too bad EAxis didn't do the same.

From what I understand Aikea Guinea simply edited a existing hair mesh.

Peggy added a new mesh, the problem we current face is there is no way to actually create new ID numbers for new meshes, everything ends up taking up a existing ID number and also it seems Peggy also used Delphy CAS Unitool that so far is limited in use.

Of course at this stage she was just trying to figure out how to make things work and used several tricks to get it to work.

Its possible that the reason it crashes is the fact the game uses several meshes for the different LOD and if Peggy Mesh lack those meshes then I guess that is why it crashes.

If anyone do not understand what LOD means ... its simple, it stands for "level of detail" and TS2 actually used for different level of detail options but mesh creators just used the "High" LOD since it was what most users did.

TS3 on the other had have the "seamless neighborhood" and so LOD is also used depending on how close the mesh is to the camera, zoomed out means they will use the lowest detailed (and intensive) LOD option and zoomed in means they will used the highest LOD option.

Yeah, a Sim(Hair)Guru already stated that over at the crap board (kind of expected this sort of issue anyway because I was reminded of the Sims 2 issue with the first "long dress-like shirts" that were made which were crashing the game when you used the phone).  There was also this:

"First off, this appears to be a Sims 2 asset that was converted to Sims 3. Due to performance reasons we're restricted to a certain amount of Vertices per hair, this hair mod exceeds that number. So for lower end computers, it can lead to slow down and cause instability like crashes and game freezing."

Too bad she didn't say something to that effect on the download page, or in the readme. Beta testers are much more helpful when they know they're beta testing.

Peggy would be the first to release hair purely because of the way she creates hair - she takes a pre-existing poser mesh and just adapts it to the Sims, as opposed to creating the mesh from scratch off a EAxis base like most all others do.

TL;DR / non-mesher version: Peggy dun cheated.

I'm grateful for all the feedback on the hair download, better warned. New sims, new code--so brave players and designers/modders are always risking annoying crashes to further the cause. I suppose i'm gonna wait for some of the kinks to be ironed out for hair files --great news is that there are people doing the work.
I'm impressed with all the meshes coming out!
I had been a silent lurker on this forum since I got the game and the information provided has proved invaluable.

As for charging for hair and clothes files, I guess that's Peggy's prerogative but I did notice on her site that the sims3 downloads were all free.

That excuse is a bunch of bullshit.  My computer is brand new with good hardware in it.  My graphics are all maxed and I have no lag and 0 crash issues.  I only crashed when I was at a distance with that hair installed.  To me that means something is messed up in the hair at a distance.  They failed...

I don't mind beta testing CC so that we can finally get things to work, but they should not blame the user.  I know how to install mods and my computer is very good.

Edited: I downloaded the new version and I no longer crash at a distance.  I just can't get over the 500 mile high forehead.  Yuck.

Delphy's CTU contains no propert support for hair right now - what it outputs if you try to use hair just screws stuff up.  She couldn't have used it to do anything for hers.  Delphy's been working on updating it for hair meshes as I've got replacements working just fine.

Lower LOD meshes aren't just used for zoom in TS3 but also for the portrait image: right now I have a hair that replaces the highest LOD but the portrait images are unchanged.

(Not specifically to you) ...Someone asked upthread why she would replace so many resources.  Not only are there LOD things to replace but if you use a different mapping/textures, you have to replace those too.  Basically like having a mesh + textures for a TS2 hair but ya gotta do all of 'em.  The one I'm working on needs a -lot- of stuff replaced so the file's actually kinda big.  Files tend to be big for TS3.  I think it'll balance out in the end though since you won't need umptyjillion recolours of the same mesh.

If you were having problems with Peggy's and you're willing to be a guinea pig...  Can you please PM me here or on MTS?  I have a hair that's nearing completion (enough to be tested) and would like to get at least a couple other people confirming it doesn't crash their game before I put it up for the masses.

I've been playing on my boyfriends supa-computer while I'm here for the summer, and its definately not lower-end by any means. Hes tests new hardware/builds computers for a living.. his current box is top of the line.. ddr3, solid state, the whole shebang.. it'd be hard to find better.

That said.. lower end computers are definately not the cause of the crashes - I crashed to desktop everytime I zoomed in/out or went into buy mode with it installed on this machine, which is better than what probably 99% of people are using.

There are 50% more vertices in the second release than the first, shooting the "too many vertices" theory in the foot. TS3 meshes typically have 2X - 4X as many vertices as analogous TS2 meshes did. The other change I noticed was the first package assigned the hair to 100% "b__HeadNew__", the second splits the assignments between "b__HeadNew__" and "b__Spine_2".

I have been curious myself why it crashes, because some things may be user education issues, things that maybe didn't make a difference in TS2 but do now. and some things may be "policeable" (via error or warnings) in the plugins themselves.

It was a brave test. While there are certainly a lot of old grievances rehashed, I know all too well from bitter experience that just because it works in your machine does not guarantee that it will not be an embarrassing fooparoonie.

I also hate her site I have to open it in IE for it to load properly.

Also maybe the 50% more vertices is due to adding LOD meshes.
