Don't mind the shouty vole over there - it's a stupid ignoramus, kind of like the village idiot. Speaking of which: why is this a problem? Are your sims permanently welded together? Although the picture was a little bit lulzy, I'll give you that.

That happens with mine when they return from holiday. They separate without problems, though.

Yes they can be separated, I just had to report this, besides, it can be an awesome mod issue.
