THANKS THIS IS GREAT

Hi,

I've been trying to install Sims 2 on a laptop however the base game is on a DVD, which the laptop doesn't have, so I had to share a DVD drive to get it to work.  Everything installs fine until the last bit of Uni; it wants to update the game and wants me to insert the DVD, which is a slight impossibility as it doesn't register the disk being put in the DVD drive of the networked computer and can't run it itself.

Any suggestions?  I really don't feel like paying $99 just to get a CD version of it...

Rip it to an image and mount it with Daemon.

You could try searching the podium for "Daemon CD image" or just Daemon. I know this has been discussed exhaustively before.

To get an image for Daemon, you're going to need something like Alcohol 120% or CloneCD to make them.  Nero will do it, but I'm not sure that it makes a 1:1 copy like the others.  Alternatively, you can download an image file with a BitTorrent Client and mount that with Daemon.

As for mounting an image with Daemon:
1)Boot up Daemon Tools(If it's not started already)
2)Choose "All Options On" under the emulation menu.  The tray icon should turn green.
3)Hide the SafeDisk Protection using sd4hide.
4)Virtual CD/DVD-ROM > Device 0 > Mount Image.  Find the image file.
5)The image is now mounted and acts like a normal DVD.

Alternatively instead of using sd4hide you can use CureROM, which has a wizard for mounting images.

DAEMON Tools
CloneCD
Alcohol 120% (CAUTION:Contains spyware toolbar)

You don't actually need a full 1:1 image to install off of, and since it's only the base game, you will never need to actually insert it again after the install.

installing isn't the problem it's getting Uni to finish installing because it wants the disk inserted to 'check the installation is up to date' that's the problem.  And for some reason I can't seem to manage to make an image of it...*frowns at computer*

The "check to see if installation is up to date" requires TS2 original disk 4 or the DVD, as it is going to compare the version of objects.package. Not the Uni disk.

What might also work: If you have a recordable DVD or a fast network, just transfer the files of your existing TS2 install to the same location on your laptop, and transfer the registry data for TS2.

the laptop doesn't have a DVD, which is where the problem is coming from, but I do have it networked.

How would I go about transfering the registry data?

Extract anything with "sims" in it from the registry of the host system, import on the laptop.
You need the stuff for TS2 under HKLM\Software\EA Games\The Sims 2\ (etc.) as well as (if present) the info under HKCU with the same path.

Since I'm not at home I can't check the actual trees atm.
