Recommendations for a good FPS limiter?

THANKS THIS IS GREAT

I've just tried NVideaInspector - but Sims4 keeps crashing when it is running. Anybody have a favourite they'd like to recommend?

How fast is the game running?  Don't know what graphics card you have, but you can usually force a game to Vsync on Nvidia through the Nvidia settings, and that will limit the speed to the refresh rate of the monitor which is usually about 60.

I've got a GForce GTX 560 and I don't think I understood your question. The game runs fine and normal it's just that (after a while) my GPU fan goes crazy.

<edit> I've Googled vsync and adjusted my computer appropriately. Hopefully things will be better from now on.

I was curious what FPS rate the game was generating?

I don't think it crested 110, but it did go over 100 a couple of times while I was looking. Most of the time it was between 60 and 90. It never dropped below 30 (which is to be expected).

You can edit Config.log, look for FrameRateLimit around line 63

Code:
FrameRateLimit 85

Make sure you set vsync to 'force on' if it doesn't work. But I gather you probably found that out through google. I used the same technique with Sims 3 so it should work.

Sadly, this didn't work for me - I just tried it twice, and both times the game went higher than my adjusted setting. When I checked the config file, it had reverted back to 200.

It is sad.  It's currently working for me at 55.  Mine is not set to read-only, yrt I've never noticed the file being over-written.  Seems odd.

Is it possible that there is also a config log in the install directory that is overwriting the Documents log? I've see that happen with a few other recent titles, but since I don't have TS4, I can't check.

Keeping this here for when Titlights forgets that it doesn't have anything better to do than hang out at MATY.

So what happens if it goes over the frame rate? I never look what mine is while playing games. But my fans have gone crazy while playing.

Eventually you get PC crashes and your video card dies.

So then I checked my frame rate limit in the config file and it says FrameRateLimit 200 is that bad?

Given the conversation and the stated frame rates people are trying to achieve, what the fuck do you think?

Did I say that was my frame rate I have only seen it go to 80 so far in my game that was the game configs #. I was asking if that was bad to have the configs that way. I have never had a problem with any games frame rate because I never actually looked until now.

I just realized there are 2 lines for frame rate in the config. And I hadn't tried setting the config to read-only (duh), so I set both to 60 then made the file read-only.

Here's what happened: the neighborhood/world screen mostly was up around 200 fps. Lots ran 50-90, but I saw an occasional 100-105. Zooming out while on a lot often reduced fps. CAS seemed to run 130-170, but the numbers were right over a portrait and I had a hard time reading them. The config did not get overwritten, but changing it didn't seem to do much.

I'm not overly concerned, since the fps is reasonable while playing lots, which is what I mostly do. But I will try to figure out vsync, to be on the safe side. TS3 fried my old computer because I thought I was using the FPS limiter for months, when it turned out I hadn't correctly installed it. I learned my lesson.

Edit: I'm an idiot. There's a checkbox for vsync in the game's graphical options. Ticked the box, and now I'm at 60 fps, which is my refresh rate. Yays.
