.Package Files on Different Drive
« on: 2011 April 07, 14:35:15 »
THANKS THIS IS GREAT

Lets get this out of the way - I am a durrr-brain!
I have been away from TS3 for about a year, and all my knowledge about the ins-and-outs of mod-management has gone!

I recently built a new PC, and am using a small capacity SSD for the boot. The problem is, this drive is labelled C:\ for obvious reasons.
I won't have enough space on the drive for installing mods, so can I put them somewhere else and still get them to work?

I tried searching - both on here and google - but it's a rather broad set of search terms, and therefore hard to find an answer.

It would be better to look at your setup as a whole than to worry about one game.  Here's a good article to get you started.

I'm not entirely sure what you are getting at with the guide - I did all of those steps as a matter of course as soon as I had installed Win7.
The problem I am facing is that I install all of my games and applications to a 2TB 6gb/s SATA drive, leaving the SSD for boot (and maybe some games in the future if they need a fast read/write, but I can run Crysis 2 on max settings with no trouble so I doubt that will ever come up).

However, all of the guides I find for installing Sims 3 mods tell me to put them in my Documents folder on the C:\ drive, which of course would mean taking up lots of space on the SSD.
I want to know if there is a way I can tell the game where I have placed the mods, so I can put them on my 2TB drive and direct the game to run them from there.

It used to be the norm to place mods for Sims 3 in the game's installation directory, but it sounds like that has changed since I have been away.

I installed my game (and all packs and ep's) on my D drive, then all the custom in my documents on my C drive, and it works just fine.

Yeeeeeah, but the problem I have is that I don't have the space on my C:\ drive for CC, so I would need to place the on another drive, but I don't know if there is a way to tell the game where I've installed them.

EDIT:: Right, I think I might have found a solution. I didn't know you could tell Windows where you want the Documents folder to be - I knew you could go and create one, but you can tell Windows where it is and it will move everything over there, and that will be the new, official Documents folder.
I just did this, then tried loading up Fallout: New Vegas, whose save files were auto-moved into the new Documents folder, and it found the save files fine. Also, I saved and the save file went into the new Documents folder.

I cannot test the Sims 3 yet, but hopefully now the folder is 'official' it shouldn't be a problem.

Why not simply use the older, original framework method, then your mods will go into the base game folder not the documents folder?

If you only have enough hd space to put the game on one drive and the cc on another, I think you have deeper problems beyond whether or not your cc will work.
