How much RAM can my motherboard take?
« on: 2008 January 02, 08:12:21 »
THANKS THIS IS GREAT

Seeing as I'm looking to seriously upgrade my RAM, I've been visiting some stores looking for the best price. At one of them the guy behind the counter told me to look if my motherboard could actually handle getting 2G RAM shoved into it.

Only stupid me forgot to ask *how* exactly I can check that. I already screwed open the box (and cleaned out lots of fluff) but the only thing that tells me is that I'm using DDR 400 Mh RAM, which I already knew.

So taking the risk of getting pointed and laughed at, how do know if my PC will go 'splodie or not?

Look at the manufacture's guide for your mobo. If you don't have a guide and don't know what the board is, open the case and look on the board. It should have brand and model no on there.

eg: My mobo is a ECS K8M88-M2.

With this information you can check the maker's website for the specs.

PCWizard 2008 is freeware that will let you know what mainboard you're using without cracking the case, as well as providing a lot of other information that may be useful.

Crucial's System Scanner can generally figure out your installed and max memory, if you give it permission to do so with IE.

Problem I have is that my PC is not connected to the intnet atm, so don't know how useful those progs would be without it?

Very useful, I believe. I just checked the pcwizard one and it doesn't required any internet connection, just download the app and transfer it to your pc through a usb flash drive or something. Decent app, thanks notovny Wink
