451  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Does this mean what I think it means? on: 2005 November 17, 11:42:02

What do they say in Finnish? Enquiring minds want to know!

I'm always surprised by the noises that animals make in other languages. In English, cats go miaow. In Japanese, they say nyaa nyaa (and in Japanese the noise always repeats). In English, dogs go woof or bow wow. In French, they go hien hien, according to Richard, who may or may not be making this up.

It's weird that noises change according to what particular language you're listening in.

Actually I haven't paid that much attention to what the vampires are saying, but generally when you type the same-sounding word in English and Finnish, it turns out quite different. Not to mention the animal sounds you wrote about, even the same exact sound will be spelled differently, which confuses my American husband to no end. For example, we also have the word "tie" in Finnish, (meaning "road") but the pronounciation is different, more like "tee-eh". The "i" is pronounced more like the "e" in English overall.

For me, it causes confusion when people use spellings like "kewl" for "cool", because if I were to spell it phonetically, it would be "kuul". And if you're going to spell out a word for me using the English pronounciation for the letters, you'll have to do it slowly, even if understanding whole words in English is no problem.

I do think bump maps do improve the look of some clothing. Having a print on a shirt appear elevated looks pretty cool, for example, and some sweaters look better with it. Not all skins need it, though.

Have you tried the 6.1.7.7 driver?
I swore by the 77.77 until I rolled back to this one..thanks to my husband and his fascination with W.O.W.  Roll Eyes

No, thanks for the tip! Would you happen to know where I can find that version? Can't seem to find it at the Nvidia page.
454  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Any Decent Custom Hair? on: 2005 November 16, 13:44:34
If your video card supports it, it gives the illusion of depth. Also, apparently from what I hear a lot of Nvidia cards do support it but for some reason the game doesn't enable it for them by default unless you go through some process to remedy that. I don't recall how because I have an ATI card so I didn't pay too much attention.

I think that problem was fixed with Nightlife. I always thought I'd seen bump maps, until I actually saw them in game after installing Nightlife  Cheesy. But, in return, I lost object specularity (upon installation, with the same graphics card as before).
455  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Does this mean what I think it means? on: 2005 November 16, 09:19:06
Well, since that's what vampires in Nightlife say, I think it was an educated guess. Wink

Ahh, ok. I always miss the point when sims speak is spelled in an English way  Tongue.

Does the BLEH! BLEH! mean that Pescado has gotten Nightlife?  Shocked

You'd make a great spouse for any Finnish male if you can read guys' grunts and other incomprehensible sounds like that!
457  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Any Decent Custom Hair? on: 2005 November 15, 22:04:48
OK, sorry, I misunderstood your statement.

I do think it is important for all the mesh creators to understand what polygons and vertices mean, and I think it should be their responsibility to ensure that high polygon objects are avoided. It's true there is a huge non-English Sims community out there, and passing on information like that to all the creators seems difficult, although I have to say that a large part of the non-native English speakers still understand a fair amount of English, and many non-English websites also have an English section. They just may not be seeking the information in the first place. I have no idea if polygon numbers are a hot topic in the German or any other Sims communities. The English Sims communities are the only ones I visit, and I don't even know any other Finnish object creators, not to mention Sims 2 creation discussion forums in Finnish, but maybe other "bilingual" people from larger languages can do more.
458  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: is there a doctor in the house? on: 2005 November 15, 18:57:15

I have a theory, but no one of the doctors accept it: sitting a long time in front of the computer, and mainly playing games - cause headaches, and epileptic seizures; it's written in each manual of each game.

Playing computer games will only cause epileptic seizures to those who are prone to it. Most people will never get a seizure no matter how much time they spend in front of their monitor. Usually it has to do with what's called photosensitive epilepsy, where a light flickering at a certain rate will cause a seizure for those rare people who have it. Those warnings on the video games are for these rare cases.

But sitting in front of the computer can certainly cause head aches, as any static work will do.

An EEG is not routinely used to examine head ache problems, at least not where I live, not even at a neurologist's appointment. Only if there is suspicion of epileptic seizures.

Various (piano) keyboards from various places - all around ~3300 polygons. At least keyboards tend to be 2-4 square items, so it gets averaged out.

More creators really should post their polygon counts online, and the information that it's important should be propagated more widely, and not just in English :-/.

3300 polygons for a 4-tile object is not bad at all, in my opinion. The original Maxis piano has over 3000 polygons, as well. But, yes, I agree in general it is important to keep an eye on the polygon/vertex counts.

When I started up my site, I considered posting update information in more than one language, but since I only speak two languages fluently, I would have needed someone to translate full sentences for me every time I update my site. And then which languages should you include besides English? German, French, Spanish, Portuguese? That amount of text will clutter up your site pretty fast, and will still not cover all the languages that your visitors speak, since at least my site gets visitors from all over the world. There are translating sites that'll translate a whole site for you, and I see people using those on my website on a regular basis. With the way my site is built, it seems to work pretty well, too. I think that's a much better solution than having all the information on your site posted in 5+ languages. And "1500 polygons" should be pretty self-explanatory in any language if the polygon count is what people are looking for.

Which ever language is used, I would like to see more creators to post the polygon or vertex counts for their objects, or alternatively state that the objects are within the recommended limits
460  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Any Decent Custom Hair? on: 2005 November 12, 08:22:09
The problem is that not all custom hairstyles have all ages, or some of the ages don't match. Say, someone used a blond Maxis hair and then only changed the teen, adult and elder hair, making them black. If you make the whole hairstyle genetic, then toddlers and children will have blond hair and only get the correct black hair when turning into teenagers. Also, you're going to have a ton of identical toddler and child hairs, because these have not been edited in most cases, even if they match the color otherwise.

463  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Any Decent Custom Hair? on: 2005 November 08, 05:27:41
I think one of the reasons custom hair meshes look "plastic" is because, from what I understand, impossible to animate them like Maxis hair. Long Maxis hair moves so smoothly, but I think there is only so much movement you can have with custom hair. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.
464  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Where Are Edwin's Glasses? on: 2005 November 04, 19:15:46
Hairfish, I have noticed there are some glasses that are specific to an age group, however if a sim who is wearing them in that age group grows up, they get to keep them in the next age group. Those particular ones may be child glasses. Let me go look...

*edit: Nope, they aren't although the round glasses that little boys can wear are like that. I thought they might be women's glasses but I checked every age group and gender and cannot find them. let me go snoop in the game files.  Grin

The round glasses that only show up for kids in Bodyshop become available to all age groups if you make a recolor out of them.
465  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Smart Milk and the college years on: 2005 October 11, 12:36:23

It resets the sim's IQ to its baseline, which is 100.  Smart milk and the the thinking cap only boost your sims IQ or rate of learning temporarily, except that when your sim gets stuck on smart milk, they continue learning faster until one of the things happens that JM mentioned above.  Then they are normal again.

Yeah, I understood that, I was only joking  Tongue
466  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Smart Milk and the college years on: 2005 October 07, 13:32:21
The Smart Milk stickiness appears to take effect the moment a toddler drinks a smart milk, consistently. It remains in effect until one of the following happens:

1. The sim is reinstanced due to transport to a community lot(temporary), moving in, or being deleted.
2. The toddler is bathed.
3. You install a patch or expansion pack which causes a large-scale reset.

So, does this mean that bathing reduces your IQ down to 1/3?   Shocked
467  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Anybody else having coffee cup weirdness with NL? on: 2005 October 07, 13:27:07
Both before and after Nightlife, the coffee cup hack doesn't always work in some houses in my game. I don't know why.
468  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Smart Milk and the college years on: 2005 October 06, 12:57:10
As for the skill learning, playful/serious comes into play too, so who knows.

It's not just playfulness/seriousness that affects skill gaining. They only affect creativity and logic, respectively, while neat sims learn cleaning skill faster, active sims learn body skill faster and outgoing ones learn charisma points at a faster rate. Personality points have nothing to do with learning mechanical or cooking, though.

I used to have a Radeon 9600 XT on my computer that has XP on it with no problems. Now my husband is using the same card on his computer (that also has XP).
470  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Bump Mapping works with my Gforce 6800GT & Nightlife. on: 2005 September 29, 19:45:10
Smoothing edges makes the edges less jagged. If you have the smooth edges slider all the way in the low end, when you look at something like walls in the game, the edges look jagged, kind of like a saw. When you slide it all the way up, the edges look very smooth and straight, but it's more demanding on your computer graphics.
471  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Request: Non-ADD Cooking Hack on: 2005 September 29, 13:42:47
True, I could use the top-only stove, and I already did that in one college residence. I still like having the rest of the cooking choices, too, though. Only grilled cheese might get monotonous over time though  Cheesy.
472  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Bump Mapping works with my Gforce 6800GT & Nightlife. on: 2005 September 29, 13:31:21
wow, cool, i didn't know the game had bumpmpas at all. actually i did'nt know at bumpmap were.

Now, are the bumpmaps one of the image files that is contained withing a clothing file? i mean, if i export a clothing file, i will get different image files for the texture, for the alpha and for the bumpmaps?

Yup, the bump map is the gray image file some of the clothing has. I think it's called a "normal" or something similar.
473  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Request: Non-ADD Cooking Hack on: 2005 September 29, 08:00:14
Yeah, it's especially annoying when sims with full cooking skill keep autonomously making Lobster Thermidor all the time, especially because that meal has a higher failure rate to begin with.

I'll have to try piling up the Resume Cooking action. It would still be nice if I didn't need to wait for the sim to start cooking to line up more actions.
474  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Bump Mapping works with my Gforce 6800GT & Nightlife. on: 2005 September 29, 07:57:34
Ok, I'll bite...
(hiss, bleh, etc)

1. how do you know if bump mapping is enabled?
2. Where are driver shaders and how does one force them to do anything?
3. What's a RivaTuner?
4. What's object specularity?
5. Would you expect a GeForce 5700 to show bump mapping?
6. Is this anything to do with anti-aliasing?

1. It may be hard to tell. For months I thought I could see bump maps, but turns out I didn't (I could see them in Bodyshop but not in the game). You can see the bump map effect on some clothing (but not all, since not all outfits have bump maps at all) where it makes the surface seem more 3D. A lot of sweaters that have a texture to them have a bump map. Also the bump map makes underwear look elevated from the skin even if the mesh itself is just flat. It may be hard to tell if you can see the bump maps or not, some comparison pictures with and without might help.

4. Object specularity gives the objects a reflective surface. Say, a table top looks shiny when the light hits it at a certain angle. The Maxis piano looks shiny when object specularity is working. Without it, most objects have a matte surface with no light reflecting off of it.

6. I don't think bump maps or object specularity have anything to do with anti-aliasing.
475  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Request: Non-ADD Cooking Hack on: 2005 September 29, 04:07:21
I already posted this request on another forum but it received no interest, so I thought I'd post it here.

I have not seen a hack or a request for this before, so I thought I'd ask if it would be possible to make a hack that prevents sims from forgetting their food into the oven while cooking. My sims seem to get constantly distracted by something else, or even leave for class, and end up burning the food unless I keep an eye on them constantly. You also can't pile up any actions on their queue for after cooking or there'll be a fire.

You're probably busy updating your hacks for Nightlife right now, but if you have time and interest for this in the future, I'd appreciate it.

(And before anyone says the title of this post is politically incorrect and making fun of people with ADD, the title is a reference to my dear ADD husband who cooks just like my sims and will likely burn down our apartment at some point. Unfortunately no sprinklers are available IRL.)
