51  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: EAxis House of Phail: Feb 09 on: 2009 February 26, 22:05:28
I just realised that I haven't posted either of the two houses I created this month, hopefully I will have time to put them up tomorrow. As for next month's house I don't have any preferences so surprise me!
52  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: EAxis House of Phail: Feb 09 on: 2009 February 02, 18:50:15
I already have changed them... and the tree surgeon paid a visit.  Grin

This month's house of choice is Pleasantview's 10 Oak Street:

Rules:

1. No CC.  Please indicate stuff packs so people who wish to download your lot know what to expect.  Pictures are required, either available for download, on a slideshow, or posted in this thread.

2. By entering this challenge, you agree to take constructive criticism.  If you wish to judge someone else's entry, you should be respectful but honest.

3. Your lot does not have to be Awesomespec, although it is encouraged.

4. You may move internal walls and add external walls but you may NOT move original external walls.

5. Lots may be furnished, unfurnished, or partially furnished.  You can even upload both furnished and unfurnished versions.

I have M&G installed, download a flattened edges version from here.

Perhaps somebody could post a basegame compatible flattened version, otherwise you can flatten your own - it's N001_Lot32.package of the Pleasantview lots and the LotAdjuster tool is on MTS2.

EDIT: added rules (thanks Emma, I think my brain is not fully functional today).

EDIT 2: linky to Mootilda's basegame compatible version (or scroll down the page): http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,14350.msg410834.html#msg410834

Problem is if someone like me flattens and saves it you will then have a M&G compatible house that is of limited use. I don't have Numenor's base/any game wotsit on my computer otherwise I'd do it.

The little cabin does look like a good choice for this month. Can somebody else do a basegame version of it, flatten it if required then kick off a new thread?
56  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: EAxis House of Phail: January 09 on: 2009 January 31, 20:25:27
Ah well I see I have missed the Malaysian-time end of January deadline for house no2 but here goes anyway.

I went with a sort of space age theme, at least with choice of decor and furniture plus the inclusion of a lift. It's mostly open plan downstairs so is most definitely not awesome spec but it is an easy house to play provided you don't mind the possibility of the odd fridge raid by a visitor. It has been made with all EPs/SPs except teen/celebration stuff and thoroughly tested with the EAxian Newson family.

Front of house with paved path to front door, covered sunken hot tub and greenhouse for the gardening sims.

Ground floor - the entrance leads into a large open area with kitchen, study and games. There is a spiral staircase and a lift to the upstairs floor. The lounge is separate with a downstairs bathroom and toilet.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms and a further bathroom with bath for bathing toddlers and a large patio area.

(My original plan was to have cowplants hence the name, but it didn't work out that way in the end.)
57  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Broken M&G Window on: 2009 January 29, 12:44:34
Ok, I've had a chance to look at the M&G objectsXX files in SimPE and I was correct. It looks the artist originally created it with three separate textures: one for the outer frame; one for the inner frame and one for the glass as those resources are still present. The two frame textures are used in both the interior and exterior window meshes. Assuming that they have the same restrictions as community modders they're only allowed 2 recolourable subsets and 3 into 2 does not go! Their fix was to produce a single combined texture with a single material definition which has been set to alpha blend hence the sort order problems when rendered in game. A number of the other windows do have three associated textures but are mapped as interior + glass OR exterior + glass thus conforming to the two subset limit.

It can be fixed by creating a second recolourable subset to separate out the glass from the frame and likewise splitting the textures to facilitate easy recolouring. I might have a play with this today to confirm that it has actually been texture mapped the way I'm assuming.
58  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Broken M&G Window on: 2009 January 27, 22:38:49
Without going as far as extracting and looking at the mesh, I'd say that it's been incorrectly tagged with alpha materials throughout which means that the it's drawn in any old order as the game graphics engine cannot correctly sort/draw the polygons within shape in the correct order. This means the polys will randomly draw in front or behind each other as the camera moves around it. The mesh itself will need to be fixed so that there is an alpha material for the windows and a separate (non-alpha) material group for the frame. The fix may be straightforward if there are two material groups (fix the frame one so that it is not alpha) otherwise a second material group will need to be created and the frame textures associated with it. I think this may also involve splitting a single texture file into two as alpha textures have a gray scale transparency (see-through graduated to solid) while other textures just have on/off per pixel. I may have time to look at this tomorrow as I've got M&G if nobody else does.

Something else that really bothers me about Sims 3 is the fact that EVERY sim gets a cell phone.... whether you like it or not.

Perhaps the choice will now be what make/model and which network to connect to...

I really, really hope they have dropped the in-game advertising crap; I go out of my way to avoid it in real life so don't expect to be hit with it in a computer game.
60  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: EAxis House of Phail: January 09 on: 2009 January 26, 21:55:14
I've ended up doing three houses this month probably because the first one was an absolute sod to finish and I'm still not happy with it. This is number 2 of 3, otherwise known as 1097 Barclay Square. It's designed to be a home entertainment/recreation business so there is a ticket machine and open/close sign ready to go... all you have to do is get on the phone and register a home business. It's essentially a house of two halves with most of it open to the public and a private two storey flat that is accessed from the middle floor.

Front - outside is a large swimming pool and play area for the sim brats.

Ground Floor - public recreation area with male/female toilets and a shower room. There are a couple of vending machines and even a waste bin for neat sims to dump their rubbish in.

Middle Floor - public gym area and two balconies, one with sun loungers and the other a hot tub. There is the entrance to the private flat with a kitchen dining area on its lower floor.

Top Floor - private bed/sitting/bathroom and access to private balcony with sun loungers.

Somehow I've ended up with 3 quite different entries for this month and now need to test them all. It looks like I've a busy weekend ahead of me!
62  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: TS3 L&P on: 2009 January 23, 23:06:20
No surprise on the slippage then, I'm still betting it will be released just in time for Thanksgiving. It doesn't even sound like it's gone beta yet so, assuming that they do some sort of community beta test, you can expect yet more delays as 'untrained' users will find yet more bugs.
63  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Pregnacy and Apartments on: 2009 January 16, 08:10:06
Wasn't there some borkination with the pregnancy morphs sometime around BV/FT? I seem to remember the game wrongly advancing the morph state (1st->2nd, 2nd->3rd) trimester on certain clothes changes but I thought it was fixed with a patch. I don't think it actually advanced the pregnancy though, just the appearance.

I'm enjoying working with a smaller lot for a change so I thought I'd post a picture of the work in progress. I've gone a bit back to front this time and finished the exterior before really starting on the interior so it's a lot less finished than it looks! It'll probably be a couple of weeks before I can complete and upload it as I must stop being distracted and write an essay for uni.

65  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: EAxis house of FAIL: December on: 2009 January 02, 13:57:41
The Desiderata lot (1097) looks simple enough that the shell could be built from scratch using the basegame - unless there is some functionality in there that I'm missing.
66  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: EAxis house of FAIL: December on: 2009 January 02, 09:54:20
I like the look of 1097 West Dreaming Drive as it's got a slightly different shape and a massive garden area to do stuff with.
67  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: EAxis house of FAIL: December on: 2009 January 02, 08:55:57
There's a couple of houses in the lot bin that I think came with NL as they have drives but no icon unlike later EPs/SPs. One is called tiny house and the other small home. Both are small, boxy and boring but also have a decent amount of garden area to do something with.

EDIT: added pics of small home (left) and tiny house (right) - sorry about the quality but I took them in the neighbourhood view.
68  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: EAxis house of FAIL: December on: 2008 December 31, 20:19:01
Thanks for the comments, I think I'm best when I stick with modern design though I might have a go at something more exotic for next month now that I have M&G installed and I'm feeling inspired by Faizah's roofs. Are we going for a small lot for January? I think the only EAxis neighbourhood I've got installed is Desiderata Valley though I seem to remember there were some very bland small lots in the Nightlife sub-hood that might be worth doing.

@Jim: Now I know who the mystery bin kicker is! Seriously, when testing this lot the bin would be kicked over at least once a day but at least the landlord dealt with the resultant roaches.
69  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: EAxis house of FAIL: December on: 2008 December 30, 23:11:24
Here finally is my offering for this month's House of Fail and just in time. The politest thing I can think to say about the whole apartment build process is that EAxis don't make it easy, so here after no small amount of blood, sweat and tears I present 111 Stratford Street reworked as a 4 apartment block and renamed to 111 Shakespeare Street. There is one ground floor apartment and a further three split level apartments, all offered fully furnished - just supply your own computer and a few deco items to add that personal touch. Relax in the hot tub or sauna after going for a swim or chill with friends in the communal bar area. Each apartment has its own private balcony or garden area in addition to having the run of the communal gardens and play area. The apartment block has been fully playtested with four families hence the comments on the build process - having to move everyone out to replace the fixed/updated block then move them all back in is not my idea of fun game play!

Made with all EPs and most SPs upto and including M&G though I don't think I used any M&G stuff, thought I'd save that for January's House of Fail. Weekly rental costs 1467 - 2590 simoleans,

70  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Bad memory of an engagement on: 2008 December 24, 23:11:32
I'm not sure if it's related, but some of my sims fall out of love on getting engaged such that one or both have to fall in love again so that the propose option appears for them to then marry. Sometimes the engagement kiss is enough to have them fall in love again but other times it isn't. I'm also patched all the way through.
71  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: TS3 L&P on: 2008 December 19, 23:48:02
When I saw a recent gameplay trailer I was stunned at the extent of how much of The Sims 3 has been recycled from The Sims 2. Not surprised, as I figured it would probably happen, but not quite as much as what I saw.

Actually it makes sense to do development using existing content as it's quicker and cheaper. It also gives the target audience a reference point to compare with, which can of course be a bit of a double-edged sword. I'd wait and see just how much of what we're getting in trailers makes it into the final game.
72  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: TS3 L&P on: 2008 December 18, 22:38:21
However, I'd actually prefer a smaller town, so I'm wondering if we can choose the town's size, much like the way we can choose lot sizes. That would be cool. Cheesy
You can't even choose the town's name. And you can't choose where to place lots, only what to build on them. So no, you won't be able to choose the town's size, although you could manually kill off most of the sims and bulldoze most of the lots.

No doubt you'll have to wait for them to release the separate editing tools EP to do any of this. I get the impression that EAxis initially want us to be playing their vision of TS3 rather than creating our own; why expand functionality when you can take it away and make the players pay to add it back in later?
73  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: NEWS: WE CAN HAZ LEGAL THREATS? on: 2008 December 15, 11:28:00
I don't get why they're only after Mediafire, do you think they don't know about any other file hosting sites?

Perhaps the country that Mediafire is located in has more easily enforcable copyright laws thus making them an easier target.
74  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: NEWS: WE CAN HAZ LEGAL THREATS? on: 2008 December 14, 21:52:05
I think this probably says more about what we can expect when Sims 3 comes out and that the EA legal department are just testing the water in preparation. Most people who receive a letter like that will panic and remove any and all 'questionable' links.
75  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: M&G install problem on: 2008 December 13, 21:08:55
I was thinking the deleeshus Securom might be the root of this. I have a cunning plan that I'm just testing now. I let it install up until the point where it said it was going to check for updates - helpfully they prompt you at this point with a separate dialog. Looking in the new shiny folder under program files everything appears to be there so I killed the installer autorun.exe process which stopped it from complaining and uninstallling. I'm just about to check I've got the right no CD exe in place then I'll see if it will run.

(Unfortunately I've managed to already get Securom on my system somehow - it must have been Bioshock although I only ever ran a No CD exe for that as well. I need to check whether any non game companies use it before removing the damned thing as I don't want to break any legit non-game software.)

EDIT: I've got the game to run ok and load up my MATY Inverted 'hood complete with custom content. I did have to add my own shortcut to the desktop so I assume that would have been created last thing in the install process after the check for any updates. The new content appears to be there, complete with a new architecture category and build slope angle option so I'm assuming I haven't broken anything by stopping the install at the point I did. I will test more and I've got it all backed up anyway just in case it goes horribly wrong.
