If it were a hard drive failure, you'd probably know. You'd be getting check disk errors when booting into Windows (assuming you're on a PC) prompting you to do disk scans, and if it's a drive with moving parts (not an SSD), you'll usually hear loud whirring or scraping noises.

If you use any mods besides Twallans or AM, make sure they are up to date. Any time I have experienced crashing, it was due to an out of date mod that I had forgotten to update. Additionally, make sure your game and expansions are patched.
ETA: This advice assumes that this is not rig failure due to insufficient RAM/GPU/hard disk.

As far as AM versions go, there is only one version of AM available for download in the AM thread; the latest version. If your game is updated to 1.67 and you're not getting an error message at start up indicating that your mods are out of date, then you are running the most recent version of AM.

AM is still labeled as a work in progress, which means that changes are expected in the future. Each version has an expiration date to force users to update and reduce the amount of people complaining about BFBVFS, and/or reporting problems that have already been resolved. The expiration date, and the lack of direct instruction on how to modify it, is an anti-dumbass feature. In this case, the FOJ has probably been busy with site changes and hasn't gotten around to updating AM. These things could be avoided if people would SUPPORT THE MUNICIPALITY.

Alright, I'm seeing the same thing when I try to download AM. While waiting for a fix, the AM XML can be modified to have a longer expiration period. WARNING: Using an outdated version of AM is not recommended.
I tried two Google searches for how to do this, and came up with the answer as the top response both times, so this is as far as I go.

Hello Mr. Pescado, I got an expiration message today (04/28/2014). I don't know what your plans are but if you ceased to update this mod could you please remove the expiration? Otherwise we'd end up with unplayable worlds because we had to uninstall awesomemod.
First, there is no need to address your post. The FOJ sees all and will respond if needed. Second, you need to update AM from the thread. As there aren't dozens already posting this error, I am inclined to believe this is a user issue. If that doesn't work, then you probably have an old version of AM still installed somewhere, so you will need to find and nuke it. WARNING: The Eurotard is unreliable, as it is not very bright.

Maybe I've erred in thinking it's alive. The lack of critical analysis skills and repetitive nature of its, frankly, weak retorts suggest that the Swastitard is actually an undead opossum and is in the same type of death throes as a decapitated chicken. Or, am I simply engaging in wishful thinking?
Either way, having the betatard in its corner is punishment enough.
