There is no such thing as too many chocolates Grin

I'm glad you had a good day for your birthday Cheesy

My first computer was primarily a word-processor, but you could also run programs in CP/M+ on it.  (Brits and my fellow Aussies may remember the Amstrad PCW).  It had a whopping 256k memory and no hard drive!  I can remember playing a text game exploring a cave, and playing trivial pursuit with very simple green-on-black graphics.  Also remember buying magazines that had the code in basic for programs and coding them up, teaching myself some simple programming.

And I'm another simmer who won't be seeing 40 again - I'm 42 (until late next month).  I always hoped that at 42 I'd discover the answer to the 'great question of life, the universe and everything', even if I didn't know the question - no such luck I'm afraid.

One of those movies (the one by the woman in Australia) reminded me of you Brynne.

The movie showed a romance sim doing what he does best ... with a series of different women ... at the end of the movie he opened his front door to the consequnces of his actions.

I saw all those toddlers in his front yard and thought of your Don Lothario with his many toddlers.

I use TJ's college adjuster to randomly select aspirations for my sims.  It adds interest to the game if I don't select aspirations suited to the sim's personality.  An in-game ability to select a 'random' aspiration at teen trans and at the end of sophomore year at uni would be neat - then again, given how the in-game randomiser works for personalities, maybe I'll stick with the college adjuster.

That actually sounds interesting. By TJ I assume you mean twojeffs?

But I think there just aint enough aspirations out there. There are only 5 distinct aspirations, w/ pleasure being just a mish-mash of 2 of the 5, and 5 asps spread out among 100s of sims, even if it were an even distribution, means dozens of sims w/ the same exact asp. So its kind of hard to have variety w/ that.

Yes I mean Twojeffs.  His college adjuster, which looks like a stack of phonebooks, has the options to randomise aspiration, personality and skills.  Also deletes stuck kicky bags, stuck phones, gives electronic items (and satisfies the want to purchase electronic items) and does some college related stuff around GPA, semester, etc.  I won't have NL until later this week, so I don't know if the college adjuster is NL compatible.

Taking this thread in another direction - what I'd like to see is a utility that will grab my Sims family trees and print them.  Perhaps an add-on like bodyshop or homecrafter.

Oh and yeah - a middle-aged lifespan would be great.  If they ever did a demographic poll of their users -  i.e. if they asked how long have you been simming & combined that with asking age of player, I think they'd find that the majority of their long-term, loyal customers are older than the average BBS user.  This is a significant section of their market they could be catering to.

Also more stuff for men.  And elders.  And a pack that enabled LTW for the Uni careers (as well as some new careers).  In my larger neighbourhoods I restrict my sims to 1 child, or 2 in rare circumstances - so many of the family LTWs are just not achievable.  More career LTW for Family sims would be nice, my neighbourhoods tend to be overrun with Captain Heroes.

Thanks Pegasys.  Ctrl-shift recovered my data.  You might like to add how to recover a file to the help file.

I had 2 other windows open - one was my sims game, which was paused.  The other window was my email program (Outlook) which may have been doing one of it's periodic 'check for email' things at the time.

Pegasys, I'm getting an error message when I try to open my database.

Quote
"Sims2.SIM" is damaged and cannot be opened.  Use the recover command to recover this file.

I can't find the recover command to recover my data.

The error happened when I was updating a child to a teen and updating her aspiration.  That worked ok.  Then I want to put in her LTW - tried clicking on the LTW fields to get the drop down list of LTWs and the data base didn't do anything for a few seconds and then it crashed.  Now when I try to open I'm getting the above error message.

As I'm the only person who asked about importing GEDCOM files, there doesn't seem to be a high demand for it.  Since it's not a quick and easy addition to your database, it wouldn't be worth your time for you to add it just for one person.  Consider my request withdrawn.

In the 'do you want to add a sim' dialogue box, the 'no' is on the left and the 'yes' on the right. I automatically kept clicking on 'no'. Don't know if it's counter-intuitive or me being kackhanded.

I had the same issue too.  Maybe it's because I'm left handed too?

I was using tab for field navigation as well.  When I was adding a partner, the marital status field didn't like the tab key for some reason - had to move my hand over to the mouse and select the marital status that way.

While I don't have nightlife yet (although I intend to get it soon), I think it would be neat if the physical data had a couple more categories beyond hair, eyes and skin tone - such as makeup, full face makeup, facial hair.  Then the database could be searched to find someone who matches a sims turn-ons or turn-offs.

Please don't think that I'm criticising your efforts or that I don't like the database - I love it.  I guess I'm just a little bit anal retentive in my own particular style.

I've been having fun playing with this dbase.

I was a little concerned that I couldn't print a household report without getting all the households - then I discovered the search button Cheesy  Very nice search feature.

A couple of questions/issues :

* I've been using a genealogy program to keep track of my sims data, and I know I'm not the only one who does this - any chance of being able to import data in GEDCOM format?  Then I wouldn't have to retype the data that I've already got in the genealogy program.

* When a sim marries, and I then change the surname of one of the sims in the database, the children display the parent's new surname, however the spouse field doesn't update the name.  I find I have to delete the union then relink the couple.  (Eg if Mary Smith marries Bob Jones and becomes Mary Jones then Mary's children will correctly show their mother's name as Mary Jones, however Bob is still pointing to Mary Smith as his spouse, and I can't click to go to Mary's record by clicking in Bob's spouse field unless I put in a new link to Mary Jones).  I hope I've explained that without being too confusing.

That glitch aside, I really like this program.  Thanks for sharing it with us.
1286  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Database almost ready... on: 2005 October 20, 04:48:46
I have so much paper on my desk - family notes, thoughts on where I'm going with each sim, future spouse possibilities & whether they've met yet, where they'll live when they do marry, family trees printed in a genealogy program, etc.

A database I could access by alt-tabbing would make my desk so much neater!  This is a great idea, hope it's released soon!
1287  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Preferrable Houses on: 2005 October 03, 19:15:42
I like inexpensive houses with cheap furniture because I play with Pescado's No20kHandout mod.  I need small to medium, relatively inexpensive houses for my financially challenged graduates, with 2 or 3 bedrooms - or room to expand later - and preferably a foundation and/or a second bathroom.  (If they're really broke, they get the smallest lot with a 3x2 bathroom and live on the lawn until they can afford a real house).

I like houses to be decorated, even if only cheap paint and floor coverings, as I suck at interior decoration.

I play TS2U (not getting NL until Pescado's fixed it) with Pecado's Director's Cut.  I want houses that work well with these hacks - so I'm not into pretty diagonal doors that make my game go ugly, or bathrooms too close to each other that won't work well with BathroomUsesYou.

I don't want to download a house with hacks.  I'm choosy about which hacks I allow into my game (after a bad experience where I downloaded the alienware computer with a house) I'd prefer it if builders made their houses hack-free and let me decide what hacks I want in my game.  Similar situation with custom walls & floors - I'm sick of files in my download directory with names that are alphanumeric garbage.

I hate building houses.  If anyone knows a free site where I can find houses that fit my criteria, please let me know.

BTW, Cwykes, I have your Willow Walk series already.  As my sim families expand, I find the houses are easy to expand by adding an upstairs ... they're the kind of houses I look for.
1288  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Grim Reaper Question on: 2005 August 29, 16:24:09
My daughter downloaded SIMPE and used that to fix the situation.  She then had 2 deaths (old age and fright) to test it, and Grimmy turned up to perform his duties both times.

As well as this neighbourhood on my son's computer, she also has a different neighbourhood on mine.  While she's staying here away from her own computer, she uses whichever computer is available to play.  She has been warned not to fubar my installation of the Sims.

From her: Thanks for your help Smiley

BTW, although I knew the general meaning of fubar I never knew that it was an acronym.  Being a collector of useless trivia, I'd like to say thanks from me for that info.
1289  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Grim Reaper Question on: 2005 August 28, 14:40:51
My daughter has a problem with the Grim Reaper, and she's worried that she may be looking forward to her game turning into a big fiery ball visible from space.

She's visiting me from interstate, and having seen the hacks I use, has gone nuts with hacks and tried game-breaking in ways that never occurred to me.

She moved the Reaper in to one of her lots using the Tombstone of L & D and then couldn't get rid of him from the lot.  She used Inge's teleporterplus shrub to send him to the Townie pool.   Her sims are rolling wants to be friends with him, they can call him on the phone (although this causes the sim making the call to freeze until she resets the sim with boolprop tce), and she doesn't know what will happen when the Grim Reaper will be required in his professional capacity, as no sims have died since the event.

She wants to know :
1. Is her neighbourhood totally screwed?  How big a fireball can she expect?
2. How can she fix it?  She's been playing this neighbourhood on my son's computer, which doesn't have SimPE installed yet, but she'll download it (if necessary) and tell her brother after the fact.
