I really like the broken plumbob concept, but I thought the design needed moar obvious breakage and duct tape. So FFS logo, Retard-o card, Moar Fight spork, and the Macro-caffeinate mug get my votes. I will definitely buy the mug if it's one of the winrars.

There are three kinds of trees and six kinds of plants.  Plan your gardening areas accordingly.  Gardening areas should be made of threes and sixes, not 11's or 17's!  The number of gardening squares should not be random!

Again, is this aesthetics? Thanks.

My issue, and I'm not quite sure how to word this, is that on other sites, often I see greenhouses whose available gardening space consists of strange numbers of plots.  I don't have any use for a 7-farmable-tile-greenhouse.  There are 6 types of plants, so I want multiples of 6.

I think it's going to depend on the function of the greenhouse. When I'm planting multiple crops (for juices or selling), I have to separate and delineate plots for each crop so the gpsign works, which then requires a larger greenhouse and whatnot. But if it's just a family greenhouse for fresh food points, I'm usually only planting one crop at a time. In that case, I maximize greenhouse space because those walls are pricey.

Great summary, btw!

Not that I can imagine having. The only hacks I have right now are Awesome. : \

Did you shift-click on the newspaper in debug mode (boolprop testingcheatsenabled true) to select a specific job? That's what SimWardrobe and Havelock are referring to, not to a hack.

I've had trouble with this hack for a while, too. Even calling during proper days/times, the option just never appears on the sim pie menu. Sadly, I can't date the trouble to a specific installation, but it may have been Ikea.

Dizzy has been maintaining his mods at The Laden Swallow. You can find updated versions there.
57  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: New laptop user, some questions on: 2008 August 30, 13:17:19
I use a little laptop lapdesk... it has a couple things that stick up so the laptop is propped up and the vents aren't blocked. It also has a cushion on the bottom, which makes it more comfortable since this thing is heavy. I also shut down background tasks and disconnect from the internet, unless I'm just loading the game to check something. I don't generally get overheating problems unless the house is really, really hot (no A/C). If it happens, I just exit the game and let the laptop standby and cool down for a short time.

I don't use a USB mouse anymore because my laptop has a scrollbar on the touchpad, which does the same thing as a scroll wheel. (It even zooms in/out in the game.) I disabled the touchpad tap-click, though, because I was constantly selecting things when I was only trying to move the mouse. But like others have already said, touchpad vs. mouse is going to be a matter of personal preference. Using a mouse irritates my arm and wrist, no matter how ergonomically correct my set up, so it's touchpad for me.

Something else to consider if you're going the desk route and don't like the laptop keyboard: you can get a USB keyboard and set up the laptop so it's propped up on a desk, and then put the external keyboard and mouse on a keyboard tray.

59  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: AL gameplay questions and help on: 2008 August 30, 01:15:48
Since this is an AL question post, I feel safe asking this: has anyone experienced problems with garages in apartment buildings? EAxis mentioned that you put them in during their chat sessions months ago, but now I hear that it doesn't count as part of the apt and therefore is not usable (aka it is a commomarea... bleh...)

There is supposed to be one flat premade with cars in it, but so far I have not heard if it works or not. As I do not own AL yet, I can't test it  Sad

I tried out that set of apartments today (Seaspray, I think it's called  Roll Eyes). I placed a car inside the garage with no troubles, but the driveway leading up to the garage was not considered within the apartment's boundaries. The car within the garage worked just fine, though I only tested going to work.

I really like the start-up music, too. One of the more pleasant arrangements of the Sims 2 theme, IMO, which is a good thing if I'm going to be listening to it for who-knows-how-long.

But you know, you can copy a previous EP's splash.package to overwrite it, if you really hate it that much. (Make a backup first, of course.) I had to do that with FT's start-up. I didn't mind it at first, but it got annoying very quickly.

62  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / Re: Apartment Life Borkiness, or how i ended the world in 1 hour. on: 2008 August 29, 21:50:08
Update:  I tried removing all unsupported and/or non-awesome hacks and still cannot see ceilings in live mode.  Roll Eyes
I believe you have to be in cameraman mode to see ceilings. Or, at the very least, have your camera set so that it's below the ceiling line. I haven't tested that second theory, though.

Or maybe you didn't toggle the ceiling button? I missed it at first, too. TrepieDark Trepie posted a picture further up this thread.
63  TS2: Burnination / The War Room / Re: Enabling Build/Buy In Apartments on: 2008 August 29, 21:35:03
Some evidence suggests that evicting and moving sims into and out of an apartment contribute to "Lot ID Creep", where the lot numbers in use continue to grow steadily until they eventually reach 32767, whereupon bad things presumably happen. It is similar to lot ID creep caused by creating and destroying lots, but more insidious.

Wait, what?  How likely is it that someone might actually hit 32767?  I've never heard of "lot ID creep" before, and I'm always putting down empty temporary lots and then deleting them for one reason or another.

I've heard vague references, but never caught an explanation before. Is that 32767 per neighborhood, or per something else?
64  Awesomeware / The Armory / Re: Macro Control: Macrotastics on: 2008 August 29, 17:44:27
I'm getting some errors during Macro-Clean and Macro-Take Out Trash in apartments. My layman's interpretation of the error logs is that it's barfing on the trash chute object. They are using the chute, but the error is popping up. Let me know if you need more info.
65  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / Re: Apartment Life Borkiness, or how i ended the world in 1 hour. on: 2008 August 29, 14:20:15
Roux there are 2 medicine cabinets. One with a mirror and one without, that caught me out initially.

Grumble. That's silly, but then again, they have two varieties of enclosed closets: one with mirror, one without, and only 1 simolean difference in price. Thanks for clarifying. Lemme guess, one's in mirrors, the other's in wall hangings or miscellaneous or somesuch nonsense?
66  TS2: Burnination / The War Room / Re: Enabling Build/Buy In Apartments on: 2008 August 29, 14:12:04
According to the Prima Guide chapter that Snooty posted, lining shared walls with objects is supposed to prevent noise controllers from spawning. But we all know the guides are full of L&P, so I'm playing around with it to see if it works.
67  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / Re: Apartment Life Borkiness, or how i ended the world in 1 hour. on: 2008 August 29, 13:45:42
Noticed a few more bugs. A text error. In this pic, the sim was talking with one of the social group townies named Solveig. The text string has the wrong name.

The new medicine cabinets aren't fully functioning in apartments for me. When used in an apartment, only "brush teeth" and "wash face" are appearing on the menu. In regular residences, all the normal mirror functions were also appearing (practice speech, change appearance, etc.). Anyone else noticing this, or is it just my game?

Also, some nanny weirdness. Nanny prepared meal and placed it on the counter. Then the nanny got in a continuous loop of picking up the platter and serving it. Meanwhile, the sim kid couldn't grab a plate because it hadn't been served, I guess. After several loops, the nanny finally completed the serve interaction and the sim kid was able to grab a plate.
68  TS2: Burnination / The War Room / Re: Enabling Build/Buy In Apartments on: 2008 August 28, 14:23:28
I replied and then immediately deleted, realizing I had confused myself.  Embarrassed  After a double-check, here's what I found:

Vacant lots: Both boolProp aptSubLotSpecificToolsDisabled false and boolProp aptBaseLotSpecificToolsDisabled false had to be entered to open the lot for build/buy changes. They can be typed in any order. Just entering one didn't do anything for me.

Occupied lots: Only boolProp aptSubLotSpecificToolsDisabled false needed to be entered to open up the grid. The BaseLot cheat didn't do anything on its own. You can modify other apartments (though they remain dark) and common areas. Changes stuck even when another family was loaded.
69  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Apartment Life: Obligatory Hate/Love Topic on: 2008 August 28, 12:06:20
"Shadow people" in non playable apartments. Furniture, etc, disappears but you can still the occupants standing idle inside the dark apartment.
pic removed
The shadow man exists for me too on that particular lot in that particular apartment unit.  Didn't notice this on any other apartment lot.

Me, too. I've also played a few other apartment lots and haven't seen it otherwise.
70  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / Re: Apartment Life Borkiness, or how i ended the world in 1 hour. on: 2008 August 28, 11:56:34
Yes, it's incredibly frustrating to not even be able to move a door or a window, or plonk a hot pool down. I was pissed off that I made furnished apartments for my sims to move in to - just renovated some EAxis ones - yet when the sims moved in, only the kitchen and bathroom stuff was left. What's with that? People rent furnished apartments.

The furniture disappearing (except for basic utility items) is by design, and was addressed in that chapter of the Prima Guide that was posted online. It said you should furnish the apartments, because otherwise when you go to visit NPC neighbors there won't be anything in their apartment. What would have been better would be a dialog box asking if you want to rent the apt. furnished or unfurnished, then it sticks or disappears accordingly.

BTW has anyone else noticed there's no pest control?

I think the landlord is supposed to provide pest control services? Try reporting it to him.
71  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / Re: Apartment Life Borkiness, or how i ended the world in 1 hour. on: 2008 August 27, 23:30:12
This was probably intentional laziness, but sims can't run on the spiral staircases. Very annoying, and I'm pretty sure now that they just copied Marvine's animations, cleaned 'em up a bit, and took the afternoon off.

Oh, and someone called it in the bork pool about the ceilings cutting off the top of wallpaper. Narrow trim (or whatever it's called) is not visible when ceilings are visible, and you can only see the bottom part of wide trim. And that nice wallpaper seen in TashaFaun's post? Can't see the upper bits above the curving part.

Doesn't look like they broke the piano, though, for a refreshing change. And at least the ceiling lights line up properly with the ceiling, from what I can tell.

I had weird issues with trying to create a new custom neighborhood (kept crashing after it created the pets) so I deleted my EA Games folder to get a new one, figuring I'd just play Pleasantview for awhile. Except I don't have a Pleasantview. I have all the other ones but the game didn't create a PV. How to get it back?
Does your C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\UserData\Neighborhoods\N001 folder have a -bak on the end of the folder name? If so, remove the -bak. Renaming it is one of the clean custom 'hood tutorial steps. You'll probably need to delete and regenerate your My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2 folder again, though. If that doesn't work, then I dunno.
72  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: What's on YOUR Wish List? on: 2008 August 26, 12:21:33
I have both the latest patch and the fix and they seem to have absolutely no effect on fixing aspirations in my game.  Sad

Interesting... I have p3 and I just had a Romance/Knowledge sim get married: engagement memory is green, marriage memory is red.
73  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: My game exploded and now clones are taking up my genetic possiblities... on: 2008 August 26, 12:15:00
How do I look at it through SimPE?

Here's a tutorial on MTS2. Specifically, it's about editing genetics for NPCs, but the first section covers steps to view DNA in SimPE. Note that for hair/skin/eyes, you will need to translate the DNA codes.
74  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Gameplay: How do YOU keep track of sim lifes? on: 2008 August 26, 00:05:38
1. Sync timer for rotations. Then I use the neighborhood family description to keep track of the current day and upcoming events for each family, so I can quickly see where I need to play without loading a family. I think I saw someone here suggest it a long time ago. The neighborhood family description typically looks like this:

Code:
D59 18:00
Event D60: Morgan ages to teen
Event D61: (Ursula ages to toddler) Thomasina gives birth 13:00

2. Simple text file to log events, sorted by day. Also to record random thoughts I get for future reference or storytelling purposes (e.g., that sim kid should be popularity because she keeps being brought home from school by other kids).
3. Sort & rename pictures every so often so I know when and where they happened.
4. Family trees recorded in Family Echo (thanks to notovny for providing that link some time ago).

It may look like a lot, but it's actually very time-effective. I've tried various genealogy programs, but never cottoned on to them, and I don't like the way it looks in a spreadsheet. Reminds me too much of work, I suppose.  Tongue

Funny, I just noticed that end table thing last night, too.

Anyone else having trouble with the lamps? They provide a little light, but are basically worthless for lighting a room. I noticed this last night while decorating a room with the cubic collection. I'll post a picture later, if I can remember to. Pictures added. (And I do not have any lighting mods in my game, it's Maxis default lighting.)

I know some lamps don't light as well, or light with colored and therefore dimmer lighting, but these just seem wrong.

About the lighting, can you fix it Huh

(Rearranged Kabuto's quote tags for clarity. Smiley) I don't have the first idea of how to fix the lamps, but I'll give it a shot if someone more awesome could point me in the right direction. Havelock? Lord Darcy? Argon? Bueller?
