26  Serious Business / Spore Discussions / I realize this forum is dead and buried....but I'm looking for mods. on: 2010 August 13, 23:57:19
I'm probably committing about sixteen different faux pas, but does anyone know of a mod index that isn't a hyperlink graveyard?

Huh.  Did you guys really spend a page and a half arguing about grammar and correcting grammar?

The fact that it's harder than Sims 2, money is not as easy to come by and skills are not so easily acquired

I actually find it easier than Sims 2.

misplaced age slider?
30  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: Motive bars outdated and restrictive? on: 2009 June 08, 21:33:03
Sure, it's easier to plan ahead using the bars. But perhaps it would be interesting to having to figure out ourselves what to do before work - one way would be by looking which moodlets are missing - instead of having it all dictated by the bars: "HAVE BATH!" "EAT!" "SHIT!". Don't moodlets have a "grace period" between their positive and negative version anyway? Except those like the coffee moodlet expiring while on red energy, of course.

Considering that I'm a highly evolved human being capable of bathing, eating and shitting all in the hour or so before going to work in the morning and after getting a full night's rest of 6-8 hours, I'm not really sure that making a choice between the three in a game is all that compelling.

I use a combination of ignoring the needs bars and cheating.  Maybe I'm just averse to change, but the moodlets seem pretty "meh" to me. I like the wants/fears set up in TS2, it seems truer to life. Plus, it makes it easier to have Sims sink into a deep depression.

Actually, short of micromanaging the action bar, is pretty impossible to have sims sink into a deep depression in TS3.  Even with free will off, they take care of all their needs which pretty much results in a neutral mood state.

32  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: OK, so why would I want this mess? on: 2009 May 30, 13:52:53
I LOVE Bartle and I think maybe you have something here. Sims 2 appealed to a variety of people on the hierarchy, maybe killers a little less than the others. Sims 3 appeals to the achievers most of all I think, maybe a bit to the explorers although once you have collected umteen rocks and seeds, it gets a bit boring. I have taken the quiz in the past and am a socializer, which is probably why I enjoyed Nightlife the best and the lightbolt attractions. The chat nests are very nice but again, its all the same thing. Building a romance is so easy and so predictable compared to Nightlife.
I don't really think the Bartle typology really applies to the Sims as a single player game, necessarily. I mean, I'm a Killer. This probably comes as no surprise. However, the Sims is simply not where I choose to explore my Killer nature. It's single player. There's no one to kill!

Fight Club
Zombie Apocalypse

There's some bleed through of that thar killar nature.  Tongue
33  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: THE HORROR: The REAL TS3 Scoop As It Unfolds on: 2009 May 29, 18:15:59
Yes, I've commented on the ridiculously high clog chance, etc.

I think they can be upgraded to unbreakable with handiness, though. And not sure if cheaper plumbing = more break.

If you get the plumber challenge for the handiness skill, then it automatically makes any plumbing object unbreakable the next time you repair it.  Then you can (I think) also upgrade it to self-cleaning and never have to deal with it again.
34  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: OK, so why would I want this mess? on: 2009 May 29, 18:13:52

Gee, and I thought one of the selling points of Sims 3 was that meeting needs was boring and the Sims would spend less time on them.   Roll Eyes

Well, they got rid of comfort and environment and turned those into moodlets (which moodlets are fantastic)...so that's two gone...then you can get happiness rewards that make you only need to shower once every three days or so and one that makes you only need to eat once every two days...and then the super-overpowered one (which is also the cheapest of the need-altering rewards) that completely removes the bladder need.
35  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: OK, so why would I want this mess? on: 2009 May 29, 18:09:34
I have to say that I utterly hate TS3. There is a lot about it that makes it like a crappier copy of Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing, and if I want to play those, I will play them. I hate the way it looks, for the most part, I find it clunky and horrible to play, especially the mechanics of getting a sim promoted. What do you do while the sim is in the rabbit hole for all that time, when speed 3 crawls by? How fun is a game if I need another activity to keep me amused while it enforces complete lack of activity for long periods of time? If I didn't cheat energy up, my sim would spend 60% of each day in activities (sleep, work) I can only observe.

Well, the work thing doesn't bother me because both TS1 and TS2 had your sim disappear for work and now you can actually accomplish stuff at some jobs (extra cash, skilling, etc).  Plus, I love the fact that once you top the career, you can keep getting raises.

But I have noticed that needs are huge pain in the ass and some activities take way, way, waaaaaay, too long. Working out for 10 hours?  Really??  And even with the highest bed, my sim gets tired after 6-8 hours of being awake.
36  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: OK, so why would I want this mess? on: 2009 May 29, 17:59:46
People keep saying that, but in your game did no family every have more than one child that grew up.  I take it you just moved out surplus kids and deleted them?  No one got divorced or broke up?  If they did, again, the Sim who left was just bit-garbage?  I'm sorry, but I can't imagine deciding to play only two Sims for the life of the game.  It would get so fucking boring.....

I followed the generations.  So, for instance, when the child grew up and went to college, I followed.  When they came back, I moved them to a new lot and kept playing them...so eventually, six generations of a family were all "adults" and no one ever aged past it because it was too much of a pain to switch to another house just to age them to elders or have them die or whatever.  And if there was more than one child, I just picked my favorite and followed them.  So I'd end up with teenage great uncles/aunts.

37  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: OK, so why would I want this mess? on: 2009 May 29, 17:50:02
Honestly, I mostly like the new gameplay mechanics.  Of course, I only ever play one family at a time anyway.  I like that the neighborhood ages with me now.

As far as relationships...yeah, they're absurdly easy, but no more so than macro/socialize.  TBH, I don't find it that different from TS2 relationships.  The lack of a lifetime relationship meter is kinda meh, but since that meter was redundant anyway, it's not that big a deal.

Now, that's not saying that the game is great.  It's not.  But I do prefer the gameplay of this one over the TS2 gameplay for the most part.  I just wish it wasn't so...limited.  It's missing too many features and obviously so for EA to regurgitate expansions.  And that seriously grates on my nerves.

So I guess what I'm saying is "It's not bad. It's not great.  It's also not TS2."  Overall, I think it has potential.  Unfortunately a finished game that only has potential isn't really a finished game, IMO.  But considering the state of the majority of the gaming industry and how unfinished products are becoming a norm...I haven't encountered any major bugs in TS3, but it's blatantly obvious that things like genetics are either "not as intended" or "we didn't care enough to do it right".

[edit] Ugh at the grammatical errors..that'll teach me to type when I'm weak from stupidly skipping meals to read a book. Tongue  I think I got them all.
38  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: Career Profitability and Perks on: 2009 May 28, 17:43:26
A little perk of the science career: Once my sim reached Mad Scientist, he was able to "Perform Experiment" on nearly every object in the house. It would give objects either a positive or negative effect. Sounds objects became noisy, pretty, or give random good moodlets to sims who used them. Luckily, if you get a bad experiment, you can undo it just as quickly.

That's...actually kind of awesome.
39  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: THE HORROR: The REAL TS3 Scoop As It Unfolds on: 2009 May 23, 03:49:56
Oh no, I know how to throw parties at public places(I already threw 2). I just don't know how to decorate that public place for the party, you know, like balloons, a table to put the cake on, etc... A warning always comes up a hour before the party saying I should set up. That's what I don't get. Or maybe I am just reading too much into it.
Also, the parties in Sim 3 seem to be easier to make great compared to the Sims 2.

I just carried a guitar and then played for tips throughout the party. Tongue
40  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: THE HORROR: The REAL TS3 Scoop As It Unfolds on: 2009 May 22, 05:24:38
Personally, I am pro-rabbit-hole. All the rabbit holes are things that either we never had in TS2 to begin with, or are things so utterly boring that we made hacks just to avoid having to do it. See: Grocery shopping, buying crap, etc. All these things in TS3 have been turned into rabbit holes, because, frankly, we never actually liked doing those things to begin with!

Although I do miss being able to run my own store/restaurant/whathaveyou rather than being an otherwise uninvolved "partner".
41  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: THE HORROR: The REAL TS3 Scoop As It Unfolds on: 2009 May 21, 20:06:10
Is it just me or is the ultra speed mostly just useless? It always shuts off on me and doesn't tend to go much faster than speed 3 for the brief periods in which it actually stays selected.

It's not faster than 3.  It's just temporary speed 3. It only stays active for the current action then reverts to previous speed.

The game explains these things quite clearly.
42  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: THE HORROR: The REAL TS3 Scoop As It Unfolds on: 2009 May 21, 19:54:06
I have been playing for a day and this game is AWFUL!

What has EA done to The Sims?

It's not awful.  It's just not good.

It has loads of potential...but in typical EAxis fashion, the potential is just that...potential.  They had some good ideas but didn't bother to flesh any of them out beyond the basic implementation.  So you end up with a lot of things you can do, but not enough gravity in doing them.

Overall, I'd say it's not worth switching from TS2 since you lose far too much.  I'll wait till they've made a few dozen EPs, then I'll buy the TS3 Super-Ultra-Deluxe from the bargain bin.  Maybe it'll be worth playing by then. Tongue

43  Serious Business / Spore Discussions / Re: Galactic Adventures EP - new sneak peak video on: 2009 February 04, 16:29:51
My biggest problem with this EP is that it seems to be all pre-programmed and self-contained mission events.  I would much rather see an integrated system where things happen as a result of other circumstances.

Of course what I want is probably not possible in this game anyway, but the space stage should have some heavy galactic RTS going on.  I'm still mad that I can't build fleets.
44  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: happy holiday stuff on: 2008 November 17, 14:28:00
What the hell is this "buying" you speak of?

It's this fad where you trade number values for physical values.

I really don't see it lasting very long as it's very inconsistent.
45  Serious Business / Spore Discussions / Re: L&P Spore (expansion) announced on: 2008 November 15, 03:42:21
Now here are some words I never thought I'd say together in any imaginable context but 'in EA's defense' (WTFness), this game has been in development for 11 years, a lot of the stuff Maxis had planned to put into EP's is already complete or near completion. In that respect there's little or no advantage to holding back complete packs for any great length of time. I understand that the whole project ran massively over budget (not surprising being 3 years late), in that respect I can understand EA's keenness to claw back some of their investment early to help bolster their legal departments budget for dealing with the many class action lawsuits they are and will be facing over their illegal security protection.

How is that a defense?  Removing or withholding content from the base game so you can sell it seperately is not a defense.
46  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Second AL patch is out. on: 2008 October 27, 15:40:55
Sims, alas, don't have enough character attributes to really define differentiation. One approach I've used is to check the macro-network for basic motives, and if all basics are filled, allow the EAxis AI to pick something at random.

This sounds ideal.  I hate having my sims sit around like lumps on power idle, but only slightly less than I hate them constantly committing motive-suicide.  I like seeing my sims live out their lives and do their own thing...I just don't like that their own thing involves ignoring their needs.

Yes, I just said the same thing twice.

NONONO!!!  I want penguin woohoo!!!!!

The final step in your re-enactment of Billy Madison?
48  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Second AL patch is out. on: 2008 October 23, 18:17:27
Want to make an enemy of one to see if they screw you over too Smiley

They do. I had a sim demoted just because he kicked the shit out of one of them twice.
Losers Sad

The problem being that you don't know who their connections are until after you've reached the friend/enemy point.  Typical EA backwardsness.  If I knew he was my boss's best friend, I'd probably be nice no matter how much of an ass he was.

Plus, let some asshole demote me for unrelated off work activities just because he knows a guy.  Hello lawsuit!

Where's our sim lawyers dammit!

Social Groups now generate significantly less NPCs

What on earth does that mean?  What is a social group?

Sims that dress alike and have a special greeting (that anyone can use at any time)...

In other words...No one knows.  They're pointless, they're practically invisible and you can't join one.
50  Awesomeware / The Armory / Re: Apartment Hack: Now For Non-Fat Gwilly People! on: 2008 October 22, 20:09:13
Will this make landlords any less stupid?  I can't stand the pizza parties of fail, and the landlord randomly getting stuck in apartments.  If he can't be lobotomised, I'd rather stomp the parties entirely.

Nothing kills a date like bring her home to the hottub and finding the landlord already there...naked.
