I recall having a bookcase in one of my businesses, and it could never be restocked -- but it disappeared one day, and the 'out of stock' sign appeared in its place. I don't think you could ever restock them -- you just sell books until its empty, then put a new bookcase in its place.

Note that something similar happens with invited friends when they arrive: you can't greet them until they've rung the bell, you can only tell them to go away -- I seem to remember this wasn't the case before AL, but see above, I may be misremembering.
No, I think this started with AL -- probably has something to do with apartments. If you live on the top floor, unless you run down you'd probably pass your friend on the stairs going up. Better to just wait for the friend to ring the bell.

I have a HD 3850 and don't have the problem. There's many cases where new drivers break things that were fine in earlier versions -- ask anyone with an nVidea card about that. It's possible ATI broke something again. You can download older driver versions from the ATI website, so download the 8.10 drivers, uninstall the 8.12, install the 8.10 and see if that fixes it. If so, great! If not, there's another issue going on.

You can tell by what disk you need to start the program. FFS and GLS were based on the OFB engine, so if you only had NL, you had to start from the SP disk, and thus needed the OFB versions of the hacks/mods. However, if you had a later game (say Pets or Seasons), you'd start from that disk, and thus need the appropriate hacks for that EP.
M&G is unique in that it came out as an SP after AL (which is in theory the last EP), but doesn't use AL to start -- you have to run from the M&G disk. And its based on the AL engine. And yes, there were numerous threads on this issue in the Podium and RetardoLand after M&G came out. You would have found them after a quick site search.
As for patches, no -- they're specific to the EP or SP. If you don't have AL, you don't install the AL patch (it won't install anyway if you try). If and when an M&G patch comes out, you'd install that.

I had that problem with a version of the ATI drivers a couple of months back -- I think it was the 8.3 or 8.4 drivers. It only happened on lots with a LOT of vertical stuff, like too many trees, or a fence around the entire lot. Reducing the trees or fence resolved it. I'm currently running the 8.10 drivers, and don't have the problem, so maybe it returned in the latest version?
