826  TS2: Burnination / Taster's Choice / Re: Recolors for Toilet Paper in Bathroom Uses You on: 2005 December 26, 16:53:23
I'll probably be exposing my abysmal ignorance for all to see and point fingers at but here goes.

Is this a recolor of Crammyboy's new low poly mesh?  And if not, would you have to start your recolors over?
827  TS2: Burnination / Peasantry / Re: Tutorial: How to Check Polygon Counts of Objects on: 2005 December 26, 16:40:02
Oops haven't checked on this thread for a bit.

No, the object wasn't a painting, but a baby mobile.  After reading your most excellent tutorial and UNDERSTANDING finally what it's all about, just looking at the object was enough to suspect it had a high poly count.

I checked it and lo and behold I was more right that I thought.  It was part of  really pretty nursery set over at TSR.  But almost every one one of her meshes was high poly, although the mobile was the worst.  The second worst was a baby bath. I had to get rid of rid of half of her meshes, which was a shame, as it was a nice set. To be fair, I think this was done in the early days when new meshes started coming out, so she wasn't probably aware of the problem.  I notice that some of the creators at TSR are listing their poly count, and even warning people to consider the fact their object is high poly.

Addendum:  Is there anyway to find out how high poly Maxis Objects are?  I know some of them are high'ish.  I most especially suspect the blinds. It matters to us poor people afflicted with a sucky video card

PS.  Crammyboy does rock.

828  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Tool for finding duplicated files on: 2005 December 25, 04:40:11
I found this tool that's great for finding duplicated files.  It not only shows you duplicate file names, but also will show you duplicate files with disimilar names.  It's awesome for finding those files with the long alpha-numerical files names.

In one case it flagged 2 files, a floor and a clothing, as identical.  I though surely it was a mistake, but no.  The program found them because they were empty files, thus identical.

Turns out I had nearly 1000 duplicate files in my download folders.  Not a bad cleanup!

The program is called noclone and I found it on www.tucows.com  But it's avalaible elsewhere as well.  It's shareware
829  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Anyone test the new character file limit (post NL) ? on: 2005 December 23, 22:47:49
When I was a little girl, I remember spending endless hours setting up "houses" for my barbies.  I didn't have store bought one, but I would set up elaborate sets (as in theater sets) for them with whatever I could find.  Bed made of Kleenex boxes, bed sheets from hand towels, ect..  Then soon as I was done and started playing with the barbies, I'd get bored and stop.  It was the setting up I enjoyed.

I find I'm the same with the Sims.  I spend endless hours downloading stuff, creating sims, building houses, ect... setting things up. I've been setting up neibourhood after neighbourhood.  But the playing bores me quickly.  Weird how you don't change
830  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Headmaster just doesn't want to have fun anymore! on: 2005 December 23, 02:09:02
I kinda like it when he gets in the hot tub.  You get extra points!.  The way I manage it, is I never leave the Headmaster alone 2 seconds after he shows up, to avoid him getting distracted by something shiny.  I get someone to meet him at the door and just queue up a bunch of chats action to keep him occupied.  You don't need a whole lot of rooms to make him happy, although that helps. I've once succesfully got the Broke family into private school with just a spaguetti dinner, a tour and lots of chatting.
831  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Lots not showing up in lot bin on: 2005 December 22, 19:21:18
Hmmmmmm,

Try moving the content of the teleport folder elsewhere as well, just in case. That's the folder that contains houses to be imported.  Might be something that is sitting in there that is causing the problem..

try my technique.  Try extracting the package file with multipacksim2extractor (or something like that) into a folder..  Move the entire folder to your download folder.  Open the package file with clean  installer and uncheck everything except for the lot.  Save this under a new name.   Try installing your new file.
832  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Neighborhood corruption on: 2005 December 22, 16:08:33

What I would do in your case is use SimsPE to export the appearance of your sims, using sim surgery in order to recreate your family.  That does involve CAS, which is a problem for you. It sounds to me like you might have a corrupted file that is causing your game to crash when you try to use a pre-existing male sim.  To test this theory, move your download folder to your desktop and try loading up CAS again and see if it crashes. ( DON'T load any lot without your download folder though).  If it's fine you'll have to identify the file that is the problem.  Load up clean installer and take a peek at your files.  Character files are usually one of those long file names, and don't have a category in Clean Installer..  Hopefully you wont have a gazillion of those, because the only way to be sure that they are indeed character files, is to open them one by one with SimsPE.

Ok now if your CAS does STILL crash with the download folder temporarily absent, you can also move the content of the savedsims folder somewhere else on your computer.  That contains the sims you have created with BodyShop.  That's a simpler problem, because there is nothing of real importance in that folder, except your custom template sims.

Anyway, this is getting long-winded.  The idea is that you need to load up CAS in order to recreate your family. If for some reason you simply can't use your existing game  to do so, you can always try it with a fresh copy of the Sims (by loading the Sims under a new user in XP for example) and using the exported file from Sim Surgery, recreate the family.  In SimsPE you can adjust the attributes to match the ones of your previous sims.  Then you can package your family for export into your game.
833  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Lots not showing up in lot bin on: 2005 December 22, 15:08:34
Have you tried installing them with the Cleaninstaller?
834  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: MATYhood and the big fiery ball from space on: 2005 December 21, 15:11:46
I think that at the very minimum, all the families being sent to you and incorporated into the hood needs to be checked with clean installer.  You should be able to determine if any hacks hitched a ride.  Also check out the character files included in the file.  You should only have the characters files that corresponds to the family.  If you get extra files, they correspond to the sims they have interacted with and these will end up as stub files, I believe.  This is what you want to avoid.

Also, while neighbourhoods are separate and can't impact other neighbourhoods, the same cannot be said of the custom content in the download folder, as all neigbourhood share that.

You probably know all this, but better too much info rather than not enough Smiley

Oh what is this scary bug you are talked about Cwykes?
835  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: What is your aspiration? on: 2005 December 20, 22:11:58
Sorry I forgot the cheese.  I thought the question was cheesy enough on it's own Smiley

Actually I don't get this whole cheese aspiration, it sounds like an inside joke?  Maybe one day someone will explain it to me Smiley
836  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: What is your aspiration? on: 2005 December 20, 20:17:09
So in other words, I'm kind of a loser.. Heh.

Bah, you're not a loser.  The world needs people like you otherwise the world would be filled only with politicians Smiley

My definition of a pleasure aspiration is not so much someone who is into drugs, parties, booze and the like.  Rather it's someone who likes to indulge doing what they like, whatever that may be, often at the detriment of what they should be doing.  Now that's me Smiley  Right now my "drug" of choice is simming
837  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / What is your aspiration? on: 2005 December 20, 19:46:38
I'm willing to bet that pleasure will rank right up there, otherwise you'd be out there making babies, friends, dates money, or reading a book ... not indulging your sims habbit Smiley
838  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Quest. about a hack conflict on: 2005 December 20, 19:07:50
Since it's been a long hiatus,  might it not be quicker to simply remove all your hacks and start over?  That's what I did when I came back from a long absence.  I just downloaded Pescado's hacks from the NL folder and addeded whichever other hacks I wanted.  This way I did not miss some kind of update or end up with an NL incompatible hack
839  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Sims made in Bodyshop... saved where? on: 2005 December 20, 02:06:47
I believe that only the sims you create in Bodyshop will be in the savedsims folder. However packaged sims that you install from the exchange or anywhere else will end up in your download folder as one of those lovely meaningless long file name.  If you look at them with Clean Installer they will have no type.  You'll have to open them with SimPE to be sure it's a character file, though there aren't many files that the Clean Installer does not correctly identify, so they are most likely character files.

BTW, MultiSims2PackExtractor is your friend.  Whenever I want to check out a Sim I downloaded, I'll create a folder named after the sim and extract the package file to it.  If I decide I don't like the sims, I can delete the whole folder.  If I decide to keep the sim, , I'll move all the bits and pieces of clothing, makeup, ect that I want to their proper folder.  This also helps eliminate duplicate files, as they are quite a few popular creators whose stuff is used over and over again.

Maybe if you got more exercise, you wouldn't be such a wuss. Also, drink fish oil. Drink lots of fish oil.

Fish oil is disgusting!  Even my cat would turn his pedigree nose up at it!

Hey Pescado was actually giving you good advice.  Fish oil is known to reduce inflammation, and arthritis is an inflammatory disease.  Inflammation is also associated with a whole host of diseases including heart disease, so it's good for more than just your joints.  There can't be enough good said about fish oil. (Do a search for arthritis and fish oil you'll see)

You'd need large doses for it to be effective.  You also need pharmaceutical grade stuff, not the capsules you can buy at the pharmacy.  That can be loaded with contaminants and is often rancid to boot.   The good stuff needs to be kept refrigerated and has a very short shelf life.  The good news however is that it's not your mother's cod liver oil.  It doesn't taste fishy at all.  You can even get it in a peach or lemon flavor.  Of course Pescado will probably say that's for wusses Cheesy

Huh, sorry for the tangent.  Try to fiddle with your monitor's settings.  There might be a reset button.  Also try the degauss if you have one.  Hitting it also works, but that's usually for fixing that high pitch whine Cheesy  I'd have to agree with everyone that your monitor might be on it's last err tube.

841  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: How to make Sims have nightmares? on: 2005 December 16, 21:32:13
Am I the only one whose sims don't have bladder accidents?

Nope.  I'm a good sim mommy.  My sims are always happy go lucky, with full stomachs and empty bladders and sweet smelling arm pits.  Even my toddlers rarely have accidents.  The only thing is that sometimes with all that peeing, eating and washing, they tend to get cranky about being bored.

Thanks again for this tutorial.  Now that I understand what a vertice is, I can be on the look out for potentially high poly objects.

Is this the kind of objects you warned us away from ?

843  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Will this method of deleting sims work on: 2005 December 13, 02:36:36
Thanks, I'll be careful.

The dormies are not an issue as they have been snuffed out by the convienent and expedious means of a deleteallchars.

Should I also remove the names of my sacrificial lambs from the families or does that matter
844  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Will this method of deleting sims work on: 2005 December 13, 01:52:42
I just attached a Downtown to my neighbourhood and I want to prune it before the evil hordes of downtownies contaminate my neighbourhood.  I especially want to get rid of the children.  The method I was thinking of using to get rid of them was 1) make sure they have no memories, locate their character file, delete in SimPe and then delete the file.

Will this produce a clean deletion, or will it cause problems down the line?
845  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: OT - You know you're an internet geek when.... on: 2005 December 12, 18:05:35
I'll join the club.  I met my boyfriend online, though I'm not sure it counts as it was through an Online Dating Service.  It's secret though, as our official story is that "we met in a bar".  It's technically true, since that's where our first date took place.

I do all my banking online and find it a huge inconvenience when I have to write a cheque.  In fact, I usually have to turn the house upside them looking for them!

I just can't imagine a time when the internet wasn't there to provide you with all the answers --- many hundreds of conflicting ones Smiley

847  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Homes? Where do you download them? on: 2005 December 09, 17:15:38
Oh man you guys are gonna send me on yet another downloading spree.  I swear that you won't find anyone worse than me.  I started playing TS2 after a 6 months hiatus, a little more than a month ago and, and believe it or not, I must have played the game for 2-3 hours in total.  The rest of my time has been spent downloading, organizing, creating sim families, downloading and organizing.  Every night I go home with the firm intention of playing and get distracted by something I see on a website and download some more.  The other night, my internet connection was hosed.  You'd figure, hey maybe I would actually play for a change ... but Nooooo... I did some organizing, got frustrated about having no net and spent an hour with tech support fixing it.  Then downloaded some more.

I think I need professional help.

Oh and back on topic .... I spent the entire evening last night (when I was supposed to be playing of course) , downloading and organizing houses from CycloneSue on TSR.  Her houses really rocks http://www.sims2.thesimsresource.com/profiles/view.php?mid=784901

PS Reg, your mad scientist house is amazing.  I am downloading it now.  (is anyone suprised?)
848  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: This is the pits on: 2005 December 08, 02:36:23
I've had that happen to me as well.  I created a house with a basement but left out the stairs.  I figured I'd store things there, out of reach of my sims.  Well on several occasion I found my sims in the basement.  Finally I gave in and put in some stairs.

What I would suggest is you use some of the hacks that you can find here that eliminates the sims from whining along with the route-no-fail hack.  So when they want something and can't have it, they just stand there for a few minutes, and then wander away.  Much more peaceful than the incessant whining and foot stomping.  Very indignified! This way you can store your musical instruments behind a locked door (another hack) or simply in the attic.   Also, if you prefer to go hackless, I have heard that Sims will not "see" any object behind a dorm door that is not keyed to them, although I have not tried this tactic.

Fantastic tutorial!  Thank you so much.  Sometimes tutorial give me headaches, they are so complicated, so I put them aside for later.  But yours was awesome, simple but not simplistic (to me anyway), yet very informative.

I suggest you name your tutorial Understanding Polygon counts for peasants

Okay now, I want more How-to for peasants: Re-categorizing hair, Fixing DNA after a Sim Surgery, Creating skin replacement... .. after supper of course

 just kidding Grin

rushes off to download Datgen

edit : Interesting, I discovered that CBOY err "enhancement package" was flagged moderate being over budget by 8.5.  I'm not quite sure what the budget is in this case considering Maxis 's males lack of hmm features but anyway.

I checked with SimsPE to get a clearer picture, and discovered with your easy-to-follow instructions that the polygon count for each state was actually quite low.  The higest I saw was around 500.    So I guess you have to use DatGen as a guideline only.

Sorry for being waaaaaay off topic

850  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: "House of Fallen Trees" crashes my game on: 2005 December 07, 19:44:56
I know this is rather off topic but how can you check if an object is high polygon in SimsPE?
