251  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: The Sims 2: Holiday Edition and Happy Holiday Stuff on: 2007 June 20, 06:27:23
The Holiday pack is the most confusing SP of them all, as there have been four versions of it released:

Holiday/Christmas Party Pack (2005), Holiday/Christmas Edition (2005), Happy Holiday Stuff/Festive HS (2006), Holiday Edition (2006)

The 2005 Holiday Edition includes the Holiday/Christmas Party Pack and the base game, while the 2006 Holiday Edition contains HHS/FHS and the base game. HHS/FHS has all the HPP/CPP content as well as some extra outfits, so if you have HPP/CPP than outfits meant to work with HHS/FHS may not work depending on which mesh they are based on.

huh?!

Yeah, exactly.  That's how the bastards got me.  I obviously already had the base game, and I had a gift certificate to the game store, so I grabbed the newest sims release (obviously).  When I was paying I felt like the price seemed high for a stuff pack, but who cares it's a gift card!  I didn't realize that I'd purchased not only the stuff pack but a second version of the base game until I'd come home, ripped off the wrapping, and installed the game (which by the way never mentioned to me "Hey!  You already have one of these in here, you knew that, right?).  That was fun.  And now I'm stuck with it because in my shock and horror I knocked the case on the ground and stepped on it trying to find where it had landed.  (yes, I am a clutz)

Hey, thanks a lot ElfPuddle!  (Not sarcastic)  I knew my instructions were missing something... PICTURES!  Hehe... (I seriously thought about it, but decided to wait until Invisigoth replied and if they didn't understand then, I was going to... thanks for jumping the gun!)

Glad you got it Invisigoth!  Now go, and learneth thy Windows.  Wink

Wanna tutor me?  Wink
253  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: New Computer ... need advice, ASAP. on: 2007 June 18, 08:04:13
Monitors are dirt cheap anymore anyway.  I got a professional grade Viewsonic 21" CRT for $500 delivered.  But there should be plenty of used monitors around if you know where to look.

Invisigoth, I followed the link in your signature.  The full quote is even more interesting:

Quote
We [at EA] want to avoid making 'pink games.' Women enjoy many of the same features in gameplay as men do. The way EA sees it is there's a lot of untapped potential out there."

This seems a bit higher than a T rating would suggest. Cheesy

Hook

Yeah, I'm 22 and trying to get through college.  500$ is well out of my price range, actually 50$ is well out of my price range.  Free is just about right.  Wink

And I took that part of the quote because I thought it was kind of a funny dumb thing to say.  But I am glad that you enjoyed it.  Although I am not really sure what you're driving at with the T rating thing.  That might be because it's 4 AM my time and I should definitely be in bed.
254  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: New Computer ... need advice, ASAP. on: 2007 June 18, 04:47:01
I am not very awesome, either, but there are two things that I do know.  The first is that you will probably want 2 gigs of ram, because (at least for the next few years) that will be able to run just about whatever you need it to.  Second, I am not sure what the laws are like in Canada, but in the US it can be very expensive to get rid of an old monitor (it's considered hazardous waste), so I usually find my new monitors from www.craigslist.org.  People will sell used (but still very good condition) monitors for dirt, or often give them away for free if you are willing to go pick it up.  You can even get nice flat screen ones, particularly from companies who have recently upgraded and are trying to get rid of a bunch of them.  I looked on the site, and they have subsites for about a dozen areas in Canada, so it might be worth a try.  I haven't payed for a monitor in years.  They can be so expensive, so that might give you a helpful chunk more to use towards the actual machine.

Thank you all SO much!   Grin  I am not even remotely windows savvy, but you guys were able to explain it clearly enough for even ME to figure it out!  (the really sad thing is that I can write programs with no problem, and I was able to figure out simsPE to the point of being fairly comfortable without a tuturial, but I still don't understand my operating system *at all*.  I routinely forget where to find my registry, or how to change my start up processess.  I like to pretend that it's windows' fault and not mine).
256  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / Re: userStartup.cheat is why I suck at life on: 2007 June 17, 20:32:45
Venusy, is this in the FAQ yet? It should be.

The most common error is having an accidental .txt after the .cheat. What does yours end with?

It ends in .cheat, but it still says underneath it Text Document.  Ok, I'm a really visual person so here:

Does that mean that it really ends in txt because it says text document?  If so, how do I fix this?
257  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / userStartup.cheat is why I suck at life (SOLVED) on: 2007 June 17, 19:42:06
Ok, so I googled this a few days ago because I wanted a userStartup.cheat file of my very own.  I found several helpful tutorials that all agreed on the basic how to.  So I followed them.  And it doesn't work.  I don't know what I am doing wrong.  So, I have userStartup.cheat in my config file in this directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Config
Just to try it out I started with the two lines that I was most sick of typing every time I played:
boolProp testingCheatsEnabled true
intProp maxNumOfVisitingSims 10

What did I do wrong?  I played around with this endlessly, putting the strings in quotes (back to my fun programming days in college, some of the programs liked to be finicky about strings being in quotes), changing capitilization, nothing works.  ::cries::
258  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Game crashes after failed attempt to patch on: 2007 June 14, 06:51:45
You need to complete the patching process.

Replace objects.package with a fresh copy from the CD.

If you don't mind, I have a few dumb questions on the objects.package topic.  I have mine set to read-only, do I still need to replace it every so often?  When I do replace it, all I have to do is copy and paste from the objects.package in the CD into the appropriate EP folder and delete the old one, correct?  Is there anything else I need to know about when replacing it is a good idea?  Also, should I delete objects.package from previous EP folders so that I don't have like, 15 of them (they are all set to read-only already) or would that make my computer 'splode?
I know that these are really basic questions, but after TONS of searching on the site I couldn't find very much info on this topic. As a side thought, the answers to these questions might find a good home in the FAQ...
Sorry for thread hijacking.
259  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Second Seasons Patch is out.... on: 2007 June 14, 06:17:05
Lightning has always only had a 1% chance of actually inflicting an instakill on hit. Otherwise it will kill by motive depletion, as it applies -50 hunger per strike. It also happens to inflict -150 bladder, so your sim will almost assuredly piss itself.

Right, that's my point.  Lighting is a very funny way to torment bad sims, but its not nearly deadly enough!  I demand accidental death!
Even when I did the hostel challenege I only wound up with two dead sims, after two seperate groups of 8 went through the same house.  Two died in the first group, and the second group wound up with two of the sims getting pregnant and surviving to labor (at which point I obviously had to intervene to name the babies as they were born, but did nothing else to help them).  The closest I've come to an accidental death (other than the hostel, obviously) in the last year was when a pregnant sim caught fire making crepes suzette.  Unfortunately, I had a smoke detector so she lived; no zombie baby for me  Sad
260  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Second Seasons Patch is out.... on: 2007 June 14, 05:48:06
You all might attack me for this, but long, long ago I beta tested for Maxis, for TSO.  ::hides::  Although, I did mention to them that they were basically just setting up a giant pointless brothel.

Warning, more of my excessive opinions ahead!

Maybe I'm dense, but I just don't see much point in patching anymore.  MATY hacks are working just fine, and they allow me the flexibility to pick and choose which things I want patched.  For example, how incompetant must you be to have problems with your sims getting squitted too easily from lightning?  I've almost never seen an accidental death PERIOD and never from lightning.  Just for fun, before I made my clean 'hood, I rounded up the classic Maxis townies I hated and killed them.  It took FOUR smite actions from the lot debugger to kill Goopy.  And then he ended up starving to death, so I got an annoying starvation ghost instead of a cool electrocution ghost.  Not that I really cared, I only played that 'hood for another day before the sim apocolypse happened and a new clean hood rose anew.

Although I have also been lucky, and while I have experienced some of the crying baby issues, it's only been occasional (mostly with babies with high outgoing), so it's actually kind of spiced things up for me.  I don't use a controllable baby hack, but I kind of intuited that a new born baby will probably need a few things straight off the bat; some love and affection, some food, and a bath.  Then they probably want to sleep from all that exausting being born stuff.  I also haven't had the education career problems, and if I do experience them, well, it's not like money is really hard to get in this game anyway.  But for a majority of the things on the "fix" list, JM already has a fix that we KNOW works.  The rest, eh...don't we all complain enough that we don't get enough random consequences for our little simmies actions?

The only thing that really tempts me is having a teen start college from home, but with rampage I don't need to pay attention to the boring parts, and I can just focus on the friend/potential mate meeting and befriending part.  Plus with ACR uni is hysterical now.  Wink
261  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Create More UNI based Sims? on: 2007 June 12, 19:43:12
I've made custom sims in YACAS many times and added them to the townie bin with the teleporter shrub, and that at least works perfectly fine.
I think also the townie tree is smart enoug to understand that any adults generated on a uni lot is a YA.

Because Maxis always writes smart code.
262  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: If I were to kill all the townies... on: 2007 June 11, 04:58:37
I was so sick of my billions of ugly, horrible, annoying townies, so I used Jordi's unbelievably amazing tutorial:

http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php?PHPSESSID=2e6c484c75aa0a6de1e7fbb0a27191ca&topic=5861.0

It should link you to all of the necessary info as you read through it, but if you still need some help PM me, I didn't do this too long ago so it's all still pretty fresh in my mind.  There's a link in there to clean templates for Maxis created 'hoods including Pleasantview, so you can keep the buildings but be rid of the icky townies.  I also highly recommend picking out a new set of face templates (it will tell you how to do that in Jordi's tutorial as well), and of course put in the new templates BEFORE you spawn new townies or they won't use the new templates.  I ended up with 44 total NPCs in my base 'hood, which is a pretty big drop from the 300 I was sporting before.  When you put in subhoods that number will rise.
With the new faces they're all normal looking enough to be potential mates for my playables!  Others have already mentioned rerandomizing before spawning new townies, and that applies to this method as well.  I wound up with townies that were all significantly different from the ones I was used to playing with (no more ugly guys named Goopy wearing kilts!)
263  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: Jun "More Awful Than You": Stupidass Houses! on: 2007 June 04, 06:28:56
What's with the incredibly tiny closet off of the master bedroom in the cock house?  It's not big enough for career rewards, and I doubt most dressers would fit in there.  They could have easily not added the extra wall and just had a larger master bed, or they could have used it to give more space around the dining table so that it is no longer a deathtrap (three chairs against a wall = someone's gonna get stuck.  Although it could be fun to invite Goopy over to eat, and then have my playables sit in the two blocking chairs until he wets himself and dies.)
264  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Help, one of my sims isn't aging on: 2007 June 04, 05:27:13
I use TJ's crystal ball instead of the gypsy.  Gives you a choice of sims to pick, and can be configured to ignore specific age groups, committed status, gender preferences, townies, npcs or playables.  Actually, I use it more to find people that my sims will make friends with easily.  But also to find spouses.  Combined with ACR it makes the game interesting further down the track, when they meet their two- or three-bolt best friends on community lots Wink

I use TJ's visitor controller (original version here, new beta version here) to stop the pets appearing on community lots in the neighbourhoods where I have strays.  Since I also use clean templates from the Peasanty section of the board, most of my neighbourhoods don't have strays anyway.

Thank you thank you thank you!!  I'm already using ACR and I am enjoying the terrible situations it can create for some of my sims.  I always make sibs go to college all together, so I had an older sister, her boyfriend, and her twin younger sisters.  The twins were romance/knowledge.  The romance sim was constantly picking up random visitors and taking them to bed with her, but at least she left the boyfriend alone.  The KNOWLEDGE sim was the bad one!  If I didn't watch her every minute she would try to kiss or flirt with him!  Lucky for her she never did it while the sister was in the room.  That usually would have just amused me, but I want this sim to become an old spinster, possibly with an alien child.  But then I found macrotastics and made sure that she was in power idle anytime I wasn't paying attention to her.  Wow, I kind of got off the point there...
265  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Help, one of my sims isn't aging on: 2007 June 04, 03:45:21
Drivers wear the ugly brown jumpsuits, and cannot be interacted with. Occasionally they walk by downtown, or get gypsy- or well-summoned apparently.
They're the Sims driving the taxis and carpools.

I guess that I've been lucky, none of my sims have ever seen a driver.  I rarely use the gypsy because I am sort of a control freak about which sims I allow my sims to get intimate with (plus, I get angry when my knowledge sim's turn ons are vamps and blondes and instead of getting the contessa I get Meadow Thayer...And I had to pay 4600 simoleans for a sim that walks by all of my houses like 30 times a day...woo).  Even my romance sims mostly just find their woohoo-buddies from the walk by parade.  And my community lots seem to be cursed by sadorandom.  I'll take my single romance sim out for a night of dancing and the club will be filled with 300 cats, 200 dogs, and exactly 2 non-NPC sims.  But I digress.
266  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: OFB_Restocking bakery problem on: 2007 June 03, 19:51:42
You know, it's probably possible to settle this argument simply by making it possible to automatically cut up a cake from inventory, so you can make your cake in 6-packs and still sell it one piece at a time to annoy your sims.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Seems like the people who are complaining about the desserts have two main issues: a) having to make six servings of ANYTHING when only one is actually desired is annoying, and b) the game doesn't handle breaking group meals into single plates well, because Sims want to stuff their faces allthedamntime.
Who wants to make only one serving at a time? Considering that it would take the same amount of time to cook, it's inefficient. That's why I haven't downloaded the current hack. That's always why I never do Make...Single Plate. If Make...Single Plate yielded 6 servings to inventory, now that would be shiny.

Invisigoth, I'm aware of how coffee shops make coffee cakes and other items. I was stating that I've yet to buy a whole coffeecake at a coffee shop. 'Cause they don't sell them that way. 'Cause most people don't want a whole one every day, ya know?

Oh, I know.  I was just being a cranky tired girl because I had worked for 12 hours on my feet.  I'm sorry for nitpicking.  Next time I'm cranky I promise to take it out on my loved ones rather than MATY.
267  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Help, one of my sims isn't aging on: 2007 June 03, 09:09:12
Definitely not safe:
Drivers, repomen, social workers, call-in-sick-guys (if these even exist -- get the phonehack)

Irritating (because of stupid hardcoded behaviour), but otherwise probably safe:
Drama profs, cheerleaders, llamas, cows, nannies, gypsies

Think that's them.

How do you know if a sim is a driver?  Do they wear something special?  I'm pretty sure that I've never actually seen that NPC.
268  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: OFB_Restocking bakery problem on: 2007 June 03, 01:30:30
I've yet to go to Starbucks and buy a whole coffee cake to go with my iced raspberry coffee.
They bake a coffee cake whole then cut it into sellable portions. Unfortunately I work in food service, so I'm privy to such secret information. Its a waste of time to cook single portion desserts IRL food sales. In fact, if the game was to be more realistic they'd bake double or triple sized cakes because every business IRL makes desserts in mega bulk form. Unfortunately as it stands it is more realistic...chefs come in hours before open to prepare such bulk items and then portion them for sale.
As for the muffins, that's a valid point. I often cook a single muffin.
269  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: OFB_Restocking bakery problem on: 2007 June 01, 22:31:10
You shouldn't have to turn move objects on to put them in inventory... but maybe it's different since some EP or something. I haven't tried in awhile, it's a pain.

The food items that really make sense to have and need single servings... those are the ones you can't make :p Dumb Eaian logic.

When was the last time that you baked a single slice of cake?  Wink
