51  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: So anyone else not so happy about the new lifetime aspiration thing in FT? on: 2008 February 28, 09:32:14
It was too late last night, so I did not play much after the installation, but at least those sims which had already fulfilled their lifetime want keep their perma-plat status. There might be two ways to achieve it now, either by fulfilling the lifetime want or through the hobbies.

I find the whole aspiration benefit system hugely disappointing though. It's my own fault really, because I should have known, but I was so excited about a secondary aspiration. It was what I wanted to have in my game since I read the idea on the official forum a long time ago. I wanted a true mixture, but it looks like the secondary aspiration means nothing. It does not have an influence on the attraction between two sims, and as far as wants are concerned: my sims always got wants which "belonged" to other aspirations, so what's new there? So ultimately it only gives access to some of the benefits, which I find alltogether not that exciting.

Though I expected it to some extent, the first impression with Freetime is that it simply reprocesses a lot of ideas from previous expansions.
52  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Resurrection and romance on: 2008 February 26, 18:50:16
The reason is that the game still remembers them as being "fambly" and thus are immune to romances. Apparently, Maxis very zealously tried to avoid anything potentially squicky to the point where they broke stuff.

Only to blunder when setting relationships for existing sims, which is why Lazlo Curious made out with one of his half-sisters recently and then went to bed with the other. If I felt so inclined I could also start a homosexual relationship between Johnny Smith and one of his uncles.
53  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Resurrection and romance on: 2008 February 26, 08:03:10
If you resurrect a married sim, can you get them to fall in love with their ex-spouse?

When I resurrected Maxine, she and her ex wouldn't fall in love again. They were perfectly willing to make out and woohoo and the relationship is close to 100/100 on both sides.  Is this a normal problem? - I haven't had Uni very long, so I don't know all the wrinkles.  I notice they see each other as 'family', so I'm wondering if that's the problem.  DK if it makes any difference, but they have a son.  If it's not that, I guess resurrection is a real turn-off to these two. I've had frigid sims before, but that's usually a one-sided problem in a relationship.  I nuked attraction markers anyway and it didn't help.

I had this with one couple and apart from not falling in love again (which was annoying because it was a want of Nina, the wife) they also lost the bolts for each other although the attraction (I checked via ACR) was still there. It all came back as soon as they were remarried.
54  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Random game crashes. on: 2008 February 12, 23:47:44
Hi all, I don't know if this information is at all helpful.  But I have figured out a way around using my crappy graphics card until I get my updated one.  I am using Nvidia so I know the problems.  I have the basic integrated Geforce 6150 LE.  Anyway, when my game goes to the infamous blue screen of death, I wait out the period which is usually about three minutes and the screen returns.  I think exit whatever house or lot I am playing.  This will allow for another hour of so of playing time before the blue screen befalls my eyes once more.  I then repeat until I just get tired and turn the damn thing off.  Hopefully this is helpful

Dominique Huh

It doesn't work with the newer NVidia cards, but with your card you could use an older driver (6.14.0010.7772, dated June 2005) and you don't get the blue screen problem anymore.
55  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Diva not respawning on: 2008 February 11, 19:59:50
Okay, I was able to get a new Diva. Thanks again. In case anyone couldn't tell, I'm new to NPC creation (it's one of the few things I hardly ever use boolprop for). Should I do this for a new maid or just wait for one to spawn? (It's not like I really need more maids after all).

And one more thing, one of my sims recently married a Three Lakes local, will another one spawn in her place or do I have to do that manually too? (I don't mind, I didn't think manual spawning would be so easy).

I just looked it up (I recently moved in a Three Lakes local) and there is in fact a new sim. I haven't send another sim to Three Lakes since then, but I am rather sure that it is a local. The new one is a woman (the original was male) and there is a chance that she might be a new townie. I haven't seen her in town though and in my experience the townies/downtownies are not replaced unless they go below a certain number.
I was wondering about that question, because I plan to send some of the local teenagers to college eventually and I do not want to depopulate the vacation spots.

I got a new maid too when Kaylynn joined a household. She was replaced by a male maid and he showed up in all the houses where Kaylynn used to clean.
56  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: How do I wean myself off of snapdragons? on: 2008 February 09, 23:04:13
The reason everything takes so long is that sim-time is about 60 times faster than real-time, but sims do not move 60 times faster, instead moving only about as fast as normal people do. Therefore, if activities are made in scale with this, sims would move like they're on speed. This is why something that would take 3 minutes in real life, like walking across the lot, takes 3 hours for sims, meaning that "Run Here" is simply necessary. So when a sim takes an hour to pee, it's performing an activity that in real life takes about a minute.

Unfortunately, time-scaling issues like this afflict all games, and the Sims is no exception. Just look at how a tank is produced in a minute by a factory, in the same time it takes the same tank to drive across your base. It's the typical game-compression effect: Activities requiring microscopic amounts of time or resources take up a disporportionately large amount of it, while things requiring enormously macroscopic amounts take up disproportionately little. Thus, an activity like "peeing" consumes an enormous amount of a sim's proportional time while an activity like "become the CEO of a Microsoft-size corporation" takes up a few days, and a pizza costs $40 while a Lamborghini costs $10000. For this reason sims are at high risk for microscopic failures that just don't happen to real people, like pants-wetting, while easily able to achieve macroscopic successes, like becoming a CEO. While standing in a pool of their own piss.

That's why players have wished (and repeatedly requested since Sims 1) that there was an option to adjust the timing. I am not too concerned about time issues since I mostly play with aging-off and don't care if my sims stay downtown for 2 days but if I had the choice I would make the day pass slower.
57  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Trapped at the Double Palm on: 2008 February 05, 16:10:53
Yea, a lot of them are made with regular stairs instead of the modular stairs, so two sims can't use them at the same time.  I go through and replace them with modular stairs whenever I can.

Now that's interesting. I don't like the regular stairs and so have never noticed that there is a difference between them and the modular stairs.

59  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Pollination Tech needs makeover... on: 2008 January 29, 20:14:09
Sky is downloaded and in my game, now I only have to wait if I ever get an abduction again. By the way, did anybody else notice that he has the same name as the person starting this topic?

DaniCast, thanks for the compliment. I must admit that I am rather proud of my sims and there are more good ones, which are not included in the albums (yet). Those in the "visitor" album are not mine though, they are Sleepycat's, the only ones I ever downloaded.

As regards the hair, I would not create sims in bodyshop or CAS with unbinned hair either (I did a few times in the beginning), but in the end in doesn't really make much difference since hair can easily be changed. It is usually the first thing I do with toddlers anyway. Black hair is fine by me.

60  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: OfB Bookcase Behavior - individual book sales on: 2008 January 29, 19:55:20

As for making them sellable, there's a field in the OBJD that SimPE labels as "unused" (I believe it's field 0x003C, in the last section of the raw data), and in unsellable objects it's set to 1. You just change it to 0 and you're set. Aspiration rewards are easy because they already come with a price attached: the number of aspiration points required. Thus you can purchase it for aspiration, and sell it in a shop for money. The career rewards have no price, so you have to give it one in the OBJD. The nice thing is that both kinds of rewards won't sell back for money in buy mode, so the only way to sell a reward for cash is to sell it in a shop. Thus, you don't end up with a family getting $16K every time you delete a drained thinking cap. If you want, I'll post the packages I made so you don't have to bother with it too much. I didn't get around to giving the career rewards logical prices, but that's easy enough to change. So let me know if you want 'em.

I do. I was thinking about selling aspiration/career rewards before, especially since my sims always end up with a massive amount of aspiration points (the ones I have played for a long time approx. 300,000 points), which they never use for anything. Career rewards on the other hand are very useful, at least some of them. The only one which you will never see in my game - sellable or not - is the cowplant.
61  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: OfB Bookcase Behavior - individual book sales on: 2008 January 29, 14:50:37
I don't know what would be the maximum you could charge, but if you made the books hideously expensive, couldn't you give the bookcase as a gift to those sims, who are prepared to purchase a book for that price?
It isn't really a solution but a possible workaround if your main aim is to distribute the career rewards.

What did you do to make the rewards sellable?
62  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Pollination Tech needs makeover... on: 2008 January 27, 18:33:15
Here are some pictures of one of Cassandra's husband and one of their daughters ("Next Generation" album) as well as pictures of the two children which resemble Lilith ("Pleasantview" album).

http://www.picturetrail.com/doren_with_cats

The nose still looks different to me, compared to your Mary Sue/Daniel offspring, but it is hard to tell.

Did you check Mortimers genetics or did he simply end up with blond hair when you made him young again? I am playing the European version as well, so there is no difference there. That Cassandra's children all look like the father (Goopy in your case)  is not such a surprise. I think she does not have one dominant facial structure. The chin, eyes etc. I easily recognise as coming from him, but the mouth? And it is not the difference between the male/female face, their (only) son has it too.
63  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Pollination Tech needs makeover... on: 2008 January 26, 10:57:34
Thanks DaniCast. I am going to download your PT then, although I have a notion that I will never ever see an abduction in my game again. But if it happens, there is at least no risk that I will get this horrible alien nose.
As for the (half-)alien offspring, I think I will edit the genetics of the fathers before the births take place and then change them back afterwards. By rule of thumb (seelindarun, I have not come to the point of doing chi-square tests yet) I should get the results I want then.

I went through the genetics of the "broken" sims this morning with SimEnhancer. There is a section which shows you the expressed skintone, with one box labelled "recessive skintone?". A few sims I created had that box empty (N.A.), but it does not seem to matter too much. In the case of Johnny, Jill and Jenny Smith the expressed skintone was not available, the same was true for Vidcund Curious, Lola, Chloe, Erin and Kristen Singles. Pascal and Lazlo Curious were alright (I forgot to check the other families).
In the section below, you get the genetics of the parents and there is nothing missing there.

DaniCast, I also had a look at Mortimer and he has genetically brown hair in my game (with n.a. for the expressed hair colour).
What I found extremely surprising is what you said about Lilith and Angela Pleasant. Mary-Sue is based very much on the one asian face template, with Daniel it is hard to tell, but he definitely has a rather short nose. Lilith and Angela's faces seem to use a completely different template ("Benjamin Long"?) and I can only imagine them to come after the grandparents if they are Daniel's and Mary-Sue's daughters. Mary-Sue had another child, but not with Daniel and her son has the features I would expect from that face template. Lilith has four children (double twins!) and while two of them resemble the father, one of the boys (and one daugther) comes totally after her. He is going to have a very long nose and will not resemble Daniel or Mary-Sue in any way.
Cassandra's offspring on the other hand - and there is plenty - has these really thick lips - like Alexander. It is possible that I made a horrible mistake when I created the father, but my suspicion always was that Mortimer was responsible for that.
64  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Pollination Tech needs makeover... on: 2008 January 24, 19:46:42
Ah, so you checked Chloe and she is homozygous for her alien skin?  Then, if her breeding partner is also homozygous for his (un-binned) custom skin, their child has a 50% chance of showing either skin.  However, that child is obviously going to be heterozygous, no matter what it shows, so things get a bit uncertain as you go on down the generations.

It does not work like that with the regular skintones, thus my question about the genetic dominance of the skintone/eyes.
If you have one sim with regular Maxis skin/eyes - whatever colour but homozygous - and you pair it with homozygous custom skin/eyes, you always get the custom for the child.
This is a dangerous statement that hasn't been universally true since the early days of the game. A lot of creators now geneticize their custom eyes and skins, so that customs aren't always dominant. All of my eyes and custom skins are geneticized, and only a handful were done by me.

Mentally add "non-geneticised" to my statement if you wish for more precision. I don't think any of the skintones or eyes I have were geneticised by the creators and I have not altered them.

If you have one parent with heterozygous custom skin/eyes and one parent with homozygous regular skin/eyes, there is a chance of x percent (definitely less than 50) to get a child with regular Maxis skin (and custom eyes most likely). It's not quite like biology lesson, when we plagued the neighbourhood with our drosophila melanogaster breeds.
The alien eyes can't be 100 % dominant because I remember Pascal Curious (where I reloaded the game about a million times) giving birth to children with non-alien eyes (and did they look horrible!). I can not remember if they always had the alien skintone.
66  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Pollination Tech needs makeover... on: 2008 January 23, 07:55:12
I don't believe it is possible to make the PT's skin or eyes "less dominant".  The PT has homozygous, un-binned custom alleles for skin and eyes, whether you use a default replacement or not.

If Chloe Singles isn't genetically borked, she should have one skin allele from the PT (green) and one from her normal father (S1, S2, S3, or S4).

I don't know if they were truly bred in-game, but from what I have seen, none of the Maxis sims carry the genetics of their parents. Chloe and Lola have alien genetics on both sides. It's like Lilith and Angela (they have genetically red hair despite Mary-Sue being black haired). I think the only one who carries the genetics of mother and father is Cassandra Goth.
67  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Pollination Tech needs makeover... on: 2008 January 22, 20:25:21
I made one too, is posted at my site:
http://www.havesometea.net/danicastsims2

I like the facial structure, but I have some questions about your note:

If I would use this one as a replacement, it would pass on the green XM Sims hair (if downloaded) or - if I don't have that hair - I would end up with an alien which has any of the custom hairstyles I have? Meaning that if I am unlucky I have an alien that passes on blond dreadlocks or some other custom hair that I have been too lazy to delete? Could I modify the file, so that it has black hair as default again?

Did you make the alien skin/eyes genetically LESS dominant as they currently are? I currently have one alien pregnant (Chloes Singles) and the father has custom skin/custom eyes. I would be quite happy to hear that the alien skin/eyes are dominant even towards custom genetics, because I would like them to appear in the children. Since I have not replaced Pollination Tech (yet), I don't see abduction as an option to keep or increase the alien population.
68  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Stra-Fu#@!! TS2Ehn. on: 2007 December 20, 14:28:38
The issue with the genetics have been addressed by Rick - its the genetized/binned stuff that gives the error, and he wont change the program as he thinks that would be risky. I have noticed that when I rebinned the hairs with Wardrobe Wrangler, they didnt give that error anymore in SimEnhancer, same with eyes that I redid. If you just click ignore the program will work anyway, a little tedious of course if there is a lot of hairs binned the old fashioned way, but still.

I do not mind the error messages, but the files that throw the error are ignored, so I can't choose the skintones. I understand the part with the binned hair, but how do you bin eyes or skintones? How would I have to change the files, so that they work?
69  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Stra-Fu#@!! TS2Ehn. on: 2007 December 19, 16:05:58
You're better off asking for help on the TS2 Enhancer forums.  You'll get no sympathy here I'm afraid.

Or there.

Apparently Phyllis has had good response from Rick.  She's been singled out for good fortune it seems.

If this is true I would like her to request a change in the genetics part of SimEnhancer, because I do get a lot of data stream errors, which are rather annoying (and stop me from inserting skintones into the genetics of existing sims).

On the topic of language/grammar: Personally I would me more likely to ignore spelling mistakes etc. of someone with a better presentation. What can you expect if you use the most horrible, depressed and depressing looking sim I have ever seen as your avatar? Together with a name like ApatiaMax? I hated that little thumbnail picture since I have seen it on this forum for the first time, actually I find it nauseating.

I don't pay much attention to the environment score, but it has to depend on something else apart from walls, floors and expensive furniture. Size of the rooms and - most importantly - amount of windows/light?
I usually choose cheap floors and walls and I usually get a high environment score. I very rarely buy them expensive paintings and sculptures I use even less. My houses always have lots of windows though.
71  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Just how the hell many pictures do you have to acquire on vacay... on: 2007 December 09, 10:02:18
Where are you posting these? Are you uploading to something like livejournal? In that case, sure, you can overwrite the .xml file and then change the name before uploading to livejournal. I'm posting to the official site. If you overwrite the original .xml, when you upload to the official site it deletes the first copy. By linking another album in (preferably before you start with the new chapter) you can have your photos available in order on the lot so that you can write while on the lot. No switching around. No searching through a lot of unrelated crap in the + tab. I know the photos aren't lost completely, ever, unless you actually go in and delete them from the /Storytelling folder. (Which I do, but I'm anal about keeping my photo folders clean).

I also don't like that I can't delete photos in the + tab. So ridiculously annoying. If they are in the main tab, I can delete them at will.

Anyways, it's not that complicated...my explanation is probably at fault. Setting this up takes me all of a minute and a half...including waiting for SimPE to load the 'hood.

Aha! I am not posting on any site and I am usually ignoring the official one. So to me it sounded like you went through this whole procedure just to create an empty album and that did not make sense.

Now, I am confused about what you said about deleting pictures though. I would have to check, but I think I can delete pictures in both folders. What I find ridiculously annoying is the fact that I can not delete a chosen picture, but only the first one in the folder, whatever I have marked when I go on delete. Why they failed with such a simple function is beyond me, but it resulted in having a huge amount of pictures (about 11,000 total), which I find hard to reduce (removing them manually from the neighbourhood folder has become almost impossible). If you have found a way to delete what you marked, instead of something else, I would be very interested to know about that.

I know that some sites are not always available, but the transamerican link I must have tried for the last half year and I can't get on it. When was the last time you have been to that site? Does the link work for you now?
72  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Just how the hell many pictures do you have to acquire on vacay... on: 2007 December 07, 17:08:20
Some of my albums are huge and it would be nice to divide into sub-albums in game rather than messing around with dummy houses to store earlier chapters of a story.
Quoting myself, from BoolProp. This is how I organize things, and it works really, really well for my story telling style.
Quote from: Zazazu
Well, what I do may be a bit too technical and it takes a bit more prepwork, but I like it better than having a dummy sim. Let's see if I can post clearly.

First off, you need two programs. One is SimPE. If you have BV, you'll need the QA version as it's not updated yet. This is available at MATY until the official is out. As always with SimPE, be careful what you change and follow directions closely. You'll also need the Storybook Viewer, which really is an essential for storywriting anyways.

Now the nitty-gritty. Whenever you move a sim over to college or out on their own for a bit, your game considers this a new household and generates a weblog (story file) for that household. If you send an heir to college the first generation, you already have an unused story file floating about in the ether, lonely and unused. Why not give it a purpose? Open up the Storybook Viewer, then click on the open folder icon to open a file. You'll need to bring up your MyDocuments/EA Games/Sims2/Neighborhood00X/Storytelling folder (Neighborhood00X is a wildcard for whichever 'hood number the 'hood you are playing in is). Now you'll see a whole bunch of garbled number-string file names starting with "weblog". Open one. Is it blank? Lovely. Write down the name of this file on your handy-dandy notepad. If the first one wasn't blank, keep opening weblogs until you find a blank one.

Now close the Storybook Viewer. Open up SimPE. On the top menu bar, on the far right, you'll see an icon that shows a bunch of little figures and says "Neighborhood Browser" on mouse-over. Click it. Pick your 'hood, then "Load" (or Start, I'm away from my game computer). Wait 10 years. Once it's done loading, look on the right side below the menu bars. There's a whole bunch of sorts listed for each file type in your 'hood. Click on the "Family Information" file tab. You'll see a list of your families come up on the left. Click on the last name of the family you are wanting to change the album for. (Note: If I'm recalling incorrectly, it may be in the Lot Info file section instead.) Verify that you have the right family by looking over the individual sim names listed. You should see a field called "Album" that lists a string of numbers very much like what you just saw. Change that to the number of the new blank weblog, entering just the portion you see shown (it's like x9F295G9). Save on the left side above the pane, save on the top right corner.

Shut down SimPE. Go into your game. Load the family. Fresh new album right there on the lot you are playing, and you don't have to go in and out of the lot/game to write your story. All the pictures you take in the lot will be right there organized in reverse order as per usual. The original album is still in your files, just floating in the ether. Your old photos are still available for use by clicking on the + icon. You can link the old album back the same way you just changed everything above if you ever need to.
What I'm wondering, and am planning on trying on my test account, is if you can't just wipe the album reference in SimPE and the game will create a new one.

Storybook Viewer. That's the one I meant, but the Transamerican link does not work anymore, so the program is only available at MTS.

What you do with SimPE sounds unnecessary complicated to me (and I am also using the story files from college). What is the advantage? You can not edit the original/first album in-game anymore, so why not simply overwrite it (after saving a copy of it in a different folder)? Overwriting the .xml file does not result in loss of the pictures, so I don't understand what you are gaining with this method.

73  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Just how the hell many pictures do you have to acquire on vacay... on: 2007 December 07, 15:45:05
Does this give us a way to organise photo's in game or can you only use it for holiday snaps?

Some of my albums are huge and it would be nice to divide into sub-albums in game rather than messing around with dummy houses to store earlier chapters of a story.

No, it does not really work for sub-albums. I am using the Album Editor ("Sim Album", I can't look up the proper name because I am at work) from MTS to edit and store stories. It is a very handy program if you are writing a lot and want to make the stories available to friends without putting them on a homepage or the official sims site.
I had the same problem with some of the stories being 60 pages long (html with 6 pictures on each page). All you have to do is to store the previous .xml in another folder and then replace the one in the game with an (empty or almost empty) backup copy if available. Otherwise you have to delete the pictures from the story one by one. You can always edit the previous stories with SimAlbum even if you don't have them in the game anymore. It is more cumbersome, but it works.
74  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Graphics Settings on: 2007 December 06, 19:34:35
Also, don't SMOOTH edges. Edges are EDGES. They should not be SMOOTH. A SMOOTH edge is not an EDGED edge anymore! Smooth edges merely cause blurriness, the bane of copypasta.

I agree that smooth edges are a contradiction in terms, but what this feature is supposed to do is to remove edges where no edges should be. A round circular shape is meant to be smooth, in computer graphics it has more edges than anything else.

That said, I am not sure if I would see much difference if I had smooth edges turned off.

Here's something I always wanted to know (actually since Sims 1):

Does the zodiac sign have any influence on the personality or behaviour of a sim? Of course if I create a sim in CAS the sign will change with the distribution of the personality points, but if I change it with Insim for example, would it make any difference apart from that sim suddenly being more (or less) attractive to certain other sims?

Does it matter - for the behaviour of a sim - how I distribute the personality points? I could never free myself of the suspicion that there are only three categories - low, medium, high - and that the range from 1 - 10 is deluding the players, so that they believe they have more choice.
