Title: Recolors of Marvine's Animated Spiral Staircase
Post by: Ambular on 2007 October 07, 06:59:35
Black and white wrought iron and white stone (all in one package.)  Transparency slightly wonky due to UV mapping issues I have no way to fix, but I did my best.  The iron textures are derived (heavily modified) from textures ganked from CycloneSue's spiral stairs.  Enjoy, feedback greatly appreciated.

Cheers, I particularly like the plain white one, it fits with my current hoods and schemes. :)

These will look great on a house I'm currently working on.  Thanks for a great job Amber!

Thank you for doing this. Does the recolor work for the 'matching' fences ?

I'm afraid not.  :/  I can look into trying to clone and recolor the fences at some point.  In the meantime, the Maxis wrought iron fence should look decent with the black recolor.

Whoo! These'll be great! I love them darned spiral stairs, but they're all wooden.

I am so childish.  :D

Well done, I kept hoping that somebody would try a wrought iron recolour and these look very good :)
You're mentioning mapping issues though, and I'm specially anal with uv-maps... I'll have to take a look and figure out what I messed up.

Oooooh, I'm so glad you like them!  :D  The problem I ran into is that part of the step surface shares its UV map with both the railing and the central pole, so when I tried to make parts of the steps transparent for the cutout effect, I wound up losing bits of the rail and the pole.  That's why one corner of the cutout pattern on the steps isn't properly transparent; I had to leave it opaque or the rail looked really crappy.  (You can see on the backside of the pole that it's still missing some bits.)

Something else I noticed is that when I tried to work around that problem by making those overlapping parts of the texture translucent (so the step would still be see-through but it wouldn't be so noticeable on the rail--it would also have been helpful for making the rail supports look more convincingly twisted,) I got a really bizarre Escher-esque graphical effect with the mesh parts when I set the stdMatAlphaBlendMode to "blend" in the Material Definition.  So I had to leave it set to "none."

Ok, my bad - I wanted to keep a good definition without using huge textures so it seemed like a good idea at the time, but I should have made the mesh differently so the pole could be tiled on a smaller part of the texture... Not sure it would have looked good though. This must have been a pain for you! Once again, well done.

(I wanted to reply earlier but had the kind of computer crash that makes you check you bank account and start check lists for programs and stuff - was a little wobbly when it finally worked again >_<)

Love these, and can't wait to try them out!  Thank you AD for the splendid recolours, and Marvine, congratulations on finally solving the animations problem.  I got a bit sick of the teleporting that previously was the only solution, looked ok in a fantasy or futuristic kind of theme, but in a more everyday theme it looked out of place - and I always loved the Sims1 spiral stairs and once they appeared in Unleashed I rarely used any others!

I've basically stopped using any stairs other than Marvine's spirals and now I can use these as well - thanks!  I try to use only Maxis stuff for lots I may want to upload but these are just so much better.  Shame on Eaxis - good on you Amber and Marvine!

I wonder, will the animations work on other spiral stairs?

I can't honestly understand why, if Maxis could make them for Sims1, why EAxis couldn't have done the same for Sims2 - I suppose they thought, they've given us the modular stairs, and we can make landings etc, but that isn't really quite the same as proper spirals - and they are really necessary to making certain kinds of houses look truly authentic, such as Art Nouveau villas or ancient Scottish castles......

The same animations are used on each version of the stairs. They are different from the regular stair animations in that the sims turn a bit as they step up or down. A new spiral stairs mesh that had the same footprint and stair height should be able to use these same animations. You will need to contact Marvine about cloning them, but recolors were already permissioned in her post.

You gotta be kidding, I can't make a wallpaper or a floor, so I'm not about to start cloning stairs! ;D  I just wondered if the animations were tied to that mesh, or whether they'd either work, or attempt to work, with other spirals - mainly because if they did and it looked even odder than teleporting, then I couldn't have both Marvine's and someone else's stairs in the same downloads folder.

Marvine´s Stairs have a separate Animations File. They work only with Marvine´s Stairs. Other Spiral Stairs dont get the Anims.

Well, I'm glad about that, really, as a partial carry-over to other spirals would look dreadful!  But maybe now Marvine's proved it can be done, other creators will have a rethink about creating anims for their stairs.

Witch, did you get your kid to sign up?  Witchboy is such a convenient handle.  It would be cute.  Slave in the real world, slave in the meat world.
