Title: Arrr...Is it safe?
Post by: Sapnish on 2007 June 10, 23:52:02
I'm looking to ... "legitimately aquire" (*coughstealcough*) a copy of H&M Stuff*. I've only got LimeWire for downloading stuffeths, so I'm wondering how trustworthy that program is for downloading .exe files, or if there's another place I can go to better ensure that I don't accidentally download something that's going to explode my PC. Any help will be appreciated.

*I really would rather only get the clothes, but I'll grab the whole pack if that's all there is. I'd just rather not pay for it.

I would download utorrent and have a look on torrentspy.com, if I were you ;)

Ok, I'll give that a go. Thanks.

I, uh, tried this recently. Waited 10 hours to download, got useless crap with no .exe  ???. So, yeah, turned me off quickly. I've "acquired" other things and no issue, but this one...couldn't find a good torrent. I'd just wait for someone to rip the stuff. That way you can pick and choose what you want in your game.

Have you tried The Pirate's Bay? (Don't bother with PROCYON CloneCD BTW, it got nuked on nforce.)

And what do you mean by .exe files? Game ISOs come usually in cd image format, like bin/cue or CloneCD.

I did ISOhunt. No .exe, just some cloaking program, and key generator, and some image files...but nothing I could use. And a bunch of stuff that looked like Chinese. Then I read the comments (dumb Kari can't read beforehand) and people are complaining that it's completely unusable. So I just decided to chuck it and wait until someone rips what I want. I only want a couple of outfits and those huge doors.

I must have got that before it got nuked!

I got mine from torrentspy and used azureus. It was done in 45 minutes.

 :-\

I waited six hours yesterday for the download from torrentspy to finish, and I ended up with the same thing as Zazazu. I had read the comments, but it seemed like they all must have known something I didn't and had been able to get it to work. Good thing my computer competant ex-bf was online at the time, and was able to advise me on a few things. I didn't get the pack, but I did get a decent up-to-date anti-virus program installed. lol

I may just wait for somebody Awesome to rip out the clothes.  :P

Hm. It's telling me 1 day + right now. Over cable. Might be a borked estimate, though, I sometimes notice that if you wait a few minutes it all the sudden speeds up.

EDIT: Yup. Weirdness. Goes down a minute a second.

I've had downloads that took 3 days that were about the same size as that stuff pack because there weren't many seeders.  Sims torrents are usually well seeded by comparison.

Yeah, use either Halite or microTorrent on Windows.  Use isohunt as your search engine since it has a massive list (http://www.isohunt.com/stats.php?mode=btSites) of torrent sites that it searches.  Also search The Pirate Bay since it's one of the few sites that aren't covered by isohunt.  Demonoid's a private tracker covered by isohunt so you can find a lot of their stuff without signing up but if you want to use their engine you've got to have an access code or register during their free registration days.

The thing about torrents is; "what goes around, comes around".  Are any of you guys seeding?
This is one SP I simply don't want to install, but I'll consider downloading it just to seed.

Yeah I always seed for the majority of the day.  I only have a laptop so I do need to shut it down at least once a day due to overheating problems.  When I get my desktop, I will leave that on 24/7.

I always seed to 300% or 72 hours past 100%, whatever comes first.

Try it again, really. It looked the same to me, too, but this time I actually got the .mdf and .mds files. Last time they were missing and I just got some gobbly web page linkages and jpegs of the outside of the Chinese version box and some random pic. Plus that cloaking crap and the keygen for Celebrations. All those are still in, but at least the .mdf and .mds are there to make it work. You need Daemon Tools.

And the keygen is crap. Go with what's in comments.

'Course, I still didn't get it to install due to my legitimately cracked .exe for Seasons (I have the EALink version and having to be connected to the 'net worries me). No biggie, just didn't care to bother with fixing it last night.

I'm seeding at 0.5kb/s to some poor bugger; ETA 1 week and 3 days.  I don't know where the bottle neck is, but I don't think it's in my end.

Thankilly-dank, witch. If I can't figure out how to get this one to work, I'll just conclude that I'm not smart enough to download games via torrents.  :P

What are you using to mount the image? I used Daemon Tools. I also tried with MagicISO, but it didn't work. So you just have to find what works. Is there an .mds file in there? That's all you need.

Simple Instructions
Start Daemon Tools - right click - virtual cd/dvd rom - device - mount image - select file Sims2SP5.mds. This is if you use the one I gave a link to. I know you said you tried it, but it works.

AND, the celebrations keygen does work. You have to press the yellow disk next to the scrolling text. Then at the top it will show your drives and what you have in them. Select the H&M drive and then generate key. I didn't have any problems using it.

Without your instruction, MistyBlue, I'd still be a game downloading-retard. :B you said "mount the image" and I said to myself " 'mount?' there's an image? what greek are you talking?" So, being the savvy internetter that I am, I googled daemon tools. I had no idea I needed an outside program to get the game to run. ::) But it works now! W00t! Thank you for your assistance.

The same with me. I hadn't realized it either-- thanks MistyBlue.

There's one thing I'm not clear on though. What is seeding? I've not tried this before, and I'm not anxious to ruin my brand new laptop, though I don't think the SPs are worth money either.  :-\

Seeding is a BitTorrent term, not a piracy/cracking term -- it means to leave the torrent open after your own download has finished, so that you continue to upload to others who are still downloading. (You also are uploading to others while downloading, but once your DL has finished you have all the pieces of the file, and are a better source than when you only had some.) It's polite to seed at least for a little while, to help keep the torrent working smoothly.

(Stupid keyboard.)

i use torrentz.com and then load the trackers from all the sites it links to. I wouldn't have to do this if i used bitcomet for download but their self promotion and all the hoop-la with the program annoys me, i prefer my programs to be clean and tidy. I use bittorrent.

With the other stuff packs it was no big deal, one downloaded within a day for me. I had to download copies of my nl and ofb as well as my disks no longer work even though they have been kept in the box after install with a no-cd key being used(i acidentaly ended up with a NL bonus disk from china with odd clothes). Awhile back i had to talk a girl that was a member of my lj community through torrenting and mounting her first game as her copy no longer worked and she needed to reinstall, i suppose the whole thing is a mind blow when its your first time. It was straight forward, set her up with daemon tools told her what the bin and cue files where. What to do with the other types you may get in a download. Shes now happily playing seasons and *cough* the celebration stuff she legaly paid 30 bucks for*cough* ...Kansas prices are nuts.

Oh, okay, thanks. :) I've obviously not tried this before, but after I actually paid for FFS :o I told myself never again.

Is it safe.. to Patch these copies? I didn't bother with the first seasons patch because it didn't fix anything important and I didn't know if would work, but the second patch looks like its worth getting. When I downloaded the patch it said to make sure you have the CD available.. which I can get if I really need it but im wondering if it will install fine without it if I mount the image again or leave the Crack .exe in.. I'm guessing the later wouldn't work though.

oh and btw never use Limewire... last time I tried getting something from there all I got was Trojans and viruses, Torrent spy and other places are a lot safer especially if you read all the comments.

I can't speak specificly for the second patch, but patching a game running from an image worked just fine in, ummm, the aquired games I know of ;)

The Seasons patch is looking for the Seasons disk, not H&M. So this has nothing to do with it. Now, as for needing the Seasons disk for patching, you may be screwed if you "acquired" it. I don't "acquire" EPs, but do use a cracked .exe so I don't have to be worried about being online while I load up the game (EALink). I have to replace my cracked .exe with the real one before patching or it cries.

I'd wait to do the patch, though. It didn't fix a few things it stated it fixed, and borked some previously fixed stuff. Crying babies, and I noticed coat wearing is worse, not better.

Sims Patches are perfectly safe to install piracy wise.  You don't have to have an EA games account to download them, and the patch does not phone home in any way, or require CD-keys or other annoyances.
Depending on how you get around the CD requirement you might have some issues; I'm not sure.  I own all my EPs.
