Post by: coricaman on 2006 September 18, 01:05:01
I am a fan of Paint Shop Pro 8 Studio. Mostly because it includes somthing called "Picture Tubes". A paintbrush like object where you can drop in flames, lighting bolts, candy, and cheese  :D. Automaticly! Pluse it has a macro that repates opreations for all open windows. Very usefull for recoloring

I'm pretty sure this is Retardo material.

Anyways, I prefer Adobe Photoshop Elements.  It had all that I need, at least.

I have PSP9 sitting on my drive from a time ago when graphics were important (lost the feel for it).
Adobe is generally more professional-acquainted, but PSP was the first real image editing suite I learnt from and makes my choice.

Has anyone tried out the version 10/X of Paint Shop Pro?
It looks like Jasc got borged by Corel, 'eck.  :-\

PSP, v6 (v7 for certain features).  Other programs are too cluttered up with crap and seem to be designed by cruel, sadistic people.

I have v10, but haven't installed it.  Saw it, though.  I hate Corel, so...

v10 is pretty much like all the others. some nice new features though.

I don't know what an image editimg program is...

However I currently use Adobe Photoshop for my image editing needs.

I also enjoy Corel Painter for extra flair.

And who doesn't love a good Wacom tablet to go along with all that?

:D :D :D

Adobe Photoshop CS2 for general image editing and Macromedia Fireworks 8 when using a tablet.  I haven't found a good Vector-only program though.

PSPX is horrible compared to other versions, you're probably better off even getting the GNU Image Manipulation Program or Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.  Load times are about as slow as Photoshop CS2, and for some reason it hides the color picker.

It's free. Just as powerful as PSP or Photoshop, IMHO.

I totally agree. It's all I use.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 just has so many features that nothing else comes close, but a lot of people say the thing's really bloated and has features that many people wouldn't use.  I doubt a lot of people even know about Vanishing Point or the Soft Repair functions that came with CS2, nor would they use them a whole lot even if they did know.

GIMP's pretty good, although I haven't used it a whole lot.  It's free and has more features than some of the $100 packages out there but I really, really hate the name.

I have tried pretty much everything and I always go back to PS CS, its my graphics editor of choice. When I first started out fooling around with graphics I tried all the free ones and by far the best I found was Serifs Photoplus, in fact I still use it at work since they dont give us a graphics editor.

I use Micrografx Picture Publisher 8.
Mainly because it's the one I've always used (since 4.0 anyway).

I don't think it's as powerful as Photoshop, and it lacks a bit in layers, but I've been using it so long that I know how to fake it. :P

I use Irfanview and ImageMagick .. not as nifty as GIMP but both are easier to use .. layering doesn't make sense to me so until it "clicks" I gave up on GIMP. Prolly why I have so much trouble with Simpe .. docking etc doesn't quite tickle the correct neurons and I give up in frustration.

Both of my favs are free .. I use Irfanview on my desktop and I use ImageMagick online: http://studio.imagemagick.net/MagickStudio/scripts/MagickStudio.cgi (http://studio.imagemagick.net/MagickStudio/scripts/MagickStudio.cgi) and http://www.irfanview.com/ (http://www.irfanview.com/) IM can be downloaded but I couldn't get it to work back then.. maybe I should try again now that I understand my pc more.

I tried GIMP. Didn't like it at all. It produced artifacts when editing images, pixels didn't move around the way they should, etc., etc.

In terms of results quality, Photoshop is really way, way above any of the other editing programs, although I do grant that PSP is a gazillion times easier to use. I've tried everything else, but eventually I had to go back to the Photoshop I "obtained from a friend".

Photoshop CS. I guess I just use Photoshop because it's what I 'grew up' with. When I first got in to 'real' computers (i.e. moved on from the Atari ST and the Amiga) I got hold of a Mac LC plus Quark and Photoshop.

It was fantabulously slow. Want to print out a proof page in A4? Should be done in about 45 minutes. Want to print out a complete proof of a 64 page magazine? Hit print and come back in a couple of days (generally to find that the third page in had jammed). Still, Photoshop was incredible to me in those days and, like anyone using that sort of kit, I learned to be patient.

Actually, I was always patient thanks to the use of industrial scale narcotics and unutterable laziness. I have always been the sort who is happy to sit and watch an entire defragmentation of a disc. Sad, but true.

Sounds like they're referring to an old testing version from about 5 years ago. GIMP is nice and shiny nowadays. GIMP is up to 2.2.13 (or 2.3.11 if you like testing new features).

Is it better now? I tried it way back when, back in the TS1 days, but I guess it's improved since then.

It's insane how many Photoshop Elements versions they have made since CS, they just released 5.0 not too long ago.  I'm wondering how much they're actually changing with these upgrades, or they're just tinkering around making a more bloated interface.  The last version of it that I tried was 3.0, so it's probably a little different now.

I could see where MSPaint could have its uses (Pixel Art), but for what most people use a Image Manipulation program like CinePaint or GIMP would be better.

I've got Gimp and PSP, but I use Photoshop Elements the most. It's just the easiest one for me, and I usually don't need all the features from the other ones. I use Irfanview a lot (it's set as my picture viewer), and PhotoFiltre sometimes. PhotoFiltre is a great program with which to learn the basics of image editing.

I definitely use Irfanview as my default image viewer. It loads the quickest and cropping pics is a breeze.

The GIMP is great; especially since there's now a portable version at http://portableapps.com/ (http://portableapps.com/) that I can load on my USB hard drive and take with me.

For lighter tasks, though, I still use Image Analyzer (http://meesoft.logicnet.dk/Analyzer/) quite a bit. It's also free, loads instantly, is easy on system resources...and, while it doesn't have all the options of other programs, I can easily find and understand the ones it does have.

Title: Re: Your Choice Image Editimg Program
Post by: Paperbladder on 2006 September 20, 00:57:06
I don't recommend installing RC1 it due to the fact the Defragmenter really doesn't work right (Diskeeper doesn't work on Vista either) and it always seemed to use 10% of my PC power (Pentium Core Solo 1.66Ghz) even in the "Ye Olde Windoze" Theme.  Besides that, it forces a larger size for the icons and makes it very confusing to get around if you're used to XP.  They've also slapped a shiny coat of paint on their older programs such as Minesweeper, Microsoft Paint, and Solitaire so they have that going for them.

CorelDRAW X3's pretty nice compared to Adobe Illustrator CS2, and it's $100 cheaper.  I'm guessing Paint Shop Pro X1 came out this summer or something, but I'm not even interested in it anymore since the Corel people screwed it up.

My Image Viewer?  I use Microsoft Windows XP, but I do have something installed called Microsoft Office Picture Viewer that is better than the default one but I really don't use it since double clicking an image takes me into PS CS2.

Wow. There must not be many people on the Vista team who remember DOS 6.

Though I'm not sure I'm worthy, especially as it comes from you, who have the tres cool glamrod sig I have coveted from the start. *bows before superior Senatorial being* (What really sells it is the "from old sim-latin glamrota" bit.)

To do natural colors, you really only need to adjust color balance, hue/saturation, or brightness/contrast. That gets you pretty much the whole spectrum, from dark brown to platinum blonde.

Although depending on the quality of the texture itself results vary, and occasionally you get a crummy ass texture that looks fine in dark colors, but in lighter colors looks like utter shit. Then you have to do some further fiddling, but for the most part, color balance, hue/saturation, brightness/contrast.
