Title: Not Sims related, but a rant, and help needed. Google toolbar?
Post by: tIIsuggas on 2006 September 07, 06:09:39
My daughter, has installed 'live messenger'.  Along with the installation she has added the google toolbar.

I cannot see any way of getting rid of it.  I am so damned pissed of with her I could wring her neck.

Does anyone know how to get rid of it please?

I have tried 'add remove programmes'.  It isn't listed.

I have tried all the clicky tabs, I can't see an option there either.

I don't want it, I hate it, and it has made my browsing window smaller.

Well, I just googled this and came up with this:-

1. Click on the "Settings" button located directly on your Google Toolbar. Please note that if you don't have a "Settings" button on your Toolbar, then you likely have an older version installed. Instead, please click on the Google logo button located to the left of your search box.
2. Choose "Help" and then "Uninstall."
3. Add comments about your experience with the Toolbar if you wish, then press the "Uninstall the Google Toolbar" button.

Don't know if it'll help. Good luck.

/me patpats her google toolbar.

I like it...  wouldn't be without it!  It's not as though the amount it slices off the top of the browser window is terribly huge, and it's damned convenient being able to search without first going to a site...

But yeah, you can uninstall it the way Aussieone said

I love my google toolbar.  But yeah, it's easy to get rid of.

They are a really pushy about giving it to you when you don't want it, but it really is a good product.  It blocks my pop-ups.

It used to block my popups really well...  but then I changed to XP, and it doesn't work so well any more :(

I had a similar problem with the fucking yahoo toolbar.  It came bundled with Adobe reader, which I thought was a respectable program.
The only way to uninstall that was to download the toolbar again and install it seperately, then remove it from add/remove programs.

I hate bundleware.  If I want the yahoo toolbar, I'll install the yahoo toolbar, not acrobat reader.

I was stuck with the Yahoo toolbar for months.  I tried absolutely everything.. my techie guy tried everything.  :-\   Eventually I gave in and emailed Yahoo.. and they sent me a removal file.  Gone in minutes!!

I was still pretty miffed that I had to do that to get rid of something that I never wanted in the first place.. >:(

I had the google toolbar & the yahoo one - together, nightmare as I don't even remember downloading them, must have been late at night when I wasn't paying much attention.  It was such a hassle allowing pop-ups from certain sites as I had to click on them both, drove me nuts.

Glad you got it sorted.

I was really annoyed when I tried to install the latest version of Daemon Tools. You cannot install it unless you agree to have the When U Save (or something like that) installed. They say you can uninstall it after installation is complete, but I just chose not to use Daemon Tools, anymore. Or at least go back to an older one.

Sucks, because loading with my disk seems to take longer...or is that just my imagination?

And this, kids, is why we use this (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/).

Usually if you choose custom install instead of standard or default install, you can choose not to install bundled apps. Unless you're installing QuickTime, which forces you to install iTunes at the same time. You can then uninstall iTunes with Add/Remove Programs, but most likely stuff is left behind in the Registry. Apple sucks.

I usually check carefully before installing anything, making sure I don't get a lot of stuff I don't want or need.  I almost always do a custom installation.
Adobe seemed like a company I could trust.  I won't make that mistake again.

Yes, when it is I installing, I don't usually get the bundleware.  But, when it is my daughter who is trying to do it in a hurry, because I told her specifically NOT to install something, is entirely a different matter.

Time to remove her administrator priveliges.

IE 7 doesn't really even need Google Toolbar if you are using it just as a Popup Blocker and Search.  Then again, IE 7's ugly and defaults to Windows Live as the search.  It's also a pain to install, it's the only browser that I know of that has to RESTART THE COMPUTER after installation.  Restarting Firefox to change your skin pales in comparison.

Most people that have this in Firefox are probably recent users (Not used to the Built-In Search) or users that translate pages a lot.  If the reason you're sticking with IE is that you can't run Firefox/Opera due to the fact you're at Work/School, get a portable version.  Portable Firefox is here (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable).  Portable Opera is here (http://www.opera-usb.com/operausben.htm).

I have the admin privileges removed for the two godchildren who are using my computer, but I shouldn't have to do that for my own kids, who should know better.

...What am I saying? I must be ill.

I had the yahoo bar and aol bar crap going on with the IE too. Shortly afterward I discovered --well, got my nose rubbed into it-- Modzilla and never looked back. IE now lies dormant and is only used for places that can't fully support Firefox. Luckily there is only one for me, my web-classroom.

NOTE to preempt comments due to reading into/misunderstanding my post: I know some people don't like Firefox, but I love it. I love the multiple tabs, the stability, just about everything about it. I never had any problems with it to-date; certainly not in the magnitude that IE continuously dumped on me. Personal choice, no slighting intended, and no lecture needed/wanted.

Veilchen, you said web-classroom.  Are you taking courses that way?  I may pick your brain a little later on that if it's OK - I found out some info about taking the courses I need for Pharmacy and I can take them online so I thought I may do that.

Install IE Tab (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/), and you can tell Firefox to use the IE rendering engine for pages that don't support Firefox yet, thus eradicating the need to use IE ever again,

I have done that now, thanks for the reminder.  The kids have the guest account.

Cool!  I missed that one somehow.  I've been using IE View to cover this problem, but I'll definitely install this.

Woot! I have had it for a year and a half, and I am still discovering new features/plugins. Plus the skins are SO SEXY.

BLANGED-OUT Pimpzilla, fr'instance.

Brynne, when I installed the new Daemon Tools I was able to get rid of When U Save by running Ad-Aware SE. Daemon Tools still works fine.

Pick away, my friend. I took a lot of courses over the web classes, and the best thing about them is that I could do the work whenever I wanted to. It's a lot more work than in-class lectures, most professors want to make sure that the students get the work done, but it was still great to be able to have my own schedule. They had webCt for a while, which was okay, not good, not bad, but the online chat-meetings were sometimes a challenge. Then they got Prometheus, which I liked, unfortunately they dumped that one and went with webtycho. It's not difficult to navigate, but it lacks a lot of nice features that Prometheus had. Oh well.

However, I'm sure that you are not concerned about technical issues :D. You'll do just fine, I'm sure. As long as you log in every day and check announcements and such, you'll stay up-to-date. The toughest one for me was the English Lit course. We had to read Louise Erdrich, James McBride, and Margaret Atwood, and I was just dying to be able to discuss those with my classmates. The message board, white board, and the chat-room just didn't feel adequate, lol.

I don't know whether you still have my e-mail address, so I'm PMing it to you, just in case.

Thanks Venusy, I missed that one too. I just got it, and I am truly grateful. Now IE can really be ignored. I owe you a drink ;)

Pimpzilla? Now that I've got to see, thanks for the link Assmitten.

If you're using Windows, Opera (http://www.opera.com) is generally superior.  Firefox 1.5 is Generally Slower, Less Secure, and has less features than Opera.  Fx's bonuses lie in the extensions, but buggy ones can cause all sorts of problems.  Firefox 3.0a1 seems to be a little faster in everything than 1.5, I'm hoping they will keep improving its speed/release the source so I can use it as a browser again.  I just kind of find it a little sad that a "slimmer" browser runs slower than fully loaded suites(Opera and Seamonkey).

As for Linux, it's the same speed as pretty much all the other browsers unless you use a build optimized for your processor.

I tried Opera, but for some reason it doesn't play nicely with my computer.

Seamonkey? Truly? Never heard of it, but I definitely have to see that one ;)

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/
When Firefox and Thunderbird got really popular, the Mozilla Foundation ditched support for the Mozilla Application Suite but provided the source to anyone that still wanted to edit it.  Essentially, Seamonkey is the successor to the Mozilla Suite which includes an IRC Client, News Client, and HTML editor in addition to being a browser.  It can also accept Firefox extensions, but they're harder to remove and still would have the same problems as they do in Firefox.  It looks exactly the same as the Mozilla Suite, so if you thought it was too bulky nothing much has actually changed.
