Title: Another shameless Ubuntu plug
Post by: dizzy on 2006 July 27, 03:40:49
Quick update:

- Still using Ubuntu
- Now running VMware and upgrading my box, so hopefully I'll have Sims 2 functional again
- All my old data went poof so I'm starting over from scratch (probably not going to do any more modding)

Am I crazy or did Hobbsee flee to go work at Ubuntu?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hobbsee

If so, she is now a Master Of The Universe which is pretty darn close to being More Awesome Than You.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I kinda missed hanging around here and the chat, but there was some family complications. Suffice it to say, it was not fun. Hopefully I can start making up for that here pretty soon.  ;D

Looking forward to OFB (haven't even seen that yet). In the meantime, I'll probably just randomly surf for a while.

Dizzy!!!!!!  We missed you!  I tried to tell JM you weren't dead, but he wouldn't believe me.  He said he had his "sources" who reported that you'd been found dead in your apartment.  :P

Welcome back dizzy! Your presence has been sorely missed. I just thought I'd pop by and add to the welcome back sentiments. :)

A shame that you wont be modding anymore. We've lost some great modders in you and Inge. Even tho more and more people seem to be getting into modding... I'm not so sure how I feel about them. :P

Oh wells. Totally understandable tho. Regardless. Welcome back and glad to hear that the rumors about your death have been awesomely ;) exaggerated. Hee hee.

Also, Hobbsee has a scrawny pencil neck.

Didnt realise i was being so closely watched.  I mostly keep the ubuntu stuff pretty quiet.

Anyway, no, i dont have a job there - in that i dont get paid.  yet.  hopefully that'll change, once i get a bit more into it.  Anyway...

Yes, i got MOTU :D  And it's very useful.  Upload rights are fun!

Oh yeah, and Hello everyone!  I'm in chat more than forums - i tend to avoid forums.

Oh, and Pescado, that's the done list, the to-do list is somewhere else, and is incomplete.  Silly Pescado.

Well, whichever works for you. I use Ubuntu. I tried out the latest Opera and it's overrated IMHO. I also tried out that uslab (start menu thingy) and it's okay, but it's no substitute for a real Gnome menu.

The thing that makes Ubuntu really cool is its brownness.  ;)

Anyhow, I use Ubuntu on my linux box, and I love it, it's great. I would (and do) reccommend it to anyone. :)

Title: Re: Another shameless Ubuntu plug
Post by: Paperbladder on 2006 July 28, 05:24:59
I tried out the latest Opera and it's overrated IMHO.
I tried out Firefox, and it's much more overrated IMHO.  It doesn't pass Acid2, Firefox 3 no longer supports 95/98, and is generally slower than Seamonkey.

OpenSUSE worked better, but I still had too many problems with it.  I only got Seamonkey and Opera to install on it, and when I tried to install "critical" updates it wouldn't install them.  It took several tries to get rid of FF and OpenOffice.  It also wouldn't install simple things, like Wine and KOffice either.  I do have to give it credit though, it got farther than Kubuntu.  However, I haven't had a Windows XP program fail to install in a long time.

Then again, maybe Linux just hates me.  I can never seem to get into the console because it won't let me enter a password, and those two distros just won't let me install stuff on them.

Title: Re: Another shameless Ubuntu plug
Post by: dizzy on 2006 July 28, 23:06:37
Well, if you do decide to come back to Ubuntu, Opera is pretty easy to install (via apt-get):

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OperaBrowser

Sorry, I guess Linux just likes me better. I've never had any trouble with Wine or CVSCedega. 99% of all the programs are available with one or two mouse clicks to install. Firefox and Opera are almost exactly the same speed on my machine. Never had any problems that I couldn't work around by editing xorg.conf or the fstab or reading a man file.

Can VMware really run TS2 and the expansions?

I'm asking because I've been looking at Ubuntu for a little while now and I'm getting pretty interested.  A friend of mine has it and says that he likes it.  I keep hearing people rave about it online.  And if it can play TS2 as good as it plays in Windows then I'm willing to drop Windows like a bad habbit.

I know there are programs out there like Wine and Cedega that can run Windows games in Linux.  But I'm not too sure if they can run them as well as they run in Windows.

I suppose I could just do a dual boot like I had with Windows and Debian a few years ago.  But that was rather annoying.

I'm pretty sure VMware can run TS2. The only problem is you need a relatively new processor for decent speed, something that supports virtualization, preferably.

Actually, thanks to superior memory and file handling, Wine typically runs programs better than Windows as long as they are compatible. Dual booting is annoying, but I seriously don't trust Windows on the internet anymore. Their security policies have really been going bad lately.  :-\

Wine and Cedega won't run TS2 since neither of them can emulate DirectX 9.0c yet or something like that.

One of the few reasons I'm not switching to Linux is that there's No Adobe Support, Shoddy Opera Support, "Ripping" of text, poor hardware support(Ubuntu can't detect the GMA950 correctly), among other things.  In addition, the only version of Linux that accepted my graphics chip correctly was OpenSUSE and possibly Fedora.  Kubuntu looked all stretched even though it siad 1280x800 in the configuration file.

I prefer KDE applications, and that is a reason why I'm not even considering Ubuntu.  Besides, it might work just as poorly as Kubuntu.

I had every reason to believe Dizzy was dead, given that the people I asked if they had seen Dizzy reported that he was dead, which matched observed evidence. Of course, there may have been some confusion over which Dizzy was dead. There are, apparently, multiple-Dizzys. Perhaps EA killed the wrong Dizzy.

I haven't had any success even trying to install TS2 with Wine. I put the blame firmly where it belongs: EA. EA = crap.

I prefer KDE myself, but the lack of stability in KDE makes it extremely frustrating. I have no idea what "Ripping" of text means. I go out of my way to check whether hardware is well supported by Linux before I even consider buying it.

Well, yes, but you deny having been dead at all. If you had admitted to being killed, but had gotten better, that would have also fit. However, apparently, you weren't killed at all. Which means some other Dizzy must have been killed.

Title: Re: Another shameless Ubuntu plug
Post by: Paperbladder on 2006 August 02, 00:33:38
When I used Opera 9 in Linux, when I scrolled down it made the text much harder to read, as if someone ripped a part of a letter and shifted it up.  This didn't happen with Seamonkey or Konqueror.  Also, in the last hour that I tried OpenSUSE, the Install/Uninstall Software text seemed to be ripped too.

I'm using a large amount of Intel parts in my laptop and I'm damn sure that it's similar to what quite a few newer laptops have too.  *buntu can't even get the god damn settings right on the LiveCD, and try to trick me that it's using the right settings by saying it's "1280x800" when I actually installed it.  I doubt EasyUbuntu or Automatix would have fixed anything nor did I even know about these when I installed 6.06.  These are things people need to freaking know without going to Ubuntu's forums.

Is Adobe crap just because Photoshop and Flash isn't supported?

Adobe isn't the company it used to be. I used to love using Photoshop, but now even Gimp is as good as old PS4.0 was. Of course, I remember when Photoshop was a *Mac* program that had to be ported to Windows.

What a lame excuse to avoid admitting you were wrong.
What a lame excuse to avoid admitting you are a stupid Ness. All these are known facts. We know that Dizzy commonly styles himself as "2" elsewhere, but number-names are forbidden here, and there is only one Dizzy here. When I started asking around about the whereabouts of Dizzy, he was reported dead. The reports were consistent with observed evidence, so I didn't conduct further inquiries. It is, however, possible that they were referring to one of the other Dizzys, and the pattern of murdering people would be consistent with EA's behaviors during TS1. So perhaps they whacked the wrong Dizzy.

No, no.  I freely admit to being a stupid Ness.
