Title: It feels so quiet in here...
Post by: BlueSoup on 2006 April 08, 02:29:14
...Like a ghost town.

So, the people who are managing to get onto the site (and may not even realize anything is wrong) aren't really talking, and I am just bored and want to talk to people lol.

I am on now that I put the line in my hosts file as Torkle said, but it looks very plain.  No buttons, no icons, just blue and black text on a white background.  It does indeed look like a ghost town.

Oh, I got it all back to normal-looking again.  In your hostsfile, did you remove the www. ?  Once I did that, it looks normal now.

The site look normal to me... same usual colors.

It is awfully quiet here... usually when I come during lunchtime there are many posts to read....

It's really quiet. Kinda' weird actually.

What's this problem thing? I know it says on the Newsbox that the site's currently under attack, but everything seems normal to me...

Post by: Taz on 2006 April 08, 02:40:05
I actually managed to get in no problem from work. Clicked on favourites and voila, Maty. All apparently normal, just eeriely quiet....

Post by: PlaidSquirrel on 2006 April 08, 02:42:35
I'm hanging around too. I was looking for something new to read and here it is. It was kind of lonely in here.

Thanks for the tip on fixing the appearance too!

*Well okay I tried the tip but it didn't work for me. It went back to page not found or whatever so I had to put it back.*

Well do you want to play cards?  :P

The DNS is being attacked at the registrar level for all of Pescado's DNSes (MATY, the chat, TW2002, and a couple of KludgeMush non-Sims related things).

It's unknown who's behind it, although a couple of people have been reported (anonymous people) and clearly it is directed at Pescado.

Post by: MissDoh on 2006 April 08, 02:52:14
I simply hate it when people do that!!  On Undernet awhile back (MIRC) it was like that too.

Why must people attack something that make others happy.

Post by: Lyall on 2006 April 08, 02:59:39
Oh, ok. Thanks. I think I get what the Newsbox means now. :D

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks its quiet in here

Thanks Blue.  I tried that, and it looks normal now.  Wonder why?

Title: Re: It feels so quiet in here...
Post by: Simlover on 2006 April 08, 03:31:24
Everything has looked normal here except no newsbox

Title: Re: It feels so quiet in here...
Post by: MissDoh on 2006 April 08, 03:33:07
ehh there is a newsbox, here is what is written in it:  "ALERT! ALERT!
Site currently under attack. DNS may go offline. Use IPs  216.32.95.35 in your hostsfile, or 140.109.232.69 for IRC. TW2002 at 140.109.11.203.
This is not a drill. Repeat, this is not a drill."

Even in event such like this.. Pescado have a sense of humour.

I think it's maybe not a good timezone for most of the members, often things go quiet around now. Wait and see I guess. :-\

Title: Re: It feels so quiet in here...
Post by: RainbowTigress on 2006 April 08, 05:19:17
I have a royal flush (is that right?)

I took out the "www." and the graphics came back, but now I'm having trouble clicking on links to this site and the "show new replies" link at the top.  I was having problems when I hit reply.  It said server not found.  So I went back and added a second line with the "www."  So I have one with and one without.  I will see how this works.

I went to laverwinkle sims to see if anybody else was having probs connecting to Maty and lo and behold it's under attack!!

Geez.....what some people will do eh?

Thank god torkle is a knowledgable dude/tte! I was having huge withdrawal symptoms without my daily dose.....that's bad isn't it?!  :-[

Hah! We need a meeting, an official MATY addicts meeting, I'll start

Hi, my name is witch and I'm a MATY addict.

Oh I say everyday I won't surf at work, but by morning tea that little niggle of curiosity has started, wonder what's happening on MATY? Feed the cat? I'll just check MATY, sorry cat.

Good to see everyone else here. ;)

True Simlover.  And a lot neater too ;)

MATY is an integral part of my housework avoidance plan ...  If this place doesn't liven up, I might actually be forced to - shudder - hang out the washing or something.

Sorry.

And I suppose I should go hang mine out before the kids (both adults now, mind you) start grumbling about having no clean clothes.

Title: Re: It feels so quiet in here...

You should make them do their own clothes!   :D  Then you'll have more "MATY time."

Title: Re: It feels so quiet in here...

They are baby Tawny Grassbirds, an Australian native that are about twice the size of a finch fully grown.

Title: Re: It feels so quiet in here...
Post by: RainbowTigress on 2006 April 08, 08:26:54
They look so tiny...their eyeballs are so big!  They aren't the prettiest things but they are still cute and I'm sure they just melt your heart.  But I thought they looked like hot wings at first.  :D

Title: Re: It feels so quiet in here...
Post by: Simlover on 2006 April 08, 08:33:36
Actually that is just colouring around their eyes (i'm still waiting for their eyes to open) they came in the day they hatched, their mum was dead nearby.  They are so funny when they just hatch because their skin is totally transparent.  So far they have gone 3 days and are still going strong which is good considering I would probably lose at least 1.

Awww, poor things.  I am sure they are in very good hands though with you for there adopted mom. :)  What is that little yellow stick for?  It looks like a thing Tupperware has to peel oranges.

Hm, a crazy idea maybe, but try clearing your temporary internet files as well. I couldn't get in at first, then I found out that I had misplaced the hosts file I d/led from laverwinkle! Then I found out I already had a hosts file (I had put the d/led one in c:\windows\system32\drivers folder, not c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) but I couldn't change it, because it's read only. A simple change and voila, here I am! I only added one line, without www. and the pages are aOK. I did clear the internet cache though, so maybe that helped too.

Wow, I finally made it to this site. When I heard this site was under DNS attack I quickly googled it and spent most of the night reading up on it.
Hmm , I bet it's some brat who's doing this, who apparently has nothing better to do with their pathetic life then create a huge problem. It has to be a kid. From the information I read up on it it says anyone(mostly kids) can do it with the proper tools.Of course it can also be an act of revenge from an adult of course..........

I hope JM finds out who did this and reports him/her/it to the FBI and ISP.One article I read says they handle this. They can get jail time, loss of their internet and pay huge fines. That seems right for the crime :)
He can  also try to find the the creep himself using Ingress filtering( I read up on that too) but that looks difficult. Of course he knows what to do , so I'll just shut up :)

Just in case if he wants the link to the article regarding  Network Ingress Filtering here's the link: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2267.html.
This looks good, might help him find who the culprit is.

ETA: On second thought this might be out dated information. It looked real good was I was reading it half awake last night.  It was written in 1998!So..ah.. nevermind?

I did that and I've not had any problems since.  Before, with the www, I didn't get graphics.  Without the www, I could not reach the site when clicking on links to threads and the show new replies link at the top.  WIth both, it seems to solve both situations for now.

What I would like to know is why some of us are having no problems (apart from no newsbox) and if it wasn't so damn quiet around here wouldn't be aware of the problem.  Blue you might like to let JM know about the bbs, i can post the total entry here if you like, it seems they are under attack from bots

Yeah well they probably don't have a Pescado on staff.

BTW I didn't have any trouble with the site at all yesterday, looks identical to normal and I didn't have to do anything to the hosts file or the Internet cache. Weird.

Man, I was so flipped out when I couldn't get into MATY. I was all, "OMG, I HAVE JUST STARTED PLAYING THE SIMS AGAIN AFTER A THREE MONTH BREAK AND SUDDENLY MATY GOES DOWN!?" Anyway, I ran to simlogical.com only to find out Inge had left ... at which point I decided it was all a VAST CONSPIRACY to remove all cool sims things from the internets ... but then I went to laverwinkle and everything was fine there.

*heaves sigh of relief*

Wow. This is crazy. I feel like we're all in a hidden bunker somewhere whispering in the dark.

Hiya all! *waves at MATY peeps* Missed you all - two days without MATY.  :'(  What a complete and utter pain in the rear this has been. Just so glad that putting two entries in the host file worked.

On the subject of the tosser/s who did this, I have some pincers I can put in the fire if some random torture would help?

If it weren't for the fact that a couple of people helped me I wouldn't be here at all.  I was going through withdrawals after one day!  I can't believe how quiet these boards and this site are!  (ps Thanks Data and Tunaisafish  :))

Everything still looks all wonky to me, but at least I can get in now, thanks to the laverwinkle site.

I'm not as stupid as I thought I was and was beginning to feel. I finally made it here! Yay!  I don't speak up much, but I sure was missing my reading. lol

Same here.  Until I was directed to the laverwinkles thread from necteres site, I was in a panic!  But with both entries in my host file, everything seems completely normal.  I hope all of this clears up soon without too much more mess and aggrivation.

Yea, me too... It's hard to find a good, lurk-worthy Sims site, like MATY, these days.

This is all pretty strange.  I never once had a problem getting to the site, and everything always looked normal.  It's crazy talk!

It worked for me at first, and then it didn't anymore the second day. You might want to write down the stuff in the newsbox just in case you need it later.

Not everyone can see the newsbox ella

Oh, sorry:

ALERT! ALERT!
Site currently under attack. DNS may go offline. Use IPs  216.32.95.35 in your hostsfile, or 140.109.232.69 for IRC. TW2002 at 140.109.11.203.
This is not a drill. Repeat, this is not a drill.

Whimper!  Three days of MATY deprivation--I've been staring at "server not found" messages all weekend, and only just now found out what the deal was.

I finally got my new PC, Sims 2 and all the EPs are all installed and patched, and I need MATY downloads--I need 'em bad.

It's such a relief to find out MATY is still here.

I agree, skandelouslala.  I was going through such utter withdrawal from (mostly) intelligent conversation and debate.  and the sarcasm.  I miss JM's sarcasm.

Close Call. This afternoon, I couldn't get on MATY. I editted my hostfiles and everything came back. MATY is like food. Instead of losing weight without it, I'll lose brain cells.

Thank goodness. I was also going through serious withdrawls, not being able to get on MATY. Then someone was kind enough to PM me on MTS2 and give a link to the IP so I was able to edit my hostfile (thanks Doompuppy!). It's a little strange, I haven't been here for too long, but I'm already hopelessly addicted.

I need a little help. I can't see the newsbox so I need to know what lines I put in my Host files.

Who is it? Inform me at once so I can have them banned. Is somebody spreading vile and subversive Ingeian propaganda? Do you believe someone to be in league with our enemies? Report them! And we'll give you a medal, and a free month and stuff.

Calm down Pescado. You don't want to pop a blood vessel. :P

I don't know who it is. With all controversey going on, Im easy to believe someone is around is working for the "enemy." Im thinking maybe Inge has an "Inside Man" involved. Do I still get a medal and a free month?  ;D :P

wait... isn't giving out your ip address not a good thing? Then they could attack that... which would be bad, in which case I'd have to slaughter people...

I kind of like it this way though, it keeps away a lot more of the sheep!

All websites have an IP address, to which the DNS resolves the text address you type into your browser.  That's what is broken.  That's why putting it in your hosts file fixes it, because your computer bypasses the DNS and uses the one it finds on your computer instead.  Anyone can find out what IP address a text address stands for.  Just search Google for IP DNS converter.

the only way i got in today was by clicking on a link at laverwinkle. the hostfile thing never worked and typing in the IP number dirctly into the browser worked only up to a point

text only though

still, i'm in and can read about the drama first hand. shame i have to go to work today really

Wow, 3 days with no MATY. I guess I didn't happen to surf the site at the time when the alert was posted in the message box or I would have been able to get here.

I almost resorted to thinking the site had been taken down, but I guess that would have only been half-correct. I knew JM would never leave us ( ::)), so I had a suspicion that the site was taken down forcibly.

/me sighes.

Why do morons have to resort to hacking and DoSing? It doesn't make sense. Nothing stays down on the Internet forever. What are they trying to prove?
