Title: Uni Life Thread
Post by: Skadi on 2013 March 09, 06:22:49
Uni Life:

The roommates feature is pretty cool. Until they all stand in your bedroom listening to some twat play guitar.

Bonfires are cool. You can throw a test tube in, it produced fireworks.

Kegstands.

You get Dare opportunities, including "Kiss a random sim". There is now an option to "kiss in the heat of the moment" which is available as soon as you've been introduced. This one left the sim with a "being creepy" social tone.

I like the text messaging option on the phones.

Not a bad expansion so far. I am waiting to see what is borked though.

Edited to add:

Didn't take long for a bork. Queue to the classroom door, took 30+ sim minutes to get it.

The roommates do at least seem to have better AI than Sims 2, but I was annoyed during the term I had a sim at Uni and friends started sharing a double bed with her until I moved the other bed in the room to another and locked the door.  Or basically roomies playing a shuffle game when it came to which bed they slept in.  It seems as though setting a bed owner means little, though perhaps we're supposed to assign every bed available.

I also noticed that whenever your sim isn't actively studying or attending class the performance meter decays (or at least it does for me).  It's probably intentional, though some of the flavor text makes it seem that you wouldn't suffer this so long as you actually attended every scheduled class.

I've noticed that too, but the decay is very slight compared to the boost you get from going to class, lectures, using your skill object, etc.  Have you noticed if the decay happens at night too, or only during active school hours?

Title: Re: Uni Life Thread
Post by: Nienor on 2013 March 09, 14:01:59
It's happening at night in my game.

Also, there appears to be no mechanism for dealing with broken/dirty appliances in dorms other than having the player's Sim fix them. By the time it bothered me enough to start on a round of cleaning and repairing, every single bathroom or electronic item was either broken or dirty. While I've never lived in student accommodations (and ours here are organised differently from US-style ones), I know that the dirt bit might be realistic. But I think that once the last toilet is clogged and all TV's and stereos are out, someone should notice.

According to EAxis, performance decay is intentional.

Title: Re: Uni Life Thread
Post by: LittleBear on 2013 March 09, 19:09:31
I was also annoyed about the dirty and broken stuff in my dorms.  I ended up hiring a maid and consider the cost as part of "tuition and fees".  After all, dorms are not free in real university (in the states, at least).  I used nraas debug to add the unbreakable upgrade to everything else.

I had random roomies sleeping in my sim's single bed! So annoying. So I assigned everyone a bed, locked all the doors according to each assigned bed and haven't had the issue since.  The only problem I noticed with locked doors is firemen.  I started a fire in one of the dorms and got a notice from the firefighters that they couldn't reach the flames.  They actually could, but weren't able to leave the room again until I unlocked the door.  *shrug*

The constantly broken/dirty situation in dorms is annoying, but I had a Sim in the technology track and constantly unclogging toilets or stopping up sinks helped bring his Handiness up. It'd be nice if there was an AM option to disable stuff from breaking in Dorms.

That sounds fairly realistic. Though in a real dorm they'd be very drunk too.

I have to ask though, does this expansion require Origin?

Title: Re: Uni Life Thread
Post by: Skadi on 2013 March 09, 21:25:10
The roomies in the frat house have red portraits almost constantly. Every now and then I take pity and "maxmotives" them so they can do stuff without falling asleep on the floor. They also have zero cooking skills and insist on burning everything.

I am doing the 12 credits a week option, there are 2 classes a day on Mon, Wed, Fri and a lecture on Tues and Thurs. I haven't really noticed it going down, since I have almost maxed out the meter and it is only Wed morning [before class]. Maybe the more classes you take, the less chance for serious decay. The downside is no real socialising.

I don't have origin installed. I loathe origin.

Title: Re: Uni Life Thread
Post by: Nienor on 2013 March 09, 21:37:55
Oh, the burning. Some other dorm inhabitant manages to set the stove on fire while my Sim is sleeping. The roommates assemble in the kitchen, screaming and stomping, and surprisingly actually manage to extinguish the fire. Then the fireman arrives, and who is fined for frivolously calling him when there is no fire? My Sim, who did not do anything. One could really create quite a bit of life-like drama with this one.

As for socialising, I solved that through group studying, or through levelling relevant skills with group activities as far as possible, which can also help with the social groups. For example, the "kicky ballg" [oops, says Freud] can be used for socialising, levelling the athletic skill, and for advancing with the Rebel faction all in one.

I save-quit the game while my sim was in class. Upon reloading all the sims that were attending that class, including mine, were standing outside the building skipping class. Tsk tsk.

As a funny bit though, when my sim went back in the building to resume attending class all of the other sims freaked out and had her in a thought bubble.

It sounds like we need to send a sim with high handiness skill and get things upgraded to unbreakable once and for all. And can we place a Bonehilda in dorms? That would be funny to see. From what I have heard changes made in the dorms are staying that way when other sims arrive later.  One person has even left cars there. And others have found that paintings done are staying there.

Sounds like another half-arsed, broken product from EA. Who would've thought?

Title: Re: Uni Life Thread
Post by: That Eighties Guy on 2013 March 11, 13:03:10
So far, I'm not particularly impressed. The campus is one of the most boring ass worlds I've ever seen from EA. It's essentially a square grid with buildings plopped down. The dorms are broken as all fuck with fires, floods and ten thousand piles of dirty clothes. Why are there so many supernatural sims on campus? Half of them are either fairies or wizards.

Really, the only thing that is positive is the ability to manually set which bed belongs to whom.

So this totally happened.

snip

I had my sim take a smart phone picture with one of the sorority girls, queued up some romantic interactions, and when I next looked back she had regenerated into a clone of my sim.

Seems I got the same situation when I took a romantic photo with the wife.

It's not going away, though. Not even resetsim seems to return them to normal. I had to revert to an older save.

Title: Re: Uni Life Thread
Post by: Roobs on 2013 March 11, 16:53:25
I managed to fix the problem with editsim. As soon as it loaded she reverted to her old appearance, so I just accepted the "changes" and everything was alright again. Very annoying though.

Wasn't too impressed when I sent my sim back to uni for the next term. The game reassigned all the role NPCs, so former roommates became mixologists and cashiers, and a barista became my sim's new professor. One of the pre-made professors ended up taking over the coffee shop.

Title: Re: Uni Life Thread
Post by: HomeschooledByTards on 2013 March 11, 20:24:00
I like the supernatural and celebrity sims. They provide color and variety to the neighborhood without my having to create it. I also like the square grid layout of the streets. I may be the only one who hates EA's habit of using non-straight roads in their hoods. It makes it difficult to add in new venues, I am a bit OCD and like to have my lots sit exactly parallel to the roads.

I don't like the reassignment of NPC sims between terms, hopefully Pes can squash that. If I ever get a second generation grown up enough to go to uni I'm going to be pissed if they have the same classmates as their parents.

ETA: Is it just that I haven't been playing in neighborhoods with lots of residents or has the attraction system had a huge boost? Everywhere my gal goes she finds at least one other sim super attractive. Her constant flirtation has earned her a dirtbag reputation and cost her a very hot boyfriend. (No, there wasn't any interference from my end, why do you ask? ;))

Title: Re: Uni Life Thread
Post by: Skadi on 2013 March 11, 20:59:33
The only time I don't get the "attractive person" moodlet is when they are of the non-preferred gender. It would appear that all my sims are easy.

Title: Re: Uni Life Thread
Post by: Nienor on 2013 March 11, 21:06:37
It's not just the job assignment that's wonky. My Sim was chatting up another student in the entrance hall of a building and asked about his major. They moved on to the upper floor, and I saw that I could still/again ask for the major. Apparently, the other student had managed to change majors in the time it took to move up a floor, and he still graduated at the same time as my Sim.

Title: Re: Uni Life Thread
Post by: daisylee on 2013 March 11, 21:26:40
I like the world and like that EA did not make way too much of it unroutable as usually done. I have already placed about 10 more lots including nuking the drive in screen and building, and placing a festival lot in that area. The straight roads made it easy to place lots along the water which I like as they will have a good view. I can build some bars, have added a salon already, and a consignment shop, the theatre, and plan to build quite a few new places for the sims to go while there.

I haven't tried Uni yet, but the same thing happens at the school in regular worlds if there are more than about 10 children and teens in the hood.

If you are looking at a different spot in the world that is sufficiently far enough away, the game must consider the school out of sight and won't try to actually route the sims through the door. Instead students just magically pop into the rabbithole and start classes at the correct time. I'm not sure exactly how far away you have to be, but halfway across town seems to work.

I liked that too.  Seems like it just randomly assigns supernatural and celebrity status to the pool of students based on what expansions are available.  Seems right that a university would be a huge mix of strange and interesting people.

Does anyone have a problem with some of the community lots in the university world having the name  "Community Lot" and being categorized as "No Visitors Allowed?" Also, some of the drinks I order from the barista, my sim pays for it, grabs it, and then does the motion like they are putting it in their pocket. The thing is, it doesn't go into their inventory, it just disappears. So, I pay for a drink, but I don't actually get to drink it.

Yes, I've had this problem.  It only happens sometimes, but when it happens, the sim can order 5 things in a row and it will happen every time.

Is there any way to fix this problem I had 2 sims finish their degrees in university but only one of them got a diploma the other one stood in front of the door. I had to reset her and have them both drop out of the university. So I am assuming that she finished her degree in Fine Arts because her credits are still all there. But I need to know how I can make sure she finished or how I can get her diploma. Or if its even possible now that they are both home.

The "attractive" message box is popping up far too often. Every single sim I meet (and sometimes sims I haven't even met in the first place that are across town) will proclaim that he/she wants to get to know them better. Bam, attractive moodlet. Suddenly my sim is flirting away with his newfound love, even as he's found about ten of them in the last two minutes of playing.

And put down the fucking smartphone, dipshit.

You mean that they have their degrees in Degree History tab but didn't get the new trait? I had a similar problem, where the game didn't let most students enter the graduation ceremony, including mine, and she returned home without getting the trait. Anyway, yes, you can fix it. Either get the Honorary Degree LTR or type this in console: setconfig debuginteractions true , then ctrl-shift click on her and find the University Degree (I think) option, there you will be able to choose the appropriate degree and grade.

Yes they have their degree but she doesn't have the diploma or the extra trait for graduating because she was the one that stood at the door until 10:30 when I reset her. Ok that cheat didn't work how do I make it work? If I am suppose to be using the awesome mod to this then will someone explain how to do it. I don't use that mod but I do have it to fix the problem but I am completely lost how to use it to fix this.

I tried that it doesn't give me any option except for all of Twallans mods. But I just gave up on trying to fix it because I think I messed it up using MC to reset the sim instead of using the cheat console. I appreciate the suggestions.

Try NRaas Debug Enabler.  That should unlock the debug interactions upon shift clicking on the sim.

I've got five specific errors/annoyances that I'm just going to throw out there.

1. When returning to Uni for a second term, a notification for the Meet and Greet happens, but when your Sim autonomously tries to attend it, there's a jump bug and the interaction cancels. It still shows up on the map as an event, but trying to Attend manually just cancels out. If you send the Sim to the building, none of the Meet and Greet tables are there. It makes sense not to have a Meet and Greet after the Sim has already been to Uni Town once, but it would be nice if the notifications, etc. disappeared.

2. Using the same Sim, I had to try three different times to get him to graduate and go home without error. This issue has been widely reported, and Google Fu adequately illustrates what happens when it borks. For me, I have fixed the problem by A) Not adding a new trait, and/or B) not inviting anyone to graduation. I'm not sure which one fixed it, or whether either of them fixed it, but not doing those two things resulted in a successful graduation and trip home.

3. Sims intermittently skip class. I have not been able to figure out why. Clicking "Attend Class" results in a popup that it's not your class time, even thought the Uni tab shows that you're "Missing Class!"

4. Directing a Sim to upgrade the keg to "Auto-Refill" does not register as one of the ten unique upgrades required for the Tinkerer Skill Challenge.

5. Jesus H. Christ, ENOUGH WITH PLAYING THE DAMN GUITARS. I think I spend the majority of a Sim's party attendance clicking "Take a Break from Playing" on other Sims. I can of course seek out a no autonomous mod for this, but I don't necessarily want it to NEVER happen for non-controlled Sims.

According to Crinrict's blog (read it first next EP, saves you a lot of headaches) inviting people to the graduation has almost a 100% chance of making it glitch. This has been reported at least a week ago. I keep her blog bookmarked because she's the quickest to keep track of bugs and glitches with every new EP or other TS3 releases.

Has anyone tried sending a second generation to University?  I sent the daughter of one of my sims and when she arrived her father had de-aged from elder to a teen in high school in the relationship panel.  The sim also jumped back to her dorm when I sent her to the meet and greet, and it was so glitchy in general that I quit without saving.  Not sure if this is due to PEBKAC or EA.

My sim recently "got caught cheating" on her final exam, except she wasn't.

She didn't make a cheat sheet or look for test answers before the exam.   I certainly didn't select the cheat tone from the drop-down menu during the exam.  So far those are the only ways I know of to cheat.  She didn't talk to anyone either, so if there's a way to cheat through socialization, it's ruled out.

She got booted from the building, has the cheated moodlet and lost all of her academic progress.  Super annoying.

Is anyone else having bed assignment problems?

I built a Uni house and enabled roommates. I assigned them all beds. A couple of nights later, I realized that one roommate (we'll call her Jane Doe) was up at three in the morning and exhausted, and her bed was available. I clicked on the bed and the option "Sleep in Jane's Bed" was there. I decided to assign it to her again anyway (I did not Reset it; I clicked "Assign" or its equivalent in the pie menu). In the menu, I assigned the bed to Jane. A pop-up said something along the lines of, "Are you sure you want to assign this bed to Jane Doe? If you do, the Sim you previously assigned it to, Jane Doe, won't be assigned to it anymore."

In essence, there is something happening to the Sim/Bed relationship, where one is no longer recognizing the other.

I've had that with my active sim, after a script error that also removed a locked Supreme Commander setting (the one where one gets the "Requeue" panel). I suspect it's mainly the Sim having a hiccup, and the bed is a secondary consequence of whatever happened to the Sim that causes the game to think it's a different person from who it originally was.

Is anyone else having problems with the Uni Library?

First I noticed that raindrops were splashing inside the building.  Then I placed a chessboard and couldn't use it because the "snow was too deep".  No other environmental effects seemed to be happening though, no visible breath, no puddles and no snow accumulation.  So I messed around (a lot) with the building and after I managed to delete the roof and replace it, the issues went away.

But in play testing the rebuilt library I now have sims pulling out the business presentation object thingy and giving presentations ALL THE TIME.  Like 8 different sims on the lot going at once.  I directed my sim to leave the lot, but all she wants to do is watch the presentations, and I keep autonomy set to low.  I finally got her out of there, and I'm working on it using twallan's mastercontroller to reset the lot, but so far I'm just confused.

PS. To rum nate: I found that if you click on the barista him/herself, instead of the counter, things always work how they're supposed to.
PPS. SJActress: Yes, not just in the Uni world either.  My sim at home, say Jim, will click on his own assigned bed and get "Sleep in Jim's bed".

I don't have University, but I get same thing.  Sim Rho="sleep in Rho's bed"

I had the bed thing happen to after a "reset everything" by using MC. I simply reset the bed assignment and directed each sim to their respective beds. So far I haven't had this problem again.

Something weird happens to one of my sims though. I noticed that if she has to go to classes and game prompts the action in her queue, her needs will remain static until after she has attended classes. I first noticed when she went to class hungry when she only just finished eating. She used to have the after school activity glitch though so maybe these two things are connected? I did fix that before she went to uni though so I have no clue what to think.

That's not what I'm saying. It's a roommate I don't control, so I was using, say, Jim, to click on Jane's bed to check and make sure it was assigned to Jane, and it was. However, upon re-assigning it to Jane, the game seems to think that "Jane" and "Jane" are two different people, as opposed to the same one, which is why Jane wasn't sleeping in her available bed.

I noticed that if she has to go to classes and game prompts the action in her queue, her needs will remain static until after she has attended classes.

I'm pretty sure this is intended behavior, so Sims don't pee themselves or starve to death during lectures. I'm not sure why she'd still be hungry after finishing eating, though.

I think something the game does, glitches either the sim, the bed or both. This problem first arose when sims would use Simport to go to someone else's game. Upon return, their beds wouldn't recognise the sims as the same person anymore. Not sure what action on the Uni campus would have the same effect though.

Maybe it is, although I have my doubts. The problem is that her needs go static as soon as the icon pops up in her queue. So no matter what I had queued up at the time, it won't have any effect. Let's say she had to eat, use the toilet and shower. She just finished eating and is on her way to the toilet. The class icon pops up. She will go to the toilet and shower but her bladder will not empty and her hygiene bar won't go up. Let's say the classes icon pops up while she's eating. Then her hunger bar won't fill either. As far as I know this only affects this particular sim too.

So I basically have to wake her up extra early and push her to fill her needs bar before the the game prompts her to go to class. i don't recall ever having this problem with her older brother.

Played University for the first time today and ran into the same problem. I had two active sims and it happened for both of them, when the time to go to class came, all their motives froze. I cancelled the "go to class" interaction for one of them and tried to have him eat again but he still wouldn't gain hunger. I even tried to move his hunger motive up with testingcheats enabled but I couldn't. I could only drag motives up/down again after the class was over, at 10 am.

Yep. Seems to be standard behaviour with the locked motives. I took two Sims through Uni successfully and then when one of those Sims and her new husband tried to go back (he was going to finish his first degree, she was going to start her third) the game would crashe before Uni could load. Now I simply cheat them a degree - there is nothing about the campus that I am going to miss all that much - and it makes it a lot easier to keep the neighbourhood going when you play primarily one family but wish to keep their contemporaries actually contemporary.

I finally got around to installing Uni, and looked around the campus a little.

My first impression is that whoever designed the dorms must not have ever seen an actual college dormatory.  They'd be more appropriate as greek houses.  The dorm in the middle of campus fits in, so I think I'll convert it into a student lounge with a bar, band stage, Showtime stage, and laundry.  As for the two far corner dorms, I'll either gut the interiors and rebuild, or just bulldoze and replace.

Speaking of greek houses, I do like the Fraternity and Sorority houses, but both are decorated much too expensively.  I'll have to redecorate using mismatched Kewian-Based Substitutes for the proper student shabby look.

This is an almost daily occurrence in my dorms.  I'd move sim-Trepie out if he wasn't such a fire loving daredevil.

My daughter is experiencing some glitch where her sim went back to University, has been there a week and no classes have started. Anyone else have this happen?

Is it my imagination or does the sim who issues a trivia challenge always lose?

Did she add anything new to the game? When I had this problem (classes never started) it was a mod causing it.

I've added some clothes, hair and various custom content but the only mod I have is Awesome Mod.

I don't even know what's going on in my game.

Somehow a Sim ended up hovering in empty space in midair on the second floor about two floor tiles outside of one of the dorm bathrooms. She spontaneously caught on fire there and because the fireman and no other Sim could reach her she died. I got it on video, but I'm sort of a technocretin and don't know where the video files caught ingame go so I can't upload it to YouTube. Then the butler I hired to keep the dorm clean somehow got stuck in the fireplace and I didn't notice until she starved to death. I should have noticed that the place was getting a bit dirty, but I guess I'm not that observant.

Sims just keep seeming to end up in places where they should not seem to be able to route to. But I have no idea why that one Sim caught on fire when she routed outside upstairs. Thankfully nothing has happened to the Sim I've been playing.

My Sim seems to be really bad luck around the dorm because another of his dorm mates just died. He got electrocuted outside during a storm. I guess he must have been struck by lightning.

My Sim was asleep in bed.

There's no graveyard in the University town to send these headstones to, so the ghosts keep haunting the dorm. They're a bit annoying.
