Title: Critical Fix: Juggling/Portal Fix 2
Post by: crammyboy on 2005 December 04, 17:18:39
(http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/terror/red.gif)

Fixes a (Maybe not so) rare problem with juggling that would cause the random deletion of objects including portals. Any form of juggling will enter this code when juggling has finished, but the portion of the code with the problem only occurs under certain conditions.

This code completely bypasses the removal code, because I have yet to find anything being deleted that was related to juggling.

Install into downloads.

This fix is for nightlife, although it may exist in previous versions or work correctly in previous versions.

Includes the portal monitor for safety purposes.

GAH ~ you'd think Maxis would have fixed something like that in the patch!

Thank you for coming to the rescue.

I don't think I have this problem in my game.  Should I install it anyway?

Since the act of juggling with anything in the game could potentially cause the deletion of something, I would say that you do have the problem.

This is just totally unbelievable.  Thanks for coming to the rescue once again, Crammyboy.

Good to know. Fortunately, I never juggle, but good to have.

I don't juggle either.  But these new Pleasure sims like to juggle, and occasionally you'll find a playful sim low on fun juggling bottles from the fridge or juggling espresso cups.  So this is definitely good to have just to stop those random deletions.  It's rather scary.  What else besides portals can get deleted that could cause problems?

Title: Re: Critical Fix: Juggling/Portal Fix 2
Post by: crammyboy on 2005 December 05, 03:53:13
Basically anything can be deleted. The two I have had so far are the car service portal and a toilet cleaning brush. I have no explanation as to what maxis was thinking with this code.

Oh, wow, is that what happens? I had the dreaded "Warning! Portals have been accidentally deleted. Please exit the lot without saving" message just yesterday, and I could have cried. I had gotten sim me married and pregnant, and hadn't bothered to save the game after doing so. I figured it was gardener-related, since any portal deletion information I could dig up pertained to that. But now that I've read this thread, I realize the message popped up immediately after this little photo shoot:

I had just made them stop juggling when I got the message. I had no idea juggling was so dangerous! Sheesh!  So they were actually juggling portals, then? LOL. Okay, I admit I don't get how this works, but I am definitely installing this. Thanks for yet another fix.

That's just it.  Things like this that are totally unrelated.  Just like the books that the children were being read to out of causing deleted portals.  What will it be next time???  Where will it stop?  If I didn't love this game so much, I would have thrown it out a long time ago because of all these stupid bugs.  I'm just grateful for all these guys and gals who keep finding the holes and plugging them up so I can keep my Sims obsession going strong.

For a second there I thought I didn't read that right. Juggling? You've got to be kidding. Thank you CB for finding fixes for things I didn't even know could get broken by performing totally unrelated actions.

There was a problem with portals in Uni as well, I don't remember completely what that entailed, but I know that you were the one who came to the rescue then too. I think I saw that on MTS2. I have to go back and try to find that one, I'm going to read up on these damn portals.

It's the loo brush that amazes me!  What next - the stove?  If something randomly disappears from the house, I guess we should just thank heavens it wasn't a portal!  I was speculating a while back that there was some other rubbish coding in there deleting portals that we just hadn't recognised yet.  I'm feeling prescient at the moment - though old and suspicious is more like it....

I think I fell over this particular problem yesterday because I did have my first ever portal problem and someone had been juggling.  I guess we tell people the portal monitor is a must have and ask everyone to make a note of what they were doing and post if they suspect other actions caused a problem.

Please confirm that it is juggling that is dangerous in itself, not cancelling juggling.  Yes I know that's what you said, but I was expecting it to be cancelling juggling and misread it the first 3 times through.  Others might too.

After installing the nightlife patch I took out your previous portal fix but left the monitor in.   (Thinking that the patch was supposed to have fixed that bug.)  Well,  first house I went to after I played a while,  the portal deletion warning popped up.   I don't remember if anyone had been juggling at the time.   I put your previous fix right back in assuming that the patch had not fixed it after all.   Hasn't happened again.  Yet.    That particular household is a large one with lots of kids.  Always someone leaving books laying around so I am frequently having them pick up books.  Don't think I have ever instructed anyone to juggle but have had them do it autonomously  and have also had them do it because I had clicked juggling when intending to click whatever is next to it on refrigerator.   When I first installed your previous fix I had about a dozen homes in Pleasantview that had a missing portal.   Always the one that allowed service vehicles to arrive.  ]

So DID the patch fix the first problem you identified? Or not?  I am definintly putting this fix in also but afraid to take out the other without being positive it's not still needed.

Title: Re: Critical Fix: Juggling/Portal Fix 2
Post by: crammyboy on 2005 December 07, 01:26:39
The patch did fix the problem with the books. They changed the way that the thought and speach bubble objects were used so that nothing needed to be deleted.  The problem you initially had may have been this one. The book problem was more likely to delete portals because the values picked in error were usually very low (1 or 2 I think).  This one is more likely to cause a lot of different errors.

It is the cleanup code at the end of juggling that is faulty. Why would you think it was cancelling juggling? The word "Cancel" does not even appear in the first post.
This code is always run when juggling is finished.  The problem part of the code will run under certain conditions.

I hate it when my sims juggle.   How undignified for a grown peson to be juggling.

I wish we could get a fix to stop them from ever juggling,  like the one we got for them playing in the bathtub, also very undignified and unproper behavior for a grownup.    ;D

Cathy, are you clicking on the paperclip or the url?  I've just tried it and it's working perfectly.  If you are clicking in the right place and still get these messages, it may be worth refreshing.  Sometimes I've noticed that when the net is very busy, it takes too long for something to load, and you get the message you got, but refreshing sometimes helps,

Also, if you still can't download, you could try to right click and then click on Save Target as.

Spladoum, is it any bookcase, or maybe just one that hasn't been updated?

I was playing in windowed mode and stepped away from the game for a few minutes, and came back to find that a Sim was reading from a book that had been left out, and the portals were deleting like mad!  I have both this fix and the official NL patch installed.  Anyone else had a similar problem?  I think that I'm going to throw out these people's bookshelf.  :-\

If that was a cloned bookshelf from somewhere, then it could contain the original error. You should inform the creator who should advise everyone that the problem exists.

I just downloaded this to prevent this from happening again because I had a missing portal so I deleted the house.

what I need to know is I also installed your portal fix from MTS2 for NL.   Should I have both of them installed version one and two or only the one here?

the way I understand from what I am reading here is the version2 only fixes the portal if it is messed up from juggling or does it just add juggling to the other things that you fixed in version 1?

i am sorry but I don't know exactly how  this works?  does it automatically tell me if I have a messed up portal or do I have to type something in the cheat box?

           thank you.

You don't need portal fix 1 if you have the nightlife or university patch installed. You will need this fix to stop portal deletion from juggling. The portal monitor will let you know if a portal has been deleted, although with this fix installed it shouldn't happen.

So that's what caused the mailbox to vanish into thin air. I thought I was going bonkers. One second it was there, the next- gone. I have three pleasure sims in that household. I ending up moving them out, since the lot was undersized anyway. Am downloading this now.

Lemme get this straight.

EVERY TIME you juggle, the game randomly implodes one object?  Great, just great!  I realized that if the game is eating objects when you juggle, what if it randomly selects Pollination Technition and Mrs. Crumplebottom?  I can only imagine how big the fiery ball visible from space would be.  D'you think that that could even happen?  That could become as big a problem as the Love Potion 5.1 dissaperating sims.

Title: Re: Critical Fix: Juggling/Portal Fix 2

Well, did you really expect Maxis to actually test the EP thoroughly before they marketed it?  They could learn a lot from modders like JM, TJ and CB who spend a lot of time testing anything they make before they offer it to us!  (And they aren't charging us anything!)

It only deletes things from the lot. So if Mrs Crumplbottom is on the lot and gets zapped, the character data will remain intact. It only really becomes a problem when something that is hard to replace is zapped. Portals being one of those things.

There's a "Put Your Books Away" hack that might be worth installing in case the bookcase problem returns!  I suppose a No Autonomous Juggling hack would be a good idea, too - just in case!  GRRR!  Why do we players have to keep on sorting out THEIR mistakes!

It's just a good thing they're in the virtual business field, and not an RL one or we'd have jumbo-jets dropping out of the sky or ocean liners doing a Titanic every five minutes!

Considering that their stuff currently malfunctions before it is even available in stores, if they were in the business of making planes, one of them would have crashed into their office.

But that would assume that Maxis would actually test the plane by flying it, rather than just sitting in the cockpit making plane noises.

Title: Re: Critical Fix: Juggling/Portal Fix 2
Post by: ZephyrZodiac on 2006 May 22, 03:15:24
I don't think one should make any assumptions where Maxis is concerned, until the evidence is there to base them on!  Oh, one maybe - one could assume they are making money hand over fist which is why they're in such a hurry to get the next imperfect product out on the shelves!  But they parodied themselves well with the robots - one of my student entrepreneurs had just built on of the gardening robots for the flowerbeds in front of his shop, when it suddenly started to malfunction and water the paving slabs and treble water the plants, so Jimmy Cash and his girlfriend spent hours mopping up, since the staff had been sent home!  Then, when they got back to their house on campus, the same thing happened with the one they had at home!  And unless you check, half the darn toy robots are broken before they even reach the customer, and consequently your sims lose money for each one that is sold for half price - and that's the only difference!  The only people who get sims games that work well are people who wait until an omnibus edition is released at half the price the original purchasers paid - now we dedicated simmers should get a reduction for all the product testing we do!

But I wonder if juggling explains why in a brand new lot that the sims hadn't been in more than five sim minutes, a lot of the furniture just began to disappear!  Maxis as well as custom, so it wasn't a problem related to CC.  Luckily, saving the lot seemed to prevent the rest of it from going too!

It would depend on when the bookcase was cloned and whether it includes the semi-globals.

Yes, I did read that, but I couldn't find any of the things that you said to look for, so I suppose mostly I'm safe, and the only way to be sure is to try them.  But anything made with NL and OFB installed should automatically be OK?  And basically, if they don't have the College options, they were probably made in the base game and may have the problem?

Any (relatively) easy way to self-fix bookcases in SimPE? I'm about at the point where I'd already like to look up how to swap the back end of some of the custom beds I've got that were cloned from criminally cheap beds with the back end of a bed that is actually worth using. Would the same thing work for a bookcase?

Title: Re: Critical Fix: Juggling/Portal Fix 2
Post by: ZephyrZodiac on 2006 June 09, 17:08:41
Must admit it annoys me how some beds are cloned from an expensive one and then made cheap, and a lot of people do it!  It's very useful, of course, but rather defeats the object of sims having to work to get better stuff!

Back to the point, it would be useful if there were a fairly simple way to fix the problem, as Akotonbo suggests, as I have some favourite bookcases that I'm rather afraid to use at the moment in case of problems, and since there are so few in the game that don't look cheap and nasty I rather miss tham.

I don't mind paying the real price for a higher quality bed. What I do mind is beautiful beds that were cloned from the cheapest bed and thus are barely more useful to Sims than sleeping on the floor. (Or those cooktop hobs that are cloned from the cheapest stove! What use is that?)

I'm beginning to think that the people who use almost entirely Maxis objects and recolors have the right idea. I could cut out almost everything except the purely decorative stuff...

I'm not giving up the mirrored version of that Nouveau bookcase, though, so I suppose I'd better check the code and see if it needs fixing. (It's boblishman's, if I remember right, so hopefully he'd fix it if it has an issue.)

I like Windkeeper's small version of the expensive bookcase, but since I no longer sub to TSR2, unless it was already OK, I don't like to use it!  And some of Shoukeir's bookcases are beautiful too.

I agree with what you say about beds cloned from cheap ones, and then very often set at a high price - and sometimes the maker actually plays around with the code to try and make it better and merely changes the info which you get when you click on the bed in the menu.  Why on earth they didn't use the expensive bed to begin with has me beat!

If you can't find a BHAV called "Read - Loop Reading" in the package, then you are not going to have the problem.  Most bookcases will just be a replacement mesh, so the semi-globals will not have been included and there will not be a problem.

Well, I couldn't find it in any I looked at, but thought maybe I wasn't looking hard enough!  We could do, really, with a list of ones that people find with a problem, or alternatively, a list of ones we find that are OK.

I have just installed this fix.

Could you please clarify a point for me.

If a service person arrives, and a portal gets deleted, does it then refuse to allow the service sims to leave when their job is done?

In other words is this related to nannies getting stuck on lots?

I have read all the posts in this thread and cannot find the answer to this.

It should no longer be needed in current games if you've patched: AFAIK all known random deletion bugs have been squashed now. You can keep the portal monitor around to be safe though. It won't prevent any future problems but will alert you if it happens so you know not to save.

Nannies getting stuck may be caused by a deleted portal, but there are usually other causes. Nannies are severely broken, although since OFB/FFS patch 2 most issues seem resolved.

A deleted portal usually manifects itself in service personnel or the carpool not APPEARING.

Jordi explained it all, but I thought it might help if I put it another way and added a bit about cleaning up existing problems.

I have just installed this fix.
You don't need this fix if you have patched NL or added OFB. EA put the fix in the game.  Whoever fixed it - the fix prevents future problems.  It doesn't clear up the mess from old problems.  It doesn't put missing portals back for you.

If a service person arrives, and a portal gets deleted, does it then refuse to allow the service sims to leave when their job is done?
Yes - they may turn invisible, but they all hang around on the lot until you get rid of them with the lotdebugger or whatever.

In other words is this related to nannies getting stuck on lots?
A missing portal will give you stuck nannies, but apparently nannies get stuck for other reasons (didn't know that myself Ta Jordi)
The fix will not get rid of your stuck nannies.

Put the portal detector in your game.  If a lot is missing a portal, the detector will give you a message telling you so.  You can then either bulldoze the lot or add a portal back.  There's a thread on MTS about how to do that.  Hope the links are still good..

To get rid of stuck NPC's download Pescados ffslotdebugger from the directors cut.  Put the debugger on the lot (buy, misc, misc) and wait till the your sims are all asleep.  Click on the debugger and get rid of all the offworlders.
