Title: AwesomeMod Updater (v2.8.3 - Updated 2013-10-16)
Post by: basbas on 2010 August 07, 11:41:44
AwesomeMod Updater
Slightly based on darkorical's and CaptaiNemo's versions (http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,15843.0.html).

This batch file automatically updates AwesomeMod (and other MATY TS3 hacks, if in use) when you start your game. That is, when you change your shortcut to point to this batch file.

Features
  • It deletes scriptCache.package if necessary
  • It also updates 3booter, FPS Limiter, RuleOf6, NoGreenHair and StrayGnomeFix and puts them into the right folder
  • It's user friendly. If something goes wrong, it displays the user an error code and error message
  • You can place the file wherever you want
  • It notifies the user when an update is available
  • It automatically determines whether the user needs the stable or test AwesomeMod version
  • It is able to automatically install AwesomeMod if necessary
  • Everything is automated!

Windows only!
Please note it only works with the 'new' (post-Ambitions) way (http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Installing_Sims_3_Package_Files/Setup_and_Files) of installing custom content in package format.

What does it do
Step 1: It checks for updates to itself and prompts the user if an update is available.
Step 2: It reads your The Sims 3 directory from the registry.
Step 3: It creates a new folder inside My Documents, called "AwesomeMod Updater". The .zip files will be stored here.
Step 4: It checks if AwesomeMod is compatible with your current game version.
Step 5: It downloads the files if newer versions are available.
Step 6: It searches for awesome.package, ruleof6.package, nogreenhair.package, and straygnomefix.package somewhere in Documents\Electronic Arts\ and replaces them with the newly downloaded ones.
Step 7: It moves 3booter and FPS Limiter to the base game folder.
Step 8: It starts 3booter.

Easy installer
You can use this as an easy installer for 3booter and FPS Limiter. It can also install AwesomeMod if you don't have it yet.
Please note that the updater does not install RuleOf6, NoGreenHair and StrayGnomeFix if you don't already have them in your Mods folder.

Q: Why would I use 3booter and/or FPS Limiter?
A: There's definitely no harm at all in using 3booter or FPS Limiter. In fact:
If the game crashes within 30 seconds of an attempted start, 3booter will kick it in the taco.
and, the most important part:
FAILURE TO DO THIS CAN RESULT IN YOUR VERY EXPENSIVE NEW VIDEO CARD BECOMING A VERY EXPENSIVE LUMP OF FUSED HARDWARE!

Download (v2.8.3.196) (http://bit.ly/14CElib)

Old versions
Please note that old versions don't include wget.exe and unzip.exe. Get them from the latest version's .zip file.
Old versions might not be compatible with the current way of installing things or even mess things up. Use them at your own risk.

Thanks for this.  I installed it and edited the bat file (as my awesome.package is stored in Mods/Awesome folder and it works like a dream.

I had been using the old one that checked if a new version was available before trying to grab it. I did modify the batch file to look for the files in the new directory under My Document and to also delete the cache files every time before installing. Still I will grab this one as it's more of an all in one solution and is being updated.

It also seems a lot more tard noob friendly so hopefully we can beat them with sticks gently suggest they use this tool to avoid 'ZOMG GAM SEZ ITZ XPRED WUT DO i DO???1111111eleventyone' posts

Yeah, mine is too. I also read about others who store it there. Will be included in v1.3.

I got an Error code 11 and need to edit the .bat file because I have everything installed on an external drive - G: Program Files (x86)

I  know I need to replace all %ProgramFiles% to point to the directory where I have the base game and extras  installed but I don't know the correct command. I've tried using G: and (G) but it's not working. AM works great and I've never had a problem with it. I just got the *will expire* notice and would like to use the updater.

Any help would be appreciated.

Open the batch file with Notepad, click Edit > Replace and fill in the fields like this:

Click "Replace all" and save the file. Let me know if it works.

Who me? And I stand by my statement - the only acceptable place for poor english/spelling is when you're forcing a word/spelling into a place it wouldn't normally fit Poets have been doing it for centuries and I thought the acronym FOCUS was a perfect example of this. Lazyness alone does not justify leaving letters out.

This is where I would usually make a disparaging comment about Americans being unable to spell Neighbourhood and colour correctly.

Updated to v1.5
The updater is hyper-automatic now. It searches for awesome.package and replaces it with the new one.
I had to change the storage folder. It is now: "Documents\AwesomeMod Updater Revived" instead of "Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Updater". The updater will delete the old folder before creating the new one.

If HKLM\Software\Sims\The Sims 3 World Adventures also exists, it doesn't make a difference and it should work.
If it doesn't exist, post it here and I'll fix it.

No the  "HKLM\Software\Sims\ " path does not exist on my computer at all they are all under HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Electronic Arts\Sims (version name ie 3, World Adventures, etc)" path so when I run the tool it says the folder cannot be found but it stilll continues with the rest of the program.  In fact the 'strange' way it seems to be confused me when I was trying to find the codes for my games to reinstall them and they were not where all the help pages I tried looking up said they would be, it was a stroke of luck that I found a reference to the Wow6432 folder.  I am not that computer savvy so I dont know if I would be safe in copying the files and creating a HKLM\Software\Sims file

I didn't know that 64-bit systems store the 32-bit registry values there. I'll add a check for it.

EDIT: It should work now. Please report back.

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but:

You say the update only works for Windows.  I have a Mac, tried to launch the game today and it told me I had an outdated version of the mod.  I came here and saw the update.  I'm unable to launch the game (it goes through the loading screen and everything, shows the "out of date" message, then quits).  Do I just have to do without the mod - uninstall it and move on?

Thanks.

For fuck sake, go and download the new AM and put it in your game, replacing the old one.  This thread isn't about an AM update, it is for something else.

I came here because of this in the topic title:  Updated 08/25/2010)  because that's the exact date referenced on my game.  I'm sorry if I offended you by asking the question in the wrong place, but I don't have time to go through pages of people asking simple questions being bitched at by others.  You certainly don't owe me anything but it looks to me like the typical response to a 'n00b' question is nothing but curses and attitude, no help whatsoever.  This makes me think that this mod is not worth my time - whatever enhancements it brings to gameplay aren't worth being lashed out at over the internet for asking a question.  I suppose no one's making any real salary off of this so I guess I shouldn't expect good technical help, right?  Of course if everyone had that attitude the world would be even shittier than it is already.

TL;DR:  fuck off.

If you bothered to read the initial post, you would have realised this thread applies to, and is about, a program which allows windows users to automatically update and install a new version of AM whenever it is updated.

You downloaded AM before, so go and fucking download it again, it hasn't moved from where it was last time, how hard is that?

v1.6awetest
This Updater version updates your AwesomeMod to its test version instead of the normal version. This is necessary if you patched your game to 1.15/2.10/3.6/4.3.
You have to download a new Updater version when AwesomeMod leaves its test state!
Don't use this when you still have the old 1.14/2.9/3.5/4.2 patch!

Attachment deleted. Use v1.7awetest (http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,19037.msg551841.html#msg551841) instead! It's compatible with Fast Lane Stuff!

Your Electronic Arts folder is located at the right place. Does it download AM and start the game? I forgot to add "exit" to the file after it starts the game.
Code:
(...)
cd "%base%"
3booter.exe

:error1
echo Error code 1. The updater couldn't find an Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 folder in your My Documents folder.
echo Read the Readme for details.
(...)
It displays error 1 right after starting 3booter.

Or doesn't it download anything at all and does it display error 1 immediately? Then there's something wrong with the registry check, I think.

It reads your My Documents from the registry, so that shouldn't matter. I'm now practically convinced that there is something wrong with the registry check. If you're not as computer retarded as onesmartchicken, click Start and type 'regedit' (maybe you need to click "Run" first). Press Enter. Get to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders and look at the value of Personal:
Is this the same as your My Documents directory? Does it say something like "D:\Dokumenter"?

Attachment deleted. AwesomeMod is out of its test phase now. Please download the normal Updater from the first post.

Is there anyway to know if this is working?

Let me clarify. I downloaded and installed according to the directions in the read me file, ran the updater and it brings up a cmd screen. I push any key as it says, and it proceeds to scroll down to the bottom. I can't read what is being input while scrolling, because it goes too fast before it closes. Is this what should be happening?

When it works, it should start the game. When it doesn't, it should show you an error. If you're fast enough, you can pause the process with CTRL+S.

An odd thing that I've noticed is that when I run the .bat - it only seems to run fps and then open the game IF it got to download an update.  Otherwise, it runs itself and then quickly closes after seeing that there's no new updates and I have to go manually click on fps or my game shortcut.

It's only mildly frustrating, but I wondered what might be causing this.

I got a little problem.
After downloading the files, and uzipping them the Updater tries to move them. 1 File gets moved and then I got a syntax error.

I'm running this on Windows 7 x64 with all Expansion and Stuff Packs (WA, HELS, AMB, FLS).
Oh and I don't know if this is important but I am running this on a german OS.

And then I get a file not found error. He tries to start 3booter.exe but it seems this wasn't moved before, so he can't find it.

... Sorry to bother you :D

I tried the 1.7.1 version, but it came up with these error messages.
I don't know if you're fluent enough in german to translate them, so I will give it a try.

The file it does move is awesome.package.
The files it doesn't move are 3booter.exe, FPS_Limiter.exe en the associated dll files.

Does this one work (attached below)?

And no, you don't bother me, this thing just has to work properly!

Well that seemed to work a little better ... at least now he moved all files.
Yet again, he couldn't execute 3booter.exe because this wasn't found.

Edit: I checked my Sims3 directory and I found the files. He just moved them to the Fast Lane Stuff dir, but not into the Game/Bin dir.
Maybe it has something to do with my way of installing the expansions? Because I install them into my Sims3 dir, just give them another Name ... well the german one.

So your Fast Lane Stuff directory would be "Programm dateien (x86)\Electronic Arts\Die Sims 3\Die Sims 3 Gib Gas - Accessoires"?
Not just "Programm dateien (x86)\Electronic Arts\Die Sims 3 Gib Gas - Accessoires"?

3booter and FPS Limiter don't have to be placed in the Game\Bin directory, so that shouldn't matter.
Use this one below. Please check if the directories the Updater finds match the install directories.

That's impossible. It works for me. Are you sure that's the case?

I seem to be having the same problem. I fixed the error 3 message I was getting, but now it runs and then closes itself

My Sims3 directory Structure is as follows

The Sims 3 World Adventures 64-bit directory: "D:\Die Sims 3\Reiseabenteuer"
The Sims 3 High-End Loft Stuff 64-bit directory: "D:\Die Sims 3\Luxus"
The Sims 3 Ambitions 64-bit directory: "D:\Die Sims 3\Traumkarrieren"
The Sims 3 Fast Lane Stuff 64-bit directory: "D:\Die Sims 3\Gib Gas"

It still doesn't launch the 3booter.exe. Same error like the one before. :(

Edit: Strange enough I checked your batch file. Normally I'd say it should start, and I can execute 3booter manually. *ponders where the error is*

Seems there is a path in there, that shouldn't be there. If you're changing the directory to launch the sims3, you won't need anything in front of the exe, right?
Though, I can't tell where the path get's added ... :(

Hope you can figure it out, and sorry if the messages aren't translated. Hope you can make them out anyway :)

With Vista it's like John\Documents instead of John\MyDocuments. Could it be that?

Hi.  I'm using the newest version of AwesomeMod Updater (v. 1.7.1, posted today).  I have followed the installation instructions, placing the wget.exe and unzip.exe files directly into the Windows directory.  My mods are installed the New Way and are working fine.  I'm running Windows XP SP2 (32-bit).  I have all the expansion packs and stuff packs, and am fully patched up to 4.3.

I keep getting errors, though.  The batch file correctly identifies my Documents folder, but then complains that the Mods folder is not there, when it clearly is.  Also, the batch file keeps complaining that it can't find the 64-bit registry locations ... which patently aren't there on a 32-bit OS.

I have attached screenshots of both the DOS window running the batch file (with errors) and the directory tree showing the path to my AM installation (I downloaded it today, but the file date still says 9-7-2010).  I would be happy to provide you with any further information you need, if you can tell me how to find it.

Thank you!

Can you post a screenshot, like Bumble did one page back?

Hope you can figure it out,
The weird thing is that I can't reproduce this. It should change the active directory to the FLS directory ("D:\Die Sims 3\Gib Gas"), and it looks like it does,
Code:
C:\Users\Niiro\Documents\AwesomeMod Updater Revived>cd "D:\Die Sims 3\Gib Gas"
but it just continues in the Updater directory:
Code:
C:\Users\Niiro\Documents\AwesomeMod Updater Revived>3booter.exe
and this doesn't happen on my machine. Hhm.

Quote
and sorry if the messages aren't translated. Hope you can make them out anyway :)
Oh, my German is good enough, thanks.

Yeah it's the same.
C:\Users\username\Documents
Well, is there actually an Electronic Arts folder present in "C:\Users\username\Documents"?

I have followed the installation instructions, placing the wget.exe and unzip.exe files directly into the Windows directory.
Did you do it right? Error 3 means: "The updater couldn't find a file named "wget.exe" in your Windows directory."

Quote
but then complains that the Mods folder is not there, when it clearly is.
What error code do you get? There's no evidence in the screenshots.

Quote
Also, the batch file keeps complaining that it can't find the 64-bit registry locations
That's normal.

Use the one in reply #53. This one pauses after the registry check. Please check if the results of this check match your installation folders.

I seem to have the same Error as Tamany.

Files are correctly placed, though the updater says it doesn't find the "Mods"-Folder.

German OS, WinXP SP3
Mods placed The New Way

Perhaps it got something to do with the Documents-Directory? In my case and Tamany's the folder is placed directly on the harddrive. Mine isn't even placed on the Windows-Harddrive, but on "E:\"

I'm not all in batch-programming, but could you do an step-by-step-debug-version, which prints the folder, in which the program works?

I saw in the code, that it should delete the Scriptcache.package before checking for the mods-Folder. In my Sims3-Folder, this file is still present. Maybe it doesn't even change the folder to the Sims3-Folder?

Screenshot attached:
(http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3912/sims3updatererror.th.jpg) (http://img525.imageshack.us/i/sims3updatererror.jpg/)

edit:

added an "cd" in the batch-file:

Code:
cd "%docs%\Electronic Arts\*Sims 3"
cd
if exist "Updater" RD "Updater"
if exist scriptCache.package del scriptCache.package
if not exist "Mods" goto :error5

If i run it now, it says that my Desktop is the current folder, where the .bat is located.

tried a bit around in cmd.

While i can create and delete folders and files on other partitions, it is not possible to change the partition I'm working on. I start on "C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Chris\" and can change to any other folder on C:\ and create and remove folders on my other harddrives, but if i try to change the partition to "D:\", the program just gives my last position back:

seems to be Niir's problem, too.

Additional Note: Im working with administrative rights, so this shouldn't be the problem.

I can't just move the batch to the drive of my documents folder or my sims-Folder, cause they are on different drives. (documents is on "E:\", Sims is on "F:\")

If i move the bat to E, it works fine with updating, but doesn't start the game, as he can't change the working directory to my Sims-Directory.

You're right. Now we've got the problem. As my game files are on the same partition as my Documents directory, I never noticed it.
I'm currently scouring the internet for a way to change the directory to another partition.

but could you do an step-by-step-debug-version,
Yeah, I already had a plan for that.

If you simply enter "D:", you can change the partition.

I don't know how, but i think it's possible to extract the partition from an path and change it prior to the directory change.
You don't even need to check if the current partition is the target partition, you can simply change it. Changing to the current partition does nothing, thus shouldn't be mailicious.

Quite sure.  It happens all the time to me.  It moves so fast I don't have a chance to take a screenshot, but the last thing I see on the black window is a list of the three .zip files it looks for.
If I'm not up to date - aka, there's a new awesomemod to dl - then it works perfectly after getting the new files.  Everything opens like it's supposed to.  It's only when nothing new needs to be done that it just shuts down.  I'm baffled.

... ok.  I just spent a good bit of time trying to catch that last second before the window closes and nothing else happens.  I'm up to date, so it just repeats the same actions any time I try to run it.

Is it a problem that my 3booter apparently never got deleted?  I seem to have both of these locations at the same time.

testing, by deleting the old folder..... and no.  Nothing happened.  Well, I'm out of ideas.

Heh.  Of course I have awesomemod installed.  I used it to destroy all humans earlier today, so there's no question it's there and working as it should.
Docs>EA>Sims3>Mods>Awesome, all as it should be in the new install path.

Downloaded and ran new version.  Screen looked different, but still closed without opening fps or 3booter.  Just to test something, I renamed the existing Updater folder so it would re-download the files needed.  Ran again, new folder was generated with exactly the same content as old folder - but neither fps, 3booter, nor Sims3 initiated.

Would it make a difference if not ALL of the expansion/stuff packs were updated?  I was lazy this last update and didn't follow up after it auto-updated Base and Current like it tends to do, ignoring the others.  I can't see as how this would make a terrible difference, as not everyone is going to have updated.

I'm going to update what I can while I scratch my head in confusion.

Laziness is one thing.  UR I agree, is just plain retard looking, but to assult the way someone has always used their language by comparing Color and colour is going overboard.
American English is NOT the same as British English.
This is appearent in calling the hood of a car a bonnet, which to an American is a hat for a woman and a hood with has 2 meanings, the car's engine cover and the hat piece attached to a sweat shirt, a coat, or similar garment.

Black English is somewhat different, too, and I would not fault them if they spelled something fo' instead of for.
Please be open minded when you talk to people, and be sure you are not assaulting a culture rather than just laziness.
Thanks

I do not care who I insult. If I do not understand what you are saying, how the hell am I going to communicate correctly with you? Remember that this is MATY and the standard for correct grammar is key to any communication on this forum. Many of us are from other countries where American English and British English is what we are exposed to. Throwing in anything other than the occasional meme or acronym from the Internet and you may be faced with a lot of problems.

BTW, your last post is remarkably similar to a drive-by, since I cannot find anything resembling a grammar discussion in this thread. If you do not have anything other than "OH HAI, I kno ure deeferens in langages!" to say, I suggest you keep your cakehole shut. And wtf is up with the "assault" on other peoples languages? FYI, no one is bashing anyones head in. If your feelings are hurt because someone misunderstood you, then go cry me a river, 'cause no one cares.

Already done. I was just seeing if I could work it out myself until granthes had a chance to implement it. I was doing it the other way around, but I couldn't figure out what file the Custom Launcher used to open Sims 3.

Right now, I use your program for when I'm peering through new packages that I want to delete, and granthe's for when I want to load the massive loads of packages in my downloads file, so it's all good.

I found my issue.   I copy/pasted 3booter, FPS limiter and the two dll files that were in the same folder into the FastLane>game>bin folder.   Apparently, it was an issue with those programs just not wanting to run from where they were.  So, now I can at least get THAT working again.  I'd been having problems since the last update anyway.

But I think the Updater is insisting on using the ones in it's updater folder, which then won't run because those programs seem to only work on my computer in the latest ep/stuff folder.

So, problem identified anyway.

Yep it works great now.
Does the FPS limiter cap it at 30 or 60?

The updater does not run 3booter from the AwesomeMod Updater Revived folder, but from the latest EP/SP folder.
Make sure you don't have any backups or copies from awesome.package in Documents\Electronic Arts or any subfolders.

Black English is somewhat different, too, and I would not fault them if they spelled something fo' instead of for.
What the hell kind of minstrel shows have you been attending, David Duke?

BTW, your last post is remarkably similar to a drive-by, since I cannot find anything resembling a grammar discussion in this thread. If you do not have anything other than "OH HAI, I kno ure deeferens in langages!" to say, I suggest you keep your cakehole shut.

Oh, it's only posted once before, when it announced five months ago it wouldn't be using Awesomemod any more because everyone here is SO MEAN.  I look forward to seeing what it has to bitch about in February.

I know I haven't been back in awhile, internet issuse, but the problem I was having is the same as Jessnova. I only have WA, and it downloads everything, but I can't pause it after the moving files line she caught, and after that it just closes. I tried it with the new update version, and it still runs and closes leaving nothing else opened. sorry if you fixed this and I don't understand how to make it work I really like this idea, I'm just too confused to make it work right

In this case, DON'T use it.  It really isn't that hard to manually check, download and install AM if it has been updated.

Hi,

I just got a new computer with Windows 7 64bit and have installed Sims 3 with all of the EP's, SP's & Stuff packs so far. I had been using the Updater reviver when I had Sims 3 on XP without any problems, but now I can't get it to work, and Awesomemod won't even work without using the Reviver.

My Sims 3 folders are located in C:\Program Files (x86) and my "The Sims 3" folder is located in "C:\Valued Customer\My Documents\Electronic Arts (do I need to move this?).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If AwesomeMod doesn't even work without the Updater, I can tell you it WON'T work WITH the Updater. So, go and fix your mod locations.
Also, your signature annoys me.

It sounds like you haven't got the framework right, and AM will work fine without the updater if you have everything installed right.  If you had everything working on XP it shouldn't be that hard to get it right on Windows 7 as it is the same bloody arrangement.  If you move the stuff from documents (Windows 7 doesn't call it my documents) the game will regenerate them when you play, they are the default files for storing saved games, etc. the same as it was with TS2.

I'm having the same error Bamble had and it wouldn't go away even though I did follow the instructions.
Is it because I only have HELS and AMB installed? If that's it, then I'm sorry for bothering you.

v2.0awetest

Also many other changes, so I don't know if it works for everyone. See the Changelog for details.

basbas, I've been getting an error code 5 although I have set up my mods using the "new way", and I believe I found out why. There's line in the .bat file that says the following: cd /d "%docs%\Electronic Arts\*3".

As I have installed the CAW and CAP tools, there are 2 folders that match the previous command (because of the wildcard), so the updater chooses the first one. The problem is my game is in European Portuguese, so the first folder is not Os Sims 3 but Ferramenta Criar um Mundo de Os Sims™ 3 (CAW), which obviously doesn't have a Mods directory in it.

A fix would be much appreciated.

Just started using the AwesomeMod Updater a couple of days ago (since installing BootCamp & Win XP sp3 on my MacBook Pro) and decided to install the 3booter.exe & FPS Limiter at the same time to get all the benefits of those goodies as well. Now I'm running into an annoying issue - my game will launch & play fine, but when I exit (usually using Save & Quit option), I will get a program crash error related to TS3EP03.exe saying it tried to write to memory that couldn't be written. I removed the 3booter.exe and the FPS Limiter files I got from this site and created my own FPS Limiter .bat file with the GUI tool I found elsewhere on the internets, and I get the same crash on exit. This does not occur if I start the game with the Launcher executable instead. Has anyone else experienced this? Since the crash occurs on exit and doesn't seem to affect my game-saving functionality, should I worry about it at all?

Did you try removing the updater, as it isn't compatible with MAC's, there may be an issue with Bootcamp?  I use 3booter and FPS in a Win7 machine and they work fine.

Using the game launcher to start the game means no FPS limiter and also means that the AM no-CD check won't work.  Have you tried simply saving the game first, then quit after the save?  I had a couple of crashes way back with the base game only when using the save & quit option, this was before I started using AM.  Since then I always save, then quit the game without saving, and since doing that I haven't had a single problem when saving and quitting.

The updater works just fine now, though a new problem has risen that's never come up before. Usually, I use program in conjunction with Granthes's Custom Launcher (which now has included a way to use a custom startup file if needed).

Now, when I use the updater with the Custom Launcher, I get an error code 1. When I use the updater or the custom launcher by itself, however, they both work just fine. This has never come up before, so I figured I'd report it in case other people have the same problem, or if it was a symptom of a larger problem.

If you were already aware of this, my apologies. I haven't had any problem using both until v.2.2.1.

Error code 1 would indicate that there is both a 32-bit AND a 64-bit registry entry of The Sims 3 in your registry, which is practically impossible. However, v2.2.2 ignores this error and just continues.
ETA: I tried that Custom Launcher thing in combination with v2.2.1 and it worked just fine, though.

v2.3beta
At this point, I would consider v2.3 stable enough to replace v2.2.4. But, because of the issues with v2.2 after the release, I offer it as a beta version first. If I don't get any feedback or bug reports for one week or so, it will replace v2.2.4.

New in v2.3:
- The updater can now update itself. However, it will ask you if you want to apply the update or not.
- New way of finding the Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 folder: the updater finds the locale code (like en-US) in the registry and compares it with the new inculded file, locale.aweupd, which needs to be placed in the Windows directory.
- Built-in AwesomeMod test version download: downloading a seperate awetest version isn't required anymore.
- Other minor inprovements; see the Changelog for details.

So, please test this and give feedback.
v2.3beta - build 60 is included below. If I fix something in the next build, the updater will download it.
December 13: Updated to build 61. Build 60 will download it automatically.
December 14: Updated to build 62. Build 60 and 61 will download it automatically.

December 15: Updated to build 63 (final). Build 60, 61 and 62 will download it automatically.

I tried the newest version, if just to see if it no longer gives me an Error 1, but, unfortunately, it still does. The new file is in the windows directory and everything.

I'm... not even sure why I'm still getting this error, but eh, 64x systems just always seem to have weird stuff happening all around.

I tried the newest version, if just to see if it no longer gives me an Error 1, but, unfortunately, it still does. The new file is in the windows directory and everything.

I'm... not even sure why I'm still getting this error, but eh, 64x systems just always seem to have weird stuff happening all around.
Build 61 hopefully fixes this. Unfortunately, build 60 checks for error 1 before checking for an update, so you'll have to download build 61 manually. Note, error 1 is an error which shouldn't occur on any computer, so there might be something wrong with your pc.

Other users of build 60 will be notified of the update. This is a nice check if that works, too.
Expected behaviour: screen with "Build 61 has been downloaded", pressing 1 will update it and then immediately start the new build. Pressing 2 will not update it and continue with build 60. Pressing 3 will exit immediately.
Does this work?

Hyper late edit: removed not-working link to build 61.

Yeah. What I should have done before I updated was to check to see if the problem worked just fine when using it outside of Custom Launcher, and whether or not it's just that coupled with the 64x system. I'm kicking myself for not thinking of that. If you want me to test that for you for future reference, I'd be more than willing to.

Anyway, program was updated. The code that came up went by too fast to read until it started checking to see if there were any updates on any of the programs. The only time I had to press any keys was the credits screen, where you listed people you wanted to thank. It loaded up Sims 3 without a hitch, and worked perfectly with Custom Launcher.

Did you have to press any key (at the credits screen) BEFORE The Sims 3 started, or after?

Before. Granted, with the amount of packages I have, it takes Sims 3 a while to load up. I'll try booting it up without any packages, save hacks, and wait to see if I need to press any buttons before Sims 3 will boot up.

Edit: Yeah, it automatically boots Sims 3 up. I didn't have to press any keys to get Sims 3 to start booting- it's just my horrid bloated packages folder. I'm actually in the process of cleaning up and I'm picky on quality (no transparency issues, textures have to fit well, no shoddy modeling) on top of it, but still, I have a large folder.

Also, a belated thanks for including me in the credits. I can't believe I missed it the first time; I didn't even think to look since I figured I was the one who should thank you instead!

Updated to v2.3 (v2.3.0.89)
Beta builds (60, 61, 62) should download this update automatically.

- New file, locale.aweupd: this file should be placed in the Windows directory (along with wget.exe and unzip.exe);
- Added ability to update itself;
- Built-in AM test version download support. No need for separate awetest versions anymore;
- Other minor changes. See Changelog for details.

I am stupid - no need to tell me. I used to have AwesomeMod installed but when I added Dark Night to the game I had to remove it. Now you have a revised Awesome Mod. Does it work with Dark Night? If so, do I have to reload the origonal AwesomeMod since this new one is an upgrade. Or can I just use the new one. I can not figure out how to install it. I am not young or a computer whiz. I want AwesomeMod so I can alter my Sims people with things like really skinny body with big head or tiny eyes and huge ears. I really miss the ability to really alter the Sims from the ea sameness.  jodysan

v2.4beta
If I don't get any feedback or bug reports for one week or so, this version will replace v2.3.

New in v2.4:
- Fixed issues with Windows XP;
- Reduced file size of updater.bat by 42%;
- New file host makes the process 91% faster;
- Improved wget and unzip check;
- Fixed check for test version;
- Other minor changes. See Changelog for details.

So, please test this and give feedback.
v2.4beta - build 14 (v2.4.0.103) v2.4.0.107 is attached below. If I fix something in the next build, the updater will download it.
December 31: Updated to build 15 (v2.4.0.104). Build 14 will download it automatically.
January 2: Updated to build 16 (v2.4.0.105). Build 14 and 15 will download it automatically.
January 4: Updated to v2.4.0.106 (beta). Build 14, 15 and 16 will download it automatically.
January 4: Updated to v2.4.0.107 (beta). This build should fix imcompatibilities with Windows XP.
January 7: Updated to v2.4.0.108 (final).

January 7: Updated to v2.4.0.109 (final).

Attachment deleted. Final version available in original post.

Even when running as administrator WITH UAC turned off, it gave me code 12. Is there some utterly assanine reason it can't extract something when all of the limiting factors have been eliminated? I honestly want to go to wherever it is downloading and extract the file myself at this rate, along with installing it to the proper location since it probably won't be able to do that either. This is using the 2.4 beta.

Does that error occur using v2.3? Do you have any expansions installed? If so, which ones?
EDIT: When deleting all created files and running the updater again, I also got error 12. This should be fixed in build 15. You may find redundant updater files in Documents\The Sims 3.

This thing is very frustrating. I'm pretty sure I unzipped everything to the right places. Whenever I run the updater, it displays all of the messages too quickly for me to read. I managed to get half of a message when I was spamming prt scrn and it said:

4beta - build 16> has been downloaded.

commended>.
 this update.

ernal or external command,

Since I can't read the whole thing, I'm not sure what exactly it's telling me happened or what to do next. I tried seeing if it worked anyway and no, Sims 3 loads and says Awesomemod is not updated.

I'm running this on Windows XP, have every expansion and stuff pack installed, and have my mods installed the new way.

Maybe this has something to do with my horrible internet connection? I miss the old way of just downloading and manually installing the test file.

Yep. And there's no updated version on the main thread, unless it was updated after December 3rd without mention, or at http://beta.moreawesomethanyou.com/ts3/test/ anymore, hence why I downloaded this program.

You clearly don't know what you are talking about, do you? This updater is NOT AwesomeMod. All version numbers, bug reports and feature lists in this thread apply to this updater and NOT AwesomeMod. There is NO test version of AwesomeMod available, as you should have discovered by SEARCHING.

Why don't you try downloading from the right place.  Just because Pescado doesn't mention shit in the main download thread doesn't mean it hasn't been updated.  The test version became public after a couple of weeks.

The updater should not delete aweconf.package. I didn't configure it like that, and aweconf isn't mentioned in the whole file. It only replaces awesome.package and does nothing else with the files in there. I use the aweconfig myself, and it works fine. Anyone else having this problem?

This updater does nothing with the aweconf package. You probably think it's deleted, because it wasn't there in the first place. Or you put it there yourself, but why would you do that?

The updater bat is giving me an error code 9, read the readme;

Code:
Error code 9

Meaning:       The updater didn't move 3booter and/or FPS Limiter into the right folder.
If you see this error code, the Updater has already downloaded the necessary files. To save disk space, you can press 1 to let the Updater clean up the download folder.

I check, 3booter is in the Late Night directory. I'm going to try and reinstall/redownload the updater manually, see what it gives me. 3booter worked on it's own.

Think a log file will help a lot with debugging but ditto on the error code 9.  Tested this on a properly patched Sims 3 with 3booter and fpslimiter on a Win 7 64 bit Ultimate installation.  It prompts me that there is a new update (uhhh...there shouldn't be) then borks out with the error when I press option 2 to continue.  Option 1 spits out a paragraph of text including an update.zip not found then self closes even when I run the bat file via cmd /k.

Error 9 means something else:
Code:
Error code 9

Meaning:       The updater couldn't check for compatibility with your game version. This is probably because the server is down.

How to solve:  Try again later or check your internet connection.
Do you have an old readme file?

To all:
It turns out that I was 'abusing' the file host. They removed all files and pages, so the updater can't check for newer versions or download compatibility.txt to check for patch compatibility.
I am now working on v2.4.1, which will remove all update checks and other things which involve that file host. I'll have to find a new one, which doesn't remove everything for... uh, semi-abuse.
Update coming soon.
EDIT: It's there.
EDIT2: Patch compatibility check and test version download wil return in v2.5. Auto-update option will change to a notification.

Yes, that's possible, but why would you want it to? The meaning of this Updater is to update AwesomeMod when you start the game, not when you think: "Well, let's update AwesomeMod".
But if you really want such a feature, send me a PM or something. Modifying the batch file is not that hard.
I won't add it as some default feature, as it's really not the scope of this Updater.

After following the steps and getting it right I have a slight problem with your updater, it's giving me very harsh lag when in Play, but in Pause I can move the camera fine. My sims are getting long delays when I try to move them. It might be possible that I have too much CC or something might be interfering with the mod. Before I started using this the only problem I had were the Bartenders and Bouncers leaving there post (conflicting with Twallan's Mod and Bar Hours) so I decided to go back to Awesomemod (I had already updated TS3 and didn't see any update for the awesomemod so I had to use something else). I've deleted all my mods except for my cc that are .packages ... I'm not sure what the problem is but I hope I'll find out soon. :(

The updater doesn't do anything to your game. It is not a mod, but a standalone program that starts the game when it's finished, just like you would do when you'd want to start the game.

Windows only!
And I have a Mac...*sigh*
When you bought your overpriced and overrated Mac, you should have known that you would encounter incompatibilities with almost every program. I do not feel sorry for you.
Macs should be 'user-friendly', but most of the time it turns out that they are not as user-friendly as expected, like now.

The errors that you're probably seeing are normal. But I don't know more, as this is the only information you're giving me.
Gimme: Operating system, x86 or x64, installed EPs/SPs, game version, updater version and everything else that may be of use. Does the game actually start?

Game starts and plays but I get errors 11 & 16 on saves once in awhile.

Oh, if it starts the game, it works.
Those errors you see just mean that it can't find the x64 registry keys, which is obviously because you have an x86 system. So, those errors are harmless.

Updated to v2.5.1 (v2.5.1.125)

The updater didn't work when Ambitions was the latest EP installed on an x64 system. This issue has been fixed in this version.

Hello! First off, thank you for this updater, it makes getting the correct update easier! :)
Second, I have an error code 12 message that keeps popping up everytime I try to save my game.  It has been working fine for the past several days. I think I installed this Saturday or Sunday this past weekend, and I haven't had any issues till tonight. :( And then I was able to save several times earlier this evening, but now that I'm ready to shut down for the night, I can't without losing the last hour/hour-n-a-half.  :(  Any suggestions?
Thanks!

This is purely an updater for AM, it is NOT a game mod, and as such has absolutely zero impact on the game performance.  Therefore your Error 12 issue has nothing to do with the updater, but something else.  Possibly a simply EAxian issue that is beyond anyone's control.

Try capitalizing the first word of each sentence and the personal pronoun "I" and see if that helps.

Hey guize

in the event that your stashing your docs folder on another drive (like a hard disk from a solid state or vice versa) Just edit the updater, do a replace, replace all %docs% with the directory of the new document folder (ex F:\Documents\) then do a replace with "F:\\ to F:\" to get rid of errors.

If you dont know what Im talking about, dont ask. Im not a search engine.

I'm getting an Error Code 4. Run as admin doesn't change anything.

Using windows 7 64 bit, placed files at right place, awesome mod in packages.
Using Steam version, have all steam DLC

Not using any CC besides a few worlds (no game started with).

Did you consider that maybe the updater doesn't support the steam version?

Yeah, asking for Steam support here is like asking for support for a pirated game on any other sims forum.

AwesomeMod doesn't officially support Steam, so it wouldn't make sense for the updater to do so.

No, it doesn't make sense.  The updater, 3booter, and fpslimiter aren't cc, they're third-party utilities, and their respective creators don't provide support for the Steam version of the game.  You're on your own if you want to try and make them work.

The updater couldn't download versions.html from both mirrors. This is probably because the servers are down.
(I only just installed this)

I've tried several times but all within about half an hour - I know, I know, can't come running with an issue yet. But I'm just asking: does it run on some system of timing out? (Forgive my technical incompetence when it comes to matters like this.) Because I live in a wonderful </sarcasm> country where it costs a fucking fortune to have an open-line-connection and 20GB isn't enough for my grandma, I'm on dial-up speed, so I'm wondering whether that'll effect it? If it will, guess I won't be able to use it for another bloody week or so.

It checks two times if the file is available before moving on (and therefore displaying an error). I don't know about time-out systems as this is controlled by an external program (wget).
And you should move to another country. Data limits AND dial-up is something I wouldn't be able to stand. I don't have a high download speed either (2.5Mbps), but that's the downside of living in a rural area. At least I can download as much as I want.

Updated to v2.6 (v2.6.0.137)
Released v2.6 earlier than intended, because Generations already seems to be available in Brazil (AM doesn't work with it anyway, but still) and it adds lots of other improvements that need a bit of public testing.

- Added Generations support;
- Improved efficiency (smaller file size);
- Other minor improvements.

Hi, I want to thank you for this useful mod..  However,  I find that with my system and specs, 3Booter will launch FPS limiter only if both are installed into the base game directory.

The updater insists on deleting those program files from the base game directory each time I execute it.  It then copies them into the  "Generations" folder.  While this will launch the game for me, it won't deploy the FPS Limiter, so for now I am unable to use your program.  I know that not everyone has this issue, nor had I before the 1.22 patch.  I have read some discussion that it is a DX 11 issue.

I would like to know if anyone else is experiencing this same problem.

It's possible that I'm completely wrong but I double checked and I'm pretty sure it's not the case : the updater isn't working for generations. Don't know about an earlier EP with the latest patch (1.22).

It works as far as downloading the proper AM version and installing it as it should be.
But the booter and most of all the FPS limiter are placed in the wrong directory.

With this EP things have changed, there is a Generations folder but the new main exe is not there : it's in the basegame directory. So Booter and FPS limiter should be placed there too and not in the generations directory.
That's what I did manually and ran the game from there and it works fine.

For those who keep using the updater since they installed Generations : are you all sure that FPS limiter is working fine?

Nope, it doesn't place them in the right directory, and I'm very well aware of that.

Since the 1.22/Generations version of AM is still in testing, I figured I would leave it this way and release v2.6.1 (which, of course, works properly) when AM is considered stable.
I didn't want to create a situation like 'if you have this patch, use this version, if you have that patch, use that one' et cetera.

If you want, you can use the one attached below. It's still in 'beta', but should work fine.

Hi, you again?

Very understandable, that's why I didn't post here before. I was waiting for you to update when Am would become officially Generation's compatible.

I decided to state the FPS limiter problem because I saw a lot of people here saying they were using your installer with Generations so or I was wrong or they were playing without FPS and were risking to fry their graphic card.

I'll install and try this and let you know if I find any issue.
Thanks !

Your China lag has nothing to do with AM. It appears the last patch might have caused terrain issues in China and npc Sims (Sims you don't control) very easily get stuck. This happens a lot at Hot Springs, but it can happen in other lots around China as well. The only solution to this problem is to use the following command in the console: resetsim *

This will reset ALL sims currently in China, including yours and all npcs. I recommend you do this around 5 or 6am in-game, because it will reset all the market merchants as well.

This is not a permanent fix, as sims will get stuck again at some point. I have to reset my sims every few days.  Hopefully this is one of the bugs EA will fix in the next patch, along with photography, but who knows.

PS: I was getting this problem in China before I started testing AM. Also, lots of folks who don't use AM, like over at the EA forums, have this problem as well.

Thanks guys, for the AwesomeMod.

I just patched my game and hope to get this working; been having some mod issues lately. About how long should it take to update AM and add 3booter/FPS limiter? I understand that it needs to download files on the first run, but it's going on a half-hour now. If that's normal, just making sure.

Thanks again. :)

EDIT: Nevermind, worked quickly after I restarted the program a couple times.

Following instructions is something I'm quite good at. And I like the idea of having the Updater because it'll automatically take care of these things whenever I play.

After forty minutes, I restarted the updater and it finished in ten.

No need to be such an ass--I'm just making sure it's not a bug.

You obviously give up on things when they don't work the first time instead of fixing them.

If you updated Awesomemod and installed the FPS Limiter yourself it would have taken two minutes tops.

I have just installed AwesomeMod and this updater for the first time. Followed all the instructions, I think I've done well... but I have this same problem.
I have Generations installed and when playing everithing is ok, aside the fact that AwesomeMod isn't working! I can see that because I typed "showconfig" but it doesn't work, and the sliders limit is not increased (main reason I downloaded it). I suppose is because I haven't upgrade with the .bat file yet... but I can't do it until I understand if I did something wrong or it's just a hosting problem. Thank you for the answer.

I have just installed AwesomeMod and this updater for the first time. Followed all the instructions, I think I've done well... but I have this same problem.
I have Generations installed and when playing everithing is ok, aside the fact that AwesomeMod isn't working! Is there a problem with the hosting again?
I only ask because I am getting an error code 9 when trying to run the Updater, but it was working this morning.

If you don't know how to install AwesomeMod in the first place, this thing is not for you. I made this for people who find it tedious or time-consuming to update AM manually, not for people who DON'T EVEN KNOW how to update/install AM.

And as far as I know, there is no problem with the hosting. There might have been a hiccup in your internet connection; just try again later.

That's politeness since answer to my question is a matter of courtesy and not a duty. The readme file says "If the problem keeps occuring, this may be a permanent issue. Please ask for support in the thread at MATY." so I do that, in a polite way  :)

Thank you basbas, I don't know what makes you think I DON'T EVEN KNOW how to update/install AM, but thank you anyway. I'll check what's wrong with my connection.

To reply to this, this updater is not a requirement for AwesomeMod. It's merely an optional utility for people with at least a few brain cells.
If AwesomeMod is not working after you 'installed' (ahem) it, it's your own fault and you should search or just give up entirely.

I was originally receiving ERROR 11, I'm using an external, thought I changed all accordingly, and now I'm getting ERROR 9.
I've been reading the threads and this is the final step that I seem to be getting caught up on.
Using: 7, x64, World Adventures & Ambitions, all SP, game v7.3.2.011031, updater v2.6.1.148.
Game will not load/start.  Gives ERROR 9 and will not continue.
**Now I've tried tweaking some more and I can't get it to recognize the locale, now receiving ERROR 3.
***Now ERROR 5!

Hello, I was trying to use the updater to install AwesomeMod, and got an Error Code 4. According to the Readme, I should be reporting this to the forums.

I'm guessing it's got a problem with the updater because my version of Sims 3 is Steam based rather than in the normal directory? If so, not a biggie, I'm running AwesomeMod fine without the updater. Just a little less convienient (aka, I have to do work and not be lazy :( :P ). Just thought I'd mention it, in case anyone else comes along to complain.  :)

edit: Well, it was working. Now it seems not to be. Or maybe it never was. Either way, I'm an idiot... Think I'll leave off of trying to get this to work for now, little too drunk to want to mess around with this all.

There is little to NO support for steam.  If I remember correctly, the updater is NOT steam compatible.

Could you perhaps send me your modified .bat file? There might be some usefulness for me in it.

Also, the next version will, if it can't download the online versions master file, use the most recent locally-stored versions file.

What OS are you using? Could you click on Start, type 'cmd', press enter, type 'wget', and press enter?

Hey, this started happening a little while ago. I have no idea what is causing it (I'm pretty sure it's the FPS limiter?) but sometimes (it's completely random too) when I boot up The Sims 3 there's a FPS display in the top left hand corner. It's green text, and like I said it's completely random that it appears. It doesn't stop anything from working or anything like that, it's just that because the text is both large and bright it gets a little distracting to have it up there. Does anyone know why it's doing that?

After installing the Updater it starts my game then about five minutes later the game crashes. I set up DEP for the game prior to updater do I need to change DEP for the Updater or could this be a separate issue. I followed all the instructions on the ReadMe file and unzipped the files to the correct folder (C/Windows) and the updater to the desktop.
Okay never mind found the issue had TS3W file added to bin, but not added to DEP setting added it to DEP and it works.

Updated to v2.7.1 (v2.7.1.170)

This version automatically downloads the 1.24 final version (http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,15185.msg581368.html#msg581368) of AM if necessary.
This is important for people who want to stay on 1.24 because 1.26 breaks CC, store content and whatnot.

Hopefully this won't count as necromancy.

Since updating Awesomemod to the 1.29 patch via the updater (and then patching my game in turn), the Awesomemod Updater's been acting up. Whenever I click on the .bat file or somehow use it in another program (like CC Magic), it's given me a message I've never seen before, asking that I change my TS3 shortcut so that it points to the updater.bat file. It says I'll never see the message again, yet it comes up each time I try to boot Sims 3 using the updater.

Also, it thinks that the latest version of Awesomemod does not match the game's patch, thus refuses to start.

This has been working perfectly for me, until the last time I played when AM told me I had an incompatible core mod.

Now the updater says that the current AM version is not compatible with my currrent TS3 version.

I used option 1 to check if the latest AM was compatible with my game, the result was "there is currently no AM test version available".

Updater will not start the game.

Since basbas normally updates the first post in the thread when he updates the launcher, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it is not yet updated for the most recent patch. I manually downloaded the most recent AM and am working fine with the 1.29 patch.

ETA: Assuming your experience matches mine, you should be able to launch the game using the 3booter batch file that the updater creates in your Sims 3 install folder.

First off, your registration questions are painful.

Now. I downloaded the latest updater...

Placed the 3 files (extracted properly) to C:/Windows

Error code 1........

my updater (the one that gives the error code) is on my Desktop
C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\Awesome

I have the sims 3 and every upgrade/pack/expansion upto and including pets (I cant get any mods to work on pets btw... They worked with normal sims3... and I know some need to be updated thats why I want this updater!!!)

the Awesome mod is here
C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages

My mods folder exists of:
DCCache - folder
Packages - Folder
irunin.dat
irunin.xml
Resourrce.cfg 6/6/2010 < same as used for sims 3 - no expansions - I probably need a new one of these.

I just reinstalled the sims 3 after like... forever because I have the expansions now... and I want awesome mod more than any other mod xD

Error code 1 says to place the wget in the C:/Windows directory...

and its in C:\Windows

Tried running the updater as admin, it did Squat... I'm on Windows 7

The updater has been working with the latest patch since the day after it was released. Other than that, nothing was changed. If it doesn't work while it did before, you are doing something wrong.

To CC Magic users:
Keep in mind that CC Magic merges package files into big package files. This makes the updater unable to find awesome.package. You should exclude awesome.package from your 'merge list'. If it still doesn't work, meh.

"the Awesome mod is here
C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages"

My problem was I was trying to install the mods the OLD WAY... since I haven't played the Sims for 2 years...

Once I put them in the C:\Users\Ibcrootbeer\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 the mod loaded fine...

BUT, still can't use the updater.

Thankfully, the way CC Magic works now is that it doesn't collect anything to merge from the mods/packages folder. It leaves those alone and just lists them in the legacy folder, which it doesn't touch. So, as long as someone keeps their hacks in the packages/mods folder, awesomemod will be untouched.

Anyway, decided to try it again, since it worked for you, and for some reason, it works fine now. Maybe the first awesomemod update had something it didn't like, or most likely, it was something on my end that I somehow resolved without realizing it.

is it possible to add a mechanic to the updater, which installs the mod, if it's not yet been installed? I guess this would render a LOT of these newbie questions on this forum obsolete and provide an extremely easy way to add AM to a sims 3 installation.

Theoretically, I could just make it put AwesomeMod in the Mods\Packages folder, but the problem is that players are able to customise their mods folder by adding new folders and editing Resource.cfg. This would make it nearly impossible to put it in the 'right' folder. However, I could still look into it, as these noobs you're talking about probably won't be customising their mods folder anyway.

Another problem is that players who want to delete AwesomeMod, or put aweconf.package next to it, will probably have no idea where to look.

Updated to v2.8 (v2.8.0.181)

It's been a while since I updated this thing, but I've finally added a new feature, as suggested by Cheetah.

- The updater is now able to install AwesomeMod automatically. You specify the folder where it needs to be installed and the updater will do the rest.
- I decided to drop support for Windows XP. People have had issues with running the updater on this ancient OS, and since I don't have access to an XP computer, it's better to drop support altogether. Keep in mind that the updater will probably continue to work with XP, it's just that no support will be provided. In short: you're on your own.
- I will (try to) offer support for people on Windows 8.

Please report any issues you encounter.

Steam is basically a "nice" DRM program.  It has the potential to be shitty with all games - especially ones you can mod.

Updated to v2.8.1

The main change is that locale.aweupd is now obsolete, as its function is now handled by the updater itself. You can safely remove it from your Windows folder.
I also improved some other things here and there.

As always, the updater will update your AwesomeMod to the test version for 1.50, if necessary.

Please report any issues you encounter. Thanks.

You can increase your script compatibility by replacing each "wget" and "unzip" words by "%~dp0wget.exe" and "%~dp0unzip.exe".
"%~dp0" is the source path where the script is launched from (= where the script is placed).
So you can use CD command (I prefer PUSHD) as often as you want, "%~dp0" variable won't change ;)
Supported for all NT OS.

(I had to do this modification for me because wget and unzip were not recognized commands.)

Do you have any idea why it didn't recognise the commands in the first place?

Oh, that's interesting, thanks. I'll see what I'm going to do with that.

Do you have any idea why it didn't recognise the commands in the first place?

Yes ! The path where the script (BAT) is placed is not a default place where the script looks for commands, such as EXE or other CMD or BAT files.
A script can automatically find commands in specials paths contained in the variables %PATH%, %CD% (current dir) and maybe %TEMP% and others... But "script path" isn't one of these.

I've seen cd /d "%docs%" in your script so %CD% variable (which is a default path where the script can find commands) is not the "script path" anymore when it verifies if commands exist.
The script can recognise wget(.exe) and unzip(.exe) ONLY if they are located at %docs% path :(

There are 3 solutions:
1. In your script, rename all wget and unzip calling commands by %~dp0wget.exe and %~dp0unzip.exe commands.
2. In your script, at the beginning, add the command set path=%~dp0;%path%. This operation add the "script path" to defaults paths where the script can find commands, even if "Current Dir" is defined elsewhere. So have not to modify your script, just add this line and your script can work everywhere.
3. I think this is the best solution BUT it's the solution which requires most modifications. You should NOT use CD command.
Exemple :
Code:
cd /d "AwesomeMod Updater"
echo.%ver% >version.txt
becames
Code:
echo.%ver% >"%data%\AwesomeMod Updater\version.txt"
(and be carefull there is an unecessary space after %ver% !)

I know that for some reasons (especially when you use parenthesis), using a path with special caracters (like (, ), &, ...) into a FOR or IF commands can cause unexpected errors when script executes the command.
The only solution I know is to change "Current Dir" before the FOR or IF command. But there is a better way than CD command, use PUSHD command !
This command is compatible with Vista, 7 and 8 and I think with XP too but has one thing more than CD command, you can reverse your "current dir" variable to the old "current path" with de POPD command. In other words, you can temporarily change "current path" with PUSHD and restore it with POPD.

Suggestions :
1. I've not read entirely your script but I know that you have to define the save path according to language, and it's complicated because you have to translate the name for every languages ! EA engineers are not very smart...
Code:
if "%loc%"=="nl-NL" set "locn=De Sims 3"
if "%loc%"=="fr-FR" set "locn=Les Sims 3"
if "%loc%"=="de-DE" set "locn=Die Sims 3"
if "%loc%"=="pt-PT" set "locn=Os Sims 3"
if "%loc%"=="es-ES" set "locn=Los Sims 3"
I suggest this little piece of script :
Code:
for /f "delims=" %%a in ('dir /b /a:d "%docs%\Electronic Arts"') do (
if exist "%docs%\Electronic Arts\%%a\Mods\Resource.cfg" (
set "locn=%%a"
)
)
Find "Mods\Resource.cfg" in all sub-folders of "%docs%\Etectronic Arts" and if it found, set locn variable with the current name of the sub-folder. It will NOT correctly work if there are more than 1 sub-folder where "Mods\Resource.cfg" can be found because ONLY the last scanned sub-folder will be returned and set into the variable.
To be perfect, all commands where you have to use locn variable should be replaced with this FOR command that I've suggested and set "locn=%%a" would be replaced by the command(s) you want.

2. You were confronted with the "Wow6432Node" problem when you used the REG command. I suggest to use this code :
Code:
set archtype=
if "%PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE%"=="AMD64" set archtype=Wow6432Node\
if "%PROCESSOR_ARCHITEW6432%"=="AMD64" set archtype=Wow6432Node\
And when you need to use REG command, you can insert archtype variable into the path :
Code:
for /f "tokens=3* delims= " %%A in ('reg query "HKLM\Software\[b]%archtype%[/b]Sims\The Sims 3" /v "Install Dir"') do set game=%%B

3. I've noticed that "AwesomeMod Updater" folder is created into %docs% folder. Why not the "script dir" ? I think that it would be preferable ;)

Almost as cool as AM!  I just updated my Sims version, which is probably what triggered this.  Nice batch routine with terrific exception handling.  Thanks a mil!

The script can recognise wget(.exe) and unzip(.exe) ONLY if they are located at %docs% path
Hence the user is instructed to move wget and unzip to the Windows folder, which means the commands can always be recognised, wherever the script is located.
However, I appreciate your suggestions and agree that your way might be better, as the user has more control and doesn't have to modify the Windows folder. Still, many people (like me) like having the updater script file on the desktop, for quick access to the updater and the game. They wouldn't like having their desktop cluttered with 'unnecessary' files.

Could you eleborate why you think your method is better? The updater just gets the game language from the registry and checks if it's Dutch, French, German, Portuguese (EU) or Spanish (EU), as those are the only languages that use a different name for the user files folder (De, Les, Die, Os and Los Sims 3 respectively). Other languages just use The Sims 3, therefore that's used if the language isn't one of the aforementioned.
(This is the reason the updater doesn't work with games set to Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Thai, as I have no idea if those characters work or not in a script file.)

That does indeed seem a lot better and more efficient. Thanks.

As mentioned before, if the script dir is, for example, the desktop or another folder that should be kept clean and tidy, it would be polluted with lots of clutter. This is the reason the files are stored in a seperate folder.

EDIT: I added a beta version to the first post, which implements your second suggestion.

I didn't know that other languages (excepted Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai) use "The Sims 3" ;) I thought each language had its title.
I think my way will work with all languages (or an error could occur for asian languages, but it will be surprising) and your updater could be universal !

I'm ok with your explanation. However, users should not use desktop as a normal folder and only place shortcuts there, but it is their job ! Instead of "%data%", I thought "%data%/Eletronic Arts/%locn%" was a better path. I think game (mods) files should not be mixed with docs files - I know that is just my point of view. Often, I move my save dir on my external hard drive.

Oh, and one more thing ! "skuversion.txt" file is not a necessary file for the game. It can be deleted, modified and the game will still work. "Default.ini" contains the same information (GameVersion = X.X.X.X) and is a more relevant file ;) It's just a detail, but a tool is made of details !

And I've forgotten one important thing : nice work for your updater, it really works and is very usefull. I work with a lot of BAT scripts too and it is a funny game for me to share tips to others who really want to improve their scripts and skills. Confronting your scripts to public is a very good way (the best?) to do it !

No matter what, it's always worth a try. Finding a folder on the fly is better than using a predefined name, anyway.

Quote

I agree, but there will be people that think otherwise. However, having the .bat file (along with wget and unzip) in the AwesomeMod Updater folder will be a better idea in the end. The user would just have to create a shortcut.

Quote

That's obviously a personal preference. Changing the data folder requires a relatively trivial change to the script file. I might change the default to the Electronic Arts folder, though, as I get your point.

Quote

So what you're saying is, if skuversion.txt is deleted, the game won't regenerate it, which would break the updater? In that case it'd be better to change it to Default.ini. If that file is getting regenerated, that is.

I fully agree; most improvements come from user feedback. I really appreciate it.

Post by: Gigowatt on 2013 March 04, 20:11:32
I'm sure that "skuversion.txt" is not a core file because when you edit this file, game version is not changed (but when you edit "default.ini", it does). Furthermore, "skuversion.txt" is not present in the "Game/Bin" folder in the DVD (or ISO file). It's added by the installer when you install the game — and I don't use installer because I manually move files/folder and add registry keys ;) (by the way, no more cd key to specify !)
"Default.ini" is no regenerated but disabling this file causes a game version display bug in the launcher. Game starts normally.
As my others suggestions, it's another detail, but it's very easy to modify.

All the best for your project(s) !

Updated to v2.8.2

This version checks all available mirrors (instead of just one) for the required files.
Since the new test version (for 1.55) only seems to be available on the beta mirror, you'll need v2.8.2 if you want te updater to download and/or update it. v2.8.1 and older will just state there isn't any test version available.

Check the changelog for all changes and please report any issues you have. Thanks.

Hello, I guess am one of those unlucky ones whose awesome mod would expire on 29-06-2013 at 00:49 and the Awesomemod updater (v2.8.2) although set up right managed to download the mod which was about to expire on the mentioned date and time. Is there an update more recent than the may 2013 patch? If yes can the links be provided for that update?

Additional info - I play the base game with Katy parry sweet treats expansion and I have managed to update the game with the 1.50 game patch.

The most recent (non-testing) version of AwesomeMod is indeed scheduled to expire on June 29th. There's nothing to do but wait for Pescado to update it.

You could always get a few cans of whipped cream and have some Katy Perry-styled fun to kill time. But that's up to you.

Hello! This is probably a dumb question. Fair warning.

I want to edit the shortcut properties so that it points to updater.bat, but I'm not exactly sure what to put in the box so that it works properly. I tried plugging "C:\Users\User\Desktop\updater.bat" into the target field but I have a strong hunch that's not where I'm supposed to put it. I also tried to google it but all the results that came up were explaining other shit to do with shortcuts. Plus, I'm not sure what term is appropriate to search for the result I want.

I swear I'm not a noob! Its just been awhile!

Just put updater.bat into whatever folder you're going to be keeping it in, copy its location from the Windows Explorer bar and put it in quotes in the Target field.  So if updater.bat is forever going to reside on your desktop, the location you've got is correct.  The "Start In" field should show the folder location (so "C:\Users\User\Desktop" in this case.)

If you're sticking updater.bat in a different folder--say, C:\Program Files (x86)\AwesomeMod Updater for example--you'd put "C:\Program Files (x86)\AwesomeMod Updater\updater.bat" in the Target field and "C:\Program Files\AwesomeMod Updater" in the Start In field.

Thank you! I wasn't sure what the difference was between the "Start In" and "Target" fields. I tried quotes but I guess I must have gotten something wrong along the way. Much appreciated, Ambular.

One more question, if you don't mind: Does doing this run updater.bat and then TS3EP09.exe afterward? That would be the gist I got from reading this thread; that it would run one and then the other in succession after checking for updates. If there not a way to do this, then I'm assuming I'll have to run them separately. I thought there was because I thought I remembered doing something similar in another game years ago.

Is there a way to have it bypass that particular check?

hi, candy,
me, I never used this tool, because it is helpful to understand the mods and how they "update". So I tried to follow the discussions at MATY and updated each mod, whenever necessary.

Of course, nowadays there is not much happening, maybe the awesome mod has reached its final version.

This is why I would tell you not to use the Updater tool, even nowadays.

You just use the most recent version of Awesomemod.

Please excuse my english, normally I speak german.
