Title: Where to find GOOD custom worlds?
Post by: cassblonde on 2010 August 03, 11:30:49
I've found a couple one over at MTS but otherwise have been saddened by the lack of nice, well made TS3 custom worlds. Do any of you have a favorite?

Surprisingly, the BBS on the official site has some good ones. The one that stands out in my mind readily is one called Neverglade. Pretty damn impressive sculpting, painting, and planning.

EDIT: Neverglade can be found here: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/191704.page (http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/191704.page)

Also on the BBS or what ever it is now, there is a list of worlds here: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/162095.page (http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/162095.page)

I recommend Red County. Or Overlook Bay Build Template, if you don't mind a blank map with glitchy water (which I have mostly covered up)

Hmm, I went to that link at the BBS and saw this gem in that thread's replies:

This is a subject near and dear to me.  I have downloaded and tested MANY custom worlds, and most of them were seriously lacking in one or more respects.  By far and away the most perfect I have discovered is "Saskan Harbor," an offering from a Scottish Simmer whose BBC user name is "Johnnywr ."

This creation is artistically beautiful to play.  I run my Sims around this world with the viewing angle set to horizontal or close, as the passing scenery in this little gem is spectacular.  The creator has paid meticulous attention to details, placing many trees, glazing the mountaintops with ice, and not forgetting the little details such as adequate spawners throughout.

Also, this world is not too small, and there is plenty of room for expansion.  The custom homes are simple, yet highly playable, and perfect for upgrading, so they function especially efficiently for the architect profession.  I have had much trouble with lots that could NOT be upgraded in any manner that was satisfying in this respect.

The only caveat I can think of is that the lots from "Ambitions" must be manually added, but this is no big deal.  I don't think this world could dissapoint anyone.  A close runner-up would be "Liberty Bay."  I can't remember where I found it, but "Googling" should produce results.

Here is the creator's forum link:  the dowload link is on this page as well.

Oh I dont have World Adventures.  If I did I would download it. You should make a version without the WA features.

You get that, CC creator? You should make a version without WA because I demandz it!

Actually, I don't have WA either and it's the main reason why I don't download custom worlds, which is a shame because some of these worlds, especially these two linked in this thread look absolutely stunning.

I find that no matter how good a custom world is, it just doesn't feel the way you want it too. That's why I liked Sims 2. It was easy to make your own neighborhood the way you wanted it to be.

I've tried Neverglade and Liberty Bay before. Both are decent.

This is why you make your own. It's a pain in the ass to get the hang of, though.

That's the problem though. Requires a lot of trial and error and patience. I've sent a few hours on it so far, and I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Hopefully, I'll be able to create a world that feels like me soon.

I played with Coconut Island and it was beautiful and playable.  There were too many bug spawners for me and not enough of everything else so I only played with it a little before I uninstalled it.

(Pokes head out of the shadows)
I really feel the need to mention a really different world I recently found, I do not want to be linking youtube here so just put "candy land sims3" in a you tube search, it will be the first hit, this world is just so different and bright, the same person (Tzmsims ) also did another world, Sunset Valley The Aftermath, that one is pretty cool too, both have download links on youtube.

I like the worlds at MySimsRealty (http://www.mysimrealty.com/Sims3_WorldsHomepage.html). Cape Cavell is my favorite.

Title: Re: Where to find GOOD custom worlds?
Post by: Sarafina on 2010 August 03, 22:50:28
My Sims Realty worlds are nice, but I will warn everyone that most of the ones there have the whole neighborhood built in the same style (i.e. every house has the same overall look as they all use the same siding/bricks and same palate and type of build mode objects) and that bothered me a bit.  I know neighborhoods can be like that, but having everyone in town have the same colors on their houses is yuck.  The neighborhoods are lovely and playable, so it's a personal thing.

I second Neverglade, been playing it for weeks and absolutely love it.

Title: Re: Where to find GOOD custom worlds?
Post by: Tangie on 2010 August 03, 22:55:56
I think I have downloaded and tried something like 19 worlds. I like variety.  :)

I also love SimRealtor's worlds although I haven't tried Cape Cavell; she does quality work and always includes houses and sometimes sims or a saved game. She will often also post additional lots to place in her worlds. Other favorites include Heartbreak Island by Rflong7, Fort Sim by ehaught58 (who has some of the most unique community lots I've ever seen and who has also posted additional lots to place in your game), and Red County by coasterboi, which has a cool city / CA coast vibe. I also thought Coconut Island was a lot of fun, and really like Fargo posted here by The Goddess; I understand she's going to have an AMB update soon which I'm looking forward to downloading.

Johnnywyr's world is called Saskan Harbour and when I played it last, I had a lot of routing issues and resulting freezes. I also tried Neverglade and I know it's very popular, and can't really put my finger on why, but my reaction was 'eh'. The only other world mentioned that I haven't tried is Liberty Bay, so I guess I'll try that one next.

I agree that My Sims Realty worlds are nice, but I personally find the homes to be more than a major annoyance.  The front door in most lots steps into the kitchen, and in a preponderance of the homes, there is no dining area, nor room to put one.  The worlds themselves are lovely.  I especially like "Glen Meadow," but I deleted it because I got so irritated by the badly designed and cramped custom homes.

Fort Sims  by ehaught58 has terrific lots, but an indifferent attention to detail in the overall design of the world downgrades it significantly in my opinion.  And there were few if any spawners included.

Heartbreak Island is very good, well designed and great playability.  I just felt that the "Broken Heart" theme was a little cutesy and overdone.  But that's a subjective matter.  The world itself is very good.

Also, try "Longview," which I cannot find fault with.  It's good looking, numerous lots and room for expansion.  But not as beautiful as "Saskan Harbor," in my opinion.  And as for routing issues in "Saskan Harbour," I have not found that to be a problem at all.  Perhaps different versions have been uploaded?

I reckon Red County at the BBS is pretty good. Based on LA and it is HUGE! Most lots are furnished and filling it with Sims shouldn't be a problem with spawnmoreoverlords.

Yes, I just downloaded this world from your link, BlueSoup, and it's very promising so far!  It even includes an opening video, which I have never seen another custom creator succeed in doing.

I'm still editing it, but I like the large size, and that the creator has included tombs and hidden dive wells intrigues me, too.   Good find!

I have and enjoy Sanctuary very much also.  I had some irritating freezes that occurred until I marked the lot under the dome and the offshore island as no visitors.  The freezes stopped after that.

Another good world is the updated WA version of Niua Simoa by Kiwi_Tea.  It is prepopulated, also has the intro flyover and tombs, too.  It is located here: http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=389287

I don't use the homes that come with the worlds, I replace with my own. I like MSR (MySimsRealty) worlds cause they are easy to play and have more variety in lot sizes.

Title: Re: Where to find GOOD custom worlds?
Post by: Tangie on 2010 August 05, 22:33:29
The neighborhood having a similar look is something Simrealtor is actually very proud of, and at least you don't have to spend hours setting up the 'hood unless you really want to. The houses never bothered me, and some I actually like, but that's probably because I like variety and that includes houses, too. At any rate you're of course going to get different opinions about the worlds and their content.

There was a thread on the official BB a few months back. It was not the one that lists all the worlds, this one asked people for opinions. The worlds that I saw listed the most often by different people were the ones I tried out, because I figure if a lot of people have something good to say about them, then there must be something positive there. But of course to each their own!

I'm a big fan of small worlds, and have been playing with Crescent Cove for a long time now, available right here (http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,18038.0.html) at MATY. Plasticbox's houses fit right in with the atmosphere, which is a big plus for me. Some people reported crashes in the thread, though I haven't experienced any, so I guess YMMV.

Title: Re: Where to find GOOD custom worlds?
Post by: uknortherner on 2010 August 08, 15:29:18
I'm one of the ones who experienced crashes (usually within minutes of playing it), both on my old PC and my new one and eventually gave up on it. Shame really, because for a small world, it was actually rather good. It's one of those small island worlds that didn't fall into the trap of utilising every square inch of space which usually results in boring, square islands you find listed on MS3B.

I like the Vole's desert world, but it's too big for my liking. And it doesn't install with Sims, never has, does, or will. Which is a good thing as most of them have storylines spun off his GIC fantasies. But I suggest you look into it, if you're willing to replace them ShoutySims.

Shh...it's still better than that one person they keep featuring over at My Sims 3 Blog, who only creates squares. At least this one has different terrains. Still, square.

This is my current. You cannot haz. Well, you can haz, but it is so full of cc that you won't want. I'm playing with the idea of creating a small rural 'hood in a valley. That one will be built with the idea of sharing, since I finally got it completely right and bug-free with Abelline.

I am of the opinion that my island is pretty sweet...mostly because I really like the shallow water around it.

(http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/9066/screenshot758287470.th.jpg) (http://img375.imageshack.us/i/screenshot758287470.jpg/)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)

Someone used the world editor to make it into a military outpost type thing. A couple people, actually...so I guess there's enough space for an actual town if you don't require mansions.

http://fuzzylogicdishwasher.blogspot.com/2010/04/paradise.html

But for the most part, most custom worlds out there are just...bad. They're either too ambitious and unfinished, or fully finished but very poorly put together, or just half-done in general. Or they're square. Or they insist on using the really dark green grass which just looks horrible all over. Unpolished is the word, I guess.

*shrugs*

Zazazu, Your current one looks really nice. I thought the same of another one you made that I saw pictures of awhile back.  Not to my taste for playing though. You like your lots much smaller then I do.  ;)  SI wasn't originally going to be finished or shared but some of my friends wanted it (and I liked my first waterfall). I was just trying to get the hang of the tools in CAW.  :D  I learned a lot while making it and it's plays great so it'll do for me until I make others.  I'm liking the tools in CAW, although it feels a bit slow & clunky at times. We can do so much more then we could with SC4 for TS2 terrains.

Precious, my creative abilities aren't in question here.  I'm not the one who invited criticism by tooting my own square horn in the "Good Custom Worlds" thread.  Whether I've created zero worlds or a thousand, it's not going to make your little island any less square.  This isn't MTS, and no one is required to fawn over every submission like it's a new wing in the Louvre.

TINY. My community garden is 6x6, but it has at least one of each plant in perfect state. Current WIP will have bigger lots because most should have some sort of garden area, but there will be some tiny. I cannot live without my tiny.

Aggie and Pescado, I don't know why the images won't load for either of you.  It isn't a simple flat square, although the areas for lots are flat.

I use Claeric's Paradise Lite as the abandoned military-ish installation.  :)  You have to pick and choose which rabbitholes you use (via rugs) but that's half the fun for me.  You want to be an astronaut, little Sim?  Aww, too bad.
Everyone's in close proximity and interacts a lot, and since a lot of people are unemployed and feed off the garden, they tend to have time to hang out. I like the no roads, I don't understand why people make tiny islands with roads.

Oh I dont have World Adventures.  If I did I would download it. You should make a version without the WA features.

You get that, CC creator? You should make a version without WA because I demandz it!

No use in making fun of that one.. seeing as how the creator rejected that request. The BBS is full of tards, what do you expect?

I actually do highly recommend Neverglade. It's the only world that I've used/liked so far.

Any custom worlds out there with a suburban feel? Sunset Valley isn't too suburban feeling (road layout kinda messes with that feel), riverview feels like a little town, and most custom worlds I've tried are pretty sprawling. I'm hoping there's something out there with at least one tight little area with a few blocks of homes, maybe a cul de sac. Just lots of lots really close together.

I'm looking for the same thing in a small - medium world and so far, I'm not finding anything I like.  Anyone have something like this they know about?  I'd appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.  I've seen the ones on the BBS and nothing's perked my interest.  I'm not running hacks of any kind just CC.  Thanks :)

Lesson one: DON'T LOOK FOR ANYTHING ON THE BBS.  That forum's pretty much all dross.  I don't know why Claeric doesn't make one himself if he can't find one - he's shown that he IS very good at building worlds.  (Also, you're on MATY and you don't use AM?  You need to install it RIGHT NOW!)

I've tried, but I lose all inspiration really quickly. I am too lazy to actually plan a world, and things I make don't look right when planned, so it just doesn't work.

In The Sims 2 I'd actually take a 20x30 lot and build two homes on it, essentially making two 20x15 lots (before custom lot sizes came around), and I'd pack the town full of houses like that. I loved how it looked to look down the street and see all these little houses in close quarters. Maybe I could do this to sunset valley or something, removing all the existing lots and adding in nothing but 20x15 or 20x20 lots.

Did any of the Sims 1 neighborhoods ever get finished?

I know one was, but the creator took massive personal liberties with the way it looked, and it was not generally well-recieved because of that. I had one I was making that I was in love with, and it even had all the proper lot sizes. But CAW corrupted it. :\

Edit- woop, I guss it wasnt as poorly received as I thought.

http://mysims3blog.blogspot.com/2010/07/sims-1-unleashed-hood-recreated-for.html

Mostly people reacted to "They made it different..." with "they HAD TO because RABBIT HOLES!!!!". Somehow "new stuff in the sims 3" even manages to justify different road layouts, however that works, and Robodl rears his functionally retarded head to note that "the original only had 12 lots", clearly being a few pages behind the rest of us.

Whatever, it took liberties. Are there any out there that didn't?

The fun part of these posts is that both of you are making fun of them for posting Sims 1 stuff in the Sims 3 forum, as if they cannot read, but they are referring to the Sims 1 world FOR THE SIMS 3 posted within the link. The best kind of irony is self-righteousness that leads to self-ownage. Inability to read indeed, dumbasses. Did you miss what the last few posts were about? Hint: They were discussing a Sims 1 hood remake.

Though there's still a clear reading problem- as the one they posted is the one I said I want an alternative to.

Sims 1 was blah, lot wise. I do like the terrain, though, and if I hadn't been 90% done with my latest project, I would have scrapped it and just went with the Old Town remake.

This is my current project, Chesterfield. I still have to finish off all the community lots and build all but one of the residentials, so it will be a long time before it is done.

The thing is, the old town LOOKS salvageable, but it isnt.

They put sidewalks. Everywhere. Around every fucking lot. So you can't customize the area at all, you're stuck with the lot sizes (the extremely, extremely unconventional lot sizes) they used to begin with.

The downtown is laid out as if they didn't spend even half a minute thinking about it and there's pretty much nothing you can do about it.

Title: Re: Where to find GOOD custom worlds?
Post by: Zazazu on 2010 October 10, 06:28:01
Unconventional lot sizes stop you from being a lazy ass and downloading creepy-doll infested lots off the Exchange.

Looking at the photos, I mostly see the sidewalk-encased lots in the downtown area, where you would expect to see that sort of thing. Of course, I haven't downloaded it and I'm only going off photos, but I see many large lots (or fucking ginormous wastes of space to me) with no sidewalk around.  As for downtown, it's definitely not to my taste (I'd be sledgehammering the whole section), but seems similar to the default 'hoods. It's certainly not a glorified square like that one creature churns out weekly.

I'd tell you to just go create your own world because you'll find ample opportunity to bitch about anything non-EA and, despite your brother-fucking obsessions, you actually do have some laudable creative skills. But, we know how scary CAW is for you, with it being all system-intensive and stuff.

*Any extra bitchiness can be explained by frustration from spending the last 20 minutes trying to make a driveway on a smooth 35 degree decline with the piece of crap excuse for terrain elevation tools we have in-game. Also, see: Shouty Vole.

Title: Re: Where to find GOOD custom worlds?

Conventional lot sizes also render everything you build there and everything you've previously built completely unusable. It is EVIL, much like NON-FLAT EDGES.

Title: Re: Where to find GOOD custom worlds?
Post by: Claeric on 2010 October 10, 15:27:11
Whatever. It's a legitimate complaint. The downtown looks like shit, they didn't think about the placement of the actual lots at all, and because they loaded it with sidewalks there's barely anything you can do about it unless you absolutely love going around building stupid sized lots from scratch with no room for non-hideous rabbit hole lots.

The game doesn't know how to handle too many sims, so you're likely not going to find a world populated with so many that you "meet someone new every night". And places are deserted at night because that's how the game is set up, sims go to bed at night and there's no lots that are set to be populated in particular at night. A custom world won't change that.

You can, however, mod the game so that places are populated at night. If you want your town population of all ages to freaking love hanging out at the park at night, I'm pretty sure there are values you can change to get that to happen.

So if I put down a ton of really tiny houses and say populated them with AM or just dumped the max limit of sims inside each one would my game explode into a bfbvfs?

It'll get slow and skippy. When this happens depends on your system, and most likely how much cc you use. I use a shitload. I'm perfectly safe at around 140 sims, so I set AM to a limit of 120.

Title: Re: Where to find GOOD custom worlds?
Post by: Menchii on 2010 October 17, 17:30:02
That number is a lot higher than I thought.  I have all the store content installed and hardly any cc.  Got a quad-core processor, 4 gigs of ram, Windows 7 Ultimate and a 512meg video card.  Lacking ram on the video card.  Should upgrade sometime.  Thanks Zazazu.  I will experiment with how many sims I can cram into my hood until my computer has a heart attack.

I've got that mod running in my game, but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. The town is still largely deserted by 9PM except for a few stragglers.

I think at this stage it may be pointless playing around with this mod until the next base game patch is out (probably a couple of weeks from now, going on EA's past record). If EA's messed around with the code to get more sims out at night (especially vampires), then it could be a wasted effort.

Zazazu, that is great fog in the last pic. What effect did you use with the fog emitters to get that? I have tried the spirit fog and the graveyard fog and so far can only get ground fog.

Title: Re: Where to find GOOD custom worlds?
Post by: Zazazu on 2010 October 21, 17:10:08
Just normal fog, no options. I put a crapload in, though. There are perhaps 15 fog emitters along the coast (in the water) and ten or so on land in that lower section, which is going to be the lower-income section. I'm still finishing the mid-to-high income sections around downtown and the one cul-de-sac, then have the more rural homes to do before I get to that portion.

(http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/7139/screenshot8my.th.jpg) (http://img843.imageshack.us/i/screenshot8my.jpg/)    (http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/5761/screenshot32v.th.jpg) (http://img801.imageshack.us/i/screenshot32v.jpg/)

The fog doesn't work as well as I had wanted it to. That coast is awfully close to the end of the world, as it is, and I wanted the fog to make the lighthouse appear to be further out than it is since I couldn't place it back where I wanted. It still looks like it is where it is, but I guess the fog gives it purpose.

I will try adding a heck of a lot more. As an existing hood that I made, I added 4 on each lot in my swamp area, but did not have as much of an effect as wanted. Shall throw more in and see what happens.

I also added a heck of a lot more trees to my hood in game. Do we know if they cluster automatically when added in game for an existing hood? My saves are longer, so wonder if I added too many, or if they only cluster when added in CAW?

Yes, which is why I am making all of the clubs in 25x25 size lots and sharing them with the community. 64x64 is just too large for most clubs. As for the apartments and so forth, well, someone else can do those. :P

There are just a few problems:
I think I've deleted the latest file, but I do have some back-ups.
EA haven't really given me good or cool stuff to put in the world; for example bridges and fences.
The project has been paused for months, but hopefully I'll soon finish it.

While we're resurrecting old threads...

Shearwater World which is exactly what I have been looking for. Smaller sized world without a heavy mass of CC I don't want. Its in fact entirely CC free. Its made with the mindset that community lots are from other worlds as place holders until you build your own.

Quote from: simsample
The world is an island ,with no discernable way to leave- my daughter did not want an airport or dock. No subways, but the world being quite small means it does not take long to get around. There are also very few effects, she did not want any fireflies or chimney smoke or flocks of birds or anything. I did get away with a few seagulls and pigeons! Eveything, from the lot placement to the bridges to the plants to the painting, is designed by my daughter to her requirements, so all credit to her. Please feel free to change them if you would like things a little different.

He's also updated his 'old' world Sanctuary for Ambitions and Late Night. Also CC free except for some Riverview items. Its a large world, and might cause some lag on lesser PCs.
