Title: Crash to desktop
Post by: alisoniam on 2009 November 28, 06:23:27
I just installed AM with base game, patched to 1.7.9, but everytime I try to load, the game crashes to desktop as soon as the green loading bar is full. I have other mods (no core mods) game works fine with those, but not AM. If I take AM out, it works fine.

I reinstalled the framework after patching.

Any ideas anyone? It's driving me nuts, I really want to play.

Title: CAS crash.
Post by: Scatterlung on 2009 November 28, 11:17:41
So whenever I'm in CAS, the game likes to exit completely when I click something. It's usually completely random. I might click on a certain outfit or save the sim and it'll crash to desktop.

I'm running the Beta Awesomemod, with WA (2.2 patch, I think?). Any ideas?

Post by: Crysill on 2009 November 28, 11:44:07
EDIT: It appears the post I replied to was merged into a completely unrelated problem. Just clarifying that this is a reply to Scatterlung's post above this, not the OP.

What convenient timing. This just happened to me a few minutes ago and I didn't think anything of it. It isn't particularly a problem for me (it has only occurred once, after all), but I would like to mention that it's not only the OP with that issue.

As far as what is behind it: All I can say is that when I encountered the crash I did have some custom clothing, although the crashes aren't consistent enough to suggest that any specific items could be causing them.

Title: Re: CAS crash.
Post by: Scatterlung on 2009 November 28, 13:10:09
It happened about fives to me.

The first time was when I selected a custom hairstyle, and then when I selected custom clothing. After that, it was just went I clicked the Everyday-wear tab and when I tried to save.

But it's so sporadic and random, it's hard to pin-point it, but it definitely only started when I installed the new patch.

I just installed AM with my 1.79, no WA, no custom content game and after 5 minutes or so of normal gaming the game crashes to the desktop. Advice?

Well, my suggestion would be to revert to a standardized configuration like the one I use, since it doesn't happen to me. Given that the loading process is completely non-interactive, the only real cause of an unexplained crash at this point is that you have some piece of incompatible content that I don't.

Thanks for the reply, it's appreciated. I've tried running no mods at except AM, and still the crash. I'll set aside some time in the next few days to try a complete re-install I think, and start again. Maybe that will help.

I  can't even have the framework installed, let alone awesome mod. If I install the framework, and consequently the .dll, I get crash to desktop (with no mods or cc at all). My error logs seem to indicate its that d3dx9.dll at fault. I'm running windows 7.

Try another .dll file from else where, the one you have may be corrupted, and don't forget you also need the resource.cfg file.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit and am using the same .dll and resource.cfg file I got from Delphy's Monkey Installer Helper way back with the base game, and no problems.  I just did the copy and paste to replicate the same .dll and.cfg files into the same location in the WA folders and like magic, everything worked first time.

My suggestion, uninstall everything, completely, re-install the base game, run Delphy's Monkey Installer, patch, install WA, patch again, then copy the .dll file and .cfg file from the base game (where the installer helper will put them) to the same location in the WA folders.

Also check MTS as Delphy may have updated the installer for WA, I don't know because I haven't checked recently.

Just got AM working. The game's fully patched and was running fine. Then it crashed to the desktop.

One clue though. It did it at night (ingame) and it might have been around th 1am point. This would have been the first night time period in the game since activating AM. Might have something to do with the 1am lag issue. Anyone else notice crashing around that time ingame?

Are you serious?

Try searching 1am crash.  There are dozens, maybe even a hundred+ of posts now, about that very thing.  It is something with the EAxian story mod and a possible conflict with AM tweaks, or other conflict.  Switch to AM story mode, and the problem goes away.

One explanation for "sporadic crashes in CAS" without any apparent explanation is overheating. Are using 3booter+fpslimiter? If not, it's possible that your time in CAS is simply blowing ouyt your video card, causing to overheat and then crash.

Title: Re: Crash to desktop
Post by: Crysill on 2009 November 30, 10:24:58
ouyt
When I experienced the CAS crash, the game was limited to 30 frames per second. Though if I consider all hardware possibilities: I don't use a pagefile and I had quite a few other programs running at the time. I only have 4GB of memory and run the game at maximum settings, so running out of memory may have been the cause in my case.

If that's all the RAMs you have, you could have easily exhausted your entire available RAM pool, yes.

Is CTD the same as MTD or minimize to desktop?  ???  After it MTD's I am still able to click on the application in the tray and continue playing. It is completely random but happens usually when I'm doing something in CAS. Started doing this after installing WA. I am not using AM at the moment but I am managing to play (except for MTD) with a few mods  and converted CC. No chop or lag.

Title: Re: Crash to desktop
Post by: J. M. Pescado on 2009 November 30, 19:44:20
No, CTD is when the program completely crashes and dies. I have never heard of it randomly MINIMIZING to the desktop, unless you're accidentally pushing ALT-TAB or have dodgy third-party programs that take over your screen.

Minimizing to Desktop may be caused by AVG 9. If you recently updated, try to turn off Optimized Scanning. AVG is aware of the issue, but they haven't fixed it.

For anyone having the same issue as me: I completely uninstalled, re-installed the game, patched, installed EA cc, re-downloaded and installed Delphy's monkey, used it to re-install all my mods, and the game now works with all mods.

Thanks for the help. And yes, next time I will try doing all that in order before asking.

Thanks! I didn't think of that (using the monkey installer) since I've always just done the manual install from the framework (yes, with the resource.cfg) linked in the Awesome mod download thread. Maybe after finals I'll get to give it a go :).

I have had this problem every since I first instaled WA. I did a fresh intall of Windows 7  and Sims 3 and WA. on a secondary boot and still had the same CTD at random. So after Awesome Mod was updated for it I installed it and still had random CTD with no other content loaded other than Riverview. But after switching to Awesome Story Mode I have not had a CTD in 2 days. I am not sure if it is sometthing inthe EA story mode or not but i would like to Thank J. M. Pescado for all his hard work on trying to fix EA bugs!!!!!! :)

I had the same problem as described in the OP, but with WA 2.2.8 installed.

Here's how I fixed it:
First I moved the userPresets.package from "My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\" to a safe place (desktop).
The game then started correctly even with AM installed.
I quit the game right away and put the userPresets.package back.
I started the game again and now it worked with AM installed and all my saved patterns still there.

Also, before each restart of the game I deleted all the *cache.package files.

Minimizing to the desktop is exactly what my old craptastic laptop used to do, except it would do it out of the blue and not just when I was in CAS. I also did not have AVG on that machine. I suspect it had to do with video card overload, but that's just speculation on my part.

Just put AM in my game and it is consistently crashing to desktop. It will run for about 5 minutes before shutting down. I deleted the cache files and it crashed for the 6th time.  Prior to reinstall of the mod, the game was running just fine.  I do have exception logs, but I doubt they are of any value.

I just removed AM and am playing a hack free game and the crashing has ceased. I was so excited to get AM back in my game.

I'm all for blaming EA for bugs since it's usually their fault, but not this time. I've been playing with the WA expansion since it came out. There were and have been a ton of bugs so far, but no cases of CTD on my PC. And it's not a lack of resources. I have a ton of RAM, a great processor, a top of the line video card, and a liquid coolant system.
I installed AM and the game CTD'd the first time my sims went to bed after I loaded that game.

First I moved the userPresets.package from "My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\" to a safe place (desktop).

Where exactly is this file? I can't seem to find it, even with search.

I am also having the CTD that occurs when the loading bar fills up to full. However, before that I played 1 session without any bugs. After that, it just CTDs over and over. Reinstall, re-patch, re-framework does not work.

EDIT: I am suspecting 1.7 patch is causing this. When I first patched, my internet got cut then download failed, but the cursed manager reported 'updated.' I connected again then did a proper patch, with the confirmation from the TS3 program that it has been patched. That may be it. I will try to re-install and re-patch one last time.

EDIT2: Forget the patch error, Pescado made another of his Stealth Hi-Bye update and AwesomeMod now works again. I will do more testing for bugs then.

I am still getting the CTD. Just for kicks, I installed TS3 and WA on my gaming laptop. Installed the AM (today's updated version) and played the game. Mind you, this is a clean install that has never seen any sort of mod. The game played for approximately 15 minutes before it CTD.  All the resource.cfg files and d3d etc files are correctly installed etc.  So this problem, as far as I can tell, has nothing to do with my system(s).  Anyone have any other ideas? I really miss playing with AM.

Edit

Went back to the old machine and discovered it was a driver issue.  Downgraded to a 186.x nvidia driver version and completely stable since.  A.K.A time to overclock the sucker.

Installed Sims 3 onto a higher end Vista machine.  That one now crashes randomly so I have to fix that one.  Oh goody.

Again for those of you who are experiencing issues, try uninstalling, reinstalling, using different drivers as well as using an old or new video card driver.

Because I have seen for a fact that awesome mod works absolutely fine on 2 machines now.  One originally with driver issues.

If doing everything still doesn't work though blame EA.  Their games are buggy as hell and it always takes me a better part of a day or two just to get the damn thing not to crash to desktop.

Original post:
=============

Have installs on both a laptop and a desktop.  Laptop is a clean install and does not crash at all.  Other, a desktop, does crash randomly.

I strongly believe the crashes have to do with the old files from before as well as a potential hardware issue/incompatibility.

If, however the laptop starts crashing, I'll probably look into the debug messages.

I've done the driver Rumba. Both machines are wildly different. One being a gaming laptop and the other a PC I had built to play games. One has a NVidia card, the other an ATI. Tried old and new drivers. Same story: CTD. I guess I'm stuck with Twallan now. Played with that mod for 5 hours last night without a lick of trouble on the PC and today for 3 hours on the laptop with smooth gameplay. I have definitely narrowed it down to one thing that is causing the crash: AM.   Being a help mod, believe me, I have tried everything to get this sucker working. Every conceivable configuration I could think of.  I am not ready to resort to chanting etc. I'll just play with the NRaas and keep sporadically trying AM as it is updated.

Did you actually download, or just look at the thread?

If you just looked, then DON'T, go and download it.  Pescado often make minor tweaks and adjustments to AM with updating the thread to say so.  The thread is only updated for major changes/fixes to AM.  If he updated the thread every time he tweaked AM, it would be a ridiculously long and wasteful thread.

Also, leaving story mode on, but enabling AM story mode worked to stop the 1am crash.

That should no longer happen. Do not keep advertising workarounds, they negatively affect the debug process. Verify that this STILL happens with the CURRENT version, as the test staff in grah say this doesn't happen anymore. But who knows what the hell ancient versions some people are using, with their lousy browser caches and whatnot?

No problems there.  Beats me why people even bother with EAxis story mode, AM is so much more logical.  But each to their own.

I'm playing the base game without WA, and I have no mods or custom content installed other than AwesomeMod. Ever since installing the latest version of AwesomeMod, my game crashes to desktop immediatly after the intro. Without AM, I can start up the game and play it without crashing, but once I put it back in, my game crashes again. I tried running it with my configuration, the standard configuration, EA Story Mode, and AM Story Mode, but nothing changed. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, to no avail. I know that AM is the issue here, but I hate playing without it.

I am reporting the same thing as snowstormburning.  I am running the latest version of TS3 on Vista, without World Adventures, with Awesome Mod, 3booter and FPS Limiter.  My game ran fine until today, when I updated Awesome Mod.  Then, CTD happened immediately after the introduction.  I am always careful to delete the cache files (rather OC about it, actually).

Thank you for your help.

I only have received a CTD twice so far. Both times were immediately after installing a newer version of AM, (It last happened yesterday) and both times were right after the loading bar got full. But each time I was just able to Ctrl-alt-del it, and then when I'd restart the game, it would be fine.

Still don't know what caused it, but since it's not a permanent thing, and doesnt happen often for me. I can deal with a random crash every now and then.  Can't be CC, o.O But I'll admit I never bother with deleting cache files or anything.

I get the same problem as the OP; my game will load to about 3/4ths of the way and it crashes to desktop. I removed AwesomeMod and it still crashes. I have not tried re-installing yet since I patched my game to 1.7.9 and I do not have WA installed. I'm probably doing something stupid but I'm at a loss for what's causing it, and I miss playing my game with AwesomeMod. Any help would be much appreciated, and go ahead and skewer the n00b if you must :)

Another problem I have with AwesomeMod is I can't get the config package to run. If I try to make a config AwesomeMod, it never shows up in my game. I think my game sucks (either that or I'm doing something stupid)

I've tried updating all the mods, clearing cache files, reinstalling framework, doing this and doing that, etc.

No matter what AwesomeMod won't work properly for me this time around. I've never had issues prior, well... I'd have an occasional crash but I'd try again and it'd work.

But, I tired like 5 - 10 times and ways and I would always crash, the only times it'd boot up normally would be if I removed the package files from the mods and just loaded it vanilla.

I don't run any other mods so... I'm not sure what's going on.

Can anybody offer some assistance?

PS. This has NOTHING to do with 1 AM.

PPS. I don't have the expansion.

Funny enough the Test Version fixed my problem. Not sure what it was, but it fixed it. I booted it up and didn't crash. Go figure.

Probably the fact that you patched your game?

Nvidia finally updated my laptop vid card driver and I haven't CTD since. I hope that fixes it for me.

Don't know if his helps anyone, but I was crashing right as the first loading screen finished.  Tried everything in this thread (and a number of others) and nothing worked...then I realized I had a tad of confusion that might be affecting others who find this thread.

On the http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,15185.0.html page, there are two versions, "1.7.9/1.7.11/2.2.8 VERSION" and "1.8/2.3 TEST VERSION."  These version numbers are not (as I had previously thought) the version numbers of awesomemod.  They are the version of the Sims 3 game (I never noticed or cared what version of Sims I was running before).  So, possibly check the TS3 launcher and in the bottom corner of it, it says which version of the Sims is installed and download the appropriate awesomemod version.  (After all, why would anyone give a single download 3 different version numbers?)

I run this game on 1GB DDR1 ram, with high settings.  I don't think RAM is really the issue it's been made out to be, especially since the game takes up about 500MB of RAM and 500MB of virtual RAM.  As a general rule, after you've already patched TS3, checked your framework and updated to most recent awesomemod, I would look to your graphics card (make sure it's drivers are up to date, and that it is not overheating), make sure that no other application is running (TS3 will ctd for me if any other application steals screen focus for too long or too often), and avoid custom content from less-than reputable sources like the plague.  I like my CC, but keep in mind that with every patch, some of it gets broken.  My game was notoriously crash-prone for quite a while, before I tracked the error down to a custom hairstyle.  The hairstyle had worked perfectly up until the patch.

See, this is happening to you because all you have is 1 GB of RAM. With Windoze taking up half your RAM, that means you ONLY have 500 MBs of RAMs free, which is why the rest winds up in swap. And your performance will suck as a result.

I'm having a similar issue with a Mac setup. I have framework installed, tried with and without awesome and .dll files in both files, still CTDs somewhere along the loading bar for a neighbourhood/save game loading file.

That was exactly my problem! Thank you so much!

I'm thinking actually that we should be abie to identify the crash based on the xcpt file.  Hm.

Except we can't, because we're missing the information needed to read anything out of it.

I have the latest Awesome. No real probs. I'm finally able to play without pain; and I'm loving WA.  I did have a sim that made me crash when I changed her hair, but that passed after I let a day go by.

 >:( I have the sims 3 1.8. I'm running it without WA. I'm using windows 7 home premium. I followed the how to install framework and AM instructions and I still can't get AM to work. As soon as the loading bar pops up the game crashes. I have deleted all the cache files. I have taken out ALL CC and other mods that might conflict, that is to say all mods. I downloaded the right version. Didn't put the Resource.cfg in packages. I can run my game without AM just fine, but as soon as I put it in and it gets to the loading bar it crashes. So annoying that I can't figure this out, hate playing game with only five traits. Need AM.  ;D

Checked my framework with monkeybars it says that the framework appears to be installed correctly but I still can't get AM to work!

Oi you there with the stupid name*: don't double post mmkay? It is not going to inspire people to help you around here.

*I love The Breakfast Club as much as the next person, but that name just makes you look like an idiot 12 who thinks she's teh bomb at pop culture references. You are not.

Sorry about that I won't double post anymore. Anything else you have to say to me is irreverent. The day I start caring what an anonymous megalomaniac on the internet has to say about me is the day I'm completely lacking in self-esteem.

Irreverent: it does not mean what you think it means. The word you're looking for is irrelevant. Lets leave the big words to the grown ups, yes? Anyway, I am very pleased to hear your self-of-steam is unblemished by my comments. One would hate to cause offence over the internets. Besides, I am too busy quaffing cognac from my glorious throne in the corner. sipping tea in my office chair.
