Title: Other Games?
Post by: Oddysey on 2005 July 15, 15:53:16
Does anyone here play games other than the Sims 2? And does anyone mod games other than Sims?

I play an occasional hour or two of Diablo 2 or Diablo (D1 is better.) and whatever my little brother happens to have on my desktop. I also play Sim City, but I haven't been able to do that for a while because the CD is cracked and I haven't wanted to buy a new one. Oh, and recently I've been playing City of Heroes. But mostly I'm a simmer.

Primarily I like games that involve some amount of ordinance--James Bond is always great (fan of the movies first), and I've taken to Grand Theft Auto ever since I turned 17.  Racing games are fun, but whenever I'm in control, the cars always suffer from violent virtual axle meltdowns, and spin completely out of control when I do so much as run into a stop sign or random pedestrians.

I'm a big Sci Fi fan, so I have a lot of Star Trek/Wars games, and an waiting for the Stargate game to come out in the fall (SG-1 and Atlantis are my favorite TV shows).

The only thing I don't play are sports games, the reason being that in real life I suck horribly at sports, so I figure that in video game sports, I will manage to set the entire stadium on fire and cause my team to lost by something like 8 million points in the first quarter.

I play Sims and 1602 and 1503...I like games without much violence.

I like Doom 3, Half-Life 2 and Battle for Middle Earth (you know, really violent games).  ;D

Sims is like taking a break from playing. Let the computer play with itself for a while if you know what I mean.

Letting the computer play itself only works if you have Macrotastics. :P Otherwise the Sim AI is so retarded that I'm ultimately forced to intervene, pretty much constantly. Me, I play all sorts of stuff. My latest thing is Pirates!. For some reason it's strangely addictive despite how repetitive it is.

I am afraid that I do not understand this concept of other games.

Ooh. Pirates. That's supposed to be a pretty good game. Is it the new version or the old version? (I think there are two, the latest by Sid Meiers. Could be wrong, though.)

Besides Sims2, the other game i'm playing at the moment is Microsoft Freelancer MultiPlayer.  I'm playing the Asgard Mod v3.

I play a bit of Sid Oh Look At Me I Am So Cool I Have My Name In A Game Title Meier's Pirates! now and then (although it's just a couple of minigames in sequence, it is a lot of fun). Also trying my hand at GTA:San Andreas, and Crusader Kings.
I'm thinking of starting a new campaign in Victoria, but Paradox games are even more addictive than The Sims...

Oooh, I love "girl games" LOL.  Ya know, the boring point and click adventures.... Longest Journey (NOT BORING!), Syberia, etc.  Story games, really.  I also loved No One Lives Forever and the Matrix game (which I actually played on a console).  I think I'd like Max Payne and Tomb Raider too if I had the time.

Hummm.  I used to be a Tomb Raider Freak, but then I bought a real computer and Hubby bought me this cute little game, "The Sims Deluxe" for Christmas a few years ago and I forgot what Lara Croft looks like.  (And no, it is not Angelina Jolie).  Though I did make Lara as a sim, once.   ::)

I do believe that my computer would get up and leave if I installed anything else on it, but my daughter makes me play Metroid on her GC, where I regularly get wiped out at level 1 to 1 1/2 (okay, so I exaggerated a little, it's really level 2 to 2 1/2 :P)

Other... games?

In the past I was a Sonic girl, I still have the games knocking about, but never play. I've got Tomb Raider 3 and the Last Revalation on here, but again I never play. The Sims pretty much took over once I discovered it's existance. *shakes head* I did go through a SimCity 3000 phase when that came out, but I got rid of that...

I played the new version of Pirates! for quite a while, but my cats hated the sounds that it generated, so I stopped.  Ok, so that's not really why...  it had more to do with finding Pescado's hacks, thus making Sims2 so much more interesting and enjoyable, or something along those lines. :)

I also enjoyed Meier's Civilization III.  I found that it's almost as addictive as Sims2.

Down the road, I plan to play the copy World of Warcraft that my husband bought for me quite some time ago.  That is, I'll be playing it as soon as I can tear myself away from Sims2.

I started playing ER a few weeks ago, and it was pretty fun.  It reminded me a bit of the Sims, but I misssed some of the control and I definitely wished I had macrtastics, hehe.  I got tired of Sims 2 for 1 or 2 days when I got frustrated with something and I played ER, but then I finally fixed whatever it was and I missed my sims when I was in ER!  So I haven't played it in a few days.  I like puzzle games like Zuma and Bubble shooter, but I don't really play a lot of "big" games except for the Sims.  When I first got my computer, I got a shareware version of "Jill of the Jungle" and I loved that.  It's one of the few games I actually played all the way through.  I got Jazz Jackrabbit from Epic Megagames, the same people that made Jill, and I liked it but got frustrated wtih it and gave up on it.  I saw the original Sims on Tech TV, I think it was, and I got my first copy of it that weekend, and the rest is history, as they say.  I could never get into the first person shooter games that my ex liked to play.  Games like Unreal literally make me dizzy and nauseous.

I've been an avid Civilization fan since the beginning.

Am I right in believing that the Guv'nor shares this love? This would explain the Battleship-vs-Phalanx reference in the old Fight Club hack thread.

Title: Re: Other Games?
Post by: J. M. Pescado on 2005 July 16, 02:09:57
Yes, although my enthusiasm for Civ 3 is somewhat less. I personally felt it was kind of a low point in the series. So obviously, you got the Battleship vs. Phalanx reference, and how it applies to Sim-Fighting.

Title: Re: Other Games?
Post by: breyerii on 2005 July 16, 02:14:00
Well, let's hope Civ 4 will be better. I too felt n.3 it didn't add much, but a preview of the instalment to come really had me surprised.

EDIT: For the devotee, Battleship-versus-Phalanx was a notorious example of what was wrong in the wonderful original game. I chuckled as soon as I read about it.

They certainly will. But I don't see a Civ 4. I don't have a Civ 4. Do you have it? Do you know anyone who has it? Sounds suspiciously like there doesn't seem to be a Civ 4. Maybe later. But right now, I see no Civ 4.

i still play a lot of older games from Sierra.... and i like all flavors of Gran Turismo, so i hang on to the console emulator for those. pretty much like turn based god games.... been bouncing between Empire Earth & Civ III for now. TS2 is on the back burner for a little bit. i also like arcade style stuff. I have copies of Chaos Defender, Fly or Die, Rescue from Space invaders, Zybex, Chicken Invaders... one i really love is Ragnarok....  and of course the old Atari & Namco games are always fun. these games just don't piss you off, never crash, have a high entertainment value and don't require 6 hours of unecessary reading to play. found a few old Xaxxon clones & i am digging on them in my free moments while on holiday. those kind are good time killers for the laptop while traveling. even have a copy of Railroad Tycoon... hmmm... II platinum i think it is? have that one going... and Tropico. don't ask me why i like these old games. guess they just have charm. pretty much do play all the civ games, even the free knock offs like Free Civ.... was disappointed with Alpha Centuri, but i have a thing going with it right now too...  haven't played Pirates, but may try it... still need to give Rise of Nations and SC4 a go, ha, i am stuck on SC3k...

Have you tried Peasant's Quest? (http://www.homestarrunner.com/disk4of12.html)
Anyway, I've recently been playing Destroy All Humans!, and Stinkoman 20X6 (http://www.homestarrunner.com/stinkogame/v5/stinkogame.html). I still can't complete level 7 without cheating.

I recently bought an X-Box, so I've been playing Halo2 online, and Otogi: Myth of Demons.  On the PC, I've been playing The Suffering, a nice blood soaked horror genre of a game.  I need to finish the 2nd expansion to Morrowind before I buy Oblivion - the next big game I am anxiously awaiting.   I tend to prefer first person shooters.  The Sims 2 is quite an anomaly for me.

Title: Re: Other Games?
Post by: Oddysey on 2005 July 16, 17:48:45
Oh, yeah. I'm totally looking forward to Oblivion. Sort of like Morrowind. Honestly, too restricting for me. Hopefully Oblivion will be less so. For the same reason, I'm looking forward to Spore. Sims, Sim City--sandbox games are really the only kind I play. Anything else is just too "wait, what do you mean, I can't do that?" Even Sims annoys me like sometimes. The only game I ever really enjoyed that had a plot was Jak 2. Which could have been way cooler. If the gameplay hadn't sucked, and the sequel had had a decent plot. (Jak 3 had awesome gameplay, but the ending was lame, and the animation was nowhere near the coolness of 2. That game was rushed.) They totally screwed that character over . . <sigh.> The "this could have been so cool!" factor strikes again.

When I'm not playing Sims 2, I'm most likely in my retro-gaming groove, taking on the alien threat in UFO: Enemy Unknown (aka XCOM: UFO Defence).  In both titles, your role is that of an omniscient and (sometimes) beneficial controller, but there's not a lot else in common.  Well actually I lie, XCOM still has quite an active community (though not as large as TS2) and people are still coming up with mods for it, which can't be bad.

I also play NWN but it's growing steadily more tedious and dated.

Actually, you're not quite omniscient, you're limited to the viewing range of your individual units. As for benevolent, well, that depends on whether you take the Soviet approach to psi-testing or not. :P

Civilization 2.  Definitely Civ 2!  I almost always have a Civ 2 game up and running on my Mac, just as I almost always have The Sims 2 running on my big Windows box.

So, just how addicted to Civ 2 am I?  Look at this:

(http://www.pearlsims.com/images/s2/afoutfits/psaf_civ_ii_shirt_shorts.jpg) (http://hullabaloo.simshost.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5900)
Ref: Inga's Civ 2 Outfit (http://hullabaloo.simshost.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5900)

That's another of my silly stories at the Hullabaloo, posted just last Saturday.  It hasn't even been announced in the Chronicle yet.  (Because I am three days late getting out this week's Chronicle.  Oops.  Blame it on Real Life.  Or Rio.  Whichever comes first.)

I have Civ 3 on my Windows laptop, but the only time I played it was when I was stuck in a hotel on a business trip to Canada and seriously needed a Civ fix.  Civ 3 just doesn't do it for me.

The "reflex" games where you have to train yourself to push buttons in the right sequence don't appeal to me at all, so I leave all the fighting games on my son's shelf.

Hmmm... I don't want to use JM's board as SimsHost bait, so if you like that outfit, here's an exclusive secret just for folks who visit More Awesome Than You: psaf_civ_ii_shirt_shorts.zip (http://www.pearlsims.com/s2/open/psaf_civ_ii_shirt_shorts.zip).  116 K download.

(The link above bypasses the whole SimsHost thing.  SimsHost subscribers can also download Inga's outfit from that thread at the Hullabaloo, but it'll sock your SimsHost account for 1.1 cents if you do.  In that case, we humbly thank you for your support.)

There's a lot to be said for crass commercialism!  ;D

Although to be honest, I just wanted to show off that cute li'l Civ 2 oufit.  I thought it a fascinating coincidence that I made that just a week ago, and here folks are talking about Civ 2.  I thought I was the only Civ 2 holdout left in the world!  Since I had already posted that outfit in the regular SimsHost space, the only solution I could think of was to make a special free version for fellow Pescadophiles.  :)

I'd probably be better at the commercial game if I didn't totally suck at marketing.  (30something years of working for government aerospace contractors does not give one much marketing experience.  Is it any wonder that SimsHost continues to lose money after all these years?  It makes me wonder how the more serious marketeers are doing.) Actually, paying $10.00 a month for the privilege of planting subscriber bait might not be a bad deal.  Since we only charge $2 a month for subscriptions, if five people a month were inspired to join the party because of it, that would be a break-even (well, make it 6 or 7 to account for taxes and stuff), and the downloads take care of themselves.

Other games...well there is only Simcity 4, Zoo Tycoon, Hotel and Warcraft sitting on my shelf. Guess I like God games. My fav is Simcity 4, the others I got from Ebay to see what they were like.

Used to be a big Doom head but that was earlier in my gaming years.

I stick mainly to The Sims at the moment (especially when the little girl next door comes over and wants to play the 'peeple game' on the 'pooter' - although we have been known to attempt computerised board games like monopoly, the game of life).

Otherwise, Emperor: The Rise of the Middle Kingdom is one of my fave city building games.  I have tried Sim City 4 but there's plenty I seem incapable of doing on it  (I am incompetent!  Rip My Lips Off Now!), and otherwise it seems like a lot of waiting around.

Oh well, another week and Uni will start again and I will have to kiss goodbye to my game playing, not to mention the rest of my life in general :(

Title: Re: Other Games?
Post by: MistressBoleyn on 2005 July 18, 09:36:31
A lot of people collect stamps, coins and whatnot.  I tend to amass pathetic amounts of computer games... many of which I've never even taken out of the box, much less installed and played.  Such as (don't rip my lips off, please, JMP, I'll get around to them some day) Civ II and Civ III.  Have the complete Morrowind sitting here as well, which I bought in anticipation of my wrist surgery, thinking I'd have a good 6 to 8 weeks off work to really get into it.  Was a bit tricky to do seeing as I needed two hands and with one arm in a cast it just didn't work.  I suppose I'll give it another shot eventually.  I've got all of the city building games (and I also liked Emperor the best of the whole lot), going all the way back to the original Caesar. I can still hear my computer chanting "Plebes.  Plebes." at me over and over again whenever more workers were needed (jeez, I can't remember, was that the first or second??)

I loved all the Age of Empires and Mythology games with expansions and still play those from time to time.  Same goes for Tropico2, although I absolutely loathed the first one for some odd reason.  Stronghold was okay, and I'm toying with the idea of getting the new one.  Pirates! was probably one of the easiest and most repetitive games I've ever played, and I was so horribly addicted to it in spite of the redundancy.  In fact, I played it just the other day for the first time in months and still adore it.  I was really into Diablo I and II for a looong time, and had my assassin up to a level 81 when I finally got sick of it (and haven't touched it since).  The various Roller Coaster Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon games still see action sporadically.  The Myst games were great but once you'd solved them... meh, no sense in doing them again.  Now they're amazingly proficient at gathering dust.  I purchased Psychonauts last weekend and must say that thus far I'm NOT impressed.  I guess it's just not my thing, so I highly doubt I'll finish it and suspect it will soon be employed as a dust collector with Myst et. al.

I'll still trot out the old Black & White games now and then, which I suspect ties into my sim addiction.  It's hard to *not* like a game where you're God.

Title: Re: Other Games?

My tastes run mostly to simulators and wargames, but I wore out my Diablo 1 disc.  Simulators can include almost anything, from business sims (Capitalism series) to flight sims (at one time I had every flight sim on the market) to tank sims (got my name in Steel Beasts credits, twice!) to others like Microsoft Train Sim.  I've got almost all the Maxis Sim games, excluding Sim Isle and maybe a couple of others.  I've played a few good first person shooters and a couple of RTS games, like Seven Kingdoms.

Mods:  I don't mod games exactly, but I have written some support programs (not working for a company).  I did a map and scenario editor for M1 Tank Platoon 2 which got used in Gunship! later as the files were similar.  I decoded the map files for Sid Meier's Gettysburg that allowed another programmer to write a map editor.  I wrote a random battle generator for Austerlitz: Napoleon's Greatest Victory and a program to modify the EXE file to fix broken artillery strengths.  The random battle generator was interesting because at one point I told the community that if I got one more DEMAND to add or change a feature, I was gonna delete the source code.  Cleared that problem right up.  Hint:  if you want something changed or added, ask nicely.

Currently I'm playing Silent Hunter 2 (WW2 submarine sim, my computer won't run SH3) and working out methods to use a slide rule to calculate torpedo firing solutions.  I think it's more accurate than using the sub's Angle Solver computer, which requires *way* too many estimated settings on small dials. :)

What is good about playing online is that you don't have to set up the game yourself everytime. Abit like playing Solitare on the computer. I can never keep those friggin cards in an orderly line when I play non-computer.

However I will still post this link to an educational sim I enjoyed. I see it's updated, might have another look. I find this sim relevant because I work in a tertiary institution. Virtual-u. (http://www.virtual-u.org/) I always thought I could do better than the CEO :P

No, I'm in firefox & closed the tab. The page in history only gives me the blank reply form, no postdata. Hadn't done a preview yet. I did see data on other reply forms in the history, where I'd actually hit the post button.

I've learned to always highlight my text, right click and select Copy before doing anything else.
Yeah, I do copy on long posts, I was only going for a scroll this time, hadn't finished typing. The tab close button in firefox is right on top of the scroll bar.

Hmm... I like playing Tropico. I like being called "Presidente!" Also Majesty and Oregon Trail.

On PS2, I play whatever catches my mood. A lot of Katamari Damacy, some Ribbit King, some Silent Hill (generally 3), and occasionally picking up any Final Fantasy except 8 and 10 to try and beat them, which never lasts since I'm stuck in each one of them at a point where I need to do massive levelling, which I hate. Oh, and Suikoden 2. I love me some cooking game.

On GC... Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, Soul Caliber 2.

Mostly RPGs. I'm awful at FPS, sports games, or really action-oriented games. I lack the reflexes.  :'(

I don't lack the reflexes, but I don't seem to be able to shoot and kill, I always hesitate and then get obliterated. I know, I know, shame on me, but I seem to have a strong pacifistic streak in my make-up.

So, Tropico and other RPG's it is for me too. I play Metroid with my daughter, but only because I happen to love her, not the game itself.

After reading through this thread I dug out the atari system a friend gave me. It still works, and I found myself enjoying my trip down memory lane very much indeed. I have to play this more often.

Pah. You do know that RPGs are a derivative of wargames, which are not at all pacifistic or peaceful, right? I think you're just happier when people die as abstract icons on a tactical map, rather than screaming, bleeding heaps of mangled meat in front of you. Like the saying goes, "Kill one, and it is a tragedy. Kill millions, and it is a statistic."

Well now, I have not seen any abstract icon death in Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing, but you are right, I have an issue with seeing blood and mangled meat, even if it is only pixelated :P

I've never heard that saying before, but it warrants further thought indeed. You are a fountain of information JM.

See, you really need to get used to the entire blood and entrails thing. Once you're used to the idea, it's actually quite viscerally satisfying and enjoyable. Try it sometime: bathe in their blood and wade in their entrails!

No One Lives Forever is good.  I just got Contract JACK at some stupid outlet place in Nebraska City (I hate Nebraska City more than Topeka) for $9.  You can't beat that with a crowbar.

I like Tropico and its expansion. I don't like Tropico 2 as much.

Adventures like Syberia, TLJ, Myst, are awesome. Which is why it is a huge shame TLJ2 will be an action/adventure.

The NOLF series is brilliant. I want a NOLF3 today.

Max Payne is also very good. I am looking forward to their new game.

GTA:San Andreas can be nice for a little while as well, although I really hate some of the missions.

Prince of Persia is also very good.

And then there are the awesomely addictive history simulations by Paradox: I am now playing Victoria. My Netherlands is kicking the entire world's butt, and the USA are my hunting ground.

And Maxis is trying to make me update my video card.  HA!

Besides Sims2, the other game i'm playing at the moment is Microsoft Freelancer MultiPlayer.  I'm playing the Asgard Mod v3.

Ooooh! Really? I'm playing Freelancer at the moment with my own mod, where i added pacific island and australian systems. And I only usually go on the Eagle Utopia server on Multiplayer.
I never thought i'd find another Freelancer fan!

The fact that I have Sims 2 is rather amazing. I am a console person. I have a lot of consoles and games for them (NES, SNES, N64, GCN, PS2, PSOne, Dreamcast, a ton of Gameboys, including DS). My favorite games include Megaman Legends 1 and 2, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Kart, Paper Mario 1 and 2, Animal Crossing, the Zelda games, Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong Country games, StarFox, and a hell of a lot more.

However, I just recently bought the Sims 1. I don't like it as much as the Sims 2, however.

I don't have any console type thingies anymore - I think N64 was the last thing I bought, and I gave it away to my sister.

I only play Sims on my computer, except if I need a break, I'll go play a point and click adventure type thing like MOTAS or whatever. Or play on popcap.com.

I already posted way up there, but I should add that I'm playing FF7 again, I've lost count of the number of times I've played through it but it's nice to go back to it because of all those cute sub-games.  Heck, the snowboarding alone kept me and my brother entertained for ages back when we first played it.

'Yeah, I'll get round to saving the Planet.... just as soon as I shave another second off the record time!'

"Kill one, and it is a tragedy. Kill millions, and it is a statistic."

If I remember correctly this is by Iosif Vissarionovich Djugashivili / J.Stalin of good old Soviet Russia?  ;D
I've taken a fancy to Starcraft recently but I've all but given up; it gets awfully repetitive after a while.

Sims, chess and mahjong are the only games I play on the puter. The rest are PS2 and kid friendly. I play racing games like Need for Speed (1&2), ATV (something or another), WRC, all the Jax and Daxter games and my all time favorite is Ratchet & Clank (1&2) mostly because I like to break stuff.

I used to like the Bond games but I played through those too quickly and got bored with the series. I have a bunch of other games for PS2 but I don't recall all the titles, I generally trade them in as soon as I play through them a few times except R&C and my racing games. I tried Grand Tourismo but after Need for Speed it was way too slow and gave up on that series as well. NFS2 was a disappointment though, especially the final race.

I like games, its what I do instead of watch the tube, that and read. But gaming is a fun activity to play with the better half of me, well actually mostly she watches and I play but who's counting?

I used to play Sim City, right up until Sims 1 came out.
Then I played Sims 1 right up until Sims 2 came out.

See the pattern here? Although I have flirted with other games in the past, most notably Civ 2, but the novelty always wore off, and I went back to my Sims.

I think it's just that when I'm being a power-hungry Bitch Goddess,  I like to be right up close and personal to my game.   Slaughtering the masses isn't as half as much fun as ruining a Sim's day by dropping a satellite on his head. ;D

Well, there's that. Like the saying goes, "When you kill one, it is a tragedy. When you kill a million, it is a statistic."

Then again, there's something to be said for mass carnage, too: "Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god!"
