Title: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: jfade on 2009 May 25, 01:12:07
So ... I've got some Sims3Pack files and have already got a partly-functioning editor for them ready to go (Picture here (http://temp.djssims.com/crapola/sims3pack.PNG), obviously final version will have a LOT more information, this is just the basic bare bones). Editor will let you preview everything in a Sims3Pack file (yes, PICTURES!) before installing it and clean it up for distribution. It will also show all meta data relating to the content. For Sims, this means you can see their favorite color, their traits, fitness/fatness, etc. etc. Houses will show the price, lot size, and a picture of each level of the house. Other content will be similar.

The main plus to all this is that you can bypass the Launcher entirely when installing custom content. It's written in Java so it's entirely compatible with both the Mac and the PC. PC version will be wrapped as an EXE so you can easily associate Sims3Pack files with the program.

The biggest problem now is coming up with a name. I prefer names that are either Awesome Alliterations (IE Wardrobe Wrangler) or names that make people laugh (IE the WTF Editor). Any suggestions for a name are welcome. Once we get a number of them, I'll pick my favorites and run a poll for them. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. :)

EDIT: An early version of the program has since been uploaded. Get it here: http://forum.jfade.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=466

I do not have the right kind of imagination for naming things. For instance, I think "Sims3Pack Editor" is a fine name. But I do want this very much. In fact I want this NAO! Why don't you name it "Excellent Editor" or "Suddenly Sims 3" and get it to us quickly? Later on tonight would work for me.

Jesus, this works on a Mac, too?  Oh come let me adore you.

How 'bout the Phadely Phinagler?

Simpaketor or EAxisEradicator.

Does this mean I can put sims2 object package files into sims3 with this?
or is it only for recolored items within the game?

I second the "Phadely Phinagler".

The Sims3Packer.

Yeah, I also suck at names.

Hey Jfade, long time since I heard from you.  Excellent work on your new package editor.  If I had to give it a name...well I'm also horrible at giving ideas but I've been juggling with "ICE Pack", "ICE Pack3r", "ICE SimPACK".  ICE stands for "I Can Edit".  Not the best name in the world, but it's a start :)

Ah, jfade!  I haven't talked to you in a few months, my fellow Hoosier!  I was hoping you'd make something like this.  ;D

As for names, I agree with "Phadely Phinagler".  Although I'm sure you want Sims 3 somewhere in the title.

Whatever it ends up being called, I definitely want it.

Phadely Phinagler's got my vote for sure!  Have no idea how to pronounce it, but I like it!

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: Giggy on 2009 May 25, 04:31:57
"The Phadely Phinagler" is not a very good name and I strongly disagree with it as it does not fit the program's purpose.

I suggest something more similar to what it does but it's not stupid. Personally I'd leave it at TS3 packer and be done with it.

Pack Peeper 3000!

I am a fan of this one... It tells you in the name of what it does... and the 3000 looks kool and it also reflects 3 being Sims 3..
Puts both hands and feet up for this one...
4 votes.

WTFunpacker?

Pack Peeper 3000!

I like this too. Peek and peep are so inherently funny.

Hey how about just 3-Pack, with a logo of a pair of briefs? Goes with the 'peeking' theme too.

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?

I would call it "Jfadetool".

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?

I'm surprised more of these suggestions don't involve the word three, because thr is such a euphonous cluster.  Threepeeker?  It could be "Threek" for short, and you could use a three-pronged fo(u)rk as the logo.

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: rufio on 2009 May 25, 10:55:00
3View is pretty good, actually.

The problem with calling it JFadetool is that it does not distinguish it from WW and WTF, and whatever other jfadetools there may be.  Clarity, FTW?

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?

Those are not TS3 tools. They are therefore irrelevant.

Then it must be labeled JfadeToolTS3 for disambiguation.

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: rufio on 2009 May 25, 11:15:30
What happens when/if jfade makes another TS3 tool?

Ultimately, what's probably going to happen is that Pescado will refer to it in his own language, and everyone else will call it "JFade's Sims3Pack editing program". :P

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: Marhis on 2009 May 25, 11:16:38
The problem with JfadeTool is that if/when jfade will make another tool it would be confusing, and jfadetool1/jfadetool2 are lame.

I still like The Phadely Phinagler, just because I have no idea of what it means  ;D, but it sounds great.

Dang, ninja'ed.

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: jfade on 2009 May 25, 11:17:49
I'm on my way out for the day, but Jud Hudson reminded me that it could also be an acronym if it sounds kinda cool. My unfinished Sims 2 program was called STAPES: Sims Two All-Purpose Package Editing System. A mouthful otherwise but the acronym sounded cool. :P

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: kiki on 2009 May 25, 11:31:55
I like 3PE.

Wouldn't 3PE be better for the sims 3 version of SimPE though?

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: BlueSoup on 2009 May 25, 11:35:18
But what if there's not a SimPEfor3?

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: Inge on 2009 May 25, 11:38:15
No one has yet expressed an interest in continuing development of SimPE itself.  But there could be an all-in tool *like* SimPE.  Not from the Jones household though.

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: J. M. Pescado on 2009 May 25, 11:41:05
But what if there's not a SimPEfor3?
The architecture of TS3 and what has already occurred makes a SimPE for TS3 unlikely. Many of the dataformats in TS3 are edited using third-party general tools, and as such, it is supremely unlikely, not to mention reinventing the wheel, to create an editor that can match the quality of existing general-purpose tools. There might be a few specific editors for handling specific aspects of creation, but for the most part a tool like SimPE is unnecessary.

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: Inge on 2009 May 25, 11:50:10
There will need to be a tool specialised for editing game state data though.  In that respect having something like SimEnhancer (but free) is the safest way, rather than SimPE which was neither one thing nor the other and allowed you to edit the data in an unsynchronised way.   We never attempted to fix that cos we didn't want to cripple simpe's flexibility for serious experimenters.

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: lechapeau on 2009 May 25, 12:08:13
Well, I'm usually useless at names, and these will probably only prove that, but here goes!
The Junpacker
PhadesFree (or Phades3)
Unfader (or The Unfader)
TSFree
Oh My Josh Installer (or The Oh My Josh Installer...which would probably be shortened to just the OMJ when talking about it...maybe)
JF-aid
FirstFade
Just Joshing
C-it-all
The Fadestaller
The Faditor, but that probably also sounds as if it would be a SimPE type tool, rather than a package installer.

As for the suggestions so far, I prefer Phadely Phinagler or 3View. And even in its so far quite basic state, it looks amazing!

FART ( Fade's Awesome Readjustment Tool )

JAMS ( Jfade's Amazing Modifier for Sims )

FESTE ( Fade's Essential Sims Three Editor )

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: jolrei on 2009 May 25, 13:56:25
Yes, except that it is the Jfadetool.

I was, myself going to suggest the "SimFadeEditor" or "Jfadeditor" as possible names, but they are not significantly different from "Jfadetool".

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?
Post by: ciane on 2009 May 25, 14:23:17
The best I came up with is C3 for custom content c... (insert word of your choice here), i.e. check(er), cut(ter), customizer, etc.
I also liked the JAMS and would suggest adding "3" to the end.
I do, however, bow to the wisdom of heaping great praise on the inventor with JfadeTool.

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?

Rather than just "Pack Peeper" you should just go all the way and call it the "Package Peeper 3000".

I also like EP3/SimP3/variations on that theme. Even if it's not really SimPE. I like the nostalgia.

I like The Unfader best so far, thinking  it needs a name like the ever-popular Compressorizer. I was going to suggest The Unpackerator, but I suspect jfadetool is stuck now.

Title: Re: What would you call a Sims3Pack editor?

LMAO some funny suggestions  JFadeTool sounds good.

BTW why cant sims 2 items work with sims 2 they all have the .package file.  Its stupid!  I know the whole graphics thing, but why did they not make some sort of transformer, that could transform sims 2 items.

I like the sound of SimP3, though I'm not certain it's entirely appropriate considering the function is quite different from SimPE.  It sounds to me more like a next generation Clean Installer.  Maybe Clean Installer 3 or some similar derivation?

Not yet to that point. Maybe in two to three days. Testing will be conducted at my forum.

I like the sound of SimP3, though I'm not certain it's entirely appropriate considering the function is quite different from SimPE.  It sounds to me more like a next generation Clean Installer.  Maybe Clean Installer 3 or some similar derivation?
I actually don't want any name associated with SimPE or the Clean Installer at this point just because I really wasn't associated with them, so I don't want to piggyback on that at all. Additionally I don't want to have my nick in any form within the name of the program just because I think that sounds egotistical and I'm not that awesome. :P

Anyhow, thanks for all the suggestions. I've added a poll now for my four favorites.

Is there already a 3Pack? (I think the "Sims" could easily be dropped as understood.) The 3Pack implies that half of the six pack has already been consumed, but there is still another for me and another for you and another for which one of us finishes first (unless some other thirsty soul is nearby). It is possibly a better image for rum-drinking pirates, er simmers, than pee.

OK everyone, thanks for the name suggestions. Despite the poll, I'm going to go with 3Viewer. I think it fits the program better as it's not just a pack installer, but a download manager. Progress is going very well.

At this point, however, I'd like to get some artwork from anyone with the Skills of an Artist. :P I need an icon for the program itself as a transparent PNG. I'd also like an actual image for the Big Shiny Install Button. The BSIB doesn't actually have to say all that (the tooltip will), but it should at least say "Install" on it somewhere. The image would have to be a transparent PNG. There'd need to be different images for the following states:

Standard (What it normally looks like)
Disabled (Can't be clicked)
Pressed (The mouse is clicking it and the mouse button is still being held down)
Rollover (The mouse is hovering over the button)

Hopefully you all can come up with something much better than I can. :D

ETA: Also, a "DO NOT PRESS THIS BUTTON" image... :)

At this point, however, I'd like to get some artwork from anyone with the Skills of an Artist.

I do Teh Art. I'd make you something, but I'd be worried that you'd end up choosing some generic clip art in the end anyway  :P

* lamenting the failure of Pack Peeper, despite its success. Fake democracy is fake.

On a serious note, glad to hear progress is going well. Looking muchly forward to using this tool.

Here is the standard button image. Let me know what you think. (http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e219/Astrocreep2046/3viewer-standard.png)

I threw together some 'install' buttons. If you want them (or a variation on them) let me know.

What do you think of 3D glasses as an image (maybe with plumbob-shaped lenses)?

Here is another rendition as well as all versions necessary. I have all of them larger, transparent, and on separate files. Just let me know if you want them.

Oh I do like those buttons! More differentiated than the previous set and very appealing to look at, plus they have a real sims theme.

Hey jfade, I'd be keen to do some testing, are you going to let us know in this thread when it starts, or do you want us to check at your place?

You also have a "modify" button that means you don't need to double post.

Here is yet another variation, only slight this time. I added an accent around the inside edge of the circle. Once again, I have these transparent, larger, and in separate files. Let me know if you want them.

I do like those. Could you email me the transparent PNGs please? jfade AT djssims DOT com.

Yes, I'll post here when it starts. I anticipate beginning testing on release day. There's one issue I'm having at the moment though, I haven't yet figured out how the Launcher installs presets. It does something goofy with them. Otherwise, everything works great. I'll let you all know more soon. :)

Yep, I just realized.

And yet, you did it again immediately to respond to me. You need to learn you a book, son.

Whatever. Perhaps, you should learn to relax and don't call me son.

Don't have Riverview yet, but I bet it won't work. They probably did something sneaky about it. :P

In case you missed, it's available in TS3 Store thread now. Though we can't make it work properly for now.

Riverview, and all DLC from the EA site, is in a compressed DBPP package file format. This is most likely to prevent users from simply cloning it, renaming it, and putting it up for download. None of the existing package tools will currently be able to view or edit these.

Correct. Chances are that we might not be able to install any of the store content without the Launcher at any point. Though I'm still really hoping we find ways to install all other types of content without the Launcher...

Have you heard of anyone making any progress on this, Echo? This OneGiantLumpPackage.dbc thing is ridiculous...

I know one person has successfully decoded it, and that it is just the header/index which is encrypted, but said person has chosen not to make the discovery public (presumably for legal reasons). :) (No, it's not me. Like I could figure that out???)

Well no, I mean like presets (recolors) for instance that a user makes in game and then uploads to the exchange or they upload the Sims3Pack they exported to their site. Currently the Launcher takes the recolor and removes the manifest, changes the instance numbers of the XML and PNG, and then shoves it into dbcdb0.dbc or something like that in the DCCache folder. The dbcdb0.dbc file also contains an index resource of some sort that I haven't yet figured out. The Launcher does the same for patterns, but patterns can be extracted and stuck into the Mods/Packages folder and will show up in the game just fine (but not as custom content, acts as if it's EA made content.) If you do this for presets, though, it won't work. The PNG image will overwrite the default game thumbnail of the item, but you won't be able to select it to use it. That's what I'm referring to, has someone figured out a way to install presets without using the Launcher?

In theory we'll have the same problem with Sims3Packs that are created of objects and CAS Parts people make once that time comes, but I figure we'll cross that bridge when we come to it...
