Title: M&G carpet failure
Post by: LadyFu on 2008 November 24, 18:31:03
It's my first posting here and I'm german, so call me donkey if there is something I've posting wrong.

A few days ago I bought Mansion & Gardenstuff Pack and I really said "yeah, what a awesome carpet", when I saw one of the 2 carpets, which were part of M&G. But I was disappointed by putting the carpet in my Sims' living room (look at the picture below)

See, at the carpet's ends? One side is without this white ... hmm ... I call them flitters ;D
You guys are as awesome as the inventing of chocolate, so please! Can someone fix this nasty failure?
I think, there is also something wrong with the shadows.

Oh, the tassels are missing! How lame.

I wonder, is there supposed to be a line down the middle of it, too?

Definitely bad. The rug appears correctly until you actually plop it down, then the fringe on one end changes to the base rug texture and that shadowing appears (it is actually a superimposed triangular pattern).

No idea if this applies in your situation, but this was posted at TS2 forum.
"You can't place rugs using the new cheat or it will bork the texture, so make sure you are not using the "quartertileplacement" cheat or the "snapobjectstogrid" cheat."

It happens without the new cheats.  It's a simple EAxis FAIL.

I noticed it too.   Unfortunately, I'm not awesome enough to fix it.

What, you wanted the new crappack to not only have items, but to have items that actually work?

Some nerve you have, buster!

It would be weirder if all the objects actually worked correctly.

Yea, actually.  It would.

It seems as if the game thinks the "quartertileplacement" cheat is being used when you place the rug. Selecting it in buy mode, the rug appears fine and normal, until it is actually placed on the floor. Then it moves over just a bit, borks the texture and loses the fringe on one side.

The "setquartertileplacement" cheat doesn't apply to the in game rugs, they're always moved a full tile. Havelock says: "Rug texinfo Mesh and texinfo UV map is borked." in the L&P: Mansion and Garden Stuffeths thread so I'm betting someone awesome will be fixing or telling us to fix it soon.

Same thing happens in my game.  The fringe show before I place them, but once on the floor they vanish.
I wonder if this is related to the graphics bug that makes the stepping stone "rug" lose it's 3D when placed.

Same thing happens if you place rugs diagonally :(

Gwill, in my game any rug with a 3D effect has NEVER held onto it once placed. I was always disappointed that the TSS clothing piles and the stepping stones you speak of look flat once placed.

bloodredtoe, rugs have never worked diagonally. The textures go all dark and screwed up. Pitty really.

The rug you have on the cursor while you place him and the rug who snaps on the ground are different meshes. The texinfo mesh which is the final rug when placed on ground is borked the uv map is not correct done.

Is there someone more awesome than me, who can fix it? 'Cause the rug could be nice without this stupid failure.

The Author of "Proper Life Stories Conversion" has fixed something similar before... You may want to seek his help.

Because there seems to be no fix of this problem, I decided to make the M&G-rug as a recolor of another carpet.
I used a rug from FreeTime as original and in game it looks good. See the ingame-screenshot below:

I want to share this solution with you, so download at mediafire: http://www.mediafire.com/?bjymng3ynw3
I also want to upload this at ModtheSims2.com, so search there for user LadyFu  ;)

Is this a standalone object that replaces the M&G rug or a color option under the FT rug?

Cheers for the temporary 'fix'

Why? You gave it to us already, duh! :P

It's a color option under the FT rug, so M&G isn't required for this ;)

I tried remapping this rug about a week ago. It was like a logic jigsaw puzzle! The preview mesh and the actual mesh have been built completely differently so the correct UV map cannot apply to the actual rug.

I managed to rebuild the rug so that it mapped correctly and it looked fantastic in Milkshape but upon putting it in the game it looked hideous. Most of it was invisible apart from the section I edited the most.

I still have the file if anyone is interested in taking a look?

Nice work on the recolour though LadyFu

My favourite rug for texture is still the 4esf shag rug.  That looks great in my game.  http://www.4eversimfantasy.net/bedroom6.htm  It's free.  There are recolours around the site, but that's the nicest in my book.  I just wish all the rugs I downloaded in base game days showed up in rugs not other deco.  If Echo's meshes are updated to show in the rugs category, I've missed out on it.

Can you just re-categorize it using the categorizor from simwardrobe?  There's probably a better way to do so using SimPe, but the categorizor is efficient and easy.

I haven't got that.  Guess I'll check it out..  But so many people downloaded those meshes that I was hoping someone had done a 'fixed' set.

I managed to make a fix by using the texinfo gmdc from another rug that were mapped similar and changing name and instance number. Also did some slight changes to the mapping.

EDIT: Moved here (http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,14421.0.html)

I shall download now and report back with results the next time I fire up my game. Which should hopefully be later today.

These show under Rugs.  The toilet mat is not included.

Goggalor, the fix works perfectly and looks great. No more weirdly shaded triangles as well as a properly mapped texture image! Fantastic!  ;D

Thank you everyone!  Are you going to put these fixes somewhere other people will find them?  Peasantry would be good.  I still need a fix for that 4esf rug, guess I could actually ask the creator...

Ask and you shall receive... I've got too many rugs to count, all binned correctly, so let me know if there were any others you fancied.

Yeah, it's probably a good idea. I'll move the M&G fix there.

Thanks Rosenshyne!  Sounds like I've found a fellow rug fanatic!  I've still got some not binned correctly, but haven't worked out which ones.  I thought they all used the echo/windkeeper mesh apart from TSR, but that's obviously not true.

The M&G fix is definitely Peasantry material, but the others are nice to have as well. Maybe we could put all the fixed rug meshes in there too?

My favorite decorating scheme is to throw a bunch of overlapping rugs all over the place, so the more I have, the better. Unfortunately, that ruins the textures on some rugs. :( Next on my list of things to learn is changing footprints; it annoys me no end when a 4x5 rug has a 1 square footprint.
