Is there anyway to make the portrait stop randomly changing every 45 seconds???  Its driving me nuts!!

I like this feature now I have got used to it-saves getting them to 'change appearance' everythime I do change their appearance.

I just hate some of those horrible poses. Yuck.

Exactly. If there was a way to weed out the fugly poses, I wouldn't mind that "feature" at all.

Post by: Sagana on 2008 September 19, 10:02:23
I like it too. If I don't like a pose, I just change it with the lot debugger. Or send them outside.

I had a vampire and it's really funny to see him change to all the different vampirish poses every time someone called him or had him come over or whatever. Just interesting to see what he'd be doing next as I haven't played with vampires all that much.

The problem is that I hate most of the poses (in fact, it's only two adult poses per gender I can stand). My lot debuggers/clothing tools have been moved from a hidden spot to a central position because I need to regenerate the portraits so often now.

Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Faizah on 2008 September 19, 10:52:20
I hate that too. My problem is that, after a long play session, especially one with lots of re-rolling of portraits, the textures all become incredibly blurry, and look like crap. All details are set to high, but that doesn't help. I had gotten into the habit of re-rolling to get a crisp portrait at the start of the session, if it was blurry from the last time, but now there's no point, they go blurry again before long.

Weeding out bad poses is potentially doable, simply overwrite the animation resources pertaining to the bad poses with one of the good poses.

Why the HELL did they code this into game? It is NOT useful. EVER. And makes me think my game asplode.

Thing is, they change pretty much constantly in winter. I hate it. Every time someone's in or out of a door, portrait change. Every time they take a shower, portrait change. I'd prefer to go back to just using the Lot Debugger. The "feature" is clunky and causes slight lag.

Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Alex on 2008 September 19, 15:55:04
Apparently the actual "feature" is supposed to be the portrait changing every time you plan a new everyday outfit. Instead, it changes every time you change into an everyday outfit, which is hugely annoying.

Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: coralleane on 2008 September 19, 17:18:10
Electrocution is the worst - the portrait is flashing constantly during it, since each switch between the skeleton outline/normal appearance results in the portrait being regenerated.  My computer doesn't run the game too badly most of the time, but that slowed it right down.

Didn't someone in the bork thread say that the relationship panel and the phone book were taking forever to load due to having to get the most up-to-date portraits?

I've had this happen one several occasions, especially when they have large list's of sims.

Overwriting the fugly poses seems to work great. If anyone is interested, I've posted a "How To (http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,13160.0.html)" in the Peasantry.

I cannot say if overwriting all poses with the same animation will improve the lag problem, though. Thankfully, I haven't experienced any lag with all the different poses, either.

Hmm, it is possible the portraits regeneration crashed my game due to lightning strikes. I was on a vacation community lot, with really bad weather and hot springs = multiple lightning strikes on sims. Which eventually led to the game crashing. This 'feature' seems like a VBT.
I realize this can't be stopped all together, but can it be made to not do this all the time? I don't know exactly what kind memory clog we're talking about, but it certainly doesn't look good.

Question: does it somehow regenerate portraits even for non playable sims? Because that would be horribly bad.

Imagine the LAG... My computer would say "fuck you" and die if every single portrait was animated. Animated portraits for 8 sims and some NPCs is a lot.

I've also noticed portraits changing simply whenever a sim is loaded, including whenever they simply come onto a lot (as a visitor). DO NOT WANT.

Well, that would certainly explain the increased laggage/random crashes I've had on vacation lots; with sims coming and going all the time. The extra lightning strikes on 4 different hot springs didn't exactly help either.  ::) Seems to me like a path to BFBVFS.

I just had this depressing thought: that eaxis effectively borked the game so it will crash all the time with no hope of recovery - and that eaxis will ignore the borkage because they want people to buy sims 3 instead.   :(

I normally don't play with OFB businesses much but I had a Sim with the lifetime want for 5 level ten's, so I thought I'd give it a shot.  He now has all the perks.. including the one that means you can call every single Sim in the neighbourhood.  And my neighbourhood is large, to put it mildly.  Loading that phonebook, especially the first time, was 'fun'.  Luckily he doesn't use the phone much since his social is nearly constantly green thanks to spending pretty much his whole life running businesses.

That's great, but I'm not sure how to make the .c file and the .exe dizzy made work. It's probably not compatible with Vista.  :'(

Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Inge on 2008 September 23, 16:06:29
I have worked out that the portrait is wiped every time a sim inits, resets or errors.  I think it's not so much that the game wants to make a new one than that the reset wipes out the old one, and provided your sim is in play at the time the game knows it has to generate a portrait for him.

That explains why there are so many missing in SimPE.  You know when you add hacks to the game, or remove them, you go into the game and find some families standing to attention by their beds?  Well that means they were reset as they reached a line of code you have removed or replaced by a hack or other custom object.   The ones without pictures in SimPE are ones who have had their stacks reset but who you haven't played since, in order to regenerate their portraits.

'splain. Are you using the cracked .exe?

I'm using Dizzy's .exe hack and it's working perfectly. I do have to regenerate portraiture for kids on age transition or their old age pic shows in other sims' relationship panels. No big deal...I normally do that anyway.

Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Alex on 2008 September 25, 17:47:02
Well when I first did it, it loaded normally. I entered a sort of test family, and the computer crashed pretty much as soon as it had loaded and the actual lot/sims appeared (I don't think the crash is related though as I've been getting it on Spore as well).

When I rebooted and tried to load the game, that thing came up. Replaced crack with a new one and tried the .exe hack again and this thing still comes up. I don't know what could have gone wrong, seeing as it was fine before it crashed. I hope I don't have to reinstall as that would mean having to download the torrent again (which I deleted to make room for bloody Spore).

Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Crash on 2008 September 25, 19:55:33
I had to try a couple of times before I got the 'file is patched' message. I put the .c file and the .exe in a folder somewhere, then I copied the latest no-cd .exe to the bin folder. It was exactly the same .exe, but somehow that got it to work - when I ran dizzy's fix again I got the correct message. I have Vista, which means I have .net 2.0 installed (I also have .net 1.1 installed)  dunno if that's got anything to do with it.  Works like a charm.

I don't think they're done milking the TS2 teet just yet. They'll probably be working the Double Deluxe, Super Whammola Deluxe, and/or Obligatory Complete Collection angle for the next year or so - not to mention, they won't want us to abandon TS2 anytime soon, now that they've started selling their rejected crap in that online store.

I can read fine thanks  :P :D and I know the original hack is by Dizzy . But I also know this amalgamation of the hack and the no cd exe is by Xiomberg so that's why I'm asking him . Dizzy's hack itself may barely need updating , if at all because it may patch the patched AL exe just as easily and successfully as the unpatched AL exe . However , a new NOcd part of Xiomberg's amalgamation of the 2 hacks will DEFINITELY be needed and that's where the pitfalls are . Because there are so many No CD's for games that for those who have hardly ever used them it's hard know which are the reliable sites for the good genuine ones and which are the sites that carry the virus riddled pieces of shit . Xiomberg obviously knows his is reliable though , or he wouldn't have posted it here so I put my trust in him and I'm prepared to do so again if and when he makes a patched AL version of this  :)

And thanks Xiomberg , for combining the two hacks for other people and thanks to Dizzy for the hack in the first place  :)

Not really borked.  I think that the problem is that he hasn't got the no-cd yet, which meant that he has to patch the actual game.  Unfortunately, it seems that he can only do that when the game is in memory (ie, every time that the game is run).

Wait for a while... I'm hoping that he'll have a fix for the patched no-cd soon.  Since it's a no-cd, he should be able to do a proper patch on the EXE again.

Which link are you having problems with?

The M&G link in the post immediately above yours works just fine.  I just downloaded it and extracted the EXE without any problem.

At that point, you just backup your old Sims2EP9.exe (rename it to Sims2EP9.bkp), and add the new EXE to that folder.  You'll be using the new EXE to run the game.

If you are using the launcher to run the game, you'll have to fix your shortcut to run directly from the game EXE instead.  Here are some instructions on how to do that:

Something Apartment Life added which I had wanted gone was the constant hammering on thumbnails. Eventually came a way to fix it, although not the way I would have preferred: by modifying the exe file. This is always a last resort, but it is sometimes necessary (as in this instance).

This hack modifies your no-CD cracked exe file (TSBin\Sims2EP8.exe) so make sure you back it up first! If you don't use a no-CD crack, then perhaps it's about time to start. :)

Note: The upx instructions only apply to the noCD for patch1 (r187).

To use the thumb3 (for r187), download thumb-old and unpack the Sims2 executable with upx (see http://upx.sourceforge.net). Copy upx.exe to the TSBin folder and perform the following in a cmd box:

upx -d Sims2EP8.exe

Then double-click on thumb3.exe.

Downloads:

thumb-old.zip = older versions of this hack: Attached File  thumb-old.zip (11.63K)
thumb3b.zip = patch for Sims2 AL + patch2 (r194): Attached File  thumb3b.zip (2.72K)

thumb4.zip = patch for M&G: Attached File  thumb4.zip (2.73K)

You could try downloading them at SimsAsylum:
http://simsasylum.com/tfm/index.php?/topic/635-dizzys-mods-for-sims-2/

However, I think that Avast is going to complain no matter where you download them from.  After all, these are unofficial patches that modify your game executables... that's exactly what viruses do.

I'm afraid that I can't guarantee that they are safe.  I downloaded them from Dizzy before they disappeared from the internet and my anti-virus didn't complain at that time.

[Update:] If you'd like, I could upload just the source code and you could compile them yourself.

Thanks - you were right, Avast did complain about that too. I've taken the risk! :P

Does someone have already patched Sims2EP9.exe? Using the patch doesn't work with the ultimate collection because it has a different registry path than the normal game version. I was thinking about changing the paths in the code of the fix and compiling it, but given that I don't know the registry values of the normal game version (I don't know the difference between that and the ultimate collection values) I'd prefer to not take a risk of breaking something.

Edit: Nevermind, I did decide to edit the code and it worked.
