Title: Mailbox problems with AM installed
Post by: Death-Jester on 2012 November 21, 22:36:58
I've just reinstalled Sims 3 with all the expansions. I used AwesomeMod from the beginning, but only just came across a bug.
Whenever my sim 'gets mail' from the mailbox, the game semi-freezes. I don't know if you have a proper term for it, but the sim freezes, the weather effects continue, trees sway, all that stuff continues, but the game is kind of... I dont know... paused. I can't click on anything, my cursor stays the same no matter what I hover over. I have to Alt-Tab out then close the process in Task Manager. I tried using the debug to delete the mailbox and place a new one, but it happened again the next time there was mail to collect.

If I remove Awesomemod, then I can access the mailbox fine, and I can save, put AM back on, and continue playing. But it happens every time I use the mailbox now, so I can't keep up the song and dance every 5 minutes.

I tried searching, but I haven't played TS3 for a long time, so I don't know if I am searching for the right terms.

I have had trouble with letterboxes as you describe too. I ctrl-clicked (or ctrl-shift-clicked, can't remember) on the mailbox and opened its inventory. It was full of boxes of omni-seeds and bills to pay. I nuked them all and the mailbox works again. I'm inclined to think it's the omni-seeds and not AM, but I also suspect AM is not getting the bills paid because of the blockage.

I tried looking for the inventory you mentioned (tried Shift-Click, Ctrl-Shift-Click) and couldn't find it.

Do you use Awesomemod with debug mode on?

Also, did you try ctrl-click, which was the first suggestion I made.

Title: Re: Mailbox problems with AM installed
Post by: Death-Jester on 2012 November 22, 10:21:30
Yeah, I tried all different combinations of Ctrl, Alt and Shift.
I also tried with testingcheatsenabled on, and buydebug on. I got an option to 'Nuke', and another time (I think Shift-Click) gave me some cheat options, but even then the only option for the mailbox was delete, everything else was the standard cheats that come with testingcheatsenabled.

Edit: I should mention that I cannot send Love Letters any more. The option is greyed out, and when I hover over it, it says there are no available writing surfaces, despite there being available surfaces in my house.
Also, there was no problem when I started playing with this sim, I could use the mailbox with no problems (sending/receiving love letters, mailing gems/minerals to be cut/smelted etc.)

Edit 2: I nuked the mailbox, then got another one in by using buydebug. It was working fine for a while, I could send and receive mail, but it just happened again.

I guess it's probably debug interactions (setconfig debuginteractions true) which brings up EA's debugging commands and then it should be ctrl-shift-click.

Ahh thank you!
I just tried it, and I have 3 omni seeds in the mailbox. Looks like that could be the cause. Any way I can get them, or should I just delete them?

Edit: I put them in my inventory then nuked them, but it seems every day or so the postman delivers more. Is there a way I can give myself an omni seed to try and stop them arriving in the post?

Title: Re: Mailbox problems with AM installed
Post by: witch on 2012 November 22, 19:11:31
I had to nuke all the seeds I found, they had no interactions. Haven't checked the letterbox since.

Did you find a pile of unpaid bills? 'Cos that would be the only link to AM.

Title: Re: Mailbox problems with AM installed
Post by: Death-Jester on 2012 November 22, 20:43:29
I did occasionally find bills, but they seemed to be love letters that are mislabelled.
I've started a new sim in a custom world (Union Cove), so I'll see if it happens again.

That's interesting. I had a mail box die on me. I could still pay bills but every time I tried to collect the contents of it the game would freeze - permenantly. I thought it was just an imaginary friend that had arrived (I couldn't think of anything else it might be), but I had sent a love letter out earlier. I shall have to have a look.

PS - removing all the omni seeds and multiple 'bill' versions re-enabled the get mail option. My mail box works again - where the fuck did those seeds come from? None of my Sims in this house are gardeners.

I had this problem in my game, though at the time I was unable to figure out the solution to it and I no longer have that save.  I don't have Supernatural or Seasons, but I my game is fully patched and the only mod I use is AM.  Was the ability to send love letters included with the patch?  Because if so, I've never seen that option in my game.  And if not, I can verify that love letters are not the problem.

once the omni seeds (that no one ordered) are in the sim's inventory, how do you destroy them? I can't click on them at all. I have to use the 'take all' button from the mail box to get them out.

This isn't an AwesomeMod issue.  I've had the Omni Seed issue and the "No available writing surface" issue happen in my game too, and I don't use Awesomemod.

Oh right. It's weird that if I remove AM the problem goes away though.
My new sim now has the same problem too. He just hit 5 in Gardening, and the first time he accessed the mailbox the game froze. I haven't checked to see if there is an omniseeds in the mailbox.

I checked, and yup, once again, omni plants. Notice I said omni PLANTS, not seeds.

Thanks.

So, I saved the game right before going to the mailbox, took out my entire mods folder, and my sim pulled out a random present. I've taken out AM and my mods listed as hacks, but left all my other custom content in and still have the omni plant issue. I'm not sure at this point what is causing the issue, but whatever it is, it's connected to the 'no wedding presents' issue for me. Will do further testing.

edit: *facepalm*  I had an extra awesome.package hidden in my skins folder. Confirmed that this is an awesomemod issue for me.

I have the debuginteractions enabled, and I don't get any options when I click on the omni plants in my inventory. There's five of them there, now.

The only custom content, other than AM, is the no intro mod, and loads of store content in monthly .package files, plus 2 custom worlds. The custom worlds weren't installed when I first had the problem. Also both my sims were single, so no wedding presents to speak of.

Either do what Madame Mim suggested, or use the AM Custom Config, and turn on Debug mode, which will then give you the 'Nuke' option.

Actually that won't work. You need the debug on to get them into your 'pocket', but that doesn't enable deleting them. You need put in the other config to enable deleting them.

I got the excact issue. Quite annoying when you're at 3rd generation and you never saved once.
I'm fairly new to Sims 3. What are these Omni-seeds, and how do i avoid them ?

I am investigating this, but can't reproduce it. Someone send me a save where their mailbox is jammed like this.

If you make it to three generations without ever saving your game, you deserve to have it blow up in your face.

Ok, got the bug again last night. It's on the custom world Union Cove. I put all the files from that save's folder into a zip, here: http://www.filefactory.com/file/7bg9aeb0ibzt/n/autosave0_sims3_zip

Pescado won't load a custom world to test, he'll need a save from a regular hood, most likely.

Well, I feel better about the fact that I'd over-written my broken mailbox saves as it was in a custom world too.

Title: Game freezes when sim tries to fetch mail from mailbox
Post by: Gwill on 2012 November 30, 12:21:44
I hope someone can figure out what's causing this.
Every time a sim goes to get mail the game freezes completely.  It doesn't crash, but hangs there, animations continue, water ripples, leaves rustle, and butterflies flutter, but time is not moving and nothing happens.  I have to force the program closed from task manager.
Other interactions with the mailbox seems to be working, the mail man can deliver, faerie traps can be set, metals smelted, and omni seeds ordered.
As far as I can tell it only affects one household, but since that's the only household I play, it's a problem.
It's been going on since before I installed Seasons, but it might have started right after the last patch.
I've tried taking out ALL custom content except for awesomemod, and it still happens.  I'll try without awesomemod if someone can recommend an alternative safe noCD fix.  I've tried resetting and replacing the mailbox; no good.

As for computer specs, let's just say my computer is awesome, I can't check the exact specifications at the moment, but I have 24 bloody gigabytes of RAM.

What else can I try?

Edit:  By the way, when testing faerie trap, my sim was able to attempt to get mail and trigger the trap without crashing, but when he went back to fetch the actual mail freeze happened.  So there's apparently something wrong with the mail itself.

Twallan's No-CD, from NRAAS Industries, with 3Booter from here to bypass the launcher.  It sounds like your save has gotten corrupted, if it's only affecting the one family.  You could try his Error Trap too, see if it catches anything.

HOLY ERROR LOGS, BATMAN!

OK, it does not freeze when I took awesome mod out, but the stream of errors was quite unsettling.  It took half a dozen turns to the mailbox to get all the mail out because of sims reseting. There was an awful lot of unpayable bills, mountains of omni seeds (which I sincerely doubt I ever ordered) in gift-wrapped boxes, a few reward certificates, and about a hundred (literally) love letters and creepy gifts from stalkers.

Is there any possible way to nuke the content of the mailbox?

Sorry, I just made a thread about this in Pudding, it didn't occur to me that it could be an awesome fault.  Feel free to merge thread.

Here you go, Pes:

Good old Sunset Valley.  Lots of CC, but it loads fine without it.

Edit:
OK, I've been doing some more experimenting.
First of all, since bills and omniplants seems to be main characters in this story I dropped the No Bills Ever trait from my sim, and nuked her gardening skill.  Neither seems to have made any noticeable difference.

This is what my inventory looked like when I first managed to empty the mailbox:
(http://i.imgur.com/0egKQ.png)
It's bills and giftboxes all the way down.
Hovering over the bills it says "bill", but there are no interactions, they can't be paid, and they can't be moved or deleted without using setconfig MoveInventoryObjects true.  The gifts say "Omni plant" and can likewise not be interacted with.
I experimented with debug-clicking on the mailbox and using View Inventory.
First I tried deleting all the bills and letting a sim get mail: Crash.
Then I deleted the omniplants and fetched mail: No crash.
Also the bills turns out not to be bills, but in fact more damned love letters.

So it's pretty safe to say that the unsolicited omniplant shipments are at the root of this evil.

I deleted all the letters and the game continued as before for about a day or two, then a new shipment of plant spam arrived.  I just keep getting new ones; sometimes three or four a day.
I'll do some more experiments and see what happens.

I just had the mailbox error crop up again in an unawesome game.  Deleting the mailbox and replacing it from BuyDebug apparently fixed the error -- my bills and mail started coming again, as normal -- but I'm not sure what made the error happen.  For the record, I don't have the Buzzler mod witch and Gwill mentioned.

It does seem to be related to gardening, since the last patch.  I was wondering whether it was because I only have EPs up to Generations.  There is a jump bug reported (which my game has got as well) where the telescope stops working if you don't have Seasons.

Same issue with the "semi-freeze".  I nuked and replaced the mailbox, and I also have the "omni plant" immovable spam in inventory.  I'll try the setconfig step.

Awesomemod is what's causing the freeze, but it might be innocent of the omni plant spawning.

The "setconfig moveinventoryobjects true" approach seems to function as a workaround - at least they can get their mail if you simply view inventory on the mailbox and then "take all".  At that point you still have to remove all the omni plant boxes (every sim day when the mailman comes) and nuke them.  It's a bit of an omni plant apocalypse.

Title: Re: Mailbox problems with AM installed
Post by: jezzer on 2012 December 09, 13:34:22
I actually got unusable, undeletable omni plant seeds from the Adventure Board while on vacation the first time this glitch happened.  When I clicked the board to check for available adventures, the "Get Mail" option was available, and I clicked it out of curiosity, because I've never gotten mail while on vacation before.  Suddenly I had phantom Omni seeds in my inventory.

An interesting side note: if the game stuffs a foreign mailbox full of Omni Plants and you return home, they end up in your inventory. At that point I was unable to get them out of my inventory even with Ctrl-Shift-Click->Nuke->Object -- but using NRaas->Master Controller->Basic->Sell allowed me to remove them.

Happened with me as well.  However, I have no gardening skill.

The only thing clogging the box is creepy stalker gifts, and not very many of them.

Awesomemod is the only mod installed.

If the game freeze happens, it will happen consistently.  Reverting to an earlier autosave and getting the mail then usually works, and it generally a love letter which seems to be completely meaningless to the gameplay anyways.

Can we have an Awesome Option for "No Moar Stalker Mail"?

***********update**************

I did find a work-around that can be reproduced reliably.  While you may always select "Get Mail", if you do so when the little flag is down the game will hard freeze.  If you do so while the flag is up, everything is kosher and the mail clears out nicely.  Wait for the flag to go up before taking the goodies.

I have selected the get mail option when the flag was down and nothing happened.  My sim simply didn't go to the mail box, as there was obviously nothing in there, and the game didn't freeze either.  I selected the option several times and the game continued to play just fine.

I suspect the "omni plants" of not being omni plants, but rather those creepy stalker gifts.  I seem to remember there being such a thing (paintings and flowers?), along with the love letters, before this started happening in my game.  I haven't had any since.
The hover text says omni plant, but that doesn't have to mean anything as the hover text on the love letters says "bill".

This is a work around for when something *IS* in your mailbox and the flag is down = "Don't check your mail when there is something in your mailbox and the flag is down."

Nothing will happen in your game if you check the mail when there is no mail, as there is no bad mail to lock up your game.  Did I miss some obvious thing here with your observation?

Title: Re: Mailbox problems with AM installed

This isn't caused by awesome mod, it's an EA glitch. It happens when a sim sends you a gift(omniplant) or letter(bills) then stops existing before your sim collects the mail.

Twallan's Overwatch(newest version) will stop it from happening when you collect the mail, but the game still force-shoves them in your inventory if you don't collect the mail manually before leaving a vacation world. If you forget and they spawn anyway, you can use Master Controller to shove them back in the mailbox(click mailbox>nraas) then use "get mail" on the mailbox as normal.

If you don't travel, Overwatch will fix it for you completely, it's just that obnoxious "Oh noes! You forgot to collect the mail while on holiday! Don't worry, I shoved it in your inventory anyway - You're welcome, by the way!" crap that you need to watch for.

I was given to undestand that the 'Omniplant' gift boxes were in some way related to having too many large stacks of collectibles (and some suggestion that it is specifically triggered by uncut gems and/or unsmelted ores) in your Sim's inventory. I have only got the base game and Ambitions, patched with the 1.42 patch, but the 'Omniplants' only started to appear in my mailbox after a ridiculous spate of obsessive collecting on my part. I do not have any mods or CC in my game.

Who stops existing? The sending sim?
The sender, yes. Not existing as in a family emigrating, a homeless sim that gets cleaned up, etc. Presumably just whenever the game deletes a sim for whatever reason(dead sims are fine if they're not deleted). A long visit to China without collecting mail during the trip usually stuffs my sim's inventory with bills and omniplants when they go home, but I think that's just co-incidence as that sim receives a lot of gifts/love notes in general(maxing the charisma skill challenges seems like a bad idea now  ::) ). I can provide an infected save if you want it, it's in barnacle bay though.

Twallan might be a better source of information to be honest, there's a few posts about it on his site, but they're a bit scattered around. This post has some information and an easy way to trigger the omniplant gifts if you want to test it yourself: https://nraas.wikispaces.com/message/view/Chatterbox/58539624#58551384

This isn't caused by awesome mod, it's an EA glitch. It happens when a sim sends you a gift(omniplant) or letter(bills) then stops existing before your sim collects the mail.

I find this very hard to reconcile with the sheer number of boxes I keep getting.  Household of three adult sims receive something like two to four boxes a day.  No way are townlies evaporating at that rate.

I was given to undestand that the 'Omniplant' gift boxes were in some way related to having too many large stacks of collectibles (and some suggestion that it is specifically triggered by uncut gems and/or unsmelted ores) in your Sim's inventory.
I have an awful lot of adventure relics stored away.  I'll get rid of those and see what happens.  At the moment I don't have all that many unrefined gems, but I'll clear the dog's inventory and cut the ones I have.

On a completely unrelated note: From what I see, love letters are not delivered by the mail man; they just appear out of nowhere.

Update: No discernible difference detected.  Still getting tons of bad presents.

I've been having the same issue. I'd had it on one family, and it irritated me so much that I started a new game. Now the freeze happens every time I check the mail and I have to end the process from Task Manager.

AwesomeMod is my only mod. My Sims don't have many collectibles stored, nor do any of them have gardening skill so no omnis. Before the glitch started happening, I was getting anywhere from 1 - 3 love letters a day for my parent Sim, who is also a celebrity so she was receiving random stalker gifts too. I did receive that creepy imaginary friend for a now-toddler and never checked the mail, so I figure that's stuck in there now. In addition, the flag is now always up on the mailbox so I can't test anything regarding the flag status - but I've never been able to check my mail with the flag down before, anyway. I have also not had any weirds happen with the Adventure Board.

I've been trying to make a mod to stompinate the creepy love letters and stalker gifts, but so far I've been unable to find the correct resources.  Does anyone have any tips on what to look for?

I'd nearly bet my farm that it this bug has to do solely with the new stalker love letters with Seasons, interacting with...something.  Since I've installed all the KT store fixes, the problem is gone and hasn't come back however, no idea if this was voodoo or had something to do with how the stalker mail interacted with a store object somehow.

Ditto. My sim received a "Missing obj ressource" big white box as a Christmas present, proof that store items can be chosen. I think the gift was a sun because at that time I just had installed the greenhouse set and was waiting for the CCmerge update.

I used this hack (http://scarletsims-creations.blogspot.no/2012/11/no-more-date-callslove-letters-142.html) to get rid of the gifts, love letters and date calls.  My game instantly became considerably more pleasant.

On an unrelated note:  Wedding gifts also appear in the mailbox as omni plant, but do not crash the game.

Sigh... okay, sorry, I was frustrated and I posted without saying anything helpful, I realize that.

I'm glad that the suggested mod worked for somebody else but it doesn't appear to be up to date with the most recent patch and is not working for me. Are you running a game patched up to 1.47 and this mod is still working for you?
Anyway, I did have a thought (just the one), I have twallen's error trap installed, and though I don't necessarily understand exactly what it does, I do know that I lose opportunities related to sims when errortrap mentions them. I will get a message saying that I can't complete my opportunity because the sim related to my opportunity is no longer around, which is weird because they definitely are. Is it possible that sims are being reset by error trap, and that maybe when they are reset, this mucks up the gifts they have sent out? If what Idle said is true, and this mail issue is caused by sims being deleted or leaving, maybe it could be caused by a sim being reset, too. If everyone else is using errortrap, or if perhaps there is something similar built into awesomemod, maybe this is the source of the problem and can be disabled.

Thoughts?

I have been busy with other things lately, but yes, I seem to be having crashes after the patch.

I haven't really tried my hands at updating mods before, but it seems to be working.  See attachment.

So what is the state now with the mailbox problem and awesome mod.

I read through all posts and would like to add my observations.

1. It does not matter much that the mailbox contents is named "Omni-plant" or whatever. You do not receive anything related to the Omni-Plant by mail. It appears to be the internal naming for mailbox contents.

2. The bug seems indeed be related to the sending sim of a mail disappearing from the world. This will happen without any mod installed. However, without any mod installed I noticed in such a case: with awesomemod installed game freeze, without sim aborting the mailbox access (I had to delete and install new mailbox using debug commands to escape from this situation). I dropped awesomemod and installed a couple of nraas mods, including overwatch, and now I notice an overwatch error every now and then when accessing the mailbox - and with overwatch I was able to reset a bugged mailbox to a proper state by accessing it.

So my conclusion is that EA poses error situations to the mailbox by sending mails and deleting sending sims afterwards, and awesomemod does not like that and freezes the game in such a case (causing it to go into an endless loop in some of its threads).

I am having the same problem in my freshly installed game. Is there still need of a safe game that contains no custom content?

2. The bug seems indeed be related to the sending sim of a mail disappearing from the world.

Even besides the grammar, that's not right.  When my sims receive 17 boxes of crap in the mail it can't possibly all be from mysteriously vanished sims.  If so, the "vanishing issue" would be very noticeable.

Please excuse any error in my english, it's not my mother tongue.

The mailbox of my sims is filled twice a sim day with love letters/love presents. The average number of such mail in the box per day is 5. Mail senders include sims you never met - the only precondition seems to be that the attraction system paired them with your sim. If only one of those mails is sent by a sim that vanished afterwards your box will be broken and awesomemod will put your game into an endless loop. Overwatch will get rid of the trouble-making mail and will give you the rest into your inventory. Plain EA code will cancel the "get mail" action and reset your sim next to the mailbox, leaving the box in its broken state.

That is what I observed so far.

Doesn't this mean, the Mailbox is not the root cause, but the way this issue is manifested in a visible manner? This issue seems to start when the Attraction System comes into play. As I'm sure the modders have been able to identify and isolate. I seem to see some "turn off attraction" mods floating around or being discussed, if not here, then in other forums. I've been away and just catching up on Sims news, so ignore if this is already known; haven't read all threads on here as yet.

Mailbox is not the problem.  Love letters are the problem.

Ah, yes, I have had this problem too. I worked around it by not ever using the mailbox, lol. Stellar fix on my part. Whenever my sims come back from vacation they have like a dozen omni plants in their inventories that cannot be interacted with. Also if they have omni plants in their inventories, occasionally other things in their inventories will get stompinated/go missing mysteriously, which never happens to omni-plantless sims.

Seems to be successfully resolved with either the latest patch or University Life, both of which got installed earlier today.

eta: I spoke too soon... it happened again about a sim-week later.

Yup, same here, brand new sims in a brand new custom world for the University/1.50 update, and I got the mailbox freeze last night. I'll go back to using the no love letters mod and clean up my mailbox's inventory.

Hi, I was having this bug too and it was so annoying that I fixed it myself. (http://www.4shared.com/archive/Z7k6zj7I/awesomeMailFix.html) It should be put in the folder 'Overrides' to override the original AwesomeMod file.

What I changed:
Code:
//Sims3.Gameplay.Core.Mailbox
//Old
private void PreReturnHome()
{
    GameStates.PreReturnHome -= new GameStates.TravelCallback(this.PreReturnHome);
    Sim activeActor = Sim.ActiveActor;
    List<IGameObject> list = base.Inventory.FindAll<IGameObject>(false);
    bool flag = (list.Count > 0) || (this.mInvisibleObjectList.Count > 0);
    foreach (GameObject obj2 in list)
    {
        if (base.Inventory.TryToRemove(obj2))
        {
            if (obj2 is AttractionGift)
            {
                IAmPutInMailbox mailbox = obj2 as IAmPutInMailbox;
                if (mailbox != null)
                {

            else

I have a problem with my mailbox too. I see the post deliverer everytime and my mailbox shows always that something is inside it. But as soon I click on it, I can only send Love letters and spent for charities...
I believe something is inside the mailbox, but I can't get it out of there, since I have no options available. For some reason I also had a bug before this thing happened. The wife of my male Sim showed 4
people in her friendlist who were all flatmates. They also came to the house and lived there. Not all at once, always one of them came. If I sent him/her away a few days later the next one came. And I
did not invite them to be my flatmates. After that the mailbox problem began, I got no bills anymore, on love letter and since then everytime the post deliverer comes and puts something inside the mailbox,
I can't get it out of there :-(

This may be a coincidence but I'm sharing in case it's worth anything: When I had this issue (game "semi-freezing" when sim gets to the mailbox), I'd observed that I always had it on "Ultra Speed through current action" when the problem arises, so I tried having my sim Get The Mail again at Normal Speed, and that time it didn't freeze. I've been doing that from now on and so far I haven't had a problem.

The mailbox issue is indeed back and it crashed my game when in normal speed mode. So, once again, I will go back to using the love letter stomp mod.
