101  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: Share pix / vidz of THE HORROR here on: 2009 August 05, 20:06:19
I wouldn't call that bad parenting, just stupid lack of planning.  Let's potty train twins while dealing with a crying newborn!

She had the LTW of Surrounded by Family and had to get one more in before aging up. I moved the bed into the kid's room to see if they would woohoo there for the lulz.
I find newborns to be easy - just feed/snuggle/change diaper/put in crib when they start to cry. Toddlers are self-sufficient if you potty train them first and just put out a ton of books for them to read. All they need if an occasional feeding then it's just like a newborn: snuggle, change diaper, put in crib. I hardly ever teach to walk or talk in this family 'cuz I'm on the random generation of traits kick. I can handle 4 kids (two sets of twins) with one stay-at-home mom. Granted, she's got a moodlet manager to help me, er her, out.

To go with some prior bad parenting pics, I give you "try for baby with 2 infants in the room":

103  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: Patch 1.3 Released on: 2009 August 05, 06:31:48
The use of fruit for cooking seems to go in alphabetical order. When my sims' household ran out of apples, they started using grapes, and then limes for stuff like pancakes. As long as you make sure to have plenty of apples in the fridge, then the fruit-using meals should always use apples.
I think they're using the ingredients 1st in quality order then in the order they're stocked. I had Sims make melon and grape and yes even life fruit pancakes when plenty of apples were in the fridge. And Sims always prefer ingredients that are in their personal inventory.

That's how they do it. I've experimented around. This is what I've determined:
- Use inventory over fridge
- Use higher quality over lower quality
- Use first item of that quality in inventory list (since apples are usually the first fruit grown, they are usually the first fruit in the inventory or fridge, unless you move them or clean them out).

Example:
Inventory order:
Great Flame Fruit
Bad Apple
Perfect Life Fruit
Perfect Watermelon
Sim makes Life Fruit pancakes.

In order to keep the flame fruit bonus on all cooking sims, I make sure they have only a lower-quality flame fruit along with higher quality other fruits. That is if I let them make pancakes at all. Usually I just have them "eat" under the supreme commander.
104  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: I CANNOT install the new patch (1.3) UPDATE: skuversion.txt on: 2009 August 04, 07:54:51

They had withdraw the patch until further fix. See here: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/78656.page

Mac versions are borked. Oh teh surprise!

So I guess I'm happy that I have to run 1.2 and AwesomeMod by changing the date on my computer to 7/31 every time I play. I'm so torn, I want the Awesome Story Mode and such, but I don't want and can't get the Mac 1.3 patch (and I have never gotten the Unholy Hybrid to work). After reading your experiences Mahris I'm happy to be doing what I am for now. I caught myself looking at a PC at the store the other day thinking "just for gaming" and about shot myself on the spot.
105  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: Patch 1.3 Released on: 2009 August 02, 15:00:53
I have the Mac digital download version. There is no 1.3 patch for my version, EA admits on their site that they don't have one yet. So, since I can't get the Unholy Hybrid to work at all, I am going with previous AwesomeMod version (and not mentioning any bugs or problems) until I can figure out a way to patch. Even Mac patches on other sites don't work. Ugh. Any suggestions - either for getting the 1.3 patch somewhere that works for the dd version, or else to get the Unholy Hybrid to work - would be very welcome.
106  Awesomeware / AwesomeMod! / Re: Awesomod discussion/questions/helpful tips thread on: 2009 August 02, 10:36:14
Or else you can turn on debug commands (or is it debug interactions? I forget, I have them both on all the time) and shift-click the sim and select "modify traits for active sim" and you get the trait selector box. I found that to be much easier than 'addtrait' or 'droptrait' to use. I also use the shift-click to age-up the sims. I hate the fucking birthday cake.
107  Awesomeware / AwesomeMod! / Re: Indie Stone Now with added Awesomeness on: 2009 July 31, 19:38:20
AwesomeStoryMode will retain the gender preferences of your sims. Isn't that awesome? What's more, it will use the existing preference ratios of your actual neighborhood as the seed to determine the preferences of an uninitialized sim. So if your neighborhood is, say, 10% gay, then a random sim will have a 10% gay chance. If your neighborhood seems to be entirely gay, well, then, that's what you get. They will then presumably all go slowly extinct.

But they won't go extinct thanks to the JMP Same Sex Baby Factory at the Landgraab Science Center!

"For just $29.95 you too can have a genetic child with your same-sex love interest! Coming soon to a Mod near you!"

Edited to add: I'd actually like that for my legacy family - I'm playing a commitment issues centered family (among other issues with them) where almost every sproglet has been conceived at the science center. On the 4th generation and or the roughly 25 kids, about 20 have been from "try from baby in test chamber." It would be great to have a popup "order child with..." for this fambly instead of the current method.
108  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: Patch 1.3 Released on: 2009 July 31, 05:01:39

Thanks for these links, but for some reason they won't work with the direct download version (yeah, I know, I bought it ugh). There is bitching and moaning at the bbs about the direct download version needed a different patch that is not available yet. Do you know any workarounds or do you think I'm stuck waiting for EAxis to fix the latest fail?
109  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: Death at a Birthday Party on: 2009 July 30, 08:34:28
It seems like the old people wait for a party to conk out.  I've had parties where great aunts and grandparents die seconds after getting out of the taxi.  It's almost like the game goes, "Oh, shit!  We forgot to kill off Grandma!"

It sure does. I had a death at the first birthday party I threw. He left his car parked on the street as I didn't have a driveway then. Now, 3 generations later, I still have that damn car parked on the street. Someday I'll get off my lazy ass and figure out how to get rid of the clunker.
110  Awesomeware / AwesomeMod! / Re: Awesomemode and Patch 1.3 how do I delete awesomemode? on: 2009 July 29, 08:03:45
Search is your friend. There is already a thread on this in this section.

BTW - no "e" on the end of AwesomeMod - although, by installing AwesomeMod, TS3 runs in AwesomeMode.
111  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / Facts & Strategery / Re: Traits Cheat Sheet - Work in Progress on: 2009 July 27, 08:31:51
It appears the ability to autonomously fight burglars (CanApprehendBurglar (Hidden)) can also be passed down to kids. I have several sims that don't have the brave trait, but yet they autonomously line up to fight a burglar. Their mother/grandmother was brave (and also in the Law Enforcement career).

The passing down of the hidden traits seems to go on for a (seemingly) unlimited number of generations. I'm now playing the sixth generation of a game where the founding sim was in the Criminal career, and nobody ever since. All the kids still get the "Sneak here" option.

I've got this with one family. The grandfather was an astronaut, and all his descendants have the"salute" option. I'm thinking of making up a challenge for myself where I'd have to get all the hidden traits into a single individual - obviously without using the addtrait command. So, I'd have to marry (or become) a burglar, cop, fireman, maid, astronaut, pizza deliverer, etc, etc. Anyone know of a command that shows hidden traits?
112  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: When is consanguinity dilute enough to make distant relations into romance on: 2009 July 25, 00:20:48
My family has finally expanded enough to see this. I have a set of first cousins once removed (his grandmother is her great-grandmother). They get the romance interactions and don't show a family relationship in the relationship panel.
113  Awesomeware / AwesomeMod! / Re: Problem with Awesome and Indie on: 2009 July 23, 13:03:21
The combination Awesome/Indie Mods are working fine for me. Just one problem is making itself everytime more annoying: all sims visiting downtown now seems to be very hungry or very sleepy. They keep on pointing their mouth with a hunger baloon or sleepy baloon. It seems that somewhere the mod combination is draining visitors motives.
I'm not playing any strategy in particular, just trying to influence the life of all inhabitants thru only one household. It has been very funny, but this motive drain is disturbing.

Buy one of your sims a moodlet manager and go around curing everyone you see. You'll have a town of wide-awake and happy sims to play with. Silly workaround, I know, but I've been having fun doing that for a day or two. It will get old, soon, I'm sure.
114  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: Useful glitches? on: 2009 July 23, 03:03:18
I tested this and the exact same thing ( the TV skill gain glitch) happens with gardening and fishing skills. I couldn't get it to do two skills at the same time though.

Tested this last night, had my "Renaissance Sim" gaining cooking and gardening while she was actually fishing. She got to level 10 in all 3 skills around the same time, cooking and gardening from the tv glitch, fishing by actually fishing. It seems like the tv glitch is slow, but I could watch both bars increase over the course of a day (or night while she slept). I haven't tried it for all 3 at the same time, will do with the new generation sometime this weekend. I'll report back.
115  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / Facts & Strategery / Re: Do not Work Out at the Gym, it gimps your Athletics Skill gaining. on: 2009 July 22, 10:55:13
ETA: I will be doing more tests to figure out if all skills are affected by mood and the library bonus.. The only problem I foresee is Painting since it cannot be skilled indefinitely, as you must stop and sell or otherwise get rid of the paintings when they are completed. I'm not entirely sure if this can be accomplished at the library.

The the "skill - paint" task from Supreme Commander on AwesomeMod. The painter will automagically take the painting and put it in inventory and start a new one. The only control is that you can't pick the size, but that wouldn't affect the rate of skill gain.

I seem to recall (at work and don't have all my files, sorry) that painting at the gallery sped up the skilling for painting. Maybe a 3-way test - home, library, gallery all identical traits and moods as close as you can get? I'd run this for a test but I won't have time until Friday. Stupid that I let work get in the way of my fun.
116  Awesomeware / AwesomeMod! / Re: Awesomod discussion/questions/helpful tips thread on: 2009 July 20, 16:54:44
Can one change the parameters mid game, or do i need to turn the sims off and clear the cache first? (those darn pixelations!)
I change the configuration mid-game all the time, especially on some stuff I leave off and then want on for a bit (overstuffed houses, debug commands mostly). I've never, not once, cleared the cache. Have fun!
117  Awesomeware / AwesomeMod! / Re: Awesomod discussion/questions/helpful tips thread on: 2009 July 19, 10:32:09
I'd moved out a couple from my main house, and the very next day, my playables get the want for a grandchild fulfilled. I check the family tree, and their daughter has spawned a son named Igor, but the baby has no relation to her husband. I thought Awesomemod would prevent this, or am I doing it wrong?

Did you move the pregnant woman, or her parents? That's not quite clear to me from your description.

This is so in my game as well -- when a pregnant sim moves house, the family ties to the father are cut. The only solution I know about is to not move. I haven't tested what happens when you'd only move the father. It is rather annoying that the game does nothing to prevent this, since to me it's not always immediately obvious whether or not a sim is pregnant =/

In my current game I have moved 3 pregnant sims, all show the proper ties to the father in the family tree. This is my legacy game, moving the extra daughters out after I knock them up. Fathers all live on other lots to begin with. I have a few move of these coming up in the next few days, I'll keep an eye out for lost family links.
118  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / Facts & Strategery / Re: Traits that matter on: 2009 July 17, 16:17:24
Natural cook is a tiny bit more subtle but they will never burn food and can save you a bit of money when keeping your sims happy with food related moodlets with the "kick it up a notch" interaction they get with meals.  It makes it very easy to get "perfect" meals out of less than perfect ingredients.

I don't think that is entirely right - I had a natural cook sim and early on, before he developed too much in the way of cooking skill, he cooked and burnt a meal.  I made the error of putting the leftovers in the fridge and the couple were 'bleughing' out over it for ages after he actually cooked the meal - every time they got a plate of it.  I think the last serving of it is still in there.  He's gone on to rataouille and more exotic stuff now.

I believe that the Natural Cook will not set fire to the kitchen, but can still burn meals when learning. That's what mine did. Once they get good, they get really good. I took Zazazu's advice and had my level 10 NC make a bunch of food and store it in that fancy fridge from the culinary career for his kids when he died. They ate for weeks without cooking.
119  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / Facts & Strategery / Re: How-to: Cleaning up the homeless scum in your town on: 2009 July 17, 03:57:31
I spent an hour importing houses (I suck at building so I used the EAxian ones that came w/ the game and some downloaded ones), used wandhere to depreciate them, familyfunded all the homeless so they could afford houses (some got 250k so someone should have moved into the now vacant Goth Manor). If I entered the runstoryaction nothing happened, I just got the error code. For a few nights in a row I got move in notices, but that's stopped and the game is still spawning homeless families. I have about 10 open homes ranging from $20k to $250k in value and the homeless have plenty of money to buy them. Arrgh.
120  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: I don't want your goddam crappy macaroni and cheese! on: 2009 July 13, 10:50:59
You can woohoo and make out at City Hall, the Mausoleum, the Theater or Science Center. You do get the option for "try for baby in test chamber" at the science center if the relationship level is high enough - barely friends seems to work all the time for me. My legacy founder had 7 kids in 6 pregnancies by 4 guys and never had a romantic interaction with any of them.
121  Awesomeware / AwesomeMod! / Re: Awesomod discussion/questions/helpful tips thread on: 2009 July 13, 04:15:58
Hmm, well the mom of this family I am playing is a high end painter and her large paintings regularly go for around 3.5k. Also have a master fisher in the house and a pond there stocked with deathfish. A stack of those can be worth quite a bit. No depreciation on either of those because it doesn't cost me anything in the first place, except time.

Of course this assumes I am playing them which I'm not so I guess it's pointless to give them anything but property and let the Artificial Stupidity figure them out from there.
That's what I did when I moved out a spawn and his new wife. I dumped a couple of paintings in his inventory, switched to his house long enough to sell the paintings so they had about 10k, put them on SupCom for whatever I wanted them to be doing for the next week or two (skilling logic), and left. Haven't gone back yet as I'm playing a different 'hood, but will do so next week sometime and see.
122  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: I don't want your goddam crappy macaroni and cheese! on: 2009 July 13, 04:06:28
My Sims are all Loners. It seems to make them pretty happy. I just love how adorable they look when they get nervous in crowds.

ASEXUAL SPAWNING. FRIENDS ARE FOR THE WEAK. YOU SHALL LIVE IN THE HIGHEST ROOM IN THE TALLEST TOWER.
Not quite asexual, but my current sim is making some random guy a friend (barely, as soon as it hits friend, stop talking), taking him to the science center and "try for baby in test chamber" with him. So much easier for a loner, commitment phobe to deal with. She's got like 4 total friends (all the fathers of her children) by the time she reached 90.
123  Awesomeware / AwesomeMod! / Re: Any information on core mod compatability? on: 2009 July 11, 03:41:52
I'm contemplating a foray into Story Action Generation sometime next-week. As for the Indie-Mod thing, they haven't gotten back to me. Apparently most people are not as workaholic as I am.
I haven't tried Indie Stone yet, I'm too hooked on my Supreme Commander to go elsewhere. I read their thread on MTS and I like some of how they work. If you could include something that combines Awesome's sacred families with features like "Encourage romance/marry/bear children/work/study/paint/write/fulfill ltw" with "reverse above for sacred" I would be over the moon.
124  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: No steak plants for me?! on: 2009 July 11, 01:57:56
My current family founder just got the Omni plant opportunity at age 89. Of course she's had the steak plants for about 30 days so I've had the 10 outstanding steaks in her inventory for about 25 days. She's ordering Omni seeds every day until she dies - this family will have a whole garden of Omni plants. She got to gardening level 10 as a young adult, so this took a long time. I had her refuse every skill-related opportunity unless she could fulfill it immediately with stuff in inventory. You'll get it eventually. Good luck!
125  TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: The Legacy Challenge for TS3 on: 2009 July 11, 01:53:19
No. Apparently, when I was messing around with the spreadsheet, I not only duplicated rows, but I failed at alphabetizing. That was during a bad insomnia streak. I'm really, truly, not usually that stupid.

Thanks, that's the best laugh I've had all week. I'll still rely on your posts for information - you have some very well-written and easy to understand posts about gameplay that have made my learning this much easier. I played Sims 1 without any expansion packs for about a month, never touched Sims 2. This is all new to me.
