Title: Fears and Wants that don't trigger
Post by: Gus Smedstad on 2008 April 08, 03:36:32
I thought there were only a couple of flakey Wants, such as Stay Home From Work, where the game wouldn't acknowledge that you'd fulfilled it.

Recently I noticed that toddlers don't care if they puke, even if they have the fear.  More significantly, the "Eat XXXX" Want doesn't work anymore.  "Learn to Cook XXX" does, but the simpler Eat want, which I know for a fact used to work, no longer does.

I'm currently running the patched version of Seasons.  Free Time is supposed to show up tomorrow.

Anyone else notice other wants or fears being borked?

WooHoo in the tent does not satisfy the woohoo want, IIRC.  I know it doesn't show up for the first WooHoo memory.  Of course, public WooHoos have always been rather particular, so this might have been predicted, and duly ignored.

I have no problem with "Eat/Learn to Cook XXX", they always trigger for me. But then, I have NL. I'm clearing out various audio/video project files to make room for the expansion packs. Since I have the same problem with toddler fears that you do, that means it can't be caused by post-NL b0rkage. I think toddler fears are just b0rken, period.

I'm not sure I've seen the generic "Eat" at all.

"Stay Home From Work" only triggers if you call in, as I recall. Missing the carpool won't fulfill it.

Can't think of any others that simply won't trigger, off-hand. Just the ones that are hard to trigger deliberately.

I have everything up through FT, and I'm rather annoyed right now. One of my sims rolled the want to go on vacation, his wife rolled the higher aspiration go on a specific (in this case mountain) vacation. I decided to gratify them, but when they got off the shuttle at their destination the wants were still unfulfilled, and since then they haven't been rolling up most of the normal vacation wants either.

Are they puking from eating pet food?  As far as I understand, that doesn't really count as puking, you just get the animation.

No, I fed them rotten bottles.  They promptly puked, but didn't get the fear.

I've noticed the pleasure sim/comm lot want to Soak In Hot Tub never fires, too.

Post by: Zazazu on 2008 April 08, 17:49:22
Hunh. It fires for me. Brionna was obsessed with hot tubs, and one didn't really fit into their home lot. She had one at Dance! (owned community lot). Getting in it triggered the want to fulfill, and it would pop up again soon.

Now, her brother Bastion was also a Pleasure sim and may never have had the want. I don't recall it. He was more of the "Go on Date" type of guy.

The 'Play Chess' want on a community lot does not trigger for me, but I'm sure that it used to. I'm wondering if this is because lower-skilled sims can only practise chess, not play it.

Update: I installed Free Time (with the crack, since I no wanty InsecureRom), and the "Eat XXXX" worked again.  Which may or may not be related, you know how it is.

Speaking of which, how the heck do you fulfill the "Win Gaming Contest" want?  My started it, another Sim joined in and lost, and then he just went on and on and on playing by himself.  I had to cancel it eventually because it was time for sleep.

I've always thought any of the "Win a Game Against XXX" wants weren't worth it, because they are almost always paired with the equivalent fear, and I haven't seen any kind of predictability. I *think* if the sim with the highest logic makes the last move in chess, that sim wins, but I haven't tested this.

The "Win Game" wants are basically worthless because it is impossible to influence who wins, it is entirely random whether there will even be a winner at all. Since the player cannot build any useful strategy around it, it is just slot trash.

I had the delusion that Logic skill influenced the outcome.  I was just hoping the "no winner" result was because I'd done something wrong, not because the code sucked.

Logic influences the outcome in the same way that the flapping of butterfly wings influences central Asian rainfall patterns and the price of milk in China.

Some wants instantly re-roll themselves without fuss, so you need to count aspiration points before and after to be sure they weren't filled.  It had one I was convinced was borked until I checked that.

If only I could actually get the gaming contests to that point it would be an improvement. I had a sim start one and when another sim tried to join she turned on the computer, waited, inserted the cd, waited, then just repeated the cycle over and over. Meanwhile my sim has already been playing SSX3 for about 2 sim hours.

I've only done one, but it seemed to work okay, in the "computer bar" comm lot that came with Nightlife. Of course the escaped prisoner who wasn't supposed to be there and who'd just sat down won it, but what can you do...

"Buy a karaoke machine" never triggers for me (I'm playing with just the EPs up to Pets), and I've had problems getting "Get fit" to trigger for a pregnant sim, though I haven't had a chance to try it with any sims that aren't pregnant.

I've never had "Get fit" trigger, even when locked. Sim does the "sproing, now I'm fit" animation, but no trigger. I stopped bothering to lock it after a while.

I wish this did work in my game. It's especially annoying at college during winter (I've got a bunch there right now) and all the family members are at school/work.

I could be imagining this, but I think it only works due to an Awesome mod. I don't recall which one...at all.

I don't know why, but I seem to remember when whatever mod this was first came into play, and I'm sure it was many expansion packs ago.

Actually, it may not even be an Awesome mod. Oh, I don't know. Too many years of simming fried me completely.

You need a community lot with just computers, and no other fun objects. You get loads of people joining then. I have one, I'll upload it later.

For some reason, I think they changed (and thus broke) that with pets.  Before pets, the want was "buy a stereo costing at least X" (which only the karaoke machine (and DJ booth?) could fulfill), when EAxis changed the name of the want, they probably also changed the "want category", but didn't change the karaoke machine itself.

I know that it does work for me, as my Uni students get this want and fulfill it constantly.  It might be due to a mod, but if so it must almost certainly be an awesome mod, as I have very few others, none of which should affect this, I think.  Stuff like the TwoJeffs college adjuster, Atavera's animated windows, Christianlov's clothing rack, etc.

I uploaded it here if anyone wants it. (http://laverwinklesims.com/index.php?topic=774) I had to make a new one as mine is full of CC. Easier just to rebuild from scratch using the Maxis crap.

There are a number of wants that don't fulfill in my game (NL, OFB, Pests, SSN), beginning with "Influence to Prank".  It doesn't work even on plantsims, who are the only ones in my game who have the interaction available.  "Talk to a Relative" (by phone) and "Get Fit" are trash, as are a lot of the LTWs that I encountered for the first time with Seasons - 20 Best Friends, Golden Anniversary, Max 7.

The "Buy a Stereo Costing $xx" didn't fill either with the DJ booth or by purchasing a karaoke machine.  It did, however, start getting filled when I finally installed GLS.  It seems that there a few stray wants that need tidying up.

Right before I installed FT I had a sim father with a want for his daughter to 'be an overachiever', teen in question was at the top of her carreer and had an A...came back from school the next day with an A+...want didn't trigger.  Haven't had a chance to try to reproduce the problem as I'm currently trying to track down a hack that I apparently forgot to update/remove...

To be an over-achiever they have to have the A+ before they hit the top of the teen career.  Has been that way since the base game.

hmmm...didn't know that.  Thanks.  That's usually the way it happens with me, this was the first time the other way around...the teen had an A+ but for some reason it went down to an A right before she got the promotion.

The DJ Booth and Karaoke Machine don't count as stereos, that's true. Was there a want for a stereo costing more than the most expensive stereo in the base game?

Title: Re: Fears and Wants that don't trigger
Post by: cwykes on 2008 April 16, 07:32:02
No. I played base game only for a long time.  I think that sort of problem crept in with the EPs.  If you didn't have an EP, you'd occasionally get wants that couldn't be fulfilled because the required item belonged to the EP you didn't have.  Slow dance was the one that drove me crazy when I didn't have NL. It rolled pretty much every time a sim went to a community lot.

No, it is the 'look through telescope' want that pleasure sims always seem to get. The stargazing want triggers just fine. I am wondering if it is because I have 'No Shoving from Look Through' installed. It always worked with that installed with the other EPs. The only other telescope-related hack I have installed recently is Inge's Community Telescope Fix. Doubt if it is that though. :-\

I haven't ever seen that want! I'm wondering if that has something to do with coding for the Glamour Life rugs-they are pretty expensive. You could always clone a rug you like with Object Workshop in SimPe, change the price to §4000 and import it to your game. Just make sure you put it in the rug category.

Just make sure you put it in the rug category.

Actually, it doesn't matter what category it's in.  There's a line in object data called "want category" and that's the one that identifies an object as a rug.  I've cloned a lot of paintings, and just changed the want category, for easy fulfilling.

I fulfilled the "Win Gaming Contest" want in home lot, but you have to make two playables compete each other. Visitors never join the contest. Waste of time in home lot, as only one playable can fulfill the want. Better to fulfill this want at an internet cafe community lot like Emma's.

I don't recall it always being the same sim who catches the other sim spying and runs over to start shoving... but maybe I just didn't have a whole lot of shoving going on. First sim to get pissed at a peeping tom was Gary Puckett; he may have been pissed off twice.

Latest sim to get pissed off happened to be the current Captain Hero, so I'm building it into a story about her threatening someone for discovering her secret identity.

No, it shouldn't work, because it's not a game.

It's the same reason that buying the most expensive tv (8K simoleons) doesn't satisfy the "buy a computer" want, even though they're found in the same category.  Some categories have different types of objects within them, and you have to make sure you are buying the right type of object.

Fair point.  I withdraw.  So that want to buy a game costing 3k can't be met except by buying something that also fills the 5k want.  Your sims get two wants satisfied by buying that bowling alley or golden flamingo.
