1976  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: HUZZAH! Banned from Rentech.com! on: 2005 August 01, 16:23:27
Cartoon violence is ok (Tom & Jerry anyone?) but bringing reality into something that's essentially marketed for kids?

Even as a kid I knew that hitting someone over the head with a frying pan would do more than produce the doingoingoing! sound.  Wink

As for the "disturbing" avatar...I've seen far worse than a gay couple snogging. (Having been round the blocks more than once - a fairly slow stroll - and (jokingly) known as a "fag-hag".) Sexuality merely is. And, provided everyone is enjoying it and there is no coercion then I fail to see what the problem is. Both of my children have gay men as role models and it hasn't done them any harm, and it has done no harm to those young people adopted by gay couples of either gender.

I'm far from being a "tree-hugging hippy", but I am also (jokingly) a "fag hag". Two good friends of mine are a gay couple, and they have adopted a son (he was 11 at the time of adoption, and is now in high-school), whom they "suspect" is also gay (and also why their home was seen as a perfect fit for the child). My son is friends with their son and didn't blink an eye when we went over to their house for dinner one evening and the son was dressed in a long velvet gown and full makeup! And my son adores the two men. Although at first I didn't know how to answer my son's "Why does so-and-so have two daddies?" question, I answered with the truth, which my son accepted and went back to his crayons. That's reality, and I've come to the conclusion that shielding my son from what some deem "socially unacceptable" would be the best recipe for creating a mind which considers such things "socially unacceptable". There are things that deserve that label, but this was not one of them, in my mind.

Wow, five red squares??? Someone got a little trigger-happy with the anti-rep button, it seems. This is getting sillier by the day...

Thanks so much for this. Pleasantville is now a large volcanic island!
It was kind of funny seeing many of my lots floating out in the ocean at first.
I wish you took a screenshot of this!

I do, too, now that I think about it...I mean, the Goths were out to sea!
1978  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: More Memory Spam on: 2005 July 30, 03:11:12
My question is this: has a hack been made ... to address the "so and so made the dean's list" spam? I also see a lot of "so and so got a D!" memories.
Pescado has one on this site.  Not sure why he didn't mention it, but that's what a secretary is for:  http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/ffs/hacks/ - it's about halfway down, "nodeanspam". Works the same was as the A+ one, you just get a memory for the first one and that's it.

Yeah, I noticed the nodeanspam as I was going through my hack folder earlier today. All those "x made the deans list" memories were from long ago, before I installed the hack. Sorry for the oversight.
I've gotten one or two "x was an overachiever" memories for my sims, but I've never been spammed by that one.
Another one I could do with out is the "x grew up well" multiple memories.

I got the PM from that little idiot as well. Has he pm'd every member here? I wasn't on line when I received this little gem. Bet he loves the attention, though, as I'm sure that was his motivation.

And have those same people ask for the mods to get the parrots to shut up. I wonder if sim-parrots would speak in simlish. I wonder if real parrots could speak in simlish. Okay, I'm out to lunch, mentally.
1981  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: More Memory Spam on: 2005 July 29, 17:01:01
Okay, good to know. Of course that means a gazillion more files to delete, but what the hell.
No, no. No deleting tokens for me. That's the reason I'm redoing this whole thing.
1982  TS2: Burnination / The War Room / Re: TUTORIAL: Neighborhood Terrain Surgery on: 2005 July 29, 16:11:52
There's an idea for an expansion: The Sims At Sea: Pirates! meets TS2.

There you go! The next logical ep after Nightlife. Can you imagine the possible bugs with that? Or "too many iterations" errors caused by parrots.

Komei is one of the few Townies I didn't kill. He is a "family friend". Never thought about pairing him with Jan Tellerman...wow.
1984  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / More Memory Spam on: 2005 July 29, 16:01:14
I spent several hours last night and am still working on editing the memories of every single sim in Pleasantville and I had to stop about halfway through because my clicker finger was beginning to spaz on me. I did not realize and was quite annoyed that several of the npcs, especially David and Celeste (the carpool and bus drivers) were full of ancient "so-and-so got an A+" memories about my sims from before I got the "no A+ spam" mod. Cleaning npc memories was grueling by itself, but I am dreading going back into simpe and individually clicking more multiple memories from long ago. My question is this: has a hack been made (I looked but couldn't find any, but my eyes are crossed from deleting deleting deleting) to address the "so and so made the dean's list" spam? I also see a lot of "so and so got a D!" memories. I can see having those memories once, but not each time it happened. I also noticed that roaches cause several "vermin!" memories.

One more question: I've seen this asked, but I haven't seen a definitive answer. Is it safe to delete the "invisible" memories? I know they serve as fodder for gossip, and, I'm assuming, congratulations, but it seems ridiculous that my sims all have billions of memories of "made best friends with..." owned by other sims. Especially since I have twojeff's "no teasing and congratulations" fix, if I am correct in assuming that is what they're for.

1985  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Am I a bad person? on: 2005 July 29, 15:32:27
In an hour he'd finished 2 years worth of Uni, and gotten engaged to Brandi LeTourneau.  Is that bad?  Should I be slapped down and have lips ripped off?

Ugh. That slut! Just so you know, she's having an affair with my sim...

As for Marsha Bruenig- in my game, she's dead. Both of them. I killed the second one because the name alone triggers my gag reflex. The original Marsha, along with Jan Tellerman, Chandler Platz, and anyone named Orlando (who was constantly coming home from school with my sims for 4 generations!) were probably the four most annoying characters in my game.

I've been using DatGen. It's got a pretty decent file scanner.
I got datgen downloaded and installed. It scans. I love seeing all the categories and the details, like the objects with googleplex polygons that can slow down the game etc. Very informative, this looks like the best option so far. I couldn't make datgen delete files or remove them though, right click or anything else. I don't want to search 1Gb data by hand but may have to. I'm still on the track of starting a new n'hood but want to prune my downloads first.

I tried the Maxis scanner, it got a lot of stuff wrong, not nearly so much detail as datgen, clunky cartoon interface, very windows XP, very yesterday. Wink

Do you have the latest release of datgen? It gives you the options of either putting questionable files in a temporary folder so you can go through them yourself, or it can delete them right away.  It's called the Datgen File Maid.
1988  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Review of the Sims2 Content Manager on: 2005 July 28, 20:28:25
It's now on TSR, but it's a free download. You can also check out the creator's site: http://www.datgen.info/
1989  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Review of the Sims2 Content Manager on: 2005 July 28, 18:58:24
I do have quite a few skins that I do use.  In fact, I rarely use Maxian skins but almost always use the custom skins.  Perhaps I should just backup the files, go in and disable them all and see what's missing?

Chris

I've been using DatGen. It's got a pretty decent file scanner. All my "gibberish" files were just that. Gibberish. They were all empty files, so I deleted them and haven't had any problems.
1990  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Too many files/sims explanation for dummies needed on: 2005 July 28, 18:36:33
It's with Sim State. I deleted a "few" NPC's and professors, but in my backup those files are still intact. I didn't realize when I deleted those files that there were supposed to be three of every npc. I deleted professors that my sims had not met. However, if I go back to my backup (my alternative is to keep working on the brand new hood, not to continue playing with the hood that I screwed to hell), I won't touch the npcs or professors, which will obviously make my character file count higher. I can live with that, though, because I still have plenty of useless townies to get rid of, again.

Thanks for the quick reply!
1991  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Starting "anew" on: 2005 July 28, 18:26:35
I have the Goth ancestors cloned, now, I just can't remember which is which! But I guess it doesn't really matter, from what J.M. said. And it's a relief that I don't have to worry about genetics, there. I may just clone the adult Dustin, name him Skip, and kill him. They look pretty much identical from what I can tell.
Okay, genetics question, now: I have sims that are the sons of Brandi Broke and one of my own sims. I also have a teenage boy and two female children from that same sim and Bella Goth (check out my avatar! That's Joe-the sim I'm referring to- with Justin Goth-Bayfield as a toddler! Joe's a romance sim and has been around the Pleasantville block Wink) . Anyway, with them now cloned and in the new neighborhood, will the cloned Justin's offspring carry genetics from the cloned Bella and Joe? Or, rather, will they look the same way they would as the original Justin's offspring in Pleasantville would? That may be a ridiculous question, but I'm curious as to how the genetics of a clone work.

edit to ask:
Can you tell us how to change the neighborhood terrain without losing any characters, etc? Puh-leeze?

edit to withdraw question. Just noticed the tutorial thread...
1992  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Too many files/sims explanation for dummies needed on: 2005 July 28, 18:11:37
Veilchen, thanks for putting all these questions together for us! I'm glad I'm not the only one confused. As I mentioned in another thread, I am in the process of cloning and reproducing all characters. I have the physical characters in the game and have been working for hours creating family ties in my main family alone. And since my family has offspring related to the Goths and Brokes, I had to clone those characters and recreated them in the game, as well. Which led me to the realization that I would pretty much ave to recreate all the original Pleasantville families because of their ties with each other (Cassandra and Don Lothario, Dina and Mortimer, etc.). I'm trying to be as faithful to the original story lines as I can. Maybe it's my perfectionism that's forcing me to do it, but I feel I must recreate every ancestor to these families, for their historical value. I am seeing now that the neighborhood will not be usable for quite some time, because, well, talk about tedious!

My point is, I am doing all this because I have only played Pleasantville, and I've been playing it since I got the game which would be since not long after the game came out.
I had pared my neighborhood down from close to 500 character files down to about 350. Then I removed a few cellphone tokens, found out that was the wrong thing to do, went out and got some Rogaine for my game-induced hair loss, and decided that, instead of reverting to my backup I would start clean. Which would probably still be the safest solution. But since I now have a better understanding about the "critical mass" problem, thanks to everyone here, and actually want to play this game, I may go back to my backup and remove the extra files again (and leave all cellphone tokens!) and play the game.

Here's a hypothetical question for you, J.M. What exactly does happen if a character is deleted, and one or two memories are inadvertently left in the game (say they were missed during the memory-wipe comb-through). Obviously whatever sim carried that memory will have "subject" in place of the deleted sim's name, but how does this impact the health of the game. If I play the game, notice that a sim does have "subject" memories, will all be "okay" if I just go back through and delete the passed-over memories in Simpe? Or does it cause problems much deeper than that? I'm still a little confused about the deleting of character files. I know my way around simpe at a beginner/low-intermediate level, but am not a modder or a simpe expert by any means. I can follow directions, though, if someone would be able to explain what needs to be done to fix it. I'm asking because I have had a few townies that have appeared on my lots, and I killed them. I deleted all the memories of any sim that had contact with him, but I missed one or two. I then deleted those memories in simpe. I'm not talking about main characters or townies that had relationships with any of my sims; the memories I missed were from sims that were present on the lot when the deaths occured, and their only memory of the deceased sim is that he "died".

I apologize if that was confusing.
1993  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Starting "anew" on: 2005 July 27, 20:52:16
I could resurrect a couple of them; I think Skip Broke is resurrectable. But most of the older ancestors have no character data and can't, to my limited knowledge, be resurrected or exported from SimPe into bodyshop. Or maybe they can. After I typed that last sentence I looked in Sim Surgery and saw Agnes Crumplebottom. Gonna go check that out.
I guess I'll have to create the Goth ancestors and immediately kill them to have their ghosts at the Goth home. Sounds like fun. I had to do that in my new neighborhood with the supposed-to-be-deceased parents of one of my male characters. It was funny and sad at the same time. I used the tombstone of life and death. My female sim was having a pillow fight with her husband's mother, then a satellite dropped on the old lady. The husband and son of the dearly departed ran over sobbing. Then dad was electrocuted out of "nowhere" leaving his son and daughter-in-law traumatized for life.

edited to add:
Okay, I exported the Goths and Crumplebottoms, but I guess I'm on my own with the Newbies...
1994  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Starting "anew" on: 2005 July 27, 20:18:38
I don't use the cell phones at all. I don't trust them, since most of my "too many iterations" errors had something to do with the cell phones.
Does anyone know of any place I can get the characters (clean, physical, bodyshop characters-no ties!) of the Pleasantville ancestors of the Broke family, Goth family, etc.? I'm trying to recreate all that history again and I'm not sure of the best way to do it. If not, I guess I'll have to use my own talents in Bodyshop, but I don't wanna.  So far I have all my characters cloned, and I cloned the living Pleasantville characters. I'm just getting into creating family ties and I haven't even touched the memories yet.
1995  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Starting "anew" on: 2005 July 27, 06:18:48
I am waiting eagerly to find out how to do this. Right now I'm in the process of cloning characters and making the family trees for my new 'hood in preparation for Nightlife. Not fun. But I do want to change my current Pleasantville to a different terrain. I need a change.
1996  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Starting "anew" on: 2005 July 26, 20:48:02
Yes, you answered that question at vs when I was trying to change Screechy Old Lady's voice. Since I'm cloning a large amount of sims, I just wanted to know if I should expect to do this since I heard somebody say the voice does stay the same, most people say it doesn't, yadda yadda yadda. Then I looked in SimPe at the files and got even more confused. I tend to make simple things difficult. Thanks for the info. and the advice. I may try the delete all characters thing. I still want to change the terrain to a custom one, however.
1997  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Don't Rip My Lips Off But... (A Suggestion/Question/Pleading?) on: 2005 July 26, 17:33:13
You probably already considered this and rejected it, as evidenced by the mere lack of it, but would you [re-]consider having a separate forums for General Discussion and Hack Requests? As it stands now, the Podium seemed to always serve as both, but I can see it building up to the point where it may get overwhelming (at least for me).

Anyways, I think it'd be nice to have separate forums for each, so for those who are more social, they can browse through all the more chatty like threads. While those who are more interested in possible/suggested hack/hack development can peruse those separately.

What do you think? *presses his lips firmly together, folding them inwards in an attempt to hide them from possible ripping-offs*

Ste

Syberspunk, as evidenced by your avatar,  you really need to keep your lips! Tread carefully!

Thank you KellyQ!  Actually, I guess Montana is probably a good place for windmills!

AHEM.
2000  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Starting "anew" on: 2005 July 26, 16:16:35
Pardon my posting twice in a row, but I have another "shot in the dark" question. If, before I even play the game or add my own characters, I install a brand-spanking new Pleasantville, can I change the actual neighborhood but keep the characters? Say I move all families and houses to their respective bins. Can I then swap out the traditional Pleasantville neighborhood for a custom one and then put everything in place there?

That sounds like a question that I had, I just never had the nerve to ask, because....well, just because.
G.

I know why you didn't have the nerve to ask. It's the same reason I haven't asked the question until now. It's a possible lip-ripper. Oh, well, lips to the wind!
