Title: I Can Has Ceiling Tiles?
Post by: cwieberdink on 2008 October 15, 12:01:11
I no can has.  Dumb cwieberdinkly people have been unable to figure out exactly how to get the ceilings to place.

Can someone totally awesome show me a screenshot of the camera angle necessary to get the ceiling placed?  Does a grid show up?  Is there a way to ceiling an entire room at once?  (I"ve read there is, but I haven't been able to get the camera to look at the ceiling to try and place it.)

This drove me nuts for ages.

There's a toggle ceilings on/off tool on the roundy thing to the left. Click it & the ceilings show up.

Ceilings automagically turn up if you use floors above the room you want to view.

Anything more techy than that & you'll have to ask someone else.

There's also a button on the roundly thing for a new camera angle that allows you to see your ceilings.  It's fun to go from top down view to that.  :)

Is there any way to see them in Live mode, though? I don't see much point to having ceilings otherwise.

Yes, but they're just a bit shy sometimes. Go up and down floors a couple of times, toggling ceilings on and off as you go.  Eventually there will be a eureka! moment when you're on the floor you want to be on, and the ceiling is showing too! :)

Hmmm. I will have to try this and see if it works in some of the premade Maxis-family houses... I've noticed that since installing AL, I can't get some of the Pleasantview houses to show ceilings.

The ceilings are a part of the floor tiles.  If there are no floor tiles above the room you're wanting a ceiling in, you can't haz ceiling tiles.   :-\    Just in case you overlooked that.   ;)

Try this:
Pause the game.
Turn on the toggle ceiling button.
Set it to "walls up."  (actually, I just tested it.  In my game it works with any walls configuration, but looks weird at "walls down"
Zoom in to very close zoom.  I use the scroll button for this.
Press and hold the mouse scroll button.
Moving the mouse forward, as in away from you, while holding the scroll button should give you a close up of the floor.
Move the mouse backward, towards you, while holding the scroll button to see the ceiling.

It's amazing how players made ceilings never had this kind of issues, so far...

Go, EA, GO!

P.S.: I wonder if ceilings are sold back like waves do, when the family moves out.

yes, you can. Just go up to the roof level and put floor tiles in 'under the roof'

I think the OP was also asking about the placing of ceiling tiles.

If you hit the 45' angle button (beside the top down view button), move the mouse forward to get into the house or room, then click and drag to change the angle, you can then place any floor from build mode on the ceiling.

My sim wandering around the lobby of his tastefully decorated apartment.

You can use anything, but some of the carpets look a little strange with all the shagginess.

Holding shift and clicking fills an enclosed space much like placing floors.  Just move your mouse to the ceiling until the floor appears on the ceiling and hit shift-click.

Done.

If you have a camera mod that allows it, you don't need the 45' angle button, just pull the camera down.  I've been going round Little Carping inserting attics everywhere.  The white texture that comes as default is fine for the most part but you can use any floor.  That's a nice use for those Maxis floors Vecats.  Very tasteful.  I used to use the ceiling mod from MTS2 before this EP - I do like the atmosphere a ceiling adds to a picture.  However, they seem to have done something with the lighting as the new ceilings look a lot better than the old ceiling mod.

I would imagine that they made it so the light actually hits the ceilings, whereas the old ones were probably noclip to lighting.

The bottomful floors were the worst for lighting.  They used to light up according to what the floor above was doing!   So if you had someone asleep in the downstairs bedroom, and the light went on in the room above, suddenly the downstairs bedroom got a floodlit ceiling :)

Thanks so much for all the tips!  I will try them.  I was messing with camera angles and just couldn't get it right, but I didn't realize there was a ceiling toggle.   :P
