Title: Bye Bye downloads. Hello Organization
Post by: lindaetterlee on 2006 June 14, 15:47:49
Ok So again i killed all downloads and i am working on downloading and organizing. My one question is hacks/mods. Is it proper to put them in sub folders or should they all be in the main downloads folder. Any thoughts or information. I know some hacks have to "load" before others to work properly. Not sure though if they can still do this in subfolders.

Linda

I have all my hacks (apparently a very pathetic amount of hacks by the way) in a subfolder and they work there.

My set up for hacks

Downloads<Hacks<JmPescado<Twojefffs<Crammyboy<SyberSpunkWoohoo<MTS2

No problems at all for them.

Side note, the InSIMenator HAS to be in the plain downloads folder. It didn't like being in the hacks folder.

InSim does not have to be in the main Downloads folder.  I have it in a subfolder and it works fine (although I've only ever used one function  :P )

I have all my hacks by creator (actually, only two creators get their own folder; Pescado and Twojeffs), and then I have all other mods in a Miscellaneous folder.  I think I have one mod by jenflower in the Twojeffs folder, since there's a loading issue with them, but other than that, everything works fine.

Hm, on second thought, you're right BlueSoup. I was just stupid and couldn't find the machine.

Oh yeah, and skintones can go into their own folder. Makes adding genetic codes to them MUCH easier.

One tip:

Keep Pictures with your downloads. Like so:

or like so:

subfolders are your friend:

I thought that clothes and make up don't work if you have them in folders. At least that is what Sims2CleanInstaller says...

That changed if you got NL, I think it was...which expansion was it, anyone? anyone? Bueller?

Well, I know what I'll be doing this weekend when the hubby is outta town.

That might explain why my skintones were okay with being in a subfolder even though the CleanInstaller FAQ said they wouldn't be.

NL made it so everything can go in a subfolder.  I even have CEP in a subfolder.  :D

Jade, your organization scares the bejesus out of me lol

I always thought about organizing my downloads, but then get to lazy and go to play the game instead  ;D

I have all my hacks in a sub folder called..well Hacks =P

Hmm, I'm not looking forward to getting all my objects into their own folders.

Do the meshes for hair have to be in the folder as the textures for them?

No, meshes and textures (for anything, not just hair) can be in different folders.

Sweet. That will keep me from having to figure out the meshes from object, hair, or clothes.

It is actually an advantage to have all your meshes in one place as it stops you from downloading duplicate meshes.

Post by: Jelenedra on 2006 June 14, 21:09:40
Very good point. Right now, pretty much all of my meshes are in the same place. (The barebones downloads folder)

It was only the skintones and the hacks that got the special treatment.

I've got very few downloads, so I just sort by creator.  There's 1 or 2 things not subfoldered just because they don't really belong in any categories.

What they say on the InSim site only applies if you don't have Nightlife or above.  You can subcategorize anything if you have Nightlife, but I'm not sure you can if you just have OFB or SP1.  InTeen supposedly fixes it's problems by being in the main folder, probably just due to the fact that things in the main folder are read by the program first, so in reality you're just shielding the true problem.  Probably similar to some of Squinge's stuff too.

I agree about having all meshes in one folder - except I do separate Hair meshes from Meshes (clothes, accessories, etc.)  I keep the hair meshes in a subfolder of the Hair Files, and then each colour has its own colour as well.

I tried Jade's system, but it didn't work for me.  I'm happy enough with my system as it is.

Jade, what do you do if you download something that is for two categories (A dress for adult females that shows up under everyday and formal.)?

The only hacks I know for sure need to go in the Downloads folder itself are the Kitten Killer and its spawn...

Title: Re: Bye Bye downloads. Hello Organization

Some hackers say that there hacks must go in the original folder. That what the kitten killer says but it works fine in sub folders... hypathetically... yeah...

@ Pegasys LOL! Sorry!

Jade, what do you do if you download something that is for two categories (A dress for adult females that shows up under everyday and formal.)?

I put it where I would look for it. If it is more formal, then I would put it there.

Not many people could do my system, but it works for me. *Le shrug*

I have insem in a subfolder. The only thing I don't have in a subfolder is CEP.

Exactly, Jade. I have a similar organisation technique that others would have trouble deciding on (and I change catalog info on all the stuff I download. For example, now all my plants and vases show up in the plant section That's why I'll never upload a house. Ever.) I'd show my organising technique if I knew how to put up a picture here. I've completely lost my forum abilities (I've been translating  50 pages of a thesis. I am a MSWORD whore. It makes me stupid. :D)

Title: Re: Bye Bye downloads. Hello Organization
Post by: SaraMK on 2006 June 15, 08:39:07
I edit 99% of the stuff I download. I bin hair, I get rid of eyelash bars and pointy ears on good-looking sims, I change categories for clothing, I change prices on objects, I change where in the catalog stuff will appear, I make collections....

I find that being organized and having to edit files makes me very careful about what I put in the game, and that's exactly why I do it.

Ditto. I also put hair in the same family (even "binners" tend to forget this step), and enable objects for OFB buy mode. And ever since Pescado posted his footstep tutorial I've been fixing my downloaded clothes.

Some hackers say that there hacks must go in the original folder. That what the kitten killer says but it works fine in sub folders... hypathetically... yeah...
The problem with this is that there are several "InTeenimater-compatible" mods that work by ensuring they are loaded AFTER the InTeenimater.  If the InTeenimater is in a subfolder, then it gets loaded late, and may potentially "blot" out the effects of said mods (rendering them useless).  Granted, if you know what the hell you are doing and have some clue about how package load ordering works, you can - as you have observed - put InTeen safely in a subfolder.  Problem is, most users are far too brain dead to even grasp at the concept of package loading, so I avoid it altogether and promote the "you can't go wrong" approach.  As soon as you say "put the files wherever the hell you want" you start dealing with people who do screwy shit like putting part of the InTeen package files in one folder, and part in another.  Some people organize their mods by author, which will screw you up.  It's just too complicated to try and anticipate all the zany combinations people will try (and worse to support it) - and when it breaks - they won't even stop to consider the possibility they screwed it up.  They'll just cuss at the mods that don't work, delete files randomly until it does work, and then rant on here about how their game is so much better without the mods they deleted :)

I do my hacks by author, but that's just because when an update is made for them I can find them easily. And it makes it a little less daunting to find the "screwing my game up hacks" because I can just skip all the ones in JM's, Twojeffs', and Crammyboy's folders)

I don't use kitten killer. (that's inTEENimenator, right?) So I don't have to worry about stuff loading before or after it. =p

Looks like I know what I will be doing today!

JadeElliott, do you know where I might be able to get those beaded blinds, I located the Sims2Play website but they were not listed there.  They have some nice stuff there.

Maybe your virus protection or firewall is stopping it. It sounds like some program on your computer that is doing it if you are using IE. I just went there and all is fine and I just did all my windows updates yesterday.

No, that's site advisor  http://www.siteadvisor.com/   it's a browser plugin that will show safe sites in green when you do a google search. They actually register on sites to verify if the site sends spam or they will download files to see if they contain spyware or viruses.  This site has a green ranking so they have tested it already. :)

Thanks for the link. But I was right. It is still a program downloaded onto your computer (in this case incorporated into Firefox) that causes the blocking.

I'm looking into the program. This could be just the thing for some of my customers that keep bringing their computer to me to be "fixed" when the entire problem they have is from spyware and/or viruses.

Yeah, you can bypass the blocking if you are brave. My daughter had a ton of spyware on her computer from surfing sims sites though, so I make her use it now.
