Nah, the Legacy challenge isn't quite that strict.  I even got the OK from Pinstar to use Macrotastics!  Anyway, I sent her off to a community lot (a butt-ugly one) and she met and started chatting up a cutie, so that's who I am going to shanghai to take back home with her.

Wow he's cute. Definitely a keeper. But do my eyes deceive me or is he the spitting image of Mitch Indie?  Undecided I think Mitch is a playable sim that lives with roomie Max Flexor at Academie LeTour in one of the student houses. Or I've got their names reversed, I can never remember which one is which. It's been a while since I played my neighborhood with that college.

MistyBlue, that's a great design. Where did you get all the plants?

What a beautiful little house. I want to know where you found the lovely flowers too. So pretty.
104  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / House Layout? on: 2006 May 24, 22:35:59
Sorry to ruin your new building concept (basements and front terraces), but sims hate to use stairs. They will use them when they have no choice.
Another thing they hate is - walking on the bare ground; if there is a tiled pathway to the front of the house, and bare ground in the front of the house - they will go first on the tiled pathway.

I build all my houses on 5x5 lots, with at least 6-7 doors to the yard. But I put floor tiles all over the unused yard (bushes, trees, and flowers).
No basements, and no porches - straight on the ground, leaving 7 tiles at least between the road and the front wall of the house.

My sims never go to greet a visitor around the yard, always through the front doors, pointing to the road. Even if they are at the back of the house, they choose to pass inside the house to the front door.

Besides, I put tons of objects in front of the house and around - my sims move freely beside them.

Gali, I'm sorry, but that is totally ludicrous. Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley

You must play with aging off Gali. Otherwise I'm certain that sims born on one side of the lot would die of old age once they get to the other side.  Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink
105  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: No gravestones in buy/build mode on: 2006 May 17, 22:52:06
Same here. I've got all the critical fixes like the romance tombstone fix and the no unlink on delete. I thought the problems I previously had were resolved with the Nightlife patch but it happened again a few days ago with Darren Dreamer's tombstone. Prior to dying of old age he had been living with his second wife Jane (formerly Jane Stacks of Sim State) and their daughter Nora in Downtown, I sent his tombstone to my Pleasantview Memorial Lawn to be next to his wife Darleen. Darren's tombstone was invisible in build/buy mode, visible when I sent a sim to the community lot. In hindsight I wonder if sending a tombstone across sub-neighborhoods FUBARed my cemetery.

But did I learn? No I had daughter Nora send both Darren's tombstone AND Darleen's back home and then to Gothier Green Lawns. I was determined to have them buried together. Same problem. I sent the tombstones back to the Dreamer townhome, quickly made a downtown mausoleum and sent them there. Worked with no problem.

I am quite unawesome so I really don't know why the problem still occurs. I don't know if it was the moving across sub-neighborhood thing or if there's a "limit" to the number of tombstones at a community cemetery before problems like this occur. The day before Darren died Castor Nova's cowplant ate both Komei Tellerman and Sandy Bruty and their tombstones sent straight to Pleasantview Memorial Lawn with no problem. I'm not sure yet if Pleasantview Memorial Lawn and Gothier Green Lawns will work for any of my future dead. I haven't had the time to play this week but am tempted to kill off another townie just to see.

Edit- I just killed Brandi LeTourneau and was successfully able to move her to my Pleasantview Memorial Lawn. Her tombstone was visible when I went to the lot in build/buy mode.  Undecided So I'm at a loss as to why there were problems with Darren & Darleen Dreamer's tombstones and why my Pleasantview cemetery is now working. I haven't tried Gothier Green Lawns yet.

The phrase you're looking for to aptly describe Miranda & her mom's lips is "catbutt face."  Lips sealed I saw the phrase once describing an annoying mother inlaw and thought it was quite appropriate.

114  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Squinge found something interesting... on: 2006 April 05, 21:20:35
Does it gross you out? Make you uncomfortable? Do you find it rude? Do you think the person is inconsiderate to not show any manners or respect for other human beings? Would you be bothered enough to not want to sit next to them or have them near your food?

Yes.

You know, maybe it isn't fair to say this, but I think that only women who've had a child and been through the breastmilk vs. formula decision have any right to even HAVE an opinion on this topic.

Ouch! My girlfriend and I don't have children yet because I have PCOS, I'll be the birth mother and she's not ready to breed yet - but that doesn't stop me from being pro-boob and protesting against formula. I think anyone who is educated about the facts should have an opinion and be determined to breastfeed before the child comes into the world.

The unfair reality is that if you haven't had a child you have no idea what it's like to be a breastfeeding mom. Just like those who haven't experienced the heartbreak of infertility do not fully comprehend your pain. Wouldn't you be offended if someone judged the decisions you make with your infertility situation? My heart goes out to you guys, I had secondary infertility (I have ovulatory problems that the doctors never found a cause for) and had to take fertility drugs to get pregnant with my second daughter. I had rude, insentitive people tell me, "You already have one child, shouldn't you just be happy with her?" or "Why don't you just adopt?" That hurt, I felt like people who didn't understand my situation were passing judgement on me. They didn't know what it's like to be on that awful emotional roller coaster and I just wanted them to shut their mouths. It became even more uncomfortable when my problem temporarily corrected itself and I surprisingly became pregnant with my third daughter. Then I was on the receiving end of remarks like, "See I told you all you needed to do was just relax." Roll Eyes

So I hope you understand I'm not trying to take a pot shot at your painful situation but hoping that you will try to understand how we feel. Being a nursing mom isn't a cakewalk in this country. You haven't yet been in this situation yourself so you don't know what it's like. To be "banished" to another room to feed your child. To try to cover yourself with a blanket when you feed your child in public. To be treated like some second class circus freak for wanting to care for your child as you see best. And believe me, like Faemidwife said people seem to notice when you use the blanket. I'm glad that I had these cool nursing tops, it was rare that anyone noticed my baby was eating. I didn't "flash" or act like some self-centered exhibitionist (I practiced in the mirror too), I just wanted to feed my child in a normal fashion while being able to care for my other kids. I didn't want to have to schedule my daily responsibilities around having to hide in another room while my youngest received nourishment.

It's interesting how it all seems to be a matter of "mental conditioning." My children and many of their agemates couldn't care less. Makes me really wonder about the mindset of some adults when their response is, "Eww, can't she go in another room or something?" when the children who see the same nursing mom don't notice her or even care. I'm not talking just preschoolers and such, I've seen preteens and teens with a, "Who cares, she's feeding her baby" attitude. Maybe hopefully in 10-20 years this will no longer be an issue in this bassakwards country and nursing moms will finally stop being harrassed. But there will probably be no agreement today or in the near future.

116  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Squinge found something interesting... on: 2006 April 05, 03:34:20
I don't see a problem as long as a blanket or such is used or the mother does it in a private place. My mother always went to the car or draped a blanket over my sister to be polite when in public. She really didn't want to just whip a tit out and force others to watch, that's incredibly rude. It's like taking a piss in public, masturbating in public or having sex in public. Sure, they're all natural and normal but not everyone wants to see it while they're eating or on an outing. Same with changing a diaper. That's why we need nice places for mothers to go to tend to these things if they absolutely have to be in public with baby at feeding time, like a lounge.

That said, I never understood why Maxis didn't have breastfeeding in game. It's a mother/child bonding thing but I suppose the media would turn it into OMG PORN! even though adult female sims don't even have nipples.

Exsqueeze me?  If it is like taking a piss, masturbating or having sex then it is like porn.  Except it's not any of those things.  Not at all.  Breastfeeding is NOT sexual and it is NOT the elimination of body wastes that are a health hazard.  This is an ignorant and incorrect view.  It is nice to be discreet, but it is certainly NOT rude to nurse your baby without covering yourself head to toe.  In the victorian era when women couldn't even show an ankle, they would open their dress and breastfeed in CHURCH sometimes covering their exposed entire breast with a hankie if they had one available.

117  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Squinge found something interesting... on: 2006 April 05, 02:31:37
A couple years back, I was at a baseball game and saw some woman breastfeedin' her baby while trying to conceal it subtly with her jacket. That was really disturbing to see, especially given the amount of people there.  Shocked

It's definitely disturbing to think a parent has to hide to feed her child, isn't it? Smiley

I think it's disturbing to criminalize women feeding their babies the optimum food for humans and encouraging feeding a vastly inferior substance to avoid offending.  And that's all I'm saying.

C

I will never understand why people act like that either. A mother should be able to care for her child in the manner she believes to be best. When I see people make some big disgusting deal out of it I have to wonder what's wrong with them. Baby's eating, so what? Why do you (the person with the problem) have to turn it into something dirty? And I'm not against bottle feeding, I'm more pro-"mom should do what is best for her situation and all other's should keep their noses out." Smiley
118  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Mirror Mirror (Female Toddler edition) on: 2006 April 02, 00:58:57
I went with Marj too, she's got this weird "little old lady" expression going on. I hope the poor things will improve with age. I haven't seen the toddler teeth pokng through the chin in my game but I've seen shots of it numerous times in photo albums.

I've got a set of my own uglies who's only hope seems to be the plastic surgery machine. Kevin Beare's (Sim State frat boy) features don't seem to pass on all that well, even when his wife is quite pretty. All three of their children have his pug nose and pointy cheekbones. They have really great personalities but man they're ugly. When the oldest, Emma, went to Sim State I couldn't stand it anymore and unlocked the career rewards. I was worried that when she went to kiss her boyfriend she'd put one of his eyes out with her cheekbones. Lips sealed

120  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / Re: *sigh* Yet another stuck grade bar issue in Uni. on: 2006 March 29, 01:08:24
It never did resolve itself. His bar stayed stuck every single semester. Made me nervous that he would have problems graduating and moving back to the regular neighborhood but there were no problems with that. He and Klara are just fine in the regular neighborhood raising their twin daughters. It did happen one other time back in early October to a Uni townie who moved into one of the sororities but I ended up having to reinstall for other reasons so I never was able to see if I could fix it. It hasn't happened to another sim yet (knocks on wood) but I guess if it does I'll have to live with the guessing again. Though with TwoJeffs college adjuster it's easy to click "set semester grade...A" then "set final exam...2 hours" and the sim will come back from the final with the A and the grant money. I sure wish I knew what causes the glitch though. I hope it's not a sign of an impending EFBVFOS. Shocked
121  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / Re: *sigh* Yet another stuck grade bar issue in Uni. on: 2006 March 29, 00:55:20
I had the stuck grade bar thing with a created student when I moved him and Klara Vonderstein in together. Moving him out and back in didn't do a thing. What was strange was that if I had him do a couple of assignments, his term paper, attend a couple of classes (then move up his final with TJ's college adjuster) he'd come back from the final with a good grade. I was even able to graduate him and move him back to my regular neighborhood without a problem. It was just kind of annoying to have to "guesstimate" where I thought his score was really at before sending him to the final. I'd use TJ's college adjuster to give him the semester grade of an A just to make sure.
122  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: Weasel's 19th Century Challenge on: 2006 March 16, 17:43:18
Yay, another history lover! Hi SarahKjrsten. Thanks for the tip about the remeshed food processor/morter & pestle, I'm going to go check out MTS2 and see if I can find it.

The other thing with this challenge is I've been wondering about is if there should be a minor penalty to going above a certain number of sims dying from old age. 50% of children died before they reached the age of 5, the #1 cause of death among women was fire (getting too close to the fire in those long skirts, especially when wearing a crinoline) and #2 was childbirth. Though I wonder how that should be worked in the challenge, roll a dice or something to determine whether the sim lives or dies to the next stage.  Huh
123  TS2: Burnination / Planet K 20X6 / Re: Weasel's 19th Century Challenge on: 2006 March 15, 19:44:54
My thoughts on this challenge are that wealthier families did employ gardeners and nannies. And some of the ceiling fixtures in the game do resemble gas lights that were available around the 1850's. And while it was the "women's work" to take care of the inside of the house the menfolk were responsible for the gardening in the working class families.

And without the phone, how are sims supposed to keep in contact? Our ancestors kept in touch through the mail or telegraph and we don't have that option in the sims. They also "went calling" where they would rotate visiting their friends and having their own specific "at home" day where their friends could call upon them. Unless you used something like Inge's teleporter to bring their friends over on a certain day to visit you'd have to use the phone to bring them over.

I could be wrong but I was certain that early versions of telescopes existed during this time period. Scottish inventor James Short apparently made over 1500 of his version.

Business careers would also be appropriate for men (think of all the entrepeneurs of the time period!) and so would either Science career. The science careers could be the equivalent of the "quacks" who peddled their wares like "Dr. Jones Hair Restoring Tonic."

Girls sometimes would obtain secondary education in "finishing school" where they would become proficient in art, music or language. It was to show how "accomplished" they were. If a female sim went to a university a degree in art or philosophy would be acceptable.

And since we don't have old fashioned iceboxes, cookstoves or bath fixtures like we did with Sims1 what would be a good alternative?  Huh Do you know of any good custom content around? I remember one of Maxis' past surveys when the mentioned the shopping packs and a "history" pack was one of the ideas. I sure hope they make a pack like that someday.

Sounds like a really interesting challenge. I have to admit I'm not into having my teens marry or have children though. I've got a book around here somewhere that seems to indicate that marrying during the teen years and having children was actually the exception and most of our ancestors married in their late teens early 20's. I'll go look for it. Drat, I just can't find that book. It had some statistics in it of the people researched and showed that the majority of both genders married in their 20's as opposed to the belief that most married in their teens. I'll keep looking for it though.

125  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: The Entrepreneural Spirit - Building and selling businesses. on: 2006 March 14, 03:16:59
For most people, this will be the first time they've ever heard of this concept.  I've been studying it since 1979.  And if making money selling a business is gamey or cheating, then why does a business even *have* a value?  The value is from the customer loyalty stars.  Relates closely to goodwill in real life terms.  Some people are good at starting things, others would prefer to buy a turnkey operation that's already established.

Actually when I saw your initial post Hook it made me think of in RL when people "flip" houses. They buy a fixer, do some remodeling and sell it for a profit about 6 weeks or so after they've bought it. Some people actually make a good living from it.
