Title: Can't place modular stairs
Post by: witch on 2009 April 12, 11:13:32
I have all EPs and most SPs. This is my test folder and I have no cc except the magic wand and CEP - for when I'm testing cc. My modular stairs tell me they cannot find a bottom landing, they tell me this whether there is a foundation below or not. This is happening on (25 Toboggan Way?) the April House of Phail lot. I haven't tested any other lots. Any ideas why?

You're not trying to build them next to a wall, are you? That's been borken since AL or M&G, I think. It works with moveobjects on, though.

Ah ha! Yes I am! If the wall is deleted can it be added back after the stairs are placed? Guess there's one way to find out! I thought I was going nuts when I couldn't figure it out. Also moveobjects on. Yes I'll try that too. Cheers Annan.

Yes, the wall can be re-placed, but I find moveobjects on easier -- especially if you've already done wallpaper and stuff.

I've found I can't place modular stairs at all without moveobjects on, even if they are nowhere near a wall. Farkin' annoying.

I'd had the problem in my main hood with all the cc and thought I must have been having a conflict with some outdated cc stairs. I have removed a few bits of cc to to test but had no joy. I often have problems one way and another and have so little time to play the sims that when I do all my time seems to be spent problem solving.

Sometimes people say to me, did you play your game last night? No, I say, I spent the evening fixing the bloody thing.

I certainly would not have picked that this was an EAxis problem, not something so intrinsic to the game. I was baffled when it happened in a cc free hood.  :-\

I thought it might be the Crocobura open underneath stairs causing problems, but no. Oh, btw, I can place the stairs down from foundations and stages ok, just not from one floor to another. ::)

I have been placing the stairs and then putting the wall. It probably has something to do with the ability to slide down the banisters. The game will also give that error when you have the .package file for the stairs but the script for them is not there, or is wrong.

I've never seen my sims slide down modular stairs banisters, just the spiral stairs ones.

I'm almost sure I spotted a sim sliding down a straight stair, once. I remember this because I also thought it happens only with spiral stairs. Probably not a modular one, though; this would make sense.

They do it on the Mansions & Gardens ones. I'm not sure about the basegame straight stairs. I don't use them. I actually only have the M&G one in one house, the mayoral manse in Darlington Shores. Because two story taking up only 25% of a 3x2 can totally be considered a mansion in my game.

They do for the base game stairs, too.  One of the Pleasant girls slid down the banister of the stairs in their house.  Stairs hadn't been replaced by newer ones either.

It's semigloballed and only 6ses and 12s can do it, randomly. I have an undiscovered shiny making it somewhat less random, and may repair some borkedness in it as well.

Who needs tight pants when EA provides such a feast built-in?

Also, Gwiiiiiilllllll!! The tutu, quick!

I've only seen it the once, I hope the shiny makes them do it a bit more often.

Is it faster than running down the stairs?  That would make it a useful part of Macrotastics.

Particularly for spiral stairs where the sims cannot run.

Is it possible to fix the stairs/wall issue witch reported or is that the borkedness you mention?

Since when have they broken things that made sense in regards to things they added?

Barely ever, and it is true that you cannot slide down modular stairs. Only placed ones.

wasn't arguing that, just that their added coolness of sliding down the banisters on the other stairs may have something to do with the now brokenness of placing stairs that do not even have this feature. Kind of like breaking the piano or primp, or any of the other things that are broken in every EP or SP.

Probably. I am finding I am using the spiral stairs more and more now though, and only using the modular ones on the foundation. It just pisses me off that stupid EA keeps breaking stuff! I've noticed it has become almost impossible to place windows when there is a roof on the floor below, such as on a fake bay window. I used to be able to place them easily! This game infuriates me! >:(

Spiral stairs have several advantages over modular stairs: They have better "flow control", in that they are much less likely to jam and cause a route failure when large groups of sims are using them. They also have a smaller tile footprint, although not necessarily a better one. However, they achieve this with fixed travel speeds, and are unidirectional only.me

Compared to elevators, they occupy the same footprint and cause MUCH fewer jams and collision, with comparable short-distance travel speeds, as elevators are always on the wrong floor. Elevators, however, are curiously omnidirectional, with people able to travel in opposite directions simultaneously.

It is dumb that you can't run on the spiral stairs... Too bad no one could fix that.

Oh good, it's not just me!  Is there any workaround for this?  It doesn't seem to matter if the roof below is shallow or steep.  The second storey walls refuse to take windows of any size.  I've resorted to building all my shells in another game installation, but it's damn annoying if I need to edit some part of the building later.  Is there a better way?

Does move_objects not work or something?

Title: Re: Can't place modular stairs
Post by: Emma on 2009 April 18, 07:05:15
Not for things like windows or doors, Pescado.

seelindarun, most of the time I use the autoroof tool to get the type of roof I want over the fake bay and have the windows on the second floor already placed, then lock the roofs, remove the other roofs that aren't what I want and either use a different autoroof tool or just make my own roofs. Slightly more time consuming, but it is the only way I could think of doing it.

It's confirmed that the no running things on the spiral stairs is unfixable?  Crap and double crap.  This thread reminded me that I've been meaning to ask here about that very thing, but I guess I've got my answer.  I know Pes hates slow sims and has his run everywhere, and figured if anyone had been able to fix it, he'd have done it by now.  Instead, here he is talking about spiral stair virtues, surprisingly.  I mean yeah, I love the look and small footprint, but the slowness of sims using them has me so "GAHHH!!!" frustrated I can't stand to use them anymore.  Grr.
