Title: Suggest Street Names Please.
Post by: lindaetterlee on 2006 July 08, 09:09:40
I've nearly finished laying down the decor and homes for my new Ellington Township. Now i need street names to go back to name the homes. Anyone have any suggestions.

I don't want anything that really sways to one gender or the other. I would like normal but yet unique names. Anyone know what i mean? Because All i am coming up with is main street. 1st 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. lol

Ideas:

Trees e.g. Oak, Elm, Pine
Famous explorers e.g. Flinders, Stuart, Cook (these are just Australian examples)
Famous inventors e.g. Edison, Bell, Wright, Deere
Wines e.g. Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet, Pinot
Rivers e.g. Rhine, Seine, Danube, Elbe, Rhone (these are just European examples)

I've just done some houses on one street named after a roman emperor (http://www.nectere.net/smf/index.php?topic=338.0) - when I get the energy, I'll finish off the rest of the Julio-Claudians. Personally, I might do a series of houses/streets named after famous poisoners after I've done my romans - but then I'm odd.

Why not name your streets after MATYians?

"Ellington" makes me think of Duke Ellington and jazz.  If it were my neighborhood, I'd name streets after jazz legends like Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Jelly Roll Morton, Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Wynton Marsalis, etc.

Dammit, now you've inspired me - I may have to use this in one of my own future neighborhoods.  :)

OK, I'm going to sound really retarded now, but how do you name streets?  Do you just add it to the house name or what?  I tend to give my houses names associated with the residents, so would I not be able to do that if I named the streets?  Would I have to put something like 101 Ancient Street, rather than Broke Barracks?  Or is there a facility to put Broke Barracks, 101 Ancient Street?  I am really confused now.

I wish you could make custom signs that get layered over the road like in Simcity.

It would show up as 'Broke Barracks, 101 Ancient Street' instead of

'Broke Barracks
101 Ancient Street'

How about the ever popular Sherwood Forest theme? I think it's a law that every American town have at least one Robin Hood Lane  :P
Our downtown has streets named after all the early presidents...

Where I live streets go alphabetical then numerical and then back again. Makes it really easy for newbies.

Anyways, Memorial, Sheridan, Mingo, Garnett, Yale, Lewis, Cincinnati, Peoria our some of the major streets.

So how do I get it to show up as two separate lines?

You've gotten a lot of good suggestions, but I'd ask -- what do you like?

If you like a particular sport, you can name streets after players (some sports have famous male players AND famous female players, such as golf and tennis).

If you like a particular style of music, you can call streets after musicians or songs.

Characters from your favorite books/movies/TV shows?

Places you've lived in the past?  Places you'd like to visit?

The names of all your friends?

I like science, so my university usually has Newton, Edison, Einstein, etc. halls. :-)  I'm thinking of naming my streets after moon locations.

In my old home town we had lots of tree names and Native American tribe names, as well as names of the founding fathers of the town.  And variations on the names of the Great Lakes (I live in Michigan.)  And of course Presidents and famous political figures--there was a big debate some years ago when they changed the name of one of the main roads from 24th St. to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

You can't.  It doesn't work like that.  I do this with my street names, too.  Before I settle down on any families at all, I always lay out the lots and name them appropriately.  I usually draw out a little diagram with the names and odd/even sides to help me in case I get interrupted.  Then again, I'm such a media whore that I use names from movies and video games.  Pirate's Cove, Sparrow Walk, Turner Pass, Hyuga Lane, Valentine Road, Cardinal Street, things like that.

I'm partial to the lovely and quaint names of streets in the UK (of course, I'm partial to most anything from the UK).  Here are a couple of nice lists:

http://knowledgeoflondon.com/streetnames.html
http://www.maybole.org/history/books/CarricksCapital/streets.htm
http://www.brand-dd.com/burntisland/streets.html

And each of my "towns" have to have a High Street, where all the businesses are ;)

I love all the suggestions. I think I am going to use a bunch off the UK list mixed with the some of the famous Jazz players. And possible a street in the slum part of the hood for one very special Matyville Sim. *grins*.

I will try and post a pic of Ellington Township later.  It is coming along quite nicely. Once i finish the mainhood. i have to go and work on Waters Edge. and Endless Winter. Both of these are my Vacation hoods. Waters Edge is a beach hood, and Endless winter is like the north pole. (with a custom santa's house and various winter themed shops, including a christmas tree farm.)

I just must add the two I love to play with...
Alphabet Street (Prince, anyone?)
Sesame Street (123 is the home of Big Bird, but I've forgotten where Bert & Ernie live.)

lol Elf. I can only imagine what "Bert and Ernie" do in their spare time

You could name them after painters e.g. Monet, Vemeer, Renoir etc

I usually name a neigborhood something thematic, then name the streets something to do with that theme.

So if I had a neighborhood called "montmartre" then I could do street names based on parisian landmarks, artists that lived in that district, popular things during that time frame, etc. I think it adds for a wider variety of streetnames, while retaining a certain continuity.

I have a lot of city maps and I like to pick names from the indexes.  I grew up in a very Catholic town that had street names like Fatima Street, Lisieux Drive, Lourdes Avenue, St Patrick Street, Notre Dame Avenue.  Around here (E. Ontario) there's almost always a King Street, a Queen Street, or some street named after royalty--Prince Arthur, King Charles, Princess Louise, Queen Elizabeth, etc.  Plus names of important foreigners like Sydenham, Brock, Wolfe, Johnson, Hull, Dalhousie, and Durham.

Murder Street! Street of Eternal Suffering! Well, maybe not...

I had problems with coming up with good street names too, but after watching how my sims behave, I decided to name my streets after vegetables.

I use the names of politicians and characters from classic novels - I think one of my neighbourhoods has a "Thatcher Way" in it somewhere. I scare even myself sometimes.

Really? I've never heard of that. I have seen a Louis Lane once, though. There is also an area of town where everything is named after musical instruments and composers. We also have a lot of streets named after states, and generals for some reason.

My favorite, though, is the intersection of Courthouse and Gallows road. I also like Hooker drive and Wasp lane.

I donīt have any specifick names ... but I use this site : http://lowchensaustralia.com/names.htm (http://lowchensaustralia.com/names.htm) to find names. There is a ton of names for almost anything, and another ton of links to more names.

When I first saw this post, I was surprised at the simplicity of the request. It sounded like the kind of thing you see on BBS. What's really puzzling to me is, how come a smart person like you, who wants hacks to make the game harder, can't think of names for streets? There's an entire world of names out there. Everything in the world has a name, and each name can be used for something else. It's just really puzzling that a brainy person like you couldn't figure this out for herself.

Because sometimes you use your own brain so much it begins to look old. Two brains are better than one. That's why collaboration is a good thing. ;D

Well As I see it; I've been playing this game every day since it came out. I've never missed a day. At least an hour of every day is simming. Sometimes Marathon simming lasting nearly a day. I've created over 40 complete hoods. Running 10+ at any time. After a while you start to feel like you have use the best already. That is why I like to ask others and spawn ideas off the community. Personally I feel that is what a extremely smart person such as myself would do.

Sometimes when you have played the game lots you struggle to think of names for things.

What I do is take something that interests me and take names and references from that.
For example I currently have a neighboorhood whose streets are named after some of my fav classic rock albums.
Maybe you can do something simular with an interest.

*goes back to lurking* :P
