Title: Autonomous practice speech?
Post by: Lion on 2006 February 17, 00:28:30
Do sims practice speech on their own? I'm not sure about it. In one of the lots I played some time ago, sims practiced speech on their own on the wall-length glass, and I'm not sure if it is paradise glass from MTS2 or Maxis one from EP. That's the only time I saw that happen. So do you know?

Also, can sims gain mechanical skills on their own? They don't repair on their own, do they?

Actually, sims with high mechanical skills will repair the computer - especially if they want to use it!

That's very nice.

And they were definitely "practicing speech" and not just checking themselves out? Mine seem to be addicted to their mirrors, vain little pixel people.

Mostly teenagers, when they have nothing more urgent to do, like having fun!  Not so different from human teenagers, really!

Can be. But the only truly accidental death I've ever had in my game was when a sim fried himself while autonomously repairing a computer while his needs were low. It was a long time ago, and I had no idea they would do that on their own. He was upstairs and I wasn't watching him.

I'm a recent convert to free-will off though. Not because of that incident. Just because I was sick of it all.

The only time one of my sims did that was repairing the exercise machine!  Since then, if I queue a sim to repair anything electrical, I always save first, just in case, then I can alwasy quit without saving.  I would always rather lose hours of game-play than lose a sim I'd put three times as long into growing up etc., so even if the worst had happened in this case, I would still have quit the game without saving!

I've had sims repair computers and unclog toilets on their own.  I think one of them fixed the big tv on her own, too.  But they do have to have high mech skills before they'll do it autonomously.

Don't think I've had any fix a dishwasher or trash compactor, though.  Can't remember if any fixed a shower or tub, but may have.

One of mine fried herself when she decided to fix a computer herself, too.  But she has just got up for the day and was full green in everything, so she didn't die.  She wasn't full green afterwards, though! Lol.

I sometimes wonder whether it's if they've just washed up, or had a shower, that they fry themselves - it was in the original sims 1 when they went to change a lightbulb!  and maybe it happens to the repair man more often AFTER he's fixed the shower and got drenched?

I kind of wondered that myself, ZZ.  Haven't had a repairman in a long time, and I think the last time I did he coudn't repair whatever it was that was broken.  And this was since the "unrepairable stereo" problem was fixed.  My workaround for that one was to place the stereo out on a deck.  It could be fixed then.  But I had a few sims (and repairmen) get shocked on that stereo before I moved it!

Some wierd sense of humour at Maxis no doubt!  (Or just poor programming.)
