476  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: best way to prune custom hair packages? on: 2005 December 06, 23:44:43
I can't find the link at the moment, but there's def. a post that tells you how to prune the unnecessary age data. Basically, under the age lines in property set, you replace what ever value there w/ a zero value. So 0x00004 gets changed to 0x00000, and so on for all the ages you don't want.

That's what I thought as soon as I saw the pic. Iron Chef! But how unfortunate that Maxis humour must be parlayed into horrible fashion. I like fashion, and I like humour. Can't the two just coexist peacefully?  Cry
478  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Default Replacement Skins on: 2005 December 06, 03:15:34
Downloaded the dds utilities. Don't have the option to build dxt when I right click on a texture image file. I did however have build dds when I clicked on the picture. Did you mean the picture or the texture image file? Do I just replace it with another texture file (what kind of file bmp., png.)? So I have to extract all the texture files from the skin that I want and then import the images into the default file? I keep getting error messages so I think I'm doing something wrong. As I said I'm simpe challenged. I can't figure things out unless I have it step-by-step with very clear instructions: eg. Step One: Open a default file with simpe. Step Two: Click this exact button. Step Three: Click some other exact button. I guess that's why I liked ldms510's tutorial. It told me exactly how to do it. If I can't figure this out I guess I'll just stick with the "old fashioned way."  Undecided Thanks very much for trying to help me anyway. Smiley

Aah. Forgot to add this - make sure you tell SimPE that the utilities are on your comp. Otherwise it won't know. Go to extra > preferences. There should be a line for the location of the DDS utilities. Type in/Browse for the location. Click ok. Then "Build DXT" opens up.

And don't give up so easily. It's not good to underestimate yourself.  Wink
479  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Default Replacement Skins on: 2005 December 06, 02:24:12
Well, as I am simpe challenged, would you mind posting how to use someome else's default to make your own? I have no idea how to go about accomplishing that. I would appreciate it a lot if it's way easier as you say.

First, just d/l the Nvidia DDS utilities. There should be a link to it on the SimPE site. Then, open up the default you want to edit. For each texture, right click it and click "Build DXT". Pick a file, click ok. Commit. Repeat w/ each texture until you've editied the ones you want. Save. And that's it.
480  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Default Replacement Skins on: 2005 December 06, 02:14:29
I've heard of other people doing it this way, too. For some reason, though, I just like something about building it from scratch because then I know that everything is right. You know what I mean? I guess I'm just anal. Roll Eyes

I suppose. But considering that this just changes the textures the game pulls, and nothing else, doing it this way is no less stable than doing it from scratch. And on top of that it saves a LOT of time. I built the entire light default from scratch before I realized I could do it this way, and then I had to kick myself for wasting all that time when I coulda been over and done w/it, and playing the game instead.
481  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Default Replacement Skins on: 2005 December 06, 02:00:27
http://www.geocities.com/ldms510/Defaulting.html

It's very easy if you follow the instructions step by step. I don't know anything about simpe, but I was able to get this right on the first try so you probably won't have any problems. Right now I'm using simscribbling's skins, but I just change them out whenever I get bored.

A much easier way to do it though, is just to d/l a default skintone, and replace the textures w/ your own. Much quicker than building a package from scratch. The only thing you have to be careful of is using "Build DXT" to import your textures rather than the "import" feature, b/c the first time I edited my skins, I totally screwed them up by using the "import" feature.
482  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Default Replacement Skins on: 2005 December 06, 01:50:09
For light, I use the 805 female body, w/ the belly ring removed, w/ the 705 male bodies and "air brushed" their faces b/c otherwise they all look like they've got skin problems. For tan, I use the 705 skin, but I'm not so happy w/ that, and I've been scouring for replacements. For med to dark, I use the Oepu skintones which can be found on MTS2, and while the med skintone required some major editing, the dark one is fantastic and flaw free - the best default I've found so far.

In my experience, there's always bound to be at least one issue w/ some part of a skin or another, and it's quite hard to find a skin that'll flatter all face types and all sims in a skin category. That's why I've basically gathered up the stuff I liked and put them all other. One part here, another part there. That way, you're guaranteed a result you'll like.
483  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: New OFB info on: 2005 December 05, 22:13:36
I hated Unleashed as well. And it was doubly disappointing b/c it was the first EP I had preordered, and I was so excited for it. What a letdown. The only thing it had going for it was the expansion of the neighborhood, whereupon I could populate my hood w/ more sims than was previously possible.

Not too into space, though, but travel would be awesome. One of the major things that made Vacation for TS1 boring was the real lack of flavor of most of the lots. Barring the snowy lots, which I thought were awesome, the woody/beach lots weren't much different from the regular neighborhood lots, which made them SO boring to play. The beach lots had the added annoyance of being a dull sandy color all over, yet with absolutely no view of any body of water. IMO, that's not a beach, that's a DESERT!!!

I'd definitely welcome the addition of more exotic locales, and very versatile tools to really mix 'em up, so we can make tropical rainforests, and high mountains that swirl w/ fog (like some of the mtns in China...so beautiful!), and a lusher beach environment, etc.,etc. There's no way that Maxis will ever be able to make enough diff. vacation spots to satisfy everyone's palettes, or do justice to the diverse beauty of all the diff regions of the world. That's why, in a vacation EP, good tools are key to providing the best experience for all. And w/ the talent of the community, I'm sure they'll be able to churn out more awe-inspiring lots than Maxis could ever manage.

Anyway...lol...that's what I'd love for an EP. If they come out w/ something like this, Maxis would have my money for sure.
484  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: New OFB info on: 2005 December 05, 20:12:23
New stuff is all good and well, but I'd prefer that they get the basic stuff out of the way first.

Hmm...maybe its too early to tell, but it seems that Maxis is alternating the basic stuff w/ new stuff, hence we got the base game, then uni, which was new, then NL, which was old, then OFB, which is again new. So maybe for next EP we'll get something from the original line again.

I personally am hoping for a newer, better Vacation. Now, I agree that the original Vacation was kinda boring. But I miss the ability to ship my sims off to a nice winter lodge or something, and be able to have them stay for however long I want, w/out the pressures of work or kids or whatnot. I know we can do this in the game right now w/ hacked residential objs, but the issue w/ this is mainly that we can't save, which is annoying if you're playing for a stretch and something goes screwy on you, and you'd lose everything you'd done up to that pt if you exit w/out saving. And remember how Maxis was saying Sims could own vacation houses? They should really reinstate that. I was really looking forward to that feature. Sad Extra features for living the leisure life would be swell too, cuz that's how I mostly play my sims. I'm vicariously living my dreams of being fabulously rich and livin' it up. Tongue
485  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Sims Personality Test on: 2005 December 05, 07:21:20
I would've got higher active score, but I'm really tired all the time right now (stupid anaemia Tongue)

Ooh. I have that too. And its the genetic-mutation type that you can't take drugs for. Sad Really sux.

Lol. Just realized how that sounded. No, I am not a mutant.  Tongue
486  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Less Awesome Than Everyone on: 2005 December 05, 07:15:24
Hmm...I'm not so sure as to the accuracy of this, as I once moved all my CC out of downloads in order to test a bug, and when I loaded up a lot with terrain paints, all I had were merely flashing blue where the terrain had been. No crashing... at least so far....so I dunno...
487  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: About bringing that Tricou family back to life on: 2005 December 05, 03:41:33
The Tricous are quite handsome sims and a great deal of fun to play.

Really? Got any pictures? I'd love to see some pictures.  Grin
488  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: About bringing that Tricou family back to life on: 2005 December 05, 02:21:02
Who are the Tricous? I keep hearing about them, but I have no idea who they are... Huh
489  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: My game freezes my computer on: 2005 December 04, 19:17:48
I have the groups.cache file as read-only...

Is that supposed to be read-only? My groups.cache (the one under \My Documents\) file updates every time I play.

I do believe that objects.package is the file that should be put on read-only.

And can I ask just what your specs are? It could be a game bug, but it could just as well be a system issue.
490  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Sims Personality Test on: 2005 December 04, 06:38:44
4/4/2/8/5

Well, I figured I was lazy, but not that lazy. I mean, 2? C'mon.

I didn't expect playfulness to be that high either, cuz I tend to be rather serious at times.
491  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Animated custom hair on: 2005 December 03, 22:07:17

Wow! Thank you for that link. I downloaded 3 beautiful hairmeshes and am now armed and dangerous enough to go on a townie make-over spree!  Shocked Cool

Just a bit of warning though. The last time I d/led the Jessica Rabbit-type hair from that site, not only did it have enormous gaps, but it turned out to be about 10,000 polys. Needless to say, I chucked them all. I dunno if they've updated the meshes or anything, but I personally would go over your files in SimPE to be sure.
492  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Animated custom hair on: 2005 December 02, 20:36:46
Here are the bin numbers I've noticed and the catagories I've seen them in:
0x0000000B (eyes)

Eyes?? Does this mean that if you put costume makeup in this particular bin, your sim will have no eyes? Or will it have the default eyes?

And another question - If you manually change the bin, say from eyeliner to eyeshadow, will the thumbnails for the makeup remain in the eyeliner bin or no? And is there a way to move the categories w/out opening up bodyshop?
493  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Animated custom hair on: 2005 December 02, 07:41:16
Thnx you guys!  Grin

But can I ask, is there any way to get more than one face mask on a sim? Cuz it seems right now I'll have to choose between freckles or braces...but I'd definitely love to use them both on one sim.
494  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Animated custom hair on: 2005 December 02, 06:31:17
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to go looking for that hair at MTS2, I'm a sucker for ponytails  Cheesy.
The freckles are Maxis made ones hidden in the game that someone extracted. I think they are the only thing I ever downloaded from the Exchange  Cheesy

Really? Are they face makeup? I'd love that for my Angela Broke. I think she'd look so cute w/ freckles. Do you know who exactly on the exchange made them? Or perhaps you could send it to me? A search for freckles on the BBS turns out about 500 results, and I really am not looking for user made ones, which make up the bulk of the search results.

yeah, I hate those gaps.  I really really do.  Now XM sims has some pretty good hairs. (wild colors, but cute and well done). I've downloaded a bunch that were catagorized into the color bins and all that had crappy textures. I figure that I'll look at fixing the textures if the meshes have no other problems, but there are lots of them that I look at in the game and toss, too.

Really? I think XM Sims has really nice textures. They're all so detailed and so glossy! I dunno where they get their textures from. But they all look really nice.
495  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Animated custom hair on: 2005 December 02, 05:44:01
Speaking of custom hair, does anyone have PeggySims' donation meshes ingame? Can you guys tell me if her hairs look/work nice ingame? W/ all the talk of hairs not living up to their screenshots, I'm wondering they're really as nice as they look. Right now, from the screens, I'm seriously, seriously tempted to just subscribe to her site, since she now has a subscription area instead of individual donation items.

If you like pretty boys you should check out my SimFreezepop. The best thing is that Freezepop are a real band and the boys are that pretty in real life Smiley.

I dunno, they look a bit old for me... But speaking of pretty boys...that little kid from Air Bud has matured wonderfully over the yrs...I was shocked at just how HOT he is now!

*drool*
497  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Nightmare scenarios. on: 2005 December 01, 23:06:56
I'm afraid you hit a nerve, here, so I'm going to soapbox at you.
Why on earth does makeup on a guy scream transgendered to you? That doesn't make any sense because cosmetics are not inherently female. Sure, popular Western culture has more or less chosen to push the belief that this is so, but as far as I can tell most guys who wear makeup aren't unhappy with being male.  Conversely, the MtFs I do know of span just as wide a range of likes about 'feminine' things as non-trans women and some don't wear makeup or dresses or any of that so-called feminine crap. Then there are FtM folks who are also transgendered, and shockingly, whether or not they wear makeup has very little to do with their transgenderedness (and yes, I do know a FtM who wears makeup). Makeup has very little to do with much of anything, really, Rocky Horror Picture Show and other such overblown cultural icons aside.
I dunno. You can think whatever you like, but you may want to look into what actual real life transgendered people do and don't do before you continue saying things like that because someday someone is REALLY going to get up your ass about it. Wink It's a pretty stupid stereotype.

Well, I think this is an example of the whole a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square issue in math. Where p->q != q->p. In this case, while transgendered does not necessarily imply full blown feminine makeup, full blown feminine makeup a la RuPaul is very much suggestive of a transgendered person. Again, p->q != q->p.

Pple do tend to get a bit touchy over such issues, but really, lighten up. I didn't mean it as an insult, you can be sure.
498  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Nightmare scenarios. on: 2005 December 01, 22:02:27
I like pretty boys when they're cute enough...and I do think Josh veers a bit towards pretty boy...but makeup is where I draw the line. Contouring and foundation, and a bit of lip balm, maybe...but full blown makeup? That just screams transgendered to me.

But hey, to each his own. And Komei's kid is really quite nice, once you look past the makeup and all. Wink I'm surprised. Lol.
499  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Recategorising hair with SimPE on: 2005 December 01, 17:30:47
When I started w/ this, I used one set of hairs that I messed up repeatedly b4 I finally reached the result I wanted. After fiddling around w/ Datgen, cuz it seemed easier, I'm now using just SimPE. DatGen has issues w/ the selecting, so you can only select one file at a time, and some changes don't stick, and dragging dumps everything in one bin, which is problematic for customizing elders. Correcting the little issues takes more time than just straightforward editing in SimPE. So now I just manually go over everything in SimPE when I d/l it, and on top of that manually prune my files to delete the non-edited textures. I wish I'd have discovered how to categorize earlier, though, cuz I've got tons of hair files in my d/l folder, and I'm waiting for the day when I'll feel like editing them all.
