Title: EAxis house of Phail: May 09
Post by: Mootilda on 2009 May 01, 19:55:40
By a quick but popular vote, this month's house is:
4 Danish Drive from University, remade as a base game lot by ciane (thanks!)

Lot attached here is ciane's lot with edges flattened, CC removed, and compressed.

Rules copy and pasted from last month:

1. No CC.  Please indicate stuff packs so people who wish to download your lot know what to expect.  Pictures are required, either available for download, on a slideshow, or posted in this thread.

2. By entering this challenge, you agree to take constructive criticism.  If you wish to judge someone else's entry, you should be respectful but honest.

3. Your lot does not have to be Awesomespec, although it is encouraged.

4. You may move internal walls and add external walls but you may NOT move original external walls.

5. Lots may be furnished, unfurnished, or partially furnished.  You can even upload both furnished and unfurnished versions.

Bonus rules:

6. Leave the space between the buildings intact. You can connect the duplexes in front or behind the original walls, but can't join them together in the middle.

Popular vote for June (so far):
407 Edgewater Parkway from Bluewater

I vote 407 Edgewater for June, that had my vote for this month, but I fail at posting on time.

Does that mean no joining them together on an upper floor (while leaving the ground floor space available)?

I agree entirely! Seriously, what were they thinking when they made that lot?

Ahh, never mind. Probably the same thing they were thinking when they came up with the idea for the cowplant.

No, you can join them together on the second/third/whatever floor, just not at the ground level.

I have another question. I am an airhead, remember?
Can I put a foundation there for a raised deck, as long I don't enclose it with walls, or is that going against the spirit of leaving it open?

It's probably breaking the spritspirit of the rule, but this isn't a contest. It's a challenge, so if you feel like breaking it we can't stop you.

Edit: Fixed the typo. Damn typos.

Does this also prohibit building a second story above the gap? (You'd have to build in underneath temporarily in order to place the walls all the way across, but it could be done.)

Heh. Reading comprehension for the lose. Thanks.

Hm. The separate buildings present an interesting challenge. I think I'll actually try and keep them separate for now, see how far that gets me.

Hey jesslla.. whassa "sprit"?

Sprit
Sprit\, v. t. [Akin to G. spritzen, spr["u]tzen. See Sprit, v. i.] To throw out with force from a narrow orifice; to eject; to spurt out. [Obs.] --Sir T. Browne.

Sprit
Sprit\, v. i. [AS. spryttan to sprout, but. See Sprout, v. i., and cf. Spurt, v. t., Sprit a spar.] To sprout; to bud; to germinate, as barley steeped for malt.

Sprit
Sprit\, n. A shoot; a sprout. [Obs.] --Mortimer.

Sprit
Sprit\, n. [OE. spret, AS. spre['o]t a sprit; spear; akin to D. spriet, and E. sprout, sprit, v.t. & i. See Sprout, v. i.] (Naut.) A small boom, pole, or spar, which crosses the sail of a boat diagonally from the mast to the upper aftmost corner, which it is used to extend and elevate.

But methinks I like Giggy's definition better. LOL

I kept to the spirit of the rules and placed a sprite in my garden.
I thought two people sharing the house would benefit from sharing a kitchen, so I added more space in the back and gutted the place.

Home Away From Home, a simple community lot. I decided not to extend the buildings at all, but I did gut and rebuild the interiors. If you wanted to buy it and own it as a business, you can expect to be set back around $57,957. I have play-tested it, and everything works.

What a lovely house, ciane, and Faizah, I've liked everything I see you post.  You both make me sad posting my insanity.

Aforementioned insanity: http://www.box.net/shared/pxb9z1ngt5 (http://www.box.net/shared/pxb9z1ngt5)
This is my backup copy - I re-uploaded it to the site, let me know how it works.  I think that when I removed the phone line controller the first time and hit "Save As," it did a weird thing to the package.  I may have misunderstood how to use that option, I do apologize.

I created a community lot too.

Pics:

We have on the right a pool, on the left two hot tubs, and the front entryway is lined with small ponds and a few places for lovers to cuddle.

The front hall is done up in flame wallpaper (keep in mind this entire house is an experiment with items I don't usually use, so you'll see mostly the repetitive wallpapers here) and dark wood accents.  The white double doors lead to the bathroom, the pinkish-red door leads to the restaurant side.

Behind the camera in the left wing we have the sports/birthday party room, brightly colored, probably giving the poor employees headaches after too long in there, hehehe.

The room beyond that is what I have nicknamed Hippie Party.  Similar purpose as the Sports room.  Easier on the eyes though.

The last room on this side is the poker room, with beer/snack fridge and good luck frog watching over all gamblers.  Muted lighting to protect your cards from sneaks walking to said fridge.

Back through the front hall, we now return to the restaurant.  More ridiculous colors, but it was a lot of fun to make.  Same with the retardedly green kitchen.  I think they both turned out rather nice.

ciane, that is pretty neat. i like the shared kitchen - it reminds me of posh dorms with everyone having their own living space but having to share a kitchen.

faizah, the wild and wooly look is great! and i like the glass box columns on the right.

pentabet, it's asking me for a password on the slideshow.

*snags both*

Here's my offering for the month. It costs about $93,000 and has room to sleep 4 plus a crib. Dining area seats 6, with four more in the sunroom. I've got all EPs and SPs but HH. Scanned with Clean Installer and playtested for a little bit to make sure sims can move around.

pentabet - I like several things you did with your house. I think I shall steal some of your ideas. Two thumbs up for using that oddball wall paper in a creative way. I think I may have to build a pink theme diner based on your dining room.
thegrimtuesday - Your house is so charming!
Faizah -I like your commerical lot. Your grounds are especially nice.

Now I shall present the House of Reasonable Priced Love:

(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/sims%202/sims%202%20challenges/Groundsharem1.jpg)-Lots of fun things for your bunnies to do. On the other side of the house is a bbq and a swimming pool.
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/sims%202/sims%202%20challenges/frontroomharem.jpg)-the door to the harem is DISGUISED as a book case.
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/sims%202/sims%202%20challenges/bedroomharem.jpg)- The bedroom is slightly different as I added tiny fencing around the bed. I think that it could mean more that one lady can entertain. The floor has been change to tiger yellow and tiger fur to help match the fencing.

This has not been tested. It may suck. But if you download House of Reasonable Love you are probably into sucking, you sick puppy.
I have all EPs and Sps.

pentabet, I scanned the package with CI and it's coming up as an empty package. might you have scanned it and tried to save it with the same filename and in the same place as the original? that always results in an empty package for me. annoying.

I realized that after I added on to the other houses and gutted all the inner walls that I had gutted some walls that were outer walls before. So I put the essential walls back in and readjusted a few things. Now there are entrances with hall closets and a few more plants. I also changed out a kitchen window because the kitchen is now a couple tiles longer. Anyway, the slide show link is here:
http://s45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/ciane/new/?action=view&current=973c48bf.pbw

The download link is here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/228837952/4_Ciane_Dane_Drive.Sims2Pack.html

I checked and there is no phone controller attached now. There is also no phone in the house; so if you decide to play it, it needs a phone.

Used K&B and M&G stuff packs.
No uni, OFB, or pets currently loaded.

I've lurked these threads forever but this is the first time I've ever decided to participate.  I also have to preface this with a note on my LOVE of this lot.  Yes, I've had it cloned (in its maxis-ness) for a long time and use it as non-AL apartments WITHOUT making it over (because I'm lazy like that).  So for me its not as phail as a lot of the Showcase of Phail homes chosen for these challenges.

OK, here we go.

From the street.

Bird's eye of the whole lot.

First floor overview, complete with sitting area and bedroom.

Inside the bedroom (just wanted to show off the funky window being used in place of wall art).

On the stairs to the second floor, looking back at the living/sitting room.

At the top of the stairs looking into the kitchen/eating area.

Overview of kitchen area.  (sadly there is no smoke detector or sprinkler system thanks to the greenhouse roof--cook with caution)

On the bridge, looking back at the kitchen.

Overview of greenhouse/art area.

Overview of the dungeon-like bathroom and sauna area (down the stairs from the greenhouse/art area).

Dressing area (door leads to bathroom).

Overview of just the bathroom.

And last but not least, turn left off the stairs to get to the sauna.

Now, the garden.

A view kind of from the sidewalk (just wanted to show off the frogs, they amuse me).

Zen garden thing (why yes, Bon Voyage is still new to me, what gave it away?).

Finally, a little reverse shot from the back of the garden looking out.

I haven't play tested this lot so I can't say how annoying it might be to work with.  I have all EPs EXCEPT AL and all stuff packs EXCEPT M&G and Ikea.  (oh and I just realized it doesn't have a phone--oops)

When I saw the lot name, I thought these two houses do not look like a danish house (Thatched Roof House). So I tried to create the look of one and the furnishing of modern danish homes, but I have never been to Denmark. I only adore the pictures on design sites. With some recolors installed the furnishings could look nicer to your taste. It is not a starter house, but just a bit over the cost of two starter house in one. It would be a good mother/daughter cottages I think, for a YA who studies from the home lot.

It contains no CC but require all the eps listed below.

The Apartments at 4 Danish Drive

Download here (http://www.linuxbit.net/Sims2/EA_House_Challenge/4_Danish_Drive/4_Danish_Drive.rar) (rar format).

I have all expansions and all stuff packs.

The apartment complex features four apartments ranging in price from §660 to §884/wk. Each apartment is designed with a different sort of family in mind.

Outside ammenities include a playground for children, a relaxing hot tub for adults, a courtyard for bbq's and chess playing.

Two sun rooms provide climate controlled lounging and study.

Apartment 1 is for the plant loving sim. Main colors of this apartment are cheerful green, warm yellow, and soothing cream, and vibrant red. The balcony outside is completely covered with plants.

Apartment 2 is perfect for a small family with a young daughter. Princess bedroom, cheerful kitchen, piano for that budding genius, and a restful bedroom for the parents (tiny bathroom not shown).

Apartment 3 was designed for the single knowledge Sim. A computer, telescope and easel are provided to facilitate learning, while the warm brown colors stimulate the mind. The cool blue bathroom and grey bedroom provide a place to relax after a long day.

Finally, Apartment 4's occupant is the quintessential Pleasure Sim. A poker table, stereo, and guitar provide the perfect setup for wild late night parties, while the weight machine keeps your Sim looking fit and buff. A spacious bathroom and bedroom with a double bed gives potential dates a reason to come back for more.

Jesslla, I really like the way they are combined with glass windows. It helps keep the seperate look. I also like those front balconies and the way the apartment juts out in the middle of the balcony and the balcony wraps around it.

you put it somewhere else? <whine>

Thanks!

I had no problem downloading without having to sign up. In fact I downloaded it twice because I closed without saving the first time because the phone rang and I forgot I hadn't saved when I came back.

I really like the apartment's, jesslla.  Very euro-chic.  The glass "breezeway" effect is very good.  Unfortunately, this was going to be my idea as well.  Ho hum.  Back to the drawing board.

Hmmm. Perhaps it is because I keep my browser security settings locked down so tight. Husband always
complains about that when he uses my rig. Will check when I get home.

If you still can't get it to work (I just checked the link and it worked for me so I'm not sure how to help you), I can try and host it somewhere else (hmm, I think I have another spot I use for sims stuff. . .I'll have to look that up).

I've been lurking in these threads a long time, I really love what you guys do with the Maxis houses, the Curious Bro's house was probably my favourite.

I did start work on this one, though if I ever finish it is another matter. I only recently arrquired Mansion and Garden stuff so I was playing with the new roofs (which annoyingly appear to not really be roofs, but objects which don't go away if you put the walls down, though I'm probably doing it wrong). I had in mind the lot belonging to a good witch and a bad witch, with epic battles on the opposing balconies a la Sims 1. I've only done the outside, not windowed the whole thing yet, mostly just exploring the roofs.

I extended the front foundations, not sure about the porch yet, might scrap it.

Yes, indeed, Trubble.  Looks very Terry Gilliam-esque.  I half expect a giant hedgehog to jump up from behind them and growl, "Dinsdale!"  I think it's the roof shape.  Anyhow, a fine idea.  I like the bottomless chasm particularly.  For is it not written, "Doesn't everyone want a bottomless pit?"

Here is what I came up with for this. Actually it is my second effort. I realized I absolutely hated my first attempt after I got it done, so I nuked it into cyber oblivian. I like this though, but I did use some CC in building it the way I really liked best so I am posting two versions; one with the CC (which is in the pics) included and one clean version. I have all EPs and SPs installed and no idea what I might have used from which of them. I just kind of went with a green theme that might have been more appropriate for a month and a half ago.  ;D Oh, well so what...Kiss Me, I'm Irish!

I think I'm confusing myself with past bonus rules, but is it true that foundations =/= external walls? I really want to change the porches, especially the rear ones. A lot of others have changed the porches. Meh, whatever. I'm considering them ripe for demolition.

The only time porches could not be changed or demolished was when they were specifically restricted in the bonus rules. In this month's lot there are no restrictions of them.

Here is my second presentation for this month's remodel, Chobee Bungalow Apartments. I am attaching both the version in photos that has some CC and which is the play tested version, as well as a "cleaned" version which of course required some replacement items for the CC I had used. I have all EPs and SPs.

Ok done. I kept with the basic footprint of the first floor and added a second. I also tweaked the front and rear porches. You'll notice that front and rear porches are actually made from multilevel fencing. I love that stone fencing, but it overhangs so much that I barely get to use it.

OK, I confess. This month I have contracted the dreaded inspiration virus. Here I present my third effort for this month's challenge; Chobee's Country Cypress Shack. I have uploaded only the CC version because without the CC I used in creation of this one it is going to not look at all right. The "Cypress" siding is actually "Cedar" but was the closest thing I could find to replicate the Cypress that used to be used for much of the building in this part of Florida. It was used because it would last longer in this climate than any imported wood, but it is now illegal to harvest and use Cypress lumber. The only Cypress available now is if it comes from the dismantling of old houses and barns. There are some Cypress homes and buildings over 100 years old still in use around here and most are now declared for historical preservation.

For the photos I changed the street to gravel and lanscaped over the sidewalks. The street has to be redone as well as the sidewalk remnants also every time you enter to play the lot. I know there are people who have made mods to permanently alter streets and sidewalks, but I don't have any of those and don't know how to make them myself.

pentabet, that's a pretty wacky interior. I might use some of those paintings in mine.

MadameUgly, I like that house, the muted colors are lovely. The whole feel of the lot is calmness. And loving the greenhouse top floors. So opposite of any house I ever make!

jesslla, pretty! I like the glassed-in walkway.

Trubble, I like yours! I like the chasm inbetween the two houses, and the ying-yangy feel of the whole place.

chobeegal, are you Irish? Slantje! I love green too, but more because it's nature, not because I see too much green grass here. ;)
Difficult to see your pics.. I may have to download them for a closer look. One thing I noticed though, is that all 3 lots seem to be very symmetrical, which kind of makes me want to skew the houses a bit. I prefer asymmetry, a bit of chaos is always good.

I've started on my house this morning. When I took the roofs and windows off, it looked like 2 boxes, so I just added more boxes stacked on top. It should be done in a few days.

Price: $104,586
EPs required: NL, OFB, Seasons
Furnished?: Partially.
Features: Second floor
Map: First floor (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/hbdragon88/danish_first2.jpg) | Second floor (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/hbdragon88/danish_second2.jpg)

Details: Second house ever built, second attempt at Awesomespec.  I thought I didn't use CC, but the package shows about four recolors, along with this "Phone controller" and a colonial dresser.  The latter might be a EA Store object.

First floor: Both duplexes converted into the "Vomitorium", along with a bathroom and lockable room for the staircase.  The One Desk/Idling room is located in the middle of the room behind the Vomitoriums with a chess set and TV.  I built another door so that Sims driving home can easily access The One Desk room.  Kitchen is lockable.  I managed to squeeze the nursery right next to it.  It's a bit dicey; there could be traffic issues if there's already a kid there playing (not playtested).

Second floor: Two bathrooms, four bedrooms.  Bedrooms large enough to hold a double bed and dresser, or two single beds and a dresser, or any other arrangement, as necessary.

Expandability: The area above the nursery has enough room for a potential third floor staircase.  One or more bedrooms can be converted into other kinds of rooms.  The area between the two south bedrooms can be expanded more (if desired) to fit a hot tub or another set of bathrooms by building foundations and walls on the first floor and then laying down tile.

Awesomespec?: I believe it complies with all aspects of Awesomespec.

Known issues:
- First floor east bathroom tub is non-functional; rotate it so that Sims can use it.
- Trying to teach a toddler to walk in the nursery can be problematic; the action ahs been dropped due to a lack of room.  Suggested: do it inside the visitor area.
- Toddlers can crawl around the house.  Configure an APO inside the nursery to deny "exit" to "everyone" with overrides to the caregivers.

Primarily Irish and Scots ancestery, with a dash of Dutch thrown in for "seasoning". I married a Hispanic and my sister married an East Indian so our children are really a "Mulligan Stew". My niece is not married and does not plan to ever do so. My 3 daughters have married a man of German ancestery, one of Welsh ancestery, and one of English ancestery. I'm curious to see what diversity the next generation (my 8 grandchildren) brings into the family line. LOL

I tend to go with symmetry when creating apartments only because, here in the US at least, most apartment complexes are built with symmetrical or "mirror image" units. I assume it is because it costs less to do so. I would think getting an archetect to plan "individualized" units would be much more expense as well as time consuming and would require a lot more diversity of materials which would cut out any discounts or savings for purchasing materials in quantity.

So OK, here I go again with my fourth entry. And yes it is again symmetrical. Actually I might try doing something asymmetrical now, but am unsure if I will like it well enough to post. We'll have to wait and see. ;D Some CC; mostly walls, floors and ceilings but also Menaceman's light fix and the Morroccan chair.

Chobeegal - you might want to clean out your Sims2Pack (I do this by renaming the Sims 2 folder and then installing the Sims2Pack using Clean Installer to get rid of all unwanted CC).  I don't mind extra furniture, but the file also currently seems to include two CC mailboxes, two CC garbage cans, and Inge's Stay Things Shrub.

I'm not sure the shower works, I did it more for appearance than usability. I have used the tub with the shower in place with no problem. I believe the tub works with the curtains, I saw it done this way by someone else somewhere and I think I tested it out then. I know that Sims can still pass through arches that have curtains placed on them so I see no reason they could not use tub. If they can't, I'll be disappointed because it eliminates one more method of adding some realistic details.

Oops, I forgot that I used Inge's Stay Things Shrub in my test run (done in residential mode) to keep the furnishings from disappearing when I moved them out. But the mailboxes and garbage cans came in on the base lot because I forgot to clean install it this time. I frequently find extra CC mailboxes and garbage cans piggybacking on the lots I download here. I usually remember to uncheck them in clean installer though.

Chobeegal: Does that whole mash of curtain, tub, and college shower work out? I mean, is it usable? Because I'm looking to recreate our new bunker in Sims, but the only way I can recreate our tub setup is something along those lines.
I commonly put curtains in front of tubs and showers. There are no access issues. For the tub/shower combo, I've done it before with a custom tub, but never with the EAxis one. I'm unsure if there would be a difference.

Here is "Immaculate Zest"
I have all exp packs and M&G

*edit* After Pes noticed I did wrong, I've remodeled the bath. But the internet is giving me grief at the moment, so no download or new photo just yet. I'll try again soon. (Ok, all good now)

I've done it a number of times and never seen any adverse effects on my games. But I'm no expert about coding etc. I am admittedly binary illiterate. And I can't even get HomeCrafter to work for me, though I actually did get SimPe to function for making some changes in my game. I had to remove SimPe though because it prevented me from downloading anything from the internet, Sims related or otherwise. So now when I want to use it for anything I have to instal it for whatever I use it to do and then remove it to restore functionality to my PC.

eek! Really? I had my Sim take a bath to test it out, and all seemed ok. Plus, my game still works. I haven't noticed anything unusual either. What is meant to go wrong?
Shall I go back in and re-design the bathroom? Could do that.

*edit* ok, I remodeled the bath. Actually, thinking back, something DID go a bit wonky before. After his bath, the guy went outside in the nude to welcome some old lady. See?

Coming out of my coma to post a house.

This lovely apartment building has 4 'island' units connected by a ying-yang bridge of peace and tranquility.

Not suited for a family sim, the two smaller apartments are 1- single bedroom while the two bigger apartments are 1-double bedrooms.

I apologize for the bare looking apartments, I forgot to take pics while in build mode.

Roof:

Top floor.  Awning conceals the spa on the two smaller apartment decks.

Main floor:  Outdoor dining by way of the balcony.  Seating for 4 outside and 2 (or 3) inside.
Main floor contains bathroom, kitchen, dining room, sitting room and in the larger apartments, bedroom.

Basement:  Basement of the smaller rooms contains a single bedroom.  Basement of the larger apartments contains skilling stations.
All basements contain a bookshelf and comfy chair.

I have had my Sims decide to be nudists also, but it was not when or because of the use of the diagonal tub. I had mods to let them wear casual to work and to sleep nude and they were the culprits (maybe a conflict with another mod) because removing them cured the nudist problem.

Why are my apartments not working?

I've created two apartments from the HOF, but they won't register as apartments.  They're both fully enclosed, although there IS a pond separating the two.  Does this need to be fenced in?

I'll post the residential version today (once I've finished the deco) and maybe someone can give me some pointers as to why it appears to be failing.

UPDATE:

Front of house. Ment to be 2 apartments, each sleeping 8 sims.  If anyone can work out what I did wrong to cause it to fail the conversion to apartments, please, be my guest to fix it.

Three fruit trees.  There is room for play equipment if you squish it between the trees, or move the trees to one side.

Greenhouses - 1 for each apartment, accessible only from the apartment next to it.  Pond access through greenhouses.  Pond is fishable.

Kitchen, Living, Dining and Study.  Kitchen is gated off, and stairs have a door.  Bathroom for guest use.

Bedrooms and playroom for children.  Crib room can be converted into a bedroom by removing the walls.
Teen bedroom can be converted into 2 single beds.

Due to the lack of stuff to do outside the house, I've put a lot of stuff into the top floor.  Mainly skilling, but some fun stuff too.

There's a faq over at MTS2 for apartments; it has a good list of things to avoid.

If I get a chance a bit later, I'll install your lot and see whether I can figure out what the problem is.

The problem may be that you don't have a single entrance to each apartment. There's a back door too, leading onto an open area. If you fence off the bit of garden that belongs to each apartment, making it a sealed unit, that might solve the problem.

This definitely would be the problem. To fix it you would either have to remove the second door from each apartment or put a closed fence around the area. The trouble with enclosing a fenced area is that with a foundation the fencing has to be done on two levels, and this can only normaly be done leaving two squares from lot edges. If your building is too close to lot edges it will not be possible to enclose a "garden" area.
EDIT: OK, after "diving into" the lot here is what I found; there was not just a problem with an unenclosed back door, there were doors from the "apartments" opening directly into the pond area. This can not be done, even if you "fence in" or completely enclose the pond. The game will view doors from the apartments into the pond area as accessing into each other, even if the pond is in between and completely seperating them. The pond can only be used as a "common area" with no direct access from the apartments. I was able with some alterations to get working apartments and keep the same basic "look" to your lot.

Here's my Fifth (and maybe last) submission for this month. It is definitely not symetrical and is also quite a major departure from my usual, more traditional and conventional, exterior color scheme, but I like it a lot! There are two apartments; a one bedroom 1& 1/2 bath for a single or couple and a two bedroom 2 & 1/2 bath for a couple with 3 same sex (I decorated for girls) children. The CC included is only the recolored things necessary to achieve the proper effect. I play tested it quite extensively using several different family compositions.

Thanks for testing it.

I'll just have to refrain from using ponds as separators from now on.  *sigh*.
Sudden thought:  If a pond had a fence/wall through the middle, but was still visibly a pond, would that work?

My 3rd house for the month is slowly coming - it's an orphanage for 20~ sims (including adults, DMA sims and toddlers).
I use the DMA set for live-in NPC's, and think that if you are planning on downloading my next house, you'll need at least the nanny/maid.

There's some trick that you have to use to get backyards for apartments to work... I seem to remember that it involves having a fence on both the ground level and the level of the main floor of the house.  Having never used that trick myself, I can't tell you much more.  However, I know that there's a tutorial or discussion about this at ModTheSims2.

Title: Re: EAxis house of Phail: May 09
Post by: J. M. Pescado on 2009 May 28, 18:31:00
To get an apartment to have a "backyard", it needs to follow the rules of standard apartments, namely, that there must be no portals leading "out" of the apartment except through the apartment door. The back yard must therefore be fully enclosed by something that defines it as a "room", and no portals must lead out: Sims, assuming the walls/fences were actually SOLID, must not be able to enter or leave the yard and reach the mailbox or any other apartment unit without going through the apartment door. In practice, the fences don't need to be solid because the floor dividers will count, yet sims walk over them unimpeded. This results in wonkiness if you don't have the Director's Cut installed and you walk into another apartment via the back door.

The trick to do this is to place a foundation surrounding the area you need to enclose, draw your fence on it then delete it and draw another fence at ground level directly below the other. Since a foundation can only be placed two spaces from lot edge there must always be that distance from the edge for your yard or garden.

So, this is my first attempt at a House of Phail. Unfortunately, an Interior Designer is not me, so I hope it works. Most of my houses are built to accommodate the sims living in them, so they're kind of slapdash. Maybe this will help with that.

My last house for this month.

4 Danish Drive Orphanage.rar (http://www.4shared.com/file/108866827/144874bc/4_Danish_Drive_Orphanage.html)

An orphanage for those damned Newson kids (and the Ottomas family - everyone needs parents & a nana!).

Top floor is skilling and gaming items.  There is not a lot of room in this house for a backyard, so everything is upstairs.

Bedrooms and bathrooms.  10 single beds & 3 double beds - 5 bathrooms.  I turned one of the double bedrooms into an NPC room.

The main floor.  Nursery holds 5 babies and contains a few skilling items.  Door leads from the kitchen straight into the nursery.  Dining room for 15 14, bar seating for 5.  There is a large bathroom on the main floor.

The DMA NPC's Mr. & Mrs. Smith enjoy a game of Mahjong.  Mr. Smith is a 'Manager' who does the cooking, cleaning, pays bills and looks after the house.  Mrs. Smith is a nanny, babysitter, maid and cook all in one.

Nana Ottomas and one of the children put towns into the train set.

One of the children gains a skillpoint using the play table.

This lot is HUGE.  It runs, but very slowly on my machine.  With 12 playable sims + 2 NPC's and guests, you're looking at about 20 people on the lot at once.

This lot might make a good dorm.
