Title: foundation swap (idea, not actual contest)
Post by: CatOfEvilGenius on 2009 March 17, 22:04:06
This is an idea for a small group of bored builders.
In a nutshell, make a difficult foundation for others, then build on what they give you.

* Each builder creates a lot that's empty save for a building foundation.
The foundation should be unusual and difficult to build on, but not impossible nor useless.
The idea is to encourage creativity and work outside your comfort zone, not make unusable buildings.
* Each builder gives his or her foundation to the other builders.
* Then everyone tries to build something on each foundation.
Builders may NOT remove any foundation and may NOT add to it.
* Buildings are restricted to a certain theme such as family home, dorm, community lot store, etc.
* If doing this as a contest, all builders vote for the best entry on each foundation.
No voting for your own work.

EAxis House of Phail often requires people to use an existing EA foundation.
This is slightly different in that each builder makes their own in an attempt to confound the others.
The idea is not mine, I'm just posting it.  I heard of it when several folks at MTS2 did it for fun.

That sounds like it could be fun. I'm not fussed about voting; it's the building I enjoy and everyone has different tastes anyway. I'd be willing to give it a go if there are interested others.

Yeah, me too! What if everyone who wants to take part posts a foundation, then we can grab whichever's foundation we want to build on?

Title: Re: foundation swap (idea, not actual contest)
Post by: Wyn on 2009 March 18, 08:42:20
I would think this would run better if it was like a smaller version of House of Phail. To start, CoEG would post a foundation, and we'd do the best we could with it. The 'best' one is selected by the participants, and that person makes a new foundation for everyone to build on.

A good timeframe would be one week to have all entries in. That way, newcomers can participate without having to wait up to a month before they can get started.

Or it can just be an ongoing thing...no time limits.

Makes sense to me. In any case, when this starts up, consider me in. :D

This sounds interesting, I'd definitely give it a go.

I just posted the idea from MTS2, I don't have any mind bending foundations to contribute right now. ;)
I figured those who wanted to give this a go would get together in small groups and organize by PM or in chat.
Or, as has been suggested above, just post some foundations in this thread, no time limit.

Question: Does the definition of 'foundation' in this sense include decks?

I'm going to assume not, as I didn't include any. If it does, the image and the file will be altered appropriately.

(http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1251/foundation1.th.png) (http://img3.imageshack.us/my.php?image=foundation1.png)
Adelaide Manor - All EPs (http://www.4shared.com/file/93702030/e37c2833/Adelaide_Manor_ALL_EPs.html)
Adelaide Manor - BG Only (http://www.4shared.com/file/94189159/39b74c75/Adelaide_Manor.html)

I'd say more unusual than 'difficult', but it's a good start for me, and most likely will be a good warm-up for people who are more talented than I am.

That looks interesting!

I dunno, if decks are included, they gotta stay, but if they aren't, no matter.

What combo of EP/sSPs have you built that in? It's worth mentioning that Anygamestarter is worth using to get a base game compatible foundation, that way anyone can play.

Ack, made with full EPs/SPs! Sorry if that causes any issues. Will obtain AGS and remake if it's a bother.

Post by: Emma on 2009 March 19, 08:23:12
Doesn't bother me, I bought all the EPs/SPs. Did you hear that Pescado...? BOUGHT!

*Emma moons Pescado

I'll download this foundation and have a play with it later. I suppose I ought to make one too... ;D

Well here's my go at this. Not awesome in any respect but I kind of like it. I may have neglected to put lights in front room, dining room and sitting room, but it's late and I'm tired and going to bed now. I'll add more pictures later.

Deathtraps? Such as pools with slides and divingboards but no ladders? Kitchens with no sprinklers or fire alarm? Rooms with entrance and no exit? (I know, I know. That requires a CC door). All those things I can do. But to paraphrase Mr. Roth, I can't build a no bath house.

Not only no bathrooms, but no double beds, as Pes hasn't left room for them. Well, no, there are a few places that might be worth trying... gah, now I want to see if I can put useable double beds in it. Oh well, was about to reload the game for testing anyway.

Bed-in-hallway with doors on either side to let them in.
..not that I, you know, ever had to DO something like that.

Well, those pieces of foundation are close enough to each other so that you could have an uninterrupted second story without gaps in some places, like, for example, the D/E area.

Yeah, I was going to say, "Surely, you can figure out where to put a double bed? " You can float tiles in the air around a foundation without any sort of cheat whatsoever.

Although not having a bed at all and keeping the house almost all narrow walkway would be pretty fun. Emma and Goopy would fall asleep standing up.

Title: Re: foundation swap (idea, not actual contest)
Post by: J. M. Pescado on 2009 March 22, 05:21:06
The D, the A, and the O are all easily big enough that you can put a double bed and still keep the superstructure of DEATH TO EMMA intact. Preserving the DEATH TO EMMA is, of course, a trick left up to you: It's easily possible to construct something that will blot out EMMA DEATH, but that loses out.

Title: Re: foundation swap (idea, not actual contest)
Post by: Strangel on 2009 March 22, 07:07:17
Greh.. It looks like I'll have at least a week's worth of non-intarwebz time to dedicate to working on these. We were supposed to be in Future Bunker by now (we signed off on the tenth with "you'll be in by the 13th!" promises) so intarwebz were supposed to be transfered on the 22nd. We're still here, so the new service doesn't go on in the other house. Bah.

Ah, well.. I can get more work done on rebuilding my long-ignored hood and make work on these foundations. I'll lock my office on the way out.

I dare you to build something on THIS foundation.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

DEATH TO EMMA Apartments. Tiny, cheap, and so cramped you could DIE. Rent (furnished of course!) is between 2904-6376 + 375-697 per week. Community area has tv, computers, skilling items, and bathrooms for guests (I do not suggest having many guests in your tiny apartment). I have all EPs and SPs. Easily converted into a deathtrap. (Also they are dark. Because I forgot lights. Whoops.)

Residential Version (http://www.lightsbrook.com/sims/maty/foundation-deathtoemma/Death%20to%20Emma%20-%20ResApt.Sims2Pack) (In case you want to make changes, such as adding the apartment mailbox. I never do because it works without them, lol. It's not like the landlord NOTICES your rent isn't being paid.)

And then, because I already made it and might as well share, FOUNDATION BASE (http://www.lightsbrook.com/sims/maty/foundation-deathtoemma/Death%20to%20Emma.Sims2Pack) to build your own!

I've built a house on the foundation that I posted. Please note that it was built and furnished with full EPs and SPs. I won't be remaking this one, however. It's not my best work, but I think that it's still presentable.

There is no CC present in this house, but it lacks 'decorative touches' such as sculpture or paintings.

I think that the house is substantially less awesome than it appears, but fly at 'er. :) If even one person likes it, it was worth the effort. I hope it requires very little remodelling. Also, I'd very much recommend SmarterLights from MTS2, by Numenor. It does wonderful things for this house, and even better - no conflicts with Pescado's AL Director's Cut.

I'm looking for something to do tomorrow night, so I hope someone uploads a non-"Death To Emma" foundation.

Wyn, eaglezero posted a download link to the Death To Emma foundation about five posts above this.  Sorry, reading comprehension fail on my part.

Death to Emma looked too fun to pass by, so I took a stab at it (nothing personal against Emma).  It does not take good pictures, due to the strangeness of the layout.  It is not AwesomeSpec at all:

Exterior.  Should be obvious that I wasn't aiming for aesthetically pleasing landscaping.

The main bedroom and the greenhouse.  There was no room in this place at all for a double bed that would be accessible, so Emma and Goopy will just have to do singles I love Lucy style.

Kitchen.  No fire alarm for fun fiery goodness.

Nursery and Music/Trophy room.

Room for 12s, the study with desk, and the library.

The Entry halls and Entertainment room.  In this picture you can also see the fire jet walkways of doom.  The sim I play-tested with died within 12 hours because of those.  :)

The bathroom, which unfortunately is not accessible.  So sad.  I thought it would be more tortuous to have a bathroom but not be able to reach it.    :P

Full view of the interior layout.  "To" in the middle is a deck with telescope, treadmill and chess board.

Made with all expansions and stuff packs.  No cc, costs $185, 378, fully furnished throughout.  It's available for download on mediafire here (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?uwkzzgoktgm), and--just for nekonoai--on 4shared here (http://www.4shared.com/file/94737894/a534e174/Death_to_Emma.html).

Edit just for nekonoai again  :P -- the sucker all cleaned out.  Some assembly required for playability.

Welcome to Jericho Lodge (http://www.4shared.com/file/94663231/aef8b325/Jericho_Lodge.html) - a wonderful home for those well-to-do people wishing for a vacation in the mountains, or simply wanting to have a mini-vacation every day. For just over $130,000, this home can be yours. It has four bedrooms and one and a half baths. Any one of the bedrooms is capable of being turned into a home office, including the guest bedroom located next to the dining room. The majority of the house has been left relatively undecorated to permit the creativity and personality of the new owner shine forth.

Spifftastic on Jericho Lodge.. I downloaded it for future vacation lots. I especially like the kitchen and bathrooms. I MUST learn how you decide internal walls. It always comes off interesting and stylish, unlike my general internals.. boxes within boxes or an entirely open floor plan. lol

I've just modified the post.  Can you get to 4shared?  If not, I suppose I could upload an unfurnished version, but it won't be until tomorrow.  I really didn't think anyone would be that interested in downloading it since the tiny hallway-like living spaces will cause sim traffic jams from hell, so actually playing the thing will be the most tortuous part about it.

And Emma, I really don't hate you.   :D

o snap. no. I can't get to 4shared either. it's blocked. ;p but I'll try to remember to get it from home. even if it's furnished maxis only, you can still run it thru the clean installer to get the lot itself. that HAS to be smaller than required max. doesn't it? ;p

No, even unfurnished it wasn't small enough to attach, so I gutted it: no furnishing, no plants, no windows, no doors, no deadly fire jets.   :'(  Okay, there's still a couple doors left, but you'll still have to add more to make it playable again--if you call what it was before 'playable', hehe.

I present the A+ Luxury Apartments, built on Aggie's Plus foundation. I had quite a few problems getting the side buildings to be useful and finally put in a narrow apartment and community rooms in each side. The lot has been cleaned and wanded, but the apartments are still a bit pricey if rented furnished because I gave no heed to economics when decorating. I also included the residential version of the lot wanded to 118k.

ETA: I forgot the mention that I have all EPs and Stuff Packs.

Stole my idea for apartments on Aggie's Plus lot, even if different in execution. Good work, too. *polite clap*

Will post when I develop sufficient ennui with my current project.

Thanks. I would love to see what you do with your apartment idea. It's interesting to see how different people imagine using the same base space in such wildly different ways. I enjoying browsing the phail house threads for the same reason.

Nobody needs to poke me with sticks or tell me how lame this is, I already know. Decided to brave the derision of the denizens of MATY and post it anyway.

OK, here's my go at ARRRR which I renamed "The Jolly Roger Apartments". It took me weeks to get it done the way I liked, but I finally did it. It was play tested by Roger and Piratica Jolly.
