How to include maxis recolors in packaged lots?

Maxis disabled this in, the Pets expansion I think? Anyway, is there anyway to get these into a packaged lot using non-maxis software? I've cleaned the detritus using Clean Installer, but there are a few recolors I'd like to include.

Actually they broke it in Pets, then patched it. Now I've read they've broken it again.  ::)

They haven't broken their track record of things they break with each expansion
