Ok, they are showing up now.  Will using it in this mode change anything?

No.  Compatability mode just changes a few strings of OS code for the purpose of loading an application.  It will have zero effect on actual gameplay.  I still have no idea why the newest expansion would need to be scaled back on your system, but since it's working for the moment it's probably best to just leave well enough alone.
