Not so random randomness

I've finally got a very nice mix and match of CAS facials from various creators. There's enough out there now and where I didn't like one from one I found I did like that one from another and so on until finally they all look just right for me.
I never did like DocDoofus', though. They all looked exactly the same to me for some reason.

Yeah, default replacements can be hit or miss. I finally made my own because most of the ones up for download had something wrong with them, like they didn't include both the regular and the high-res versions, or the creator stuck too closely to the Maxis prototypes. I just hated the Maxis faces so much that I wanted to get as far away from them as possible. Plus I cannot stand the awful weird eyelash bar that people insist on using on every sim... drives me crazy. Unfortunately after playing with my set for a while I realized that it, too, has serious flaws. The sims are basically all beautiful white people. No variety. At all. I feel a bit uncomfortable with the whole thing now. Originally I just used a bunch of downloaded sims from MTS2, Insim, Lyran... I picked them because I thought they were cute, and didn't realize how bland my set was becoming as I was making it. I will have to replace a few of them when I feel up to doing something so tedious again.
Hmm, would you consider sharing? I'm thinking of doing a composite set and it would be nice to have some more options.
Also, what exactly is a template Sim? Is it just a Sim you download and it acts like an extra CAS face template? Is it possible to make them? *Is curious*

I'll see about uploading my replacements somewhere.
Yes, template sims are sims (made by Maxis) that act exactly like a CAS face template. But trust me, you do not want these uglies in your game! There are pictures and links in this thread: http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,7828.0.html You could, however, replace the face templates with something different, just like you would create a default replacement using Motoki's method. There are five sims that are known to be templates, so this would give you an extra five templates that are usable by townies and NPC's. Variety is good.
As far as creating new ones, Motoki was looking into it, but I don't think he made any progress before disappearing. I had the thought in the back of my mind that I would take a look at it, but I haven't so far. I have a huge list of things I need to finish or update, and both school and work are driving me crazy, so I don't know when I'll find the time. If anyone wanted to do this, I would start by comparing the downloadable Maxis sims with a plain player-created Bodyshop sim. Then I would see if anything inside the files looks at all like the method of making clothing and skintones available to townies might be applicable.

Hmm, that's interesting. I wouldn't think it should be *too* hard. And no, I wouldn't use the Maxis ones, but if we could figure out how to make them then we could expand our own template sets, theoretically to unlimited sizes. Neat! *Goes to investigate*

I don't think it should be impossible. The code is obviously inside the files. It's just a matter of recognizing it for what it is, and I really think a thorough comparison between a template and a non-template sim would get results.
It may help to check out Motoki's original thread, which I am guessing is still in Peasantry somewhere. I really can't recall what he was trying to do, and how, and whether he made any progress. I just remember he said he was looking into it.
